“I would like to reiterate India’s position on His Holiness Dalai Lama. He is a revered religious leader and is deeply respected by the people of India. His Holiness is accorded due courtesies and freedom to conduct his religious and spiritual activities,” stated Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Jaiswal’s comments came, during a weekly briefing, in response to queries regarding India’s stance on the succession of the Dalai Lama, highlighting the spiritual leader’s significant role in India’s cultural fabric.

Delving into recent diplomatic engagements, Jaiswal provided insights into the visit of a high-level United States Congressional delegation to India from June 16 to 20. Led by Michael McCaul, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the seven-member US delegation visited Dharamshala on June 18 and 19.

Kejriwal's Bail

Delhi HC Stays Kejriwal’s Bail

Delhi High Court has stayed the trial court order granting bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money laundering case related to alleged excise policy “scam”.

Delhi High Court said that it will pass the order on the ED plea in two to three days.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has challenged the order of Rouse Avenue court on granting bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money laundering case related to the Delhi Excise policy.

ED has challenged the order dated June 20, 2024, passed by Special Judge (Vacation Judge), Rouse Avenue District Courts that granted bail to Kejriwal.

The trial court said in the bail order that ED has failed to give any direct evidence against the applicant (Kejriwal) in respect of the proceeds of crime.

ED in its petition has said that the June 20 order granting regular bail to Kejriwal was passed without granting adequate opportunity of hearing to the ED and without considering that in light of the facts of the present case where all courts up to Supreme Court have given judicial imprimatur to the fact that the offence of money laundering has been committed and hence regular bail in light of the mandatory twin conditions under Section 45 of the PMLA could not have been granted.

Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21 in connection with a money laundering case relating to alleged irregularities in the now-cancelled Delhi excise policy 2021-22.

The Delhi Chief Minister was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court on May 10 in view of Lok Sabha polls and was told to surrender on June 2. He was asked not visit the Office of the Chief Minister and the Delhi Secretariat.

The Delhi High Court had earlier dismissed his plea for release from jail and rejected his argument of political vendetta amid the Lok Sabha elections. (ANI)

Delhi and Hiaryana over the water crisis

Atishi To Begin Indefinite Fast Till Delhi Gets Rightful Share Of Water From Haryana

Amid the escalating row between Delhi and Haryana over the water crisis in the national capital, Delhi Water Minister Atishi said on Friday, that she will step on the path of ‘Satyagraha’ and start an ‘indefinite fast’ from today.

She said despite every possible effort, the Haryana government is not providing full water to Delhi, resulting in 28 lakh people not getting wate.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader said she will will go to Raj Ghat to pay tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, following which she will start an indefinite fast at Bhogal, Jangpura at noon.

Taking to X, Atishi stated, “Water shortage continues in Delhi. Even today 28 lakh Delhiites are not getting water. Despite every possible effort, the Haryana government is not providing full water to Delhi. Mahatma Gandhi has taught that if one has to fight against injustice, one must adopt the path of Satyagraha.”

“I will start ‘Water Satyagraha’ from today. I will go to Raj Ghat at 11 am and pay tribute to Gandhiji. I will start an indefinite fast at Bhogal, Jangpura from 12 o’clock. I will remain on fast until the people of Delhi get their rightful share of water from Haryana,” she added.

Atishi had announced on Wednesday, that if Delhi does not get its “rightful” share of water by June 21, she will be forced to do a ‘Satyagraha’.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has continued to attack the Delhi government over the water crisis.

BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj alleged the crisis has been “orchestrated” by the AAP government to “encourage corruption.”

“It almost seems that this crisis, which is not a natural crisis, has been orchestrated by the Kejriwal government to encourage their own corruption as well as to encourage the illegal tanker mafia,” Bansuri Swaraj told ANI.

“Delhi is in a dire state. The entire city is parched and the Kejriwal government is indulging only in theatrics. Delhi minister Atishi instead of working on the ground and instead of taking any adequate steps is now indulging in mere theatrics and is now threatening Delhiites with anshan (fast),” she added.

Delhi has been reeling under a water crisis amid scorching heat for close to a month now. People in multiple parts of the city are forced to queue up to collect water from the tankers. They have expressed their frustration with the situation, demanding and end to their problems.

The political row over the water crisis has continued to intensify with BJP and AAP at loggerheads.

Congress, which contested the Lok Sabha elections in alliance with AAP, has also attacked the Delhi government on the issue, with Congress’ Delhi president Devender Yadav terming it a “deceit” with the people. (ANI)

NEET-UG examination

Pradhan Announces High-Level Committee To Probe Issues Pertaining To NTA

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Thursday announced the formation of a high-level committee to probe into the issues pertaining to the functioning of the National Testing Agency (NTA) amid the allegations of irregularities in the NEET-UG examination.

“We are committed to holding zero-error exams, and a high-level committee is being formed to improve NTA functioning,” Pradhan said at a briefing.

“The government is going to form a high-level committee which will be investigating several issues pertaining to the NTA. Recommendations will be expected from that high-level committee to further improve NTA, its structure, functioning, examination process, transparency and data security protocol. We are committed to zero error exam,”Pradhan said at a press conference after the Opposition demanded answers from the Modi-led government over NEET issue and UGC-NET exam cancellation.

The Education Minister said that it will not compromise on transparency and is committed to protecting the interests of the students.

“…I want to assure everyone that the government is committed to protecting the interests of students. We will not compromise on transparency…,” Pradhan said.

Speaking about the reports of the ‘paper leak’ from Patna, Pradhan said, “In the context of the NEET exam, we are in touch with Bihar government. We are receiving some information from Patna. Police Police are investigating and a detailed report will be submitted by them. Following credible information, strict action will be taken against the guilty.”

Pradhan however said that the incident in Bihar is an isolated one and it should not affect other students.

“One isolated incident (Bihar paper leak) should not affect lakhs of students who took the exam sincerely,” the Education Minister said.

On why the UGC-NET examination was cancelled, Pradhan said that a question paper was found on Dark Net that matched with the original one.

“Soon after it was clear that the UGC-NET question paper on Dark Net matches the original question paper of UGC-NET, we decided to cancel the examination,” he said.

On Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s statement regarding NEET issue and UGC-NET exam cancellation, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said, “…I will again appeal to my opposition friends to have faith in our system… Our government is 100 per cent committed to transparency, to the betterment of the future of our students. And I assure you again, no malpractice, no irregularity will be tolerated by our government.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked the Modi-led central government over the NEET issue and UGC-NET exam cancellation and alleged that the reason behind “paper leaks” is that all the Vice Chancellors, the education system has been captured by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s “parent organisation” (RSS).

“I have spoken about institutional capture in various organizations. This is happening in the education institutions. The reason behind paper leaks is that all the Vice Chancellors, the education system has been captured by the BJP and its parent organisation (RSS),” Rahul Gandhi said in a press conference on Thursday.

Rahul Gandhi said that paper leaks could continue till this “institutional capture” of education institutions by the BJP is not reversed.

“Till the time this is not reversed, paper leaks will go on. Modi has facilitated this capture. This is an anti-national activity because this is the future of the country and the youth of the country are facing the brunt of it,” the Congress MP said.

“It is a national crisis, it’s an economic crisis, it’s an educational crisis, institutional crisis. But I don’t see any response…Regarding Bihar, we have said that there should be an inquiry and action should be taken against those who have leaked the paper,” he added.

The NEET-UG 2024 exam was conducted on May 5 and the results were declared on June 4, ahead of its scheduled announcement date of June 14. Protests were held alleging irregularities and paper leaks as the results showed that as many as 67 students had topped the exam with a perfect score of 720.

The NEET-UG examination, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), paves the way for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other related courses in government and private institutions across the country.

The Ministry of Education on Wednesday cancelled the University Grants Commission-National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on June 18.

A fresh examination shall be conducted, for which information shall be shared separately.

On June 19, 2024, the University Grants Commission (UGC) received certain inputs from the National Cyber Crime Threat Analytics Unit of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs on the Examination. These inputs prima facie indicate that the integrity of the aforesaid examination may have been compromised. (ANI)
