Kejriwal Gets Bail In Excise Policy ED Case

The Rouse Avenue court on Thursday granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money laundering case related to the Delhi excise policy.

Vacation judge Nyay Bindu granted bail to Arvind Kejriwal on furnishing bail bond of Rs one lakh.

The court refused the request of ED to postpone the process of filing a bail bond for 48 hours.

Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21 in connection with a money laundering case relating to alleged irregularities in the now-cancelled Delhi excise policy 2021-22.

The Delhi Chief Minister had been granted interim bail by the Supreme Court on May 10 in view of Lok Sabha polls and was told to surrender on June 2.

He was asked not visit the Office of the Chief Minister and the Delhi Secretariat.

The Delhi High Court had earlier dismissed his plea for release from jail and rejected his argument of political vendetta amid the Lok Sabha elections. (ANI)

Govt Focus is on Vande Bharat Not Passenger Safety

‘Govt Focus is on Vande Bharat & Bullet Train, Not Passenger Safety’

Naren Singh Rao, an academic and lawyer based in Delhi, says Rail Minister’s misplaced priorities are the cause behind rising train disasters. His views:

In another tragic accident, 15 passengers have died, while 60 were injured. Three rear coaches of the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express, which was stationary, had derailed in district Darjeeling, West Bengal, on June 18. A goods train collided with it – heads-on.

This incident points to a stark reality – the anti-collision system in India is sorely lacking crucial infrastructure. Also, it underscores that Kavach, the ‘made-in-India’ system, aimed at preventing collisions, is yet to be deployed on busier tracks such as that of Darjeeling in the Eastern Railways.

This accident points to the Railways’ abject failure to implement essential safety systems, despite touting advanced technology. This incident could have been averted had the anti-collision system been in place. Surely, the highest echelons of the Railways, including the minister, and bureaucrats, must be held accountable.

The deaths have added to the long list of rail accidents since Ashwini Vaishnav took charge as Railways Minister in 2021. The number is up to 329; this includes the devastating accident in Balasore, Odisha, last year, which led to the death of 296 passengers.

There are major structural problems in nearly every aspect of railway administration. The problems are only multiplying, thanks to the government’s misplaced priorities, downright mismanagement, faulty policies and vision.

The BJP-led regime seems to be more focused on a fake narrative – to garner eyeballs. Despite the crumbling rail infrastructure and a safety system totally in disarray. Instead of addressing the issues relating to essential infrastructure, the government has given priority to expensive trains like Vande Bharat, which cater exclusively to the nouveau riche and upper middle class.

The government has allocated significant funds to elitist projects like bullet trains. Progress on them have been abysmally poor. They are unlikely to make any substantial impact, aside from some PR reports in the sold-out media.

ALSO READ: Modi 3.0 Must Focus on Jobs & Rising Inequity

This is a reflection of a larger decline in political morality. Gone are the days when union ministers were quick to take moral responsibility after a railway accident. After the high moral ground resignation of Lal Bahadur Shastri, then the railways minister in Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet, Mamata Banerjee and Nitish Kumar too had resigned. No such ethical position seems possible under the Modi regime.

In the latest accident, predictably, the entire blame is being placed on overworked and underpaid driver and his assistant, who were reportedly forced to work from 9 to 14 hours a day. They are both dead.

The fact is, as in other government services, the railways is recruiting much less than required; there are approximately 18,000 vacancies for drivers and assistant drivers – unfilled for years. This shortage is not unique, since many central government departments face similar crises under the current regime. In any case, mass unemployment, especially among the young, stalks the nation.

The government policies appear to disproportionately favour the wealthy while deliberately neglecting the needs of the poor. One significant example of this prejudiced perspective is the Vande Bharat Express, which caters primarily to affluent passengers. The minimum ticket price for this service is more than Rs 1,000, even for a short journey such as Delhi to Jaipur. Additionally, ambitious projects like the bullet train seem to be geared towards serving the business elite, rather than addressing the transportation needs of the masses.

Compartments classified as second class, typically used by working-class passengers, are being eliminated from various categories of trains. It is now not uncommon to find trains without second class/sleeper class compartments. As a result, the remaining trains with such compartments are suffocatingly crowded, with unhygienic bathrooms, no food or drinking water. The derogatory term, ‘cattle class’, used by Britishers, seems an understatement in the crushing humiliation suffered by ordinary folks in our trains now.

It is a direct consequence of brazen crony capitalism and privatisation of the public sector, which has become a dominant trend under the Modi regime, whereby certain monopolies seem to be ruling the roost.

The Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA)

SC Issues Notice To NTA To Transfer NEET-UG From High Court To Apex Court

The Supreme Court on Thursday issued a notice on a plea filed by the National Testing Agency (NTA) seeking the transfer of petitions relating to the NEET-UG, 2024 examination from the High Court to the apex court.

A bench headed by Justice Vikram Nath has also stayed proceedings before different High Courts.

The apex court reiterated that it will not stop the counselling process.

Supreme Court has also issued a notice to the Centre and NTA on a petition filed by some students who appeared in the Meghalaya centre for NEET-UG exam and allegedly lost 45 minutes and prayed they should be a part of the 1563 students who got grace marks and were given option to appear for re-exam on June 23.

The Supreme Court has posted the pleas for hearing on July 8.

The NEET-UG 2024 exam was conducted on May 5 and its results were declared on June 4, ahead of its scheduled announcement date of June 14. Protests were held alleging irregularities and paper leaks as the results showed that as many as 67 students had topped the exam with a perfect score of 720.

Petitions have been filed in courts by students seeking a re-test. The Supreme Court has allowed a re-test of over 1,500 students who were awarded “grace marks.”

The NEET-UG examination, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), paves the way for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other related courses in government and private institutions across the country.

On June 13, the NTA informed the Supreme Court that the scorecards of 1563 candidates who were awarded “grace marks” in the NEET-UG 2024 exam would be cancelled and these candidates would have an option to reappear for the exam on June 23, the results of which will be declared before June 30, or forgo the compensatory marks given for the loss of time.

On Tuesday, the apex court emphasized that any negligence, even as small as 0.001 per cent, in the conduct of the NEET-UG 2024 examination would be addressed thoroughly.

A vacation bench of Justices Vikram Nath and SVN Bhatti told advocates representing the Centre and the National Testing Agency (NTA) that any such negligence must be dealt with seriously. (ANI)

heatwave Delhi Power demand

Delhi’s Peak Power Demand Reaches All-Time High Of 8,656 MW

Amid the heatwave conditions in Delhi, the national capital’s peak power demand reached an all-time high of 8,656 MW at 3:06 pm, the highest ever in the history of the national capital, the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) data stated on Wednesday.

The national capital’s peak power demand clocked 8000 MW for the first time on May 22, 2024. Since then, Delhi’s peak power demand has crossed the 8000 MW mark on nine occasions.

Before the records of 2024, Delhi’s previous high of 7695 MW was recorded on June 29, 2022. Last year, Delhi’s peak power demand was 7438 MW.

“Today is the 31st day in a row Delhi’s peak power demand has crossed the 7000 MW. Delhi’s peak power demand never crossed 7000 MW during the month of May 2023 and crossed the 7000 MW in May only once in 2022,” it stated.

The fact that Delhi’s power distribution network has been able to sustain this prolonged high demand for power shows its robustness. It is pertinent to remember that barring last year, when Delhi’s demand peaked in August, it usually peaks during the end of June and early July.

The Ministry of Power has also undertaken comprehensive measures to meet the highest-ever peak national power demand of 250 GW during the ongoing summer season, amidst challenging weather conditions across the country.

According to a Ministry of Power press release, on June 17, 2024, the Northern Region alone recorded its highest peak demand of 89 GW, which was successfully met despite the prevailing heatwave.

The unprecedented demand in the Northern Region, exacerbated by a prolonged heatwave since mid-May, prompted the Ministry to implement a strategic approach to ensure uninterrupted power supply. Notably, the region managed to meet its peak demand by leveraging inter-regional power imports, accounting for 25 to 30 per cent of the total requirement. (ANI)

US delegation Tibetan

The Message Is Loud And Clear To China, Says Tibetan Min

The US delegation, led by Congressman Michael McCaul met with Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama at his residence on Wednesday.

Security Minister of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, Dolma Gyari emphasised the significance of the visit, stating, “I think the message is loud and clear to China… that freedom-loving nations in the world, people who promote peace and justice, support Tibet.” Gyari highlighted the symbolism of the timing, coinciding with the US Congressional delegation’s presence alongside the Dalai Lama in Dharamshala. “This is a strong message of support from the American Congress and people for justice and the cause of the Tibetan people,” she added.

Reflecting on the auspiciousness of the visit, Gyari remarked, “What a good coincidence. This event has aligned with the presence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Dharamshala and the visit of the US Congressional delegation, amidst various factors including the oracle’s schedule.”

Tenzin Lekshay, spokesperson of the Tibetan government-in-exile, expressed jubilation over the delegation’s visit and its potential impact, stating, “It is a very great moment for us. The high-level US Congressional delegation has already met His Holiness, followed by a public felicitation ceremony in the main temple courtyard.” Lekshay underscored the delegation’s support and solidarity, noting the progress of the Resolve Tibet Act in the US Congress, which awaits President Biden’s signature. “This legislative support is crucial for us,” he affirmed.

Regarding China’s reaction to international support for Tibet, Lekshay remarked, “Whenever we take steps forward, China expresses unhappiness. They should reflect on their actions in Tibet over the last several decades, which have prioritised their own interests over fulfilling Tibetan aspirations.” He emphasised the need for resolution in the China-Tibet conflict to address Tibetan people’s long-standing aspirations.

Lekshay also acknowledged India’s pivotal role in supporting Tibetan refugees, stating, “India has been the best host for us, and we are grateful to the Indian government and public. The Tibetan issue is not just a concern for Tibetans alone; India also has a stake in it, and awareness among the Indian populace is crucial.”

The visit comes amidst ongoing global attention to human rights issues in Tibet and growing international calls for dialogue and resolution. The Dalai Lama, a revered spiritual leader, has lived in exile in India since fleeing Tibet in 1959 following a failed uprising against Chinese rule.

The Congressional delegation arrived in India on Tuesday and.

Last week, the US Congress passed a bill urging Beijing to re-engage with the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan leaders to peacefully resolve their dispute over the status and governance of Tibet.

It also urged China to begin talks with the Dalai Lama, who is the spiritual leader of Tibet, and other Tibetan leaders about how Tibet is governed. No formal talks between the two sides have taken place since 2010. (ANI)
