Kanchenjunga Train Mishap: Passenger Files Complaint Against Loco, Co-Loco Pilot Of Goods Train

A passenger, who was travelling on the Kanchenjunga Express at the time of the accident on June 17, filed a complaint against the loco pilot and co-loco pilot of the goods train.

A goods train allegedly disregarded a signal and hit the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjungha Express near North Bengal’s Jalpaiguri station at 8.55 am on Monday. The accident took place in the Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district.

At least 10 people died and over 25 people were injured in the accident.

The passenger, identified as Chinmoy Majumdar, mentioned in her complaint that while the train was moving suddenly a jerk was felt, creating a panicky atmosphere. She has received injuries and some co-passengers have also sustained grievous injuries.

“After coming down from the train, she found that one goods train hit the Kanchenjunga Express from the back side after which some portion was badly damaged including the engine of the goods train. The accident happened due to rush and negligent conduct of the loco pilot and co-loco pilot,” the complaint further said.

Dr Sandeep Kumar Sengupta, Dean of North Bengal Medical College and Hospital confirmed on Tuesday that the death toll in the mishap has increased to 10 after two more deaths were reported today.

“Yesterday, 37 people were admitted, two people weren’t in a bad state hence they were released. two people were serious, unfortunately, we couldn’t save them and both died today. They were on ventilators. Whoever has multiple organ injuries, it cannot be said that their situation is good. We don’t know their health history and if they are accident victims, in such cases we have to be more cautious.”

“As the situation changes, we will make the decisions as per protocol. Eight people were brought dead yesterday along with a body part – a leg. Two died in hospital which takes the death tally to 10,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety, Northeast Frontier Railway, Janak Kumar Garg, will hold a statutory inquiry in connection with the Kanchenjunga Express tragedy that claimed eight lives and left 25 injured on June 19.

The water level of the Kopili River, a tributary of the Brahmaputra River, is flowing above the danger level mark at Kampur in Nagaon district, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority.

“Right now the water level is going up and down. There is a statue in the middle of the river and when the water reaches its neck, we realize that the water level has risen,” a local said.

Notably, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday, issued a week-long forecast predicting continuous rainfall in Guwahati.

Alerts have been issued for various parts of the country, including Assam and Meghalaya, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected until June 20.

IMD has specifically warned of exceptionally heavy rainfall on June 18, ie, Tuesday.

“Assam and Meghalaya is very likely to get isolated heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.4 mm) on 16th & 17th June and exceptionally heavy rainfall on 18th June whereas likely to get heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.4 mm) on 19 and 20th June,” IMD said on its official Twitter account on Sunday.

The streets of Anil Nagar and Chandmari areas in Guwahati were severely waterlogged on Monday, disrupting normal life, following heavy rainfall in the region.

A resident of Anil Nagar urged the administration for a solution.

Delhi Water Crisis

Long Queues Seen At Water Tankers In Delhi

Long lines of people were seen queuing up on Tuesday to fetch water from tankers across parts of the national capital, as the city sizzled in the summer heat.

Morning visuals showed people from Kusumpur Pahadi in Vasant Vihar, Geeta Colony, and Okhla area seen standing in queues, holding onto cans and buckets and crowding around water tankers.

Amid soaring temperatures, these scenes have become a daily occurrence in the national capital in many areas since the start of the summer season this year

A local resident from Okhla described her plight and said that their whole day goes into fetching water for the family.

“The situation is much worse here. Only two to three tankers come here in a day. The whole day goes into fetching water, when will we do the rest of the work?” she told ANI.

Chanakyapuri’s Sanjay Camp, Geeta Colony in East Delhi, Patel Nagar, Mehrauli, and Chhatarpur are some of the areas in the national capital that have been affected by severe water crisis.

Meanwhile, the water crisis has also incited a political storm in the national capital, with both BJP and AAP at loggerheads.

The Aam Aadmi Party has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of “orchestrating” the shortage in the national capital by trying to block the flow of water into the national capital.

The BJP has been blaming the AAP government for the water crisis saying that it did not take effective action against the tanker mafia who pilfer water. It even held protests in different parts of Delhi against the water crisis.

Congress, which had fought the recent Lok Sabha elections in alliance with the AAP in the national capital, has also held protests in the national capital.

Earlier on Monday, Delhi Water Minister Atishi appealed Haryana government to release the water and solve the problems of the people of Delhi amid the escalating water crisis and sweltering heat.

Addressing the media persons, Atishi said, “Today we are here at Wazirabad barrack. Water from here is sent to various water treatment plants including Wazirabad, Chandrawal, and Okhla. Currently, no water is being released into the Wazirabad barrage. The water level has stepped so low that now the river bed is visible. Again, we are appealing to the Haryana government to release the water and solve the problems of the people of Delhi.”

“Till the time Haryana doesn’t release water into the Yamuna, water shortage will continue in Delhi. Munak Canal receives very little water and on the other hand, Wazirabad Barrage receives no water. The water from Yamuna goes to water treatment and is then resent to Delhi’s public after re-treatment. But there is no water in Yamuna, the reason why the supply is halted. I can just stand before the Haryana government with folded hands and appeal to save the lives of Delhi’s public,” she added.

On the other hand, Haryana Chief Minister of Haryana Nayab Singh Saini took a potshot at Delhi’s government for “neglecting” and “mismanaging” the issue of water supply and stated that the state is providing an adequate amount of water to the national capital.

“We are providing them sufficient water. First, the AAP government should do some introspection on themselves. They are more focused on corruption rather than fulfilling its promises to the public. They should focus on implementing developmental schemes for the public of Delhi rather than doing corruption,” he told reporters. (ANI)
