The Andhra Pradesh Lok Sabha and Assembly elections are witnessing a triangular contest between the ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), the Congress-led INDIA coalition, and the BJP-led NDA alliance, comprising Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP and the Pawan Kalyan-led Jana Sena Party (JSP).

The exit polls on Sunday have predicted victory for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly polls held on May 13.

The Assembly polls took place on May 13 in a single-phase polling process.

The Axis My India predicted 78-96 seats for TDP, 55-77 seats for YSRCP, 16-18 seats for JSP, 4-6 seats for BJP, and 0-2 seats for Congress.

Polling for all 175 seats of the State Legislative Assembly of Andhra Pradesh was held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls.

During the 2019 elections, YSRCP registered a landslide victory in Andhra Pradesh, winning 151 of the 175 seats in the Assembly, dethroning the TDP government.

The Bharatiya Janata Party is eyeing a third straight term in power, while the Opposition under the umbrella of the INDIA bloc is seeking to wrest power from the ruling party.

Most exit polls predicted a straight term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with quite a few of them projecting a two-thirds majority for the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The Congress party and its allies dismissed the exit polls as “orchestrated” and a work of “fantasy”, asserting that the opposition INDIA bloc will form the next government at the Centre.

Strict security has been put in place for the smooth conduct of counting of votes for over 8,000 candidates in this general election.

Two polls predicted the BJP would also improve its numbers from the 303 seats it won in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. In the 2019 elections, NDA wrested 353 seats, of which the BJP won 303 alone. The Opposition’s UPA got only 93 seats of which the Congress got 52.

Mexico City Claudia Sheinbaum

Claudia Sheinbaum Elected As Mexico’s First Woman President

Climate scientist and former mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, has been elected as the first woman to be elected as President of Mexico. She will also be the first Jewish leader of Jewish heritage to hold the office, Politico reported.

Sheinbaum (61) received nearly 58 per cent of the vote, according to preliminary results from the Mexican electoral office.

Sheinbaum’s opposition candidate Xochitl Galvez, backed by a coalition of the National Action (PAN), Institutional Revolutionary (PRI) and Democratic Revolution (PRD) parties, has received votes between 26.6 per cent and 28.6 per cent.

Jorge Alvarez Maynez of the Citizens’ Movement has received votes between 9.9% and 10.8 per cent. According to the quick count results, participation in Mexico’s Presidential election was between 58.9 per cent and 61.7 per cent of nearly 100 million eligible voters, according to CNN report.

After expressing gratitude to the voters for their support, Sheinbaum called it a historical moment. Sheinbaum stated, “For the first time in 200 years of the Republic, I will become the first woman president of Mexico.” She said, “We have achieved a plural, diverse and democratic Mexico,” according to a Politico report.

She further said, “Although many Mexicans do not fully agree with our project, we will have to walk in peace and harmony to continue building a fair and more prosperous Mexico.”

Sheinbaum’s party, Morena, is expected to have a majority in the legislature, according to projections by the Mexican electoral office. Such a majority would enable her to make constitutional changes that have eluded Mexico’s incumbent President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Politico reported.

She is a close confidant of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who was not allowed to run for office again after his six-year term. It was the biggest election day in Mexico, which has a population of around 130 million people.

Obrador congratulated Sheinbaum on her win, CNN reported. In a video posted on X, Obrador stated, “With all my affection and respect I congratulate Claudia Sheinbaum who came out victorious with an ample margin. She will be the first (female) President of Mexico… but also the President, possibly, with most votes obtained in all of the history of our country.”

In addition to the Presidential elections, over 20,000 political positions need to be filled, including all seats in the lower house and the Senate and regional and municipal offices, according to Politico report.

Thousands of soldiers were deployed in Mexico to facilitate a peaceful voting day. Despite the security arrangements, a town council candidate was shot to death hours before the election, the report said. One man was kidnapped while voting in a polling station in another town. (ANI)

Centre Mandates Self-Declaration Certificate For All New Advts From June 18

Following the Supreme Court’s directive that all advertisers or advertising agencies must submit a ‘Self-Declaration Certificate’ before publishing or broadcasting any advertisement, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has introduced a new feature on the Broadcast Seva Portal for TV and Radio Advertisements and on the Press Council of India’s portal for print and digital/internet advertisements.

The certificate, signed by an authorised representative of the advertiser/advertising agency, needs to be submitted through these portals, as per an official statement from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting dated June 3.

The portal will be activated on June 4, 2024.

The self-declaration certificate is required to be obtained by all advertisers and advertising agencies for all new advertisements that will be issued/telecast/aired/published on or after June 18, 2024, the ministry said.

A buffer period of two weeks has been kept to provide sufficient time for all stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the process of self-certification.

Ongoing advertisements do not require self-certification currently, the ministry clarified.

The purpose of the self-declaration certificate is to certify that the advertisement does not contain misleading claims, and complies with all relevant regulatory guidelines, including those stipulated in Rule 7 of the Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994 and the Norms of Journalistic Conduct of the Press Council of India.

Also, advertisers must provide proof of uploading the self-declaration certificate to the relevant broadcaster, printer, publisher, or electronic media platform for their records.

As per the Supreme Court’s May 7, 2024 directive, no advertisement will be permitted to run on television, print media, or the internet without a valid self-declaration certificate.

“The Hon’ble Supreme Court directive is a step towards ensuring transparency, consumer protection, and responsible advertising practices,” the ministry said, as it urged all advertisers, broadcasters and publishers to adhere to this directive diligently. (ANI)
