Ruling Depensation, Doesn’t Have Numbers, Claims TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee

After Om Birla was elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee said on Wednesday that several opposition members sought a division vote, but the Pro-Tem Speaker did not allow it, which shows that the ruling dispensation does not have the numbers.

Banerjee said, “The rule says if any member of the House asks for division, the pro-tem speaker in this case has to allow for a division. You can see and hear from the footage of Lok Sabha that several members of the opposition camp sought a division and asked for a division to put the motion to vote and the motion was adopted without putting the motion to vote.”

“This is a clear testament to the fact that the ruling dispensation, the BJP, does not have the numbers. This government is running without the numbers. It’s illegal, immoral, unethical and unconstitutional, and the people of the country have already shown them the door. It’s just a matter of time before they’re shown the door again,” the TMC leader added.

National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate and MP from Kota, Om Birla was elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha after the motion for the same was moved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and seconded by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The motion was adopted by the house through a voice vote.

The house echoed with ‘Ayes’ and ‘Noes’ and the pro-tem speaker, Bhartruhari Mahtab, declared Om Birla as the Speaker of the lower house.

The opposition, which had filed K Suresh as the speaker candidate of the INDIA bloc, did not press for a division vote.

JMM MP Mahua Maji told ANI that the opposition didn’t have the numbers and that’s why they didn’t ask for a division vote.

“I congratulate him on behalf of my party. We (Opposition) didn’t have the numbers, so this (division of votes) wasn’t sought. The Parliamentary tradition has been that the Deputy Speaker should be from Opposition. This is a different time; the Opposition has strength. Opposition wanted to give a message so that this doesn’t happen in future and Opposition is heard,” she said. (ANI)

Our Dependency on Groundwater is Unsustainable

‘Our Dependency on Groundwater is Unsustainable, Disastrous’

Manish Saxena, who heads the resident body of high-rise township Arihant Ambience, warns about the depleting groundwater table and its ecological consequences

I seek to address a critical issue that has profoundly impacted our high-rise community: the severe water shortage caused by the lack of piped water supply and the resulting over-reliance on groundwater. This problem has led to an alarming depletion of groundwater over the past decade, a situation starkly highlighted by recent data from the National Compilation on Dynamic Ground Water Resources of India, 2023.

The Central Ground Water Board’s report reveals that Ghaziabad extracted 123% of its total groundwater last year. This rate of extraction is higher than the 75 other districts in the state, underscoring the severity of our situation. Our dependency on groundwater is unsustainable and has led to dire consequences for our community and environment.

In the high-rise residential areas of Greater Noida West, renowned housing societies are already facing acute water shortages. It is not uncommon to see residents queuing up to collect water from tankers, a sight that is both disheartening and indicative of a deeper crisis. These tanker services, while temporarily alleviating the immediate water needs, are not a viable long-term solution and add to the financial burden on our residents.

The excessive groundwater extraction has resulted in a significant drop in the water table, making it increasingly difficult and expensive to access water. Borewells, once sufficient at 100 feet, now require drilling to depths of over 500 feet. This not only escalates costs but also raises the risk of accessing contaminated water, which can have serious health implications.

ALSO READ: ‘We Have Turned A Blind Eye To Looming Water Crisis’

In addition, the environmental impact of this groundwater depletion is worrisome. The over-extraction disrupts natural hydrological cycles, adversely affecting nearby rivers, lakes, and wetlands. This ecological imbalance harms local biodiversity and diminishes the natural beauty and health of our environment.

Socially, the water scarcity has strained our community. Disputes over water allocation have become frequent, and the stress of uncertain water supply affects the quality of life and community harmony. Our children grow up in an environment where water conservation is not just a lesson but a necessity, overshadowing their formative years with concerns about basic resources.

To address this crisis, we have implemented several initiatives. Water-saving measures, such as installing low-flow fixtures, promoting rainwater harvesting, and recycling greywater, are in place. However, these measures alone are insufficient to resolve the root issue: the lack of a reliable piped water supply.

We have consistently engaged with municipal authorities, urging them to restore and improve the piped water infrastructure. Despite receiving assurances, concrete actions are still lacking. It is imperative that the government recognizes the gravity of this issue and invests in sustainable water management solutions, including repairing and expanding the existing water supply network and enforcing regulations to prevent illegal water extraction.

Fostering a culture of water conservation within our community is crucial. Educational campaigns, workshops, and incentives for water-saving behaviors can significantly change mindsets and habits. Collaboration with neighboring communities is also vital to advocate for regional solutions, understanding that water management is a collective responsibility.

In conclusion, the water crisis in our high-rise community is a pressing issue that demands immediate and concerted action. By working together, both within our community and with external stakeholders, we can address the challenges of groundwater depletion and ensure a sustainable water future for ourselves and future generations.

Challenging The Holy And The Horrible

Maharaj – Challenging The Holy And The Horrible

The best thing one can say about Maharaj, released on Netflix, based on a true story of a libel suit in 1862 about a Hindu priest’s misuse of his temporal powers to exploit women devotees, is to stress its relevance after 162 years.

It is a grim reminder of religious and sect gurus mushrooming all across India. Their following thrives even after their conviction for grave crimes, including rape of minor girls, and imprisonment. Of the six listed in the media reports who are either convicted or wanted by law, Asaram Bapu’s plea for suspension of sentence on health grounds was rejected by the Supreme Court on March 1, this year.

Jailed for rape and murder, Gurmeet Ram Rabim of Sirsa, Haryana, gets multiple paroles and furloughs, especially during election time. With lawmakers and ministers coming in their flagged cars to attend and pay obeisance, the collusion with the political class is too obvious to be missed. But it does not stir any protest these days.

Nothing seems to stop people from worshipping humans who act as gods and garner riches and influence and a multitude of dedicated followers. That we are a religious society is a given, but in which other society do such persons thrive? And as an important aside, in which other media, supposedly independent, such people get written/talked about and treated as ‘saints’, ‘seers’, ‘holy men’, ‘godmen’ and more? Criticise them, and be damned – “religious sentiments of the people” are hurt.

Cinema gets away, even if for the sake of mass entertainment, setting examples of good and bad. There was OMG (Oh, My God) in 2012 and some recent films and shows that have portrayed badly behaved spiritual gurus and their brainwashed devotees, including Prakash Jha’s engrossing web series Aashram.

Most of these films are taken to court by supposed devotees or those who enjoy their brief media projection. Political leaders also join in. Besieged with too many controversies, the judiciary respects the Censor Board as the final authority. The Gujarat High Court cleared Maharaj without a cut or caution, while Hamare Barah, a film that alludes to Muslims having too many children and multiple marriages, was allowed to be released with a few cuts.

The Gujarat High Court observed that Maharaj did not target the Vaishnav Pushtimarg sect as alleged by its members who had petitioned against its release claiming that it hurt their religious sentiments. The film has nothing objectionable or derogatory, the court said.

The Maharaj theme developed in the 19th-century tussle between the conservatives who posed as ‘nationalists’ and the British rulers and British education-inspired reformers in many parts of India. It produced the likes of Raja Rammohun Roy. Brahmo Samaj in Bengal embraced a liberal and inclusive theological perspective, drawing inspiration from diverse religious traditions and advocating for religious syncretism. Similar examples abounded in other parts of 19th-century British India. Unsurprisingly, Karsandas Mulji, the journalist-reformer and the film’s protagonist, was mentored by Dadabhai Naoroji.

The film is based on a Gujarati novel by Saurabh Shah, who says that his converting the “Maharaj Libel Suit” into a novel was to stress the issue’s relevance “in the present times in that young women continue to be exploited in the name of religion”, to rekindle the public faith in religion that is shaken when such incidents come to light in the media and the social discourse.

ALSO READ: Devi Bhimji – A Gujarati Who Became Malayalam Media Mogul

Besides public debate, Maharaj has led to scholarly work, including doctoral dissertations in India and abroad. In 2010, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, then the Gujarat Chief Minister, praised Karsandas Mulji’s efforts in promoting women’s rights and social change, highlighting his importance in India’s struggle for independence and social progress.

Besides the exploitation of women perpetuated by the Pushtimarg sect through practices and rituals, the film is about a libel suit. Jadunathji Maharaj, the high priest with his temple located in south Mumbai’s Bhuleshwar, went before the Supreme Court of Bombay, as it was then called. Karsandas claimed that the Pushtimarg was not the “true” Hinduism of the Vedic age, but rather a heretic sect that encouraged devotees to hand over their wives and daughters for the maharajas’ pleasure.

Although secular and working under the Anglo-Saxon jurisprudence, the court took up the case that belonged to the realm of divinity. The bench and the lawyers on both sides were Britons. Several witnesses on both sides, including experts and doctors, were examined. The judiciary was fair and just in commending, and not convicting the journalist-publisher duo. “A public journalist is a public teacher: the true function of the press, that by virtue of which it has rightly grown to be one of the great powers of the modern world — is the function of teaching, elevating and enlightening those who fall within the range of its influence,” said chief judge Joseph Arnould. Jadunath was ordered to pay ₹11,500 to Karsandas Mulji who, incidentally, had spent ₹14,000 in fighting the case. After Maharaj’s debacle, the system of Charan Seva, akin to Devadasi system, that led to female devotees’  exploitation, ended.

Now, the film, its flow and its flaws. Bollywood biggie Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan plays Karsandas, a beacon of virtue in a conservative world, advocating widow remarriage and smilingly borrowing chutney from the plate of a Dalit, an ‘untouchable’. His intensely personal motive to rebel against Jadunath and expose his sexual liaisons to the wider public comes from Karsan’s fiance, Kishori becoming one of the priest’s numerous victims. While he is a rebel, she is not. She commits suicide after Karsan breaks off their engagement in disgust. While commending Karsan’s reformist zeal, the court overrides the ‘revenge’ angle.

The bulk of the film is constructed as a battle of attrition between Karsandas (Junaid) and Jadunath, (called JJ by devotees). brilliantly played by Jaideep Ahlawat. A charismatic figure, JJ casts a spell over his flock, preying on the vulnerability and indoctrination of female devotees and exploiting them sexually. Everyone appears to be in the thrall of JJ. Only Karsandas, although a believer and a Vaishnav himself, appears immune, having grown up questioning the superstitious practices of his orthodox sect. He does not question the faith itself or the temple. He is essentially a 19th-century social reformer. Some present-day critics do not find him radical enough but fail to see the continuation of the same practices.

Sadly, despite the Bollywood masala, like raas-garba in a Gujarati setting, the well-meaning Maharaj is a tepid affair. Junaid is unfailingly industrious in that endeavour but is unable to conceal the enormity and extent of the effort that a poor script demands. Perhaps, because he is a debutant, so is the film’s director Sidharth P. Malhotra. Both come across as sincere but have a lot to learn. Junaid, from his father. He doesn’t have Aamir’s baby face. Till the other day, Aamir carried himself as a university lad – with de-ageing make-up and camera techniques.

Maharaj is about one extraordinary man’s fight against a powerful spiritual guru. It is also about an all-out battle between religious manipulation and individual resistance. That makes the effort worthwhile – and as stated at the outset, a good reminder for today.

The Shiromani Akal Dal

Shiromani Leaders Launch Revolt Against Badal

The Shiromani Akal Dal is facing a crisis after senior leaders, including Parminder Singh Dhindsa, Bidi Jagir Kaur, among others, launched a revolt against party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, demanding change in the leadership after the party’s severe drubbing in the recent Lok Sabha elections.

Some leaders of the party held a meeting in Jalandhar seeking Badal’s resignation. However, some other leaders in the Akali Dal continue to repose faith in Badal.

Rebel leader Parminder Singh Dhindsa held a meeting in Jalandhar yesterday in which workers and senior leaders expressed their views openly to revive the party.

Dhindsa said that the leaders and workers have expressed concern over the defeat in the Lok Sabha elections in which out of the 13 parliamentary states in Punjab the SAD managed towin only one seat. The Bathinda Lok Sabha seat was retained by Badal’s wife Harsimrat.

According to former Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Bibi Jagir Kaur, whenever they tried to discuss anything with Badal, he did not listen to them.

“There was a discussion regarding what we lost and gained in recent times. All supporters of SAD (Shiromani Akali Dal) are worried about how to rise back from the situation in which we are. We have tried to speak to the party chief (Sukhbir Singh Badal) but he never listens to us. He does not try to rectify the shortcomings. So everyone thought that if the SAD is to be strengthened, then all of us should sit together and have a discussion… We are worried about why the people of Punjab are not accepting us. We will go to the Akal Takht Sahib on July 1 and ask for forgiveness for the losses that occurred because of our silence,” Kaur told ANI.

Akali Dal leader Daljit Singh Cheema addressing a press conference yesterday said that the SAD is analysing and introspecting the remarks.

“In a democracy, there is always a difference of opinion. If one or two people have a difference of opinion, then it is not a revolt. but there is a system. Party analysis and introspection are still going on.”

Cheema said that a working committee meeting of the party will be held today.

“If you express your opinion before the meeting, then that becomes doubtful. It looks preplanned. It looks as if you are not interested in the improvement or upliftment of the party and you said something just because you wanted to. Otherwise, there was a need to wait. They should have participated and listened to what others had to say. After that, they could have presented their views,” Cheema said.

Talking to ANI yesterday, Cheema said, “We are reviewing the reasons behind our performance in Lok Sabha elections…SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal had earlier stated if the party wanted he would step down from the post of President but all the district presidents and constituency incharges refused…SAD is a very strong and disciplined party and we are hopeful that the party will move forward with strength…”

SAD party’s core committee member, Balwinder Singh Bhundal, who held another meeting to support Sukhbir Singh Badal, said that 99 per cent of the members are standing with him.

“The way the workers have attended today’s meeting shows that 99 per cent of the Akali Dal members are standing with the party chief, Sukhbir Singh Badal. The party chief is not changed at the behest of a few people,” Bhundal said.

Bhundal further said there was no question of forming any alliance with the BJP in the future.

“Neither now nor in the future will we make any compromise with the BJP. We will not take any action against those who are trying to show their solidarity by separating from the party. Our elders have built this party by making sacrifices. There is no need to separate those who are already talking about separating from the party or going outside. It is their own wish and freedom,” he the senior Akali Dal leader said. (ANI)

Britannia Industries Limited west Bengal

WB Govt Denies Britannia Exit, Confirms Company Commitment

The West Bengal government, on Tuesday, made it clear that Britannia Industries Limited, a major FMCG brand, has no plans to exit the state and that the company is “fully committed” to West Bengal.

Dr Amit Mitra, Principal Chief Advisor to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, issued this statement on behalf of the state government following a political row over the shutdown of Britannia’s Taratala plant.

At a press conference held at the State Secretariat, in Nabanna, Mitra said he spoke with the Managing Director of Britannia Industries, Varun Berry, who assured him that the company was “fully committed” to West Bengal.

“There’s a complete falsehood being stated not only on social media but also in some mainstream media that Britannia has run away from the state. The Managing Director of Britannia called and said that they are fully committed to West Bengal. They are producing between Rs 1,000-1,200 crore worth of products in the state, which will continue,” said Dr Amit Mitra on Tuesday while speaking to ANI.

Earlier, on June 24, in-charge of BJP’s National Information & Technology Dept and co-incharge West Bengal, Amit Malviya, tweeted on X about the shutdown of Britannia Industries’ factory, emphasizing how it starkly epitomizes the decline of Bengal, a region once celebrated for its cultural and intellectual contributions.

“Bengal, already mired in severe unemployment exacerbated by the TMC’s extortion and syndicate, now faces an even more dire predicament with the factory’s closure, triggering massive layoffs. Unfortunately, Bengal’s destiny is now ensnared by the twin curses of ‘Unionbaji’ and ‘Tolabaji’. The pressing question remains: when will Bengal be emancipated from this curse?”, Malviya added.

Amit Malviya ended the tweet with the hashtag “AntiBengalMamata”. (ANI)

Om Birla Speaker Lok Sabha

Om Birla Elected Speaker Of 18th LS By Voice Vote

National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate and MP from Kota, Om Birla has been elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

The motion moved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and seconded by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was adopted by the house through a voice vote.

The house echoed with ‘Ayes’ and ‘Noes’ and the pro-tem speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab declared Om Birla as the Speaker of the lower house. The opposition which had filed K Suresh as the Speaker candidate of the INDIA bloc did not press for a division vote.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi also extended wishes to Birla and accompanied him to the chair along with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and PM Modi.

After the INDIA bloc fielded K Suresh as its candidate, the appointment of Speaker became interesting as the election was held for the first time in decades.

Traditionally, the Lok Sabha Speaker and Deputy Speaker are elected through consensus between the ruling party and the Opposition.

The contest between BJP’s Om Birla, a three-time MP from Kota in Rajasthan, and Kodikunnil Suresh, an eight-term parliamentarian from Kerala’s Mavelikara came after the NDA refused to accept the opposition INDIA bloc’s demand that the Deputy Speaker’s position be left for the Opposition in exchange for its support to the NDA nominee.

The NDA, which commands 293 MPs in the 543-member Lok Sabha, was able to demonstrate its clear majority to ensure that Om Birla returns to the chair he held in the 17th Lok Sabha.

The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha began on June 24 and will conclude on July 3. The 264th Session of Rajya Sabha will commence on June 27 and conclude on July 3. On June 27, President Murmu is scheduled to address a joint sitting of both houses of Parliament. (ANI)

India Slams Pak For Baseless, Deceitful Narratives At UN General Assembly

India has slammed Pakistan for its “baseless and deceitful narratives,” after Islamabad’s envoy Munir Akram made references to Kashmir in his speech at the UN General Assembly.

While delivering a statement at the UNGA debate on the annual report, Pratik Mathur, the Minister at India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, said that one delegation “misused” this forum to spread “deceitful and baseless” narratives.

Mathur said, “Earlier in the day, one delegation misused this forum to spread baseless and deceitful narratives, which is not a surprise. I will not dignify these remarks with any response just to save valuable time of this august body.”

His remarks came after Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UN during the debate at the UN General Assembly called for monitoring the implementation of resolutions, including those on Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan regularly brings up the Jammu and Kashmir issue at UN platforms and other some international forums, irrespective of the agenda of the meetings.

India has repeatedly rejected Pakistan’s attempts to raise the Kashmir issue on international platforms, asserting that the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir as well as Ladakh are “integral parts of India” and Pakistan has no “locus standi” to make statements regarding India’s domestic matters.

During the UNGA debate, Pratik Mathur on Tuesday stressed the need for a comprehensive reform of the Security Council with expansion of both permanent and non-permanent members.

“We welcome the opportunity to participate in the debate on the Report of the Security Council. We thank the members of the Security Council and the Secretariat for producing the annual report of the Security Council.,” Mathur said.

“India also joins others in congratulating new incoming members for having been elected to the Council for the period 2025-2026. We look forward to working with them in a constructive and positive manner,” he added.

The Indian diplomat pointed out that the UN Charter bestows on the report a profound seriousness, as is evident from the fact that there exists a separate provision mandating such a report, rather than clubbing it with the provision for reports from other UN bodies.

“The annual report of the Security Council must inform, highlight and analyse the measures that it has decided upon or taken to maintain international peace and security during the reporting period,” the Indian diplomat said.

“However, the debate on the annual report has become a ritual without much substance. The annual reports have become compendium containing details of the meetings, briefers, and outcome documents. Last year, only six monthly reports were compiled-reflecting lack of interest among the members about this ritual.,” he further said.

Mathur also stated that the annual report is also meant to be an analysis on the UN peacekeeping operations, but in reality there is little information on how peacekeeping operations. He also said there should be a definite timeline for completing the report, circulating to wider General Assembly members and holding the debate.

“The annual report, in its truest form, is also meant to be an analysis on the UN peacekeeping operations, the flagship tool for the maintenance of international peace and security. However, in reality, we find there is little information on how peacekeeping operations are run, on the problems they face, on why certain mandates are set or changed, or on when and why they are strengthened, scaled down or ended. As most peacekeepers are contributed by non-Council members, who put the lives of their troops at risk to serve the cause of international peace, a better partnership between the Security Council and the Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) is needed,” Mathur said

Mathur stressed the need to bring the Council in line with its Charter responsibility to act on behalf of the entire membership, adding that the only remedy is a “comprehensive reform of the Security Council,” involving expansion in its permanent and non-permanent categories.

“It is high time to bring the Council in line with its Charter responsibility to act on behalf of the entire Membership. This will not be achieved without enhancing the membership in both the categories — permanent and non-permanent members,” Mathur said.

“We remain convinced that the only remedy is a comprehensive reform of the Security Council, involving expansion in its permanent and non-permanent categories. Only this will enable the Council to manage effectively today’s conflicts around the globe as well as the increasingly complex and interconnected global challenges it faces today,” he added.

He further added that the Security Council too needs to prove its credibility and improve its performance, at a time when performance assessment has become one of the focus areas at the United Nations. (ANI)

Arvind Kejriwal CBI

CBI Formally Arrests Kejriwal In The Excise Policy Case

The CBI has formally arrested Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday. The development came after the Rouse Avenue Court allowed the CBI to examine Kejriwal in the courtroom and asked it to place on record the material that they have for his arrest

Kejriwal was brought to Rouse Avenue Court by CBI on Wednesday morning for a hearing in the excise policy case where Kejriwal’s wife Sunita Kejriwal also accompanied him.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court will also hear Arvind Kejriwal’s petition against the Delhi High Court order putting an interim stay on his bail in the money laundering case linked to liquor excise policy.

The probe agency had on Tuesday examined the AAP supremo in Tihar Jail and recorded his statement related to the Excise Policy case.

Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) lawyer also posted on X and said, “The dirty tricks of the Modi government fears the release of Arvind Kejriwal by SC has asked CBI to arrest him in the same matter almost a year after he joined the investigation. What it shows nothing changed the vindictive mindset of the BJP. Shame.”

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday stayed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s bail order passed by the trial court, saying that the trial court should have at least recorded its satisfaction with the fulfilment of twin conditions of section 45 of Prevention of the Money Laundering Act (PMLA) before passing the impugned order.

The vacation bench of Justice Sudhir Kumar Jain, while passing the order, said that documents and arguments were not appreciated properly by the trial court.

A vacation bench of Justices Manoj Misra and SVN Bhatti observed that the decision of the High Court to grant an interim stay on Kejriwal’s bail without passing a final order in the matter was “unusual”. (ANI)

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi Dalits OBCs and Adivasis.

Cong Declares Rahul As Leader Of Opposition In 18th Lok Sabha

Congress on Tuesday declared that Rahul Gandhi, party’s MP from Raebareli will be Leader of the Opposition in the 18th Lok Sabha, ending the 10-year spell of no LoP in the Lower House since 2014.

“Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has been appointed as the LoP in the Lok Sabha..” Venugopal said while addressing the media here in the national capital.

Notably, Lok Sabha did not have Leader of Opposition in the last 10 years because no political party, other than the ruling party, was able to secure the minimum Lok Sabha seats required to nominate a Leader of the Opposition.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, the Congress emerged as the second-largest party with 52 seats. This was three short of the requisite numbers. In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the Congress, again the second largest party, won 44 Lok Sabha seats — way below the mark.

After the 2024 Lok Sabha Polls, the Congress emerged as the second-largest party in the election and improved its tally to 100, from 52 in the 2019 Lok Sabha poll. The total tally of the INDIA bloc stood at 234.

The announcement of Rahul Gandhi as LoP comes a day before the election for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker.

Rahul Gandhi won from both Raebareli and Wayanad Lok Sabha constituencies in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls. While Rahul Gandhi won with a margin of 364422 votes from Wayanad defeating Communist Party of India’s Annie Raja, in Raebareli, he won with a margin of 390030 votes from Raebareli defeating Bharatiya Janata Party’s Dinesh Pratap Singh.

However, after Rahul Gandhi announced that he would resign as an MP from Wayanad and will keep the Raebareli constituency, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced Priyanka Gandhi’s candidature from Wayanad last week.

If Priyanka Gandhi wins from Wayanad, three members of the Nehru-Gandhi family will be in Parliament – Sonia Gandhi in Rajya Sabha and Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi in the Lok Sabha.

Earlier today, Gandhi took the oath as the Member of Parliament, carrying a copy of the Constitution in his hands.

The leader of the largest opposition party having not less than one-tenth seats of the total strength of the Lok Sabha is recognised as the leader of the Opposition.

He will be a member of crucial committees such as Public Accounts (Chairman), Public Undertakings, Estimates and several Joint Parliamentary Committees.

He is entitled to be a member of various selection committees responsible for appointing heads of statutory bodies like the Central Vigilance Commission, the Central Information Commission, the CBI, the NHRC, and the Lokpal.

He provides constructive criticism of the government policies and to provide an alternative government.

The leader of Opposition in both the Houses were accorded statutory recognition under the Salaries and Allowances of Leader of Opposition in Parliament Act, 1977 and are entitled to the salary, allowances and other facilities equivalent to that of a cabinet minister.

The office of the leader of the opposition is not mentioned in the Constitution. (ANI)
