Modi 3.0 Must Move Beyond Temple and Statues

‘Modi 3.0 Must Move Beyond Temple, Statues and Vistas’

Kashish, an aspiring journalist, says Ram Temple or new grand structures will not generate employment for the teeming jobless millions. Her views:

No matter how much our current government is speaking about its glorious work – that it has increased the respect and dignity of India abroad – only ‘us’ know the real condition of our country. In this ‘us’, I am including the people who are hustling for a good job, a good income and a good life. This includes the vast majority of the poor. Yes, I am talking about the youth who are unemployed, even after acquiring the best of educational qualification.

In a recent study, it is revealed that many highly qualified people are filling forms for government jobs like peons, helpers, cleaners, and other low-level posts. This tells us the state of mass unemployment in contemporary India.

Rising joblessness and inflation are the reasons behind this terrible state of affairs. And the main point of concern is that the Indian government is refusing to do anything!

People in India are stuck between the private and government sectors. In the private sector, there are long working hours, less payouts terrible working conditions, and no job-security. Government jobs are like lucky draw coupons – there are too many aspirants and very few jobs!

Hence, there is huge competition in the face of low vacancies. Youngsters like me are afraid and depressed due to this rise and rise of unemployment stalking the nation.

Inflation is on the rise making the survival of the middle class and poor difficult. The saddest part is that our government never wants to talk about unemployment, inflation and other crucial issues; its favourite subject seems to be solely religion, and nothing else.

Tell me, where are the ‘acche din’ as promised by the prime minister of India?

Kashish yearns for an equitable society shorn of differences and discord

Take the NEET paper leak case. The exam involved the emotions and mental health of thousands of students. The sleepless nights and early mornings, bereft of all joys of ordinary life and youth, merely to prepare for an exam on which their future depended. Most of these students come from humble backgrounds; some of them from below the poverty line. For them, it becomes well-nigh impossible to prepare again and again for the same exam, because they have to look for work to sustain their families.

One of my friends secured 670 marks in the exam. He is now in serious depression, because he will not get admission into a ‘dream college’. Who will help him now? When doctors or other professionals make a serious mistake, they are fired! Why should the officers of NTA be not held accountable?

As a journalism student, I can only hope for an honest investigation. The multi-million Ram temple at Ayodha, massive statues and cricket stadiums costing millions, don’t mean anything to us, or, the poor. As young citizens, we do not aspire for these things. We yearn for a peaceful, harmonious and developed society, with no income gap between the rich and poor; a society which supports the poorest of the poor.

Tragically, this seems much too difficult in the Modi era!

The PM’s sole purpose in life seems to promote Hindutva – is he not the prime minister of a secular and pluralist country? Is religion not a private affair? Is it not his duty to treat every religion equally?

He is only promoting temples, statues, stadiums and a new Parliament. How does this help the young? We need a development model which serves the poor and ordinary folks. Tell me, will the Ram Mandir provide jobs and security to the millions? The answer is: No!

Lok Sabha speaker congress party

Cong Issues Three-Line-Whip To Its MPs To Be Present In Parliament Tomorrow

Ahead of the elections for the post of Lok Sabha speaker, the Congress party has issued a three-line whip to its MPs to be present in Parliament tomorrow from 11 a.m. onwards, an official statement by party said.

“All members of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha are requested to kindly remain present in the House from 11 a.m. onwards till the adjournment of the House on June 26 without fail and support the party stand”, the official release read.

Having failed to reach a consensus on the appointment of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Om Birla, the opposition INDIA bloc has nominated Congress MP K Suresh for the post of Lok Sabha speaker.

The opposition had been demanding the post of Deputy Speaker, however, with no clarity forthcoming from the BJP, the INDIA bloc has put forward Congress MP K Suresh’s name for the Speaker’s post.

On the other hand, BJP has nominated its Kota MP Om Birla for the Speaker’s post, who previously served as the Speaker in the 17th Lok Sabha.

Earlier, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that they had informed Rajnath Singh that the Opposition is prepared to support NDA’s Speaker candidate, on the condition that the Deputy Speaker position is given to the opposition.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi said, “We have said to Rajnath Singh that we will support their Speaker (candidate) but the convention is that the post of Deputy Speaker is given to the Opposition.”

Further elaborating on discussions between Rajnath Singh and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul also criticised the treatment of opposition leaders, alleging disrespect.

“Today it is written in the newspaper that PM Modi has said that the Opposition should cooperate with the government constructively. Rajnath Singh called Mallikarjun Kharge and he asked him to extend support to the Speaker. The entire Opposition said that we would support the speaker, but the convention is that the Deputy Speaker post should be given to the opposition. Rajnath Singh said that he would call back Mallikarjun Kharge but he has not done that yet…PM Modi is asking for cooperation from Opposition but our leader is getting insulted,” he said.

The elections for the speaker’s post will be held on June 26. The NDA, which commands 293 MPs in the 543-member Lok Sabha, holds a clear majority, while the opposition INDIA bloc comprises 234 MPs. (ANI)

Rahul Gandhi Lok Sabha

Rahul Takes Oath As LS MP With Copy Of Constitution In His Hand

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took oath in Lok Sabha as a Member of Parliament (MP) from Raebareli on Tuesday with a copy of the Constitution in his hand.

He was part of the remaining MPs who took their oaths today after a total of 262 newly elected MPs, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, did so on Monday, the inaugural session of the 18th Lok Sabha.

Yesterday too, while Prime Minister Modi approached the stage to take his oath yesterday, Rahul Gandhi was seen displaying a copy of the Constitution.

“I, Rahul Gandhi… Having been elected a member of the House of People, do solemnly affirm that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established, that I will uphold the sovereignty and integrity of India, and that I will faithfully discharge the duty upon which I am about to enter. Jia Hind Jai Samvidan,” the social media platform X of Congress Party posted alongside a video of Rahul Gandhi’s oath taking.

Congress Parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi and party’s general secretary, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had also arrived at the Parliament for Rahul’s oath-taking ceremony.

Besides Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Mahua Moitra, Supriya Sule and Kanimozhi are some of the key leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc who are taking oath on the second day of the 18th Lok Sabha.

Rahul Gandhi won from both Raebareli and Wayanad Lok Sabha constituencies in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls. While Rahul Gandhi won with a margin of 364422 votes from Wayanad defeating Communist Party of India’s Annie Raja, in Raebareli, he won with a margin of 390030 votes from Raebareli defeating Bharatiya Janata Party’s Dinesh Pratap Singh.

After Rahul Gandhi announced that he would resign as an MP from Wayanad and will keep the Raebareli constituency, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced Priyanka Gandhi’s candidature from Wayanad last week.

If Priyanka Gandhi wins from Wayanad, three members of the Nehru-Gandhi family will be in Parliament – Sonia Gandhi in Rajya Sabha and Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi in the Lok Sabha.

Meanwhile, efforts by the BJP’s top leadership to reach a consensus on the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha came to nought when the INDIA bloc decided to nominate 8-time MP K Suresh for the post.

His nomination followed the filing of nomination by BJP’s Kota MP Om Birla for the same position. Birla previously served as the Speaker in the 17th Lok Sabha.

This will be the first time that elections are held for the Speaker of the lower house, as traditionally the Lok Sabha Speaker and Deputy Speaker have been elected by consensus between the ruling party and the opposition.

Earlier, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that they had informed Rajnath Singh that the Opposition is prepared to support NDA’s Speaker candidate, on the condition that the Deputy Speaker position is given to the opposition. (ANI)

Modi May Visit Russia In July: Russian State Media

India and Russia are making arrangements for an upcoming visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Russia, Reuters reported, citing, Russian state news agency RIA, on Tuesday.

According to RIA, a diplomatic source indicated that PM Modi’s visit may take place in July.

The Kremlin had previously announced in March that Modi had an outstanding invitation to visit Russia, confirming that a meeting between PM Modi and President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to take place, Reuters reported.

Putin was sworn-in as the President of Russia for the fifth consecutive time in May this year, while Narendra Modi too took the oath as Prime Minister of India for the third consecutive term on June 9.

“The Russian President warmly congratulated Narendra Modi on the success of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the recent general parliamentary elections,” the Russian President said in an official statement earlier.

If the visit takes place, it will be PM Modi’s maiden trip to Russia since 2019, and also the first since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

President Putin last visited New Delhi in 2021 for the annual India-Russia Summit, which hasn’t been held in the past two years.

PM Modi last met Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit at Samarkand in Uzbekistan on September 16, 2022, when he called him to follow the path of dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the Ukraine conflict.

In spite of growing strategic and security ties with the US and other key Western players, India has refrained from publicly criticising Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. India even ramped up the purchase of Russian crude despite initial pressure from the US, saying such a move is required to control domestic oil prices.

However, India has time and again advocated for a cessation of hostilities in the Ukraine conflict and a return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy to find a lasting solution. (ANI)

Ajit's MLAs

Sharad Opens Up On Speculations Of Return Of Ajit’s MLAs

Amid the speculations that some of the MLAs of the Ajit Pawar camp are willing to return to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)-SP, NCP-SP Chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday clarified that those who wanted to “weaken” the party would not be taken in.

However, the veteran NCP leader added that those MLAs who would not “hurt” the image of the party would be taken back, but after having a word with the party leaders and workers.

Addressing the media in Maharashtra’s Mumbai, Sharad Pawar said, “Those who wanted to weaken the party would not be taken in. But those leaders who would help strengthen the organisation and not hurt the image of the party would be taken in.”

“However, that too will happen after having a word with the party (NCP-SP) leaders and workers”, he added.

Following the Ajit Pawar camp’s poor showing in Maharashtra in the Lok Sabha polls, there is growing speculation that some of the MLAs of the camp are willing to return to the NCP-SP ahead of the state assembly polls.

The NCP bagged only one of the four seats it contested, whereas the NCP-SP won eight of the ten seats it contested.

The Mahayuti alliance — Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena and the NCP — collectively bagged 17 seats in Maharashtra with BJP securing nine seats and the Shiv Sena seven.

Meanwhile, the leaders of the Ajit Pawar-led NCP were reportedly upset over being offered the post of Minister of State (MoS) in the Modi 3.0 cabinet.

NCP leader Praful Patel had been offered the post of MoS, however, he turned it down saying that accepting the position of Minister of State with independent charge in the Union Cabinet would be considered a demotion for him, as he was earlier a Cabinet Minister in the Union Government.

During the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, under the leadership of then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Patel was the cabinet minister for the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises.

Earlier, Ajit Pawar had said that his party is going to wait for the BJP to change its offer to its ally. (ANI)

T20 WC: Afghanistan Qualify For Semis After Beating Bangladesh By 8 Runs

Afghanistan qualified for the semi-final of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 after beating Bangladesh by eight runs in the Super Eights match at the Arnos Vale Ground on Tuesday.

Rashid Khan and Naveen-ul-Haq led the Afghan bowling attack and helped their side defend the given target of 115. The second inning of the match was reduced to 19 overs, and the target was 114 runs after Rain played a spoilsport in the second inning.

After the defeat, Mitchell Marsh-led Australia are also out of the tournament. The Aussies ended up in third place in the Group 1 table of the Super Eights with just two points.

Litton Das (54* runs from 49 balls, 5 fours, and 1 six) was the only standout batter for the Tigers after his unbeaten knock.

Soumya Sarkar (10 runs from 10 balls, 1 four) and Towhid Hridoy (14 runs from 9 balls, 2 fours) tried their best to form a partnership with Litton, but they struggled to face the Afghan bowlers, who were ferocious while defending the target.

Naveen-ul-Haq and Rashid Khan picked up four wickets each in their respective spells. Fazalhaq Farooqi and Gulbadin Naib also bagged one wicket each in their respective spells and helped the Afghan side win the match by eight runs.

Naveen removed Mustafizur Rahman from the crease in the fifth ball of the 18th over to end the match early.

Naveen-ul-Haq was named the ‘Player of the Match’ after he displayed a stupendous performance while defending the target given by Afghanistan.

Recapping the first inning of the match, after winning the toss, Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan decided to bat first. However, their decision did not go in their favour as they struggled to add runs to the scoreboard.

Afghanistan had a great start to the match after openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (43 runs from 55 balls, 3 fours and 1 six) and Ibrahim Zadran (18 runs from 29 balls, 1 four) played a 59-run partnership.

Rishad Hossain made the first breakthrough of the game after he removed Zadran in the 11th over. Azmatullah Omarzai (10 runs from 12 balls) tried his best to contribute to the game but failed to make a mark after Mustafizur Rahman dismissed him in the 16th over.

Even though Bangladesh failed to take quick wickets, they were successful in keeping a check on Afghanistan’s run rate in the first inning.

Gurbaz’s knock came to an end in the first ball of the 17th over after Rishad Hossain bagged his wicket. The Afghan opener missed his half-century for just seven runs.

Gulbadin Naib (4 runs from 3 balls, 1 four) and Mohammad Nabi (1 run from 5 balls) did not contribute in the first inning for Afghanistan.

In the end, skipper Rashid Khan (19* runs from 10 balls, 3 sixes) and Karim Janat (7 runs from 6 balls, 1 four) stayed on the crease and powered Afghanistan to 115/5 after the end of the 20 overs.

Rishad Hossain led the Bangladesh bowling attack after he picked up three wickets and gave 26 runs in his four-over spell. Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed also bagged one wicket each in their respective spells.

Brief score: Afghanistan 115/5 (Rahmanullah Gurbaz 43, Rashid Khan 19, Ibrahim Zadran 18; Rishad Hossain 3/26) beat Bangladesh 105 (Litton Das 54, Towhid Hridoy 14, Soumya Sarkar 10; Rashid Khan 4/23). (ANI)

Deputy Speaker Opposition

Oppo Wants Dy Speaker Should Be Ours: Rahul

After senior cabinet minister Rajnath Singh reached out to Opposition leaders on behalf of the government in a bid to build consensus for the post of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that they had conveyed Rajnath Singh that opposition is ready to extend support to NDA’s Speaker candidate, but the post of Deputy Speaker should be given to the opposition.

Interacting with Media on Tuesday, Rahul said, “We have said to Rajnath Singh that we will support their Speaker (candidate) but the convention is that the post of Deputy Speaker be given to opposition.”

Further, detailing about talks that happened between Rajnath Singh and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul also alleged that Opposition leaders are getting “insulted”.

INDIA bloc BJP speaker

No Consensus On Speaker, INDIA Bloc’s K Suresh Fielded Against Om Birla For Post

Efforts by the BJP’s top leadership to broker a consensus on the position of the speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha came to naught when the INDIA bloc decided to field 8-time MP K Suresh for the post. His nomination followed the filing of a nomination by the BJP’s Kota MP Om Birla for the post. Birla was the speaker in the 17th Lok Sabha as well.

This will be the first time that elections will be held for the Speaker of the lower house. Since independence, the Lok Sabha Speaker and deputy Speaker have been elected by consensus between the ruling party and the opposition. The elections for the post will be held on June 26.

BJP MP Piyush Goyal said there was no precedent to suggest that the deputy speaker’s post must go to the opposition, and the opposition was needlessly choosing a showdown.

“They said first decide the name for Deputy Speaker then we will support the Speaker candidate. We condemn such politics. A good tradition would have been to choose the Speaker unanimously. The Speaker does not belong to any party or opposition; he belongs to the entire House. Similarly, the Deputy Speaker also does not belong to any party or group; he belongs to the entire House and hence there should be consent of the House. Such conditions that only a particular person or from a particular party should be the Deputy Speaker, do not fit into any tradition of the Lok Sabha.”

Earlier, senior cabinet minister Rajnath Singh had been reaching out to opposition leaders on behalf of the government in a bid to build consensus for the post of Speaker and deputy Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament.
