First World Heritage Committee Meeting

India Set To Host First World Heritage Committee Meeting

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it a “matter of immense joy,” as the nation is set to host the meeting of the World Heritage Committee for the first time.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to inaugurate the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Sunday evening.

“It’s a matter of immense joy that India is hosting the meeting of the World Heritage Committee in New Delhi. This is the first time our nation is hosting this committee. I look forward to attending the programme at 7 PM tomorrow evening. This is an important forum to exchange views on ways to preserve our heritage,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

According to a PMO release, the Prime Minister will also address the gathering on occasion. The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, will also attend the inaugural event, the release said.

India is hosting the World Heritage Committee meeting for the first time. It will take place from July 21 to 31, 2024, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

The World Heritage Committee meets once a year and is responsible for managing all matters pertaining to World Heritage and deciding on sites to be inscribed on the World Heritage List. During this meeting, proposals for nominating new sites on the World Heritage List, State of Conservation reports of 124 existing World Heritage properties, International Assistance and Utilisation of World Heritage Funds, etc., will be discussed.

The meeting will be attended by more than 2000 international and national delegates from more than 150 countries.

Along with the World Heritage Committee Meeting, the World Heritage Young Professionals’ Forum and the World Heritage Site Managers’ Forum are also being held on the sidelines.

Further, various exhibitions will also be set up at Bharat Mandapam to showcase India’s culture. The Return of Treasures Exhibition will showcase some of the retrieved artefacts brought back to the country. To date, more than 350 artefacts have been brought back.

Further, by using the latest AR and VR technologies, an immersive experience will be offered for 3 world heritage sites in India: Rani ki Vav, Patan, Gujarat; Kailasa Temple, Ellora Caves, Maharashtra; and Hoysala Temple, Halebid, Karnataka, the release said.

Also, an ‘Incredible India’ exhibition will be set up to highlight India’s rich cultural heritage, age-old civilisation, geographical diversity, tourism destinations and modern developments in the field of information technology and infrastructure, it added. (ANI)

Porbandar flood

44 Rescued In Porbandar, 600 Staying In Shelter Homes: Mandaviya

After heavy rains lashed Porbandar and left many rivers flooded, Union Minister and Porbandar MP Mansukh Mandaviya said that 44 people have been rescued and shifted to safe places, adding that 600 people were staying in shelter homes.

Mansukh Mandaviya said, “Porbandar is my Lok Sabha constituency. Heavy rains have occurred in the last 3 days, and due to the rains, many rivers in Porbandar district have also flooded. Flood water has entered many houses. 44 people have been rescued and shifted to safe places. More than 600 people are staying in shelter homes, and they are being provided with all the facilities there. The entire district administration and our public representatives are with the people in this disaster situation and are taking necessary steps.”

He further said that heavy rain often results in power cuts and waterlogging.

“We have started a call centre at the district collectorate office. Whenever anyone is facing any difficulty, the administration is providing facility so that there is no loss to property or life,” he further added.

Heavy rains in Porbandar, Junagadh and Devbhumi Dwarka districts in Gujarat have caused waterlogging in several areas, resulting in traffic snarls and the closure of some roads, causeways and underpasses, adding to the hardships of the people.

Speaking to ANI about the hardships of the rainwaters, a priest said, “Though the rain in Porbandar has stopped for the last 18 hours, there are a few areas that are under water. Apart from a few areas, even the temples are flooded. The famous Rokadiya Hanuman temple is flooded. Even after rain has stopped since yesterday night, the Rokadiya Hanuman temple is still 1 foot under water.”

Earlier, restoration work on the railway track in Gujarat’s Porbandar, which was affected due to heavy rains and waterlogging, was underway.

The railway officials said that Porbandar city has received around 300 mm of rain in the last few hours, due to which a lot of water has accumulated on the tracks.

“Porbandar city has received around 300 mm of rain in the last few hours. This is unexpected, due to which a lot of water has accumulated on the tracks,” Bhavnagar Railway Division DRM Ravish Kumar told ANI.

He said that rail operations on the route were immediately stopped after waterlogging in the railway track.

Because of the submergence of the Porbandar track, the Delhi Sarai Rohilla-Porbandar Superfast Express had to be halted at Bhanvad town in Gujarat’s Devbhumi Dwarka District on Friday, briefly stranding 250 passengers.

Due to the heavy rain, several parts of Porbandar witnessed severe waterlogging. People were seen wading through knee-deep waters.

Heavy rains lashed Gujarat’s Saurashtra region on Thursday and Friday. (ANI)

Kanwar Yatra Owaisi

Reality Of Hatred For Indian Muslims, Says Owaisi

Amid the row over the Uttar Pradesh government’s directive to food shops on the Kanwar Yatra route to display ID cards, All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi said that it reflects the hatred towards Muslims in India.

Slamming the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and those in the INDIA bloc, Owaisi said that this “visceral hatred” is due to political parties or leaders of Hindutva and those parties who call themselves “secular”.

“Fear on UP’s Kanwar routes: This is The reality of hatred for Indian Muslims, credit for this visceral hatred goes to political parties /leaders of Hindutva and so-called lip servicing Secular parties,” Owaisi said in a post on ‘X’, sharing a photo of an egg stall displaying the name of its owner.

Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal also took a dig at this move asking whether the Kanwar Yatra route is the same as the journey towards ‘Viksit Bharat’.

“Kanwar Yatra Route UP directs eateries including roadside carts to display the names of owners! Is this the route to a “Viksit Bharat”? Divisive agendas will only Divide the country!” Sibal said in a post on ‘x’.

Communist Party Of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat also hit out at the Yogi Adityanath government over this move likening it the Nazi Germany.

“Uttar Pradesh government is destroying the Constitution of India by issuing such orders…A whole community is being humiliated…They are trying to divide society…This type of targeting was done by Nazis in Germany…I condemn it,” Karat said speaking to ANI on Saturday.

Asking courts to step up, the CPIM leader said, “Why are the courts not taking suo-moto action against it?… The order should be withdrawn.”

Meanwhile, BJP leader Mohsin Raza supported the move, stating, “Kanwar Yatra takes place on a large scale in UP. CM Yogi Adityanath has always been attentive to the security of the public.”

“The facilities and management of Kanwar Yatra have always been improved over the last 7 years. This is the eighth year. The government is providing facilities and security. So no one has to hide their name. It also conveys a message of harmony. The opposition is trying to oppose the Kanwar Yatra and not this advisory,” Raza added.

BJP National General Secretary Dushyant Kumar Gautam dismissed concerns, stating, “The public living in areas for which the orders have been passed have no problem. The Muslims have no problem with it; they welcome the Kanwar yatris. Unfortunately, some people are doing politics on it.”

On Friday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath mandated that food and beverage shops along Kanwar routes should display the name and identity of the operator/owner to maintain the sanctity of the pilgrims’ faith.

Additionally, action will be taken against those selling halal-certified products. The move by the Uttar Pradesh government to enforce the use of ID Cards by all shops in the state that fall along the Kanwar Yatra route has resulted in a political slugfest between the BJP and the opposition. (ANI)

CM Arvind Kejriwal Delhi LG

Delhi LG Expresses Concern On Report Of Kejriwal’s Low-Calorie Intake In Jail

The Lieutenant Governor’s Office wrote to Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar on Saturday expressing concern over the reported non-consumption of the prescribed diet by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in jail.

Citing a report from the prison Superintendent, the letter reads, “The report brings out the fact that there are several instances of willful low-calorie intake by the Chief Minister, despite sufficient home-cooked food being provided to him. The diet monitoring chart indicates that between June 6, 2024, and July 13, 2024, the CM had not fully consumed the prescribed diet for all three meals of the day,”

“The report also suggests a loss of weight (now 61.5 kg, which earlier was 63.5 kg on the date of surrender on June 20, 2024). Prima facie, it appears to be due to less calorie intake,” said the letter.

“The LG has expressed concern over the non-consumption of prescribed medical diets and medications by Chief Minister Kejriwal. He has also asked that reasons thereof may be ascertained from him since deviations from the same could also have medical and legal ramifications,” it added.

The letter further said, “Prison authorities may advise the Chief Minister to strictly adhere to the prescribed dosage of medicine and insulin, apart from the diet specified by the dieticians. This is more so given that he has a history of Type-ll Diabetes Mellitus. Strict protocols for monitoring the blood sugar levels may also be established to avoid any ambiguity in this regard.”

The Aam Aadmi Party in its response to the letter questioned the LG’s intention and claimed that there was a genuine threat to the Delhi CM’s life.

AAP leader Sanjay Singh in a post on X said, “What kind of joke are you making, LG Sir? Would a man reduce his sugar levels at night? This is very dangerous. LG Sir, if you do not know about the disease, then you should not write such a letter. God forbid such a time ever comes to you.”

AAP leader and Delhi Minister Atishi alleged that there was a conspiracy at play and said that the Delhi CM was at risk of a brain stroke.

“There is a conspiracy to kill Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. BJP is hatching this conspiracy. The Chief Minister’s sugar level has come below 50 more than 8 times. In such a situation, CM Kejriwal can go into a coma and in such a situation, there is also a risk of brain stroke.”

Earlier, Atishi alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party is doing politics over the health of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.

“He has been a patient with diabetes for the last 30 years, in which the sugar level increases and decreases constantly. There is a chance of serious and chronic disease when the sugar level constantly goes up, but when it suddenly decreases, the condition can be fatal and the patient doesn’t get enough time. That person can get a brain stroke, go into a coma, suffer from a brain haemorrhage, or even die. Arvind Kejriwal Ji’s sugar level has dropped to this point 5 times. It reached 50 and in such cases, the patient is admitted to the hospital, but this Bharatiya Janata Party put his life in danger,” she said.

“From the documents that the BJP had shared, there was a report from the Tihar Jail Medical Officer that clearly stated that there is a problem in the health of Arvind Kejriwal. I would like to tell the BJP – stop playing with the life of Arvind Kejriwal, stop doing politics over his health,” she further said.

On July 15, the Delhi High Court fixed August 7 for a hearing on the Enforcement Directorate’s plea challenging a trial court order granting regular bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in connection with the excise policy money laundering case.

Kejriwal’s lawyers submitted that the Supreme Court has recently granted interim bail to Kejriwal, which we will place on record, and sought time to file a rejoinder in the matter. The bench of Justice Neena Bansal Krishna deferred the matter for August 7, 2024.

ED, in its reply, stated that there is a complete disregard for the vicarious role of Arvind Kejriwal under Section 70 of PMLA. Bail granted to him by the trial court vacation judge is liable to be cancelled, the order granting bail is based on irrelevant consideration or ignores relevant material.

Recently, the Delhi High Court stayed the trial Court order granting bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal while allowing the Enforcement Directorate plea seeking a stay on the trial court order in the excise policy money laundering case. (ANI)

NEET-UG 2024: NTA Declares Centre-Wise Data For Medical Entrance Exam

The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Saturday declared the state-wise and centre-wise data of the results of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024 on the official website.

The Supreme Court on July 18 directed the NTA to announce the results of the NEET UG by July 20.

The applicants will be able to check and download their results on the official website, that is https://neet.ntaonline.in/frontend/web/common-scorecard/index by entering their login credentials.

A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra ordered that result should be published separately, city-wide and centre-wise, by 12 noon on Saturday.

The apex court passed the direction to the NTA to publish the results, after the petitioners-students urged it to direct the testing agency to publish the result of all students to bring in some transparency.

The top court in its order stated, “The petitioners have submitted that it would be appropriate if the results of the NEET-UG 24 exam is published on the website so as to bring about some transparency on the centre-wise marks obtained by candidates. We direct the NTA to publish the marks obtained by students in the NEET-UG 2024 exam while at the same time ensuring that the identity of the students is masked. The results should be declared in relation to each centre and city separately.”

The bench said it will continue the hearing of pleas alleging paper leak and malpractice in NEET-UG 2024 exams, on July 22.

NEET-UG examination, conducted by NTA, is the pathway for admissions into MBBS, BDS and AYUSH and other related courses in government and private institutions across the country.

The NEET-UG, 2024 was held across 4,750 centres on May 5 and around 24 lakh candidates appeared in it. During the hearing, apex court posed several questions to NTA regarding alleged paper leak and malpractices in NEET exam.

The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducted the exam, has faced severe criticism, leading to several protests and legal actions. (ANI)

Sweets Spots From UP Sugarcane Belt

Two Sweet Spots From Sugarcane Belt

It was a cold December morning of 2019. The non-violent Shaheen Bagh protests in Delhi had just begun, and rapidly spreading across the nation. Mothers and daughters were leading this peaceful sit-in, and it went on for four months, night and day, with thousands joining in solidarity. Farmers from Punjab arrived in solidarity. Poets and artists joined in. Men and women from all communities cooked chapatis in a sanjha chulha (community stove).

Posters of freedom fighters were erected: Sardar Patel, Sarojini Naidu, Ambedkar, Gandhi, Bhagat Singh. A make-shift children’s library was created – aptly called the Fatima Sheikh-Savitribai Phule Library. The place resonated with a pulsating energy of great humanism, and incredible, stoic resilience.

Historian Romilla Thapar arrived, smiling, as vibrant as always. Her presence was a morale booster. Especially for teachers and students. In an essay, ‘Voices of Dissent’ (Seagull Books), she travels through a historical terrain of creative dissent, tracing the cultural  and social rebellion celebrated by the Bhakti movement, among others, in the 15th and 16th centuries. She writes about the Mahatma’s satyagraha, and finds a synthesis with the Shaheen Bagh protests, which rocked the country.

In an academic meet in November, 2019, held at Cambridge University, UK, Romila Thapar backed the concept of dissent and argued that civil society should set up many more dissenting groups.

She said: “Let’s not forget that if there is anything that history teaches us, it is that regimes that are in some way wishing to control society, more and more, do eventually meet up with dissenting groups. And what we are really waiting for at the moment — given the huge spread of Right-wing politics all over the world, and politicians wanting more and more control over society — is dissenting groups to come up, and say, ‘No, we don’t accept this. We will oppose it in a particular way’. It is crucial in today’s world. We have to look for it. All this relates to things like civil disobedience.”

Bhim Army chief, Chandrashekhar Azad was doing precisely that on the winter morning of December, 2018, in Old Delhi, next to the historic Jama Masjid, even while the cops were out looking for him. He wore a blue hoodie. He dodged the cops.

Azad joined thousands of peaceful protesters on the steps of the Jama Masjid, the people shouting slogans, wearing black bands, waving flags. The atmosphere was charged with ‘Jai Bhim’ slogans.

The Delhi Police had said no to a march led by him against the polarising CAA, from Jama Masjid to Jantar Mantar. Azad posted a defiant tweet: “Please ignore the rumours of my arrest. I am reaching Jama Masjid.”

Azad read out, loud and clear, the preamble to the Indian Constitution; people joined in unanimous chorus. This became live on television and social media.

Significantly, Azad has won the Lok Sabha 2024 election from Nagina in Western Uttar Pradesh, with a margin of 1.5 lakh votes, defeating his BJP rival. With a strong population of Jatav Dalits, and the help of Muslims and other communities, he has consolidated a formidable support base in this entire neighbourhood. The farmers in Western UP are already up against the BJP. And, with the Dalits too joining them, the Hindutva forces are on a backfoot.

ALSO READ: Muslim Underrepresentation In Lok Sabha

Besides, in an era marked by the brazen opportunism and sharp decline of Mayawati and the BSP, the rise of Azad marks a turning point in Dalit politics, especially in the Hindi heartland. This is significant because the BSP does not have a single MP in the current Lok Sabha. And Azad is going to be a crucial Dalit voice from UP, where the BJP has got a drubbing of its life.

But, it has not been an easy political journey for this young rebel. Azad is a law graduate. He founded the Bhim Army in 2015, and worked for the social awareness and upliftment of Dalits. He gave the Dalit educated youth the power of self-respect, so that they could be proud of their identity.

In 2017, he was sent to jail. Why? This is because the Dalits of Saharanpur in Western UP, close to Azad’s home, sick of the everyday humiliation, put up boards outside their homes, proclaiming: ‘The Great Chamaar’. The upper caste groups objected violently. They asked them to remove the boards. The Dalits, especially the youth – refused.

Azad was given bail in November, 2017. And, then, imprisoned again under the draconian National Security Act. At that time, this reporter visited Saharanpur and reported on a protest meeting of Dalit youngsters. They seemed fearless.

In his home at Chhutmalpur nearby, his mother was brave and stoic, and equally fearless. She said that she had visited her son in jail who told her, “Don’t cry mother. If you become weak, how can I fight this big battle of self-respect – against the mental shackles of slavery?”

Western UP has marked a turning point in recent times, and political equations have changed in this fertile sugar belt drastically. This is more so because the farmers’ struggle here, as in Punjab and Haryana, has forged a formidable unity among communities which decisively defeated the diabolical designs of the BJP. Besides, the BJP has never been a strong force here. Their support base was restricted to the traders and small businessmen.

In a green revolution belt, where canals flow, strewn with an expanse of yellow mustard flowers, the smell of melting jaggary sweetens the air, and stays inside the taste-buds for a long, long time. People live slow and steady, they are laid-back and sweet, and they love sweets as much. This was always a peaceful place, and brotherhood was a bond much cherished.

Until the arrival of the cruel autumn of 2014. That marked a sinister and sad rupture.

Hindutva forces reportedly ‘engineered’ bloody riots and effectively destroyed the social fabric of this peaceful zone. The fake news of ‘love jihad’ was manufactured. BJP leaders organized ‘Mahapanchayats’, raising inflammatory slogans. Vicious rumours were floated. Fear and violence stalked the land.

Scores were killed. Women were allegedly assaulted. Thousands became internally displaced and homeless, compelled to take shelter in refugee camps. Predictably, the Muslims suffered the most. Western UP, around Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Baraut and Meerut, had never seen anything like this before. This was unprecedented.

That is why, along with Azad, the victory of Iqra Hassan, 27, from Kairana in this area, sends a strong signal. Both Hindus and Muslims voted for her overwhelmingly, as she defeated her BJP opponent in a tough fight, on a Samajwadi Party ticket. Ironically, the biggest rabble-rouser of the BJP, and a key protagonist during the conflict in 2014, Sanjeev Balyan, lost in Muzaffarnagar.

A Masters in International Politics and Law from the SOAS University of London, polite, balanced and measured, Iqra Hassan belongs to an eminent family of Kairana; both her mother and father have been parliamentarians. Besides, the ‘Kairana Gharana’ represents the famous tradition of Hindustani classical music, which inspired the likes of legendary musician, Bhimsen Joshi.

Like Rahul Gandhi, Iqra took up the cause of the Indian Constitution, and asserted again and again, that if the BJP cames to power, it would be under serious threat. She cited the ‘400 paar’ slogan of the BJP, and declared that this was nothing but a diabolical ploy to eliminate the essence and spirit of the Constitution. She struck a chord with the masses.

Among others like them, Iqra and Azad are the young messengers of subaltern hope. Against the politics of injustice, vengeance, mob-lynchings, ED raids, violence and hate, they bring forth refinement, resilience and enlightenment. Truly, they are the new leaders of ‘New India’.
