CrowdStrike

Issue Isolated, Fix Deployed: CEO, CrowdStrike

After various businesses across the world reported IT outages on Friday, which included seeing the “Windows blue screen of death’, CrowdStrike the security firm linked to a software update that caused the outage says that the issue has been isolated and a fix deployed.

George Kurtz, President and CEO of CrowdStrike said the cybersecurity company was working with customers on the issues faced by them while giving a reassurance that the issue was “not a security incident or cyberattack.”

“CrowdStrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts. Mac and Linux hosts are not impacted. This is not a security incident or cyberattack. The issue has been identified, and isolated and a fix has been deployed. We refer customers to the support portal for the latest updates and will continue to provide complete and continuous updates on our website. We further recommend organizations ensure they’re communicating with CrowdStrike representatives through official channels. Our team is fully mobilized to ensure the security and stability of CrowdStrike customers,” Kurtz said.

CrowdStrike told customers early Friday that it was “aware of reports of crashes” of its software on the Microsoft Windows operating systems, according to a company advisory as reported by CNN.

The US media outlet said that CrowdStrike is perhaps best known for investigating the Russian hack of Democratic National Committee computers during the 2016 US election.

In an update, Microsoft said “Our services are still seeing continuous improvements while we continue to take mitigation actions. Multiple services are continuing to see improvements in availability as our mitigation actions progress. More details can be found within the admin centre.”

Meanwhile, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued an advisory, CIAD-2024-0035, addressing the severe outage impacting Microsoft Windows systems.

According to CERT, this disruption is linked to the recent update of the CrowdStrike agent, Falcon Sensor. CERT said that to mitigate these issues, the CrowdStrike team has reverted the changes made in the recent update. However, if hosts are still experiencing crashes and are unable to stay online to receive the necessary Channel File Changes, CERT-In recommends certain steps.

  1. First, boot Windows into Safe Mode or the Windows Recovery Environment.
  2. Next, navigate to the directory C:\Windows\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike and locate the file matching the pattern “C-00000291*.sys”.
  3. Once identified, delete the file. Finally, reboot the host normally. Users are also advised to check for the latest updates and further instructions on the CrowdStrike support portal: CrowdStrike Support Portal. On Friday the outage affected companies across various sectors, from airlines, banks, food chains and brokerage houses, to news organizations, and railway networks. The travel industry was greatly affected causing significant delays in flights across the world. (ANI)

All Indian nationals in Bangladesh are safe and New Delhi is in touch with officials there while closely monitoring the situation, the Ministry of External Affairs said in the wake of ongoing violent protests in the neighbouring country.

The Ministry of External Affairs said it has issued an advisory for the Indian nationals and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is himself monitoring the situation.

“As you are aware, there are protests which are happening in Bangladesh. We have around 8500 students and somewhere around 15,000 Indian nationals resident in the country,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in the weekly press briefing on Friday.

He further said that MEA will keep giving regular updates on the situation. It also urged the family members of Indian nationals there to be in touch with the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh.

“We have issued a travel advisory for people to be in touch with the High Commission and for us to render any assistance that they may need. The External Affairs Minister himself is monitoring the situation. The High Commission will be giving regular updates on the situation there. We will also be giving regular updates and we urge all family members of Indian nationals who reside in Bangladesh to be in touch. “All Indian nationals are safe there…we have a large student community, around 8500 students, many are pursuing medical education. They are safe and sound, they are in touch with the Indian High Commission, to our Assistant High Commissioner as well,” the MEA spokesperson added.

This comes as protests in Bangladesh intensified against the ‘controversial’ quota system in the government jobs. Several protestors have been killed and hundreds injured in the unrest.

The authorities have even imposed restrictions on internet, mobile services and gathering.

Earlier in the day, MEA issued an advisory directing Indian nationals in Bangladesh to avoid local travels amid protests. The advisory stated that the High Commission and Assistant High Commissions will be available on helpline numbers for any assistance required by Indian nationals and also advised them to minimise their movement outside their living premises.

In New Delhi, security was heightened outside the Bangladesh High Commission as a precautionary measure, in anticipation of any protest outside the Commission amid the ongoing anti-quota protests in Bangladesh.

Several police personnel were seen outside the Bangladesh High Commission Office on Friday morning. (ANI)

M3M India Infrastructures Private Ltd ED

ED Attaches Rs 300.11 Cr Worth Of Properties Linked To M3M India In Alleged Money Laundering Case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached immovable properties spanning 88.29 acres and valued at Rs 300.11 crore belonging to M3M India Infrastructures Private Ltd in connection with an alleged money laundering case, the agency said in a release on Friday.

According to the release, the properties attached are in the form of land parcels located in Basharia village in Haryana’s Gurugram.

ED initiated the investigation on the basis of a First Information Report (FIR) registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, based on allegations against Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the then Chief Minister of Haryana, Trilok Chand Gupta, then Director of DTCP, R S Infrastructure Pvt Ltd (RSIPL), and 14 other coloniser companies, the agency said in its release.

The alleged case involves cheating various landowners, the public at large, the state of Haryana, and the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), by getting issued notification under section 4 of the Land Acquisition Act, 1894 (LA Act), and subsequently under section 6 of LA Act for the acquisition of lands of respective landowners, which compelled landowners to sell their land to said coloniser companies at a lower price than the prevailing price before the notification under section 4 of LA Act, the agency said.

The accused allegedly, fraudulently, and dishonestly obtained Letter of Intents (LOIs) and licences on the notified land, causing loss to the respective landowners, the public at large, and the state of Haryana and HUDA, while wrongfully gaining for themselves, the ED said in its release.

ED investigation revealed that RSIPL, a company beneficially owned by Basant Bansal and Roop Bansal, promoters of M3M group, allegedly colluded with the persons mentioned in the FIR and unlawfully got approved licences for land measuring 10.35 acres for establishing a commercial colony, by classifying their case as “a case of extreme hardship” without legal basis.

Upon securing licences to establish a commercial colony, the promoters of RSIPL allegedly did not develop a commercial colony, which was a precondition for obtaining the licences. Later on, they reportedly sold the company’s shares and assets, including the said licenced land for a staggering sum of Rs 726 crore to Lowe Realty Private Limited, an associated entity of Religare Group, the ED said in its release.

This alleged activity of obtaining the licenses illegally has resulted in the generation of Proceeds of Crime (PoC) to the tune of Rs 300.15 crore, which were subsequently allegedly diverted from RSIPL to the promoters of the firm into their bank accounts and to the bank accounts of their family members and subsequently utilized for operational and business expenses of M3M group companies,” the federal financial probe agency added in its release. We Have to Save Our Mountains While They Exist

‘We Have to Save Our Mountains While They Still Exist’

Dr Ashok Kumar Raghav, a former IPS Officer with a PhD on Himalayan ecology, rues the mindless construction taking place in northern hills. His views:

India’s mountainous regions, particularly the Himalayas, are facing unprecedented challenges due to climate change. The combination of rising temperatures, climate-induced heat waves, floods, and forest fires, altered precipitation patterns, have increased the frequency of extreme weather events. Human activities such as road widening and construction, have exacerbated the vulnerability of these regions to landslides and other natural disasters. These extreme weather events pose significant risks to public health, agriculture, infrastructure, and biodiversity.

The primary driver of increased landslides and other environmental issues in mountainous regions is climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has reported that the Himalayas are warming at an accelerated rate compared to the global average.

This warming leads to the melting of glaciers and permafrost, destabilising slopes and increasing the likelihood of landslides. Moreover, altered precipitation patterns result in intense rainfall events, further triggering landslides.

Human activities such as deforestation for agriculture, logging, and urbanization reduce the stability of slopes. Trees and vegetation play a crucial role in holding soil together and absorbing excess water. The removal of this natural cover increases the risk of landslides and soil erosion.

ALSO READ: ‘Char Dham Project Is A Disaster For Uttarakhand Hills’

However, despite all this, the government continues unabated in the construction of roads, tunnels, and other infrastructure in mountainous regions. All such construction activity often involves extensive blasting and excavation, which disrupts slopes stability. Inadequate land management practices, such as improper agricultural techniques and overgrazing, contribute to soil degradation and increase vulnerability to landslides.

The lack of proper drainage systems also leads to water-logging and increased pressure on slopes during heavy rainfall. There is, therefore, a need to implement watershed management practices in rural areas to control runoff and soil erosion.

The government needs to put into place certain remedies that shall reduce vulnerability. They must improve weather forecasting capabilities to provide timely warnings about impending heat waves and disaster preparedness can significantly reduce the loss of life and property during landslides and other natural disasters. This includes installing weather monitoring stations, landslide sensors, and developing community-based disaster management plans.

The use of satellite imagery, drones, and ground-based sensors for early detection of forest fires is very effective. They need to enforce strict zoning laws to prevent construction in flood-prone areas. Restoration and protection of wetlands and natural floodplains is essential, which act as buffers by absorbing excess rainfall.

They can enhance flood forecasting systems and establish real-time monitoring networks. It is also very important to construct and maintain dams, reservoirs, and embankments to control water flow during heavy rains.

To actually put all this into action, there needs to be proper coordination among different government agencies (e.g., meteorological departments, disaster management authorities, forest departments) for a cohesive response to climate risks.

The Indian government plays a pivotal role in addressing the challenges faced by mountainous regions. There are some policy recommendations:

1. Enforce stricter regulations on deforestation, land use changes, and construction activities in vulnerable areas.

2. Ensure that environmental impact assessments are conducted for all major infrastructure projects.

3. Ensure that climate change adaptation is integrated into national and regional development plans.

Only then can we save our mountains and hills while they still exist. Otherwise, we shall leave our future generations with little to live on.

The narrator, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society of London, was conferred with the Green award by the Uttarakhand Citizen Council for his path-breaking research work on the Himalayan Environment. He is contesting a Public Interest Litigation in the Supreme Court with regards to the carrying capacities of ecologically fragile areas in the country

supreme court COVID-19 vaccines side-effects

SC seeks Centre reply on plea challenging NEET- SS exam 2024

The Supreme Court on Friday sought response from the Centre and others on a plea raising allegations of the arbitrary and irrational decision of indefinitely postponing the NEET-SS Examination 2024, taken in a meeting held on February 21.

The petitioner has urged the top court to pass an appropriate direction to conduct the NEET-SS Examination 2024 in July-August, 2024 and an appropriate direction setting aside the decision of Respondent NMC taken in the meeting held on February 21 to postpone the NEET-SS Examination, 2024 and communicated vide letter dated February 23.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India also sought response from the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and National Medical Commission on the plea.

The plea was filed by 13 doctors including Rahul Balwan among others. The petitioner was represented by Rashmi Nandakumar. The Petitioners are doctors, who have completed their education in medicine up to the level of post-graduation, said that they are aggrieved by the arbitrary and irrational decision of indefinitely postponing the NEET-SS Examination 2024, taken in a meeting held on February 21, by the Respondent No. 3, that is, the National Medical

Commission.

“The reason given for the decision is that, due to Covid-19, the MD/MS and DNB courses (NEET-PG courses) for 2021 were held only from January to May 2022. Consequently, the NEET-PG 2021 candidates would not be eligible to appear for the NEET-SS Examination held in 2024,” the petition said.

The decision of Respondent No. 3 is in the teeth of the top court, wherein the top Court has approved the schedule for completion of admission to Super Speciality Courses as placed before it by the Central Government.

According to this schedule, the NEET-SS examination was to be held by the 10th of July of every year and the entire process was to be completed by the 31st of August every year.

“That the arbitrary decision to postpone the NEET-SS Examination, 2024 also violates the legitimate expectation of candidates such as the petitioners who have planned their careers based on the previously established examination schedule. Moreover, Respondent NMC is disrupting the academic year in order to accommodate a single batch of candidates, to the detriment of all other candidates who have completed their PG Courses,” the petition said.

“If the NEET-SS Examination, 2024 is postponed, candidates such as the Petitioners who have completed their PG Courses, who have been preparing for the test by quitting their jobs and not taking new assignments, will lose one entire year. The abrupt decision to postpone the NEET-SS Examination, 2024 without adequate notice or justification is also in violation of the principles of natural justice, and causes undue stress and uncertainty for candidates who have made significant personal and professional sacrifices in preparation for the examination. The Respondent No 3 has completely lost sight of the fact that the candidates appearing for the NEET-SS Examination are qualified doctors who either work in the hospitals or are studying intensively. Moreover, this disruption in NEET-SS Examination 2024 not only affects the doctors and their services but also has a detrimental effect on patient care,” the petition claimed.

The petition further raised that the said decision for postponement of the NEET-SS Examination, 2024 is arbitrary and irrational and will ultimately result in perpetuation of the anomaly caused due to the pandemic.

“That if the NEET-SS Examination, 2024 is postponed to 2025, the result would be that the Respondent No.3 would be required to hold the NEET-SS Examination out of turn every 3 years, to fill up vacancies arising from the out of turn academic session. The impugned postponement disrupts the established admission schedule being followed, which is essential for maintaining a predictable and transparent academic calendar, crucial for both candidates and educational institutions,” said the petition.

The petitioner further submitted that the NMC must rectify the irregularity that has crept into the admission process due to the pandemic, so that going forward the NEET-SS Examination can be conducted without repeatedly causing disruption to the academic calendar. (ANI)

Donald Trump

We Must Now Come Together, Rise Above Past Differences: Trump

Former US President Donald Trump, while concluding his speech on Friday at the Republican National Convention made a plea for unity saying it was time to rise above differences.

“We must now come together, rise above past differences. Any disagreements have to be put aside. America’s future will be bigger, better, bolder, brighter, happier, stronger, freer, greater and more united than ever before,” Trump said.

Trump said that we live in a world of miracles and don’t know God’s plans. Later, his wife, Melania Trump and daughter Ivanka Trump joined him on the stage alongside others.

“Nothing will ever slow us down, no matter what obstacles come. We will strive together to save this country. We will restore the republic and usher in a wonderful tomorrow. In simple terms, we will make America great again, he said.

He added that the world’s greatest invasion was happening in the US- that of illegal migration from South America, Asia, Middle East. He said that there is no hope for America if illegal invasions are not stopped, which Biden’s administration failed.

“I will resolve the illegal immigration crisis by securing our borders. In just under four years, our adversaries transformed our achievements into hardship. Our cities are overrun by illegal immigrants, stealing jobs from Black, Hispanic, and union workers. Inflation has eradicated savings, plunging the middle class into despair. We must not let this persist. We were once a great nation, and we will be great once more. But no hope or dream for America unless we stop illegal invasion in America. We want people to come to our country but they have to come to our country legally,” Trump said.

Criticising Biden’s border policy, Trump pointed to a chart that showed the hike in border detentions under Biden’s rule.

This was the same chart that he put up in his Sunday rally and before the gunshot was fired. “This is the chart that saved my life. I never got to look at it,” he said.

Trump said that under his administration if someone entered the country illegally, they were deported and sent back to their own country.

“We ended all catch and release, human trafficking, shut down asylum fraud,” he added.

Trump also claimed that he would build an Iron Dome in the US and could end wars with a phone call.

Trump promised to end the electric vehicles mandate on his first day in office and also promised a cut on taxes.

“A waitress shared with me that the government is giving her a hard time over her tips. I proposed, ‘What if there was no tax on tips?’ She was thrilled by the idea. It’s evident that individuals like waitresses, caddies, and drivers are adversely affected by taxes on their earnings. Let them retain their earnings,” he said. (ANI)

NIA Arrests Designated Khalistani Terrorist Landa’s Key Aide Baljeet Singh

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a key aide of designated individual Khalistani terrorist Lakhbir Singh Sandhu, alias Landa, in a major terror network case involving the supply of deadly weapons, the agency said on Friday.
