Middle-Class Homemakers Feel Cheated By This Budget

‘Middle-Class Homemakers Feel Cheated, Neglected By This Budget’

Shalini Bana, a housewife living in Noida Extension, says she will not have to run her household on an even tighter budget as the relentless rise in grocery prices go unchecked. Her views:

The recent announcements in the Union Budget has left me, a middle-class housewife in my 40s, with a deep sense of disappointment and frustration. As someone who meticulously manages my family’s finances, I was eagerly awaiting the budget, hoping for some relief or measures that would ease the financial burden we carry daily. However, what I found instead was a series of decisions that seemed to widen the gap between hope and reality for families like mine.

For years, the middle class has borne the brunt of heavy taxation, and this budget is no exception. While the government tom-toms about its focus on infrastructure and other big-ticket projects, there is a glaring absence of tangible benefits for middle-class households. Our income bracket often feels like the forgotten child of the economy—too wealthy for subsidies and too poor to enjoy luxuries without consequence. The tax relief measures, if any, were negligible, failing to account for the ever-increasing cost of living that erodes our purchasing power.

One of the most pressing issues is the relentless rise in grocery prices. As someone who manages household expenses, I see the direct impact of these price hikes every time I step into a supermarket. The cost of daily essentials like fruits, vegetables, and grains has skyrocketed, forcing me to make tough decisions about what goes into our shopping cart. It’s not just the food items; even basic household necessities such as cleaning supplies and personal care products have become more expensive. Despite all the budgeting and planning, I find myself struggling to make ends meet, and this budget offers little to alleviate that burden.

Bana says middle-class incomes do not match with rising inflation

Moreover, the surge in gold prices is another blow to the middle-class family. Traditionally, gold has been a safety net and a reliable form of investment for us. It’s something we have relied on for generations, whether for weddings, cultural ceremonies, or as a hedge against inflation. However, with prices at an all-time high, even the thought of buying gold is daunting. This budget does nothing to address this issue, further alienating middle-class savers like us.

The irony lies in the fact that while the economy is touted as growing, the benefits of this growth are not trickling down to families like mine. Our expenses continue to climb, and our incomes do not match this rate of inflation. Education costs for our children are increasing, healthcare is becoming more expensive, and our savings are dwindling. The promise of better infrastructure or digital advancements holds little weight when the daily realities of making ends meet feel like a never-ending struggle.

The lack of focus on financially relieving the middle class in this budget is disheartening. We need policies that understand and address the challenges faced by families like mine—policies that provide tax relief, control inflation, and make essential goods affordable. We need a budget that prioritizes the needs of the middle class, recognizing our role as the backbone of the economy.

In all this budget has left me with a sense of despair and a feeling of being unheard. As a middle-class home budget maker, I hoped for measures that would offer some respite from our financial challenges. Instead, I am left to navigate the same struggles with an even tighter budget, hoping for a future where our needs and contributions are acknowledged and valued.

Akhilesh Yadav

Yogi Ne Delhi Ko Gaccha Diya Hai: Akhilesh

Reacting to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s “gaccha” remarks, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday hit back and said that CM Yogi ne Delhi ko gaccha diya hai (Yogi has fooled Delhi).

“Maine dhoka nhi diya, unhone Delhi ko dhokha diya hai (I have not fooled anyone, they fooled). Unhone (Yogi) Delhi ko gaccha diya,” the SP chief said.

Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Shivpal Yadav also attacked CM Yogi over his remarks and said that the Samajwadi Party will come to power in 2027 in the state.

“Hamai gaccha nhi mila hai. Mata Prasad is the senior leader. We are the Samajwadi Party. Abhi Lok Sabha elections mai aapko the Samajwadi Party ne aapko ‘gaccha’ diya hai. I am saying it now that the Samajwadi Party will come to power in 2027. I want to tell the Chief Minister that your Deputy CM will cheat you again in 2027,” Shivapal Yadav said.

On UP CM Yogi Adityanath’s “Ek alag vishay hai ki aapne Chacha ko gaccha de hi diya” jibe over the UP LoP post, Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav said that the Uttar Pradesh government should show more interest in its work.

“The Uttar Pradesh government should show more interest in its work. The Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh is facing floods. There is a power crisis, there are power cuts in villages for weeks. The post he is holding, if he focuses on his work and jobs for youth, I think it would be in the interest of Uttar Pradesh and that of the country,” Dimple Yadav said.

Earlier today, while welcoming UP Assembly Leader of Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey, UP Assembly CM Yogi Adityanath congratulated him and attacked the Samajwadi Party.

“I congratulate you for your selection as the LoP… ‘Ek alag vishay hai ki aapne Chacha ko gaccha de hi diya’ (It is a different subject that you have fooled the uncle). ‘Chacha bechara hamesha hi aise maar khata hai. Unki niyati hi aisi hai. (The uncle always gets beaten up like this. Such is his fate). Kyuki bhatija hamesha bhaybheet rehta hai. (because the nephew is always scared),” CM Yogi said.

CM Yogi came down heavily on the Samajwadi Party and held them responsible for crime incidents in the state.

This government is very serious towards women’s safety. As soon as this government was formed, we created Anti-Romeo squads… When we created the Anti-Romeo squads, the first to oppose it was the Samajwadi Party. In most cases of crime against women, people related to the Samajwadi Party are related somehow,” he said.

He also reminded the party of its former chief’s comment who had advocated for boys accused in rape cases not to be hanged.

“They (SP) represent that generation that said ‘ladke hain, galati kar dete hain’… How can they speak on women’s safety, the Samajwadi Party itself is a danger to women’s safety. The government is alert and determined to provide safety to every daughter and trader,” he added. (ANI)

Sudhanshu Trivedi Slams Congress on Halwa Comment

Only One Parivar Ate Halwa, Others Ate Balwa (sand): Sudhanshu Slams Congress

Bharatiya Janata Pary (BJP) MP Sudhanshu Trivedi on Monday launched a scathing attack on Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over his ‘Halwa’ remark and said that during Congress rule, only one family used to eat Halwa (projects) and the rest would eat sand (Ek hi Pariwar Khata Raha Halwa, Baaki Khata Raha Balwa).

Speaking to ANI, the BJP leader slammed the Congress for following the tradition of Britishers even after 50 years of independence.

“People may have forgotten that before Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government came, the budget was presented at 5 pm. During British rule, it was the tradition that the budget would be presented at 5 pm because, according to British time, it was 11:30 am. For 50 years post-independence, their (Congress) government followed this tradition of slavery. After the Narendra Modi-led central government came, the budget was presented on February 1 instead of February 28, because in England, when snow melts in March, no action is taken. Our season is different. The monsoon comes in June, so it was better to allocate the budget to different departments,” he said.

The BJP leader said that Rahul Gandhi must know state Finance Minister Pankaj Chaudhary comes from the same community, adding that the Congress is worried because PM Modi is distributing ‘Halwa’ to everyone equally, which Congress used to eat alone.

“As far as ‘Halwa’ is concerned, being a LoP, he should know that Pankaj Chaudhary, who is the state finance minister, also comes from this community. Then also, I want to say to him that during the Congress rule, only one family used to eat Halwa and the rest would eat sand (Ek hi pariwar khata raha Halwa baaki khata raha Balwa),” Trivedi said.

“But now a Prime Minister has come who has public support from the same Other Backward Caste (OBC) community, and your hate against the same PM shows that you’re worried about the ‘Halwa’ that you used to eat alone and now it has been distributed by PM Modi to everybody, including poor, women, farmers, etc,” he added.

This comes after Rahul Gandhi showed the poster of the traditional Halwa ceremony, held at the Ministry of Finance before the Budget session, and said that 20 officers prepared the Budget of India.

“Budget ka halwa’ is being distributed in this photo. I can’t see one OBC or tribal or a Dalit officer in this. Desh ka halwa bant raha hai aur 73 per cent hai hi nahi. 20 officers prepared the Budget of India…Hindustan ka halwa 20 logon ne baatne ka kaam kiya hai,” he added.

The Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget on July 23 in the Parliament and made major announcements for Bihar and Andhra Pradesh, including a boost in infrastructure and special financial support. (ANI)

No Illegal Coaching Centre Will Be Spared: Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi

Following the tragic deaths of three students at a coaching institute in Old Rajinder Nagar due to severe waterlogging, Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi stated on Monday that she reached the site immediately after receiving the information, assessed the situation, and assured that illegally operating coaching centres would not be spared.

“Three students died after the basement of their coaching institute here was flooded with rainwater on July 27. As soon as I received information about the incident, I immediately reached the spot and assessed the situation. I wrote a letter to the MCD Commissioner and directed that action be taken against all coaching centres in Delhi that are operating illegally or not following MCD norms,” said the Delhi Mayor.

“A sealing drive was launched in Rajinder Nagar by the MCD, during which 13 such coaching centres were seized. Today, another sealing drive took place in Rajinder Nagar, and six coaching institutes were sealed. An encroachment drive also took place. A sealing drive also occurred in Mukherjee Nagar. A Junior Engineer was terminated, and an Assistant Engineer was suspended. No illegal coaching centres will be spared,” she further stated.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) formed a high-level committee to investigate the flooding of the basement of the coaching institute, which led to the deaths of three civil service aspirants in Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar.

The committee will examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify the responsible parties, and recommend measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday after a nearby drain burst, claimed the lives of Shreya Yadav (from Uttar Pradesh), Nivin Dalwin (from Kerala), and Tanya Soni (from Telangana) when the basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar was flooded.

The coaching centre was later sealed by the police.

The three civil services aspirants–two women and one man–died after a basement library at Rau’s IAS Centre was flooded during heavy rain on Saturday night, reportedly causing the failure of the single biometric entry and exit point. (ANI)

India and China Jaishankar

Our Relations With China Are Not Doing Very Well: Jaishankar

Pointing towards the bilateral ties between India and China, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar asserted that New Delhi’s relations with Beijing are “not doing very well,” and underlined how the relationship is not normal.

Speaking to the press in Tokyo, Jaishankar said, “We have views on China based on our experience. Our relations with China are not doing very well, the main reason for that is in 2020, during the COVID, China brought very large forces to the border areas between India and China in violation of agreements that we had with China and that created tensions which led to a clash, people died on both sides.”

Notably, in 2020, the Indian and Chinese troops clashed at Galwan, the same year the pandemic started.

Noting that the issue has not been fully resolved yet between the two nations, the EAM remarked, “The consequences of that continue as the issue has not been fully resolved. The relationship right now with China is not good, not normal.”

“As a neighbour, we hope for a better relationship, but that can only happen if they respect the LOC and respect agreements which they have signed in the past…” he said during the address.

Earlier today, India, Australia, Japan and the US, in their joint statement said they intend to launch a “Quad maritime legal dialogue” under the Quad Maritime Security Working Group to “focus expertise on international law of the sea issues in support of our efforts to uphold the rules-based maritime order in the Indo-Pacific.”

The statement said that they contribute to a region in which all countries and people can exercise free choice on how they cooperate, and trade based on partnership, equality and mutual respect.

The Quad Foreign Ministers Meeting joint statement issued on July 29 said that the countries of the bloc were collectively advancing a positive and practical agenda to support the Indo-Pacific region’s sustainable development, stability, and prosperity, responding to the region’s needs.

Through Quad, the countries are supporting the region through practical cooperation on challenges such as maritime security, critical and emerging technologies, cyber security, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, health security, climate change, counterterrorism, infrastructure and connectivity, and addressing the debt crisis through sustainable, transparent and fair lending and financing practices.

The countries will cooperate with regional partners to address shared challenges in the region, the statement read.

The joint statement also said that the Quad countries reaffirm their conviction that international law, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the maintenance of peace, safety, security and stability in the maritime domain underpin the development and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific.

They pledged adherence to international law, particularly as reflected in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), to address challenges to the global maritime rules-based order, including with respect to maritime claims, and in the South and East China Seas.

The countries affirmed that maritime disputes must be resolved peacefully and in accordance with international law, as reflected in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The countries emphasized the importance of maintaining and upholding freedom of navigation and overflight, other lawful uses of sea, and unimpeded commerce consistent with international law. They also emphasized the universal and unified character of UNCLOS and reaffirmed that UNCLOS sets out the legal framework within which all activities in the oceans and the seas must be carried out.

Since May 2020, when the Chinese troops tried to aggressively change the status quo on LAC in eastern Ladakh, both sides have been deployed in forward positions near Patrolling Point 15, which emerged as a friction point in the wake of the Galwan clash.

Over 50,000 Indian soldiers have been stationed since 2020 at forward posts along the LAC, with advanced weapons to prevent any attempts to change the status quo unilaterally on the LAC. (ANI)

Mamata Banerjee India-Bangladesh on the Teesta River

WB Opposes Any Agreement On Teesta Water: Mamata

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday affirmed that her state will oppose any kind of agreement between India-Bangladesh on the Teesta River, as sharing of Teesta water will mean “depriving north Bengal of water.”

Opposing the Teesta Water Treaty while addressing legislative assembly, Banerjee said, “My government will oppose any agreement between India and Bangladesh over sharing of the Teesta river water, as sharing of Teesta water will mean depriving north Bengal of water.”

She further lashed out at the Centre and stated, “Without consulting West Bengal, they’re doing Teesta Water Treaty. Why they allow 14 Hydro Power Plants on Teesta in Sikkim? I am repeatedly saying that there is not enough water in Teesta River and we can’t supply water to Bangladesh from it. If we will supply water to Bangladesh, then most areas of North Bengal will face water crisis. This is one sided decision.”

Mamata Banerjee on Monday lashed out at the BJP leaders for demanding the incorporation of north Bengal to north-eastern states and said we will never let this happen.

Addressing the State Legislative Assembly, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “They are trying to divide Bengal. We will never accept this. We will protest against this, the people of Bengal will protest against this. I’m elected by the people of Bengal; this is my liability to take care of state.”

Taking it further, she said, “It’s a shame, I condemn the proposal of North Bengal divide. BJP MLAs actually don’t have the guts to face the reality of situation, they always walkout and do politics with state. They are media concerned and nothing else.”

This statement comes after BJP’s West Bengal State President Sukanta Majumdar written a letter to PM Modi demanding the incorporation of north Bengal with north eastern India.

Hitting out at the BJP’s Nishikant Dubey’s statement of declaring Malda and Murshidabad as Union Territory, Banerjee stated, “BJP is trying to defame Bengal. After winning, they are talking about dividing Bengal. Someone is saying to divide north Bengal from the West Bengal while others are saying to make Malda and Murshidabad a Union Territory.”

She further informed that about her proposal of Indo-Bhutan river commission in the NITI Aayog Meeting and demanded for its formation.

“In the NITI Aayog meeting, I proposed the Indo-Bhutan river commission formation issue. I recorded this issue in the meeting, as Bengal suffers from it. There are flood issues. Also, I direct the state government officials to go and meet irrigation department and finance department and solve out the issue. During rainy season, North Bengal faced flood situation. I also proposed to the Speaker, he should send assembly representative to central government to raise this issue.”

Speaking on the budget allocation for floods states like Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Assam, etc, Banerjee asserted, “Salute to the BJP government for this discrimination, Assam and Bihar gets the funds for floods deprivation, but we don’t.”

Earlier, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her Budget speech in Lok Sabha said, “Bihar has frequently suffered from floods, many of them originating outside the country. Plans to build flood control structures in Nepal are yet to progress. Our government, through the Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Program and other sources, will provide financial support for projects with an estimated cost of Rs 11,500 crores such as the Kosi-Mechi intra-state link and 20 other ongoing and new schemes including barrages, river pollution abatement, and irrigation projects.” (ANI)

Men's 10m Air Rifle event. Arjun Babuta Paris Olympics

Paris Olympics: Arjun Babuta Finishes 4th In Men’s 10m Rifle Final

The heartbreak in shooting continued for India after Arjun Babuta came within sniffing distance of an Olympic medal only to let the nerves get the better of him, finishing 4th in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle event.

The emotions were visible on Babuta’s face when he knew that his final shot wasn’t enough to keep him in contention for a spot on the podium.

China’s 19-year-old Sheng Lihao, who spent the majority of the time on the top clinched the gold medal with 252.2 points. Sweden’s Victor Lindgren secured the second spot with 251.4 points, and a visibly emotional Croatia shooter Miran Maricic settled for the third spot with 230.0 points.

Babuta got off to a flying start by shooting 10.7 to kick off his final campaign. He fell to fourth after registering 10.2 in his second shot. His combined total was 20.9 out of 22 possible points.

Babuta went on to firmly maintain the fourth spot after hitting 10.5 in his third shot. Babuta leapfrogged Sweden’s Victor Lingreden by hitting 10.4 in his fourth shot.

China’s Lihao Sheng continued to showcase his remarkable preciseness and lead the charts by scoring 53.4/55 after five shots. However, Babuta slipped to fourth after five shots, scoring 52.4/55.

In the second series, Babuta started to reap rewards for his consistency and moved to the second spot after firing two shots. He continued to fire above 10.5 and put up a score of 84 after eight shots.

At the end of the second series, Babuta slipped to the third spot with a score of 105/110. China’s young shooter, Sheng, continued to lead the pack with his near-flawless accuracy.

The end of the second series marked the beginning of the elimination round. Babuta started the second stage with a 10.6 and moved to the second spot.

The Indian shooter raised hopes of gold after he managed to trail by 0.1 points behind the first-placed China’s Lihao Sheng.

With a shot of 9.9, Babuta’s streak of hitting the ten-point mark ended. He fell one full point behind China’s Sheng.

Sweden’s Victor Lindgren got rewarded for his consistency, and he eventually managed to sneak past Babuta for the silver medal spot.

Babuta retaliated and made up ground with a 10.7 shot which allowed him to retake the second spot. The pressure got to Babuta, and he settled for the fourth spot after shooting a 9.5.

Earlier, Babuta earned a ticket to the final round by finishing seventh in the qualification round on Sunday. The 25-year-old from Chandigarh shot a series of 105.7, 104.9, 105.5, 105.4, 104.0, and 104.6, achieving a total score of 630.1 points to make the cut for the final.

The loss on Monday follows a narrow miss for Babuta in the mixed team event with partner Ramita Jindal on Saturday, where the duo finished sixth in the qualification round, just missing out on a final berth. (ANI)
