Neeraj Promises Modi Home-Made ‘Churma’ Treat After Paris 2024 Olympics

Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with India’s Paris Olympics 2024 contingent on Friday, motivating them to make their country proud.

PM Modi interacted with the contingent at his residence, while some athletes joined via video conferencing, including Olympic medalists PV Sindhu, Lovlina Borgohain and world champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra.

During the meet, PM Modi interacted heavily with the ones who were making their debuts at the multi-sport extravaganza. He motivated them by saying that he will welcome them warmly once they secure a medal. PM Modi also encouraged them to keep the aim of raising the country’s tricolour high in their hearts, no matter what their circumstances are, advising them not to ever blame their circumstances as such things hinder progress.

PM Modi interacted with some debutants like Ramita Jindal (air rifle shooting), Reetika Hooda (wrestling), Antim Panghal (wrestling), Nikhat Zareen (boxing) etc.

Via video conferencing, star athlete Neeraj promised PM Modi that he will bring some home-made “churma” once he returns from the Olympics to meet the PM after a fine showing. To this, PM Modi remarked, “Mujhe aapke maa ke haath ka khaaana hai” (I would like to have churma made by your mother).

Updating on his preparation, Neeraj said, “Training is going fine in Germany. I have been playing less because of injury scares. I am trying to stay injury free. I got a gold at an event (Paavo Nurmi games) at Finland recently.”

Neeraj urged youngsters to be fearless and have belief in themselves in order to get the best results.

“In my debut Olympics, I got the result because I was fearless, had belief in my game and training. One should be confident, not fear foreign athletes,” said Neeraj.

On video conferencing, veteran shuttler Sindhu expressed that she wants to secure a gold medal this time and mark a hat-trick of medal wins.

“This is my third Olympics. I got silver on my debut in 2016, then a bronze in Tokyo. I hope to change the colour of the medal this time. I got experience this time, but Olympics are never easy,” she said.

Advising youngsters, Sindhu urged the players to take the Olympics as any other sports tournament and have belief in themselves.

“For the new players, I would like to wish them luck, there is a lot of pressure and excitement. I just want to say that it is like any other tournament. You got to focus and have belief, give your 100 per cent,” she said.

Nikhat, who is representing the country in 50 kg boxing, said, “This is my debut. I am excited but also very focused because of how much the country expects from me. I want to make my country proud.”

The Paris Olympics 2024 are starting on July 26 and conclude on August 11. India will look to outdo its tally of seven medals from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which included a gold, two silver, and four bronze medals. (ANI)

In a press release, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated, “Prime Minister will be in Moscow on 08-09 July 2024, at the invitation of the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin to hold the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit.”

“The leaders will review the entire range of multifaceted relations between the two countries and exchange views on contemporary regional and global issues of mutual interest,” it added.

After concluding his visit to Russia, PM Modi will travel to Austria from July 9-10. It will be first visit of Indian Prime Minister to Austria in 41 years.

During his visit, he will call on Austria’s President, Alexander Van der Bellen. PM Modi will also hold talks with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer.

PM Modi and Karl Nehammer will also address business leaders from India and Austria. PM Modi will interact with members of the Indian community in Moscow and Vienna.

Earlier in March, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said PM Modi has an open invitation to visit Russia, Russia-based TASS reported.

“This (Modi’s visit to Russia) is yet to be coordinated through diplomatic channels,” Peskov said when asked whether Russian President Vladimir Putin had indeed invited PM Modi to pay a visit to Russia after the elections during their phone call on Wednesday.

Sunak Urges People To Vote For Conservative Party

As polling began in the United Kingdom on Thursday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called on people to vote for the Conservative Party and stop the supermajority of the Labour Party, which he stressed would result in higher taxes for a generation.

Sunak also shared a picture of himself with his wife Akshata Murty from outside a polling station.

Taking to X, Sunak said, “The polls are open. Vote Conservative to stop the Labour supermajority which would mean higher taxes for a generation.”

Polling stations in the United Kingdom opened for voting today at 7 am (local time) in historic snap general elections in the country.

Voters in a total of 650 constituencies across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will cast their votes in the election. A party needs to win at least 326 out of 650 parliamentary seats and the leader of that party becomes the country’s PM.

The status of Britain’s public services, the cost of living, taxes, immigration, and the economy will remain major subjects, around which much of the debate during the campaigns has revolved, according to CNN.

The subject of the UK’s relationship with the European Union, which it left in 2020 following a referendum held four years earlier, has, however, been largely ignored in the discussion. In late May this year, Sunak called for a snap vote, which came as a surprise for many in his party.

It is under the leadership of Keir Starmer, that the opposition Labour party has recovered from its worst defeat since 1935 in the last general election. Since Boris Johnson easily won the most recent general election in 2019, Britain has had three prime ministers from the Conservative party.

However, a large portion of the nation and his party lost interest in Johnson, and in 2022, members of the Conservative party chose Liz Truss to succeed him as prime minister, making her the shortest-serving Prime Minister in British history, CNN reported.

Then, Sunak was chosen by Conservative Members of Parliament (MPs) to succeed her. One of the most well-known champions of Brexit, Nigel Farage, declared throughout the campaign that he would be rejoining the political scene to head the fledgling hard-right Reform UK party.

Predictions reveal that the vote will result in a Labour majority after more than a decade of Conservative rule under five leaders, including current PM Rishi Sunak and David Cameron, now serving as UK’s Foreign Secretary.

However, there is also an intensifying atmosphere of division as the hard-right party Reform, led by populist leader Nigel Farage, appears on track to improve on its performance in the 2019 elections, when it was known as the Brexit Party.

The past 15 years have seen the worst income growth in the UK for generations, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS).In recent years, Britons have also been battling a cost-of-living crisis as prices surge and salaries stagnate. The Conservative and Labour parties have set out differing routes to fix the economy. (ANI)

Hemant Soren CM Jharkhand

Hemant Soren Takes Oath As CM Jharkhand

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) executive president Hemant Soren was sworn-in as the 13th Chief Minister of Jharkhand here on Thursday.

Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan administered the oath of office and secrecy to Soren.

Soren on June 28, was released on bail in a land scam case after spending around five months in jail.

Earlier today, Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan invited Soren to form the government in the state, a day after Champai Soren stepped down from the chief minister’s post.

Champai Soren resigned from the post just five months after taking the oath, setting the ball rolling for Hemant Soren to again take over the role on Wednesday.

Champai Soren took oath as the 12th Chief Minister of Jharkhand in the Raj Bhavan on February 2 this year.

Hemant Soren was released from the Birsa Munda Jail on June 28 after nearly five months following bail from Jharkhand High Court in a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam. He had resigned as Chief Minister before his arrest on January 31.

He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in January on charges related to an alleged land scam and money laundering.

Earlier on December 29, Hemant Soren took oath as Chief Minister of Jharkhand as 11th Chief Minister of Jharkhand.

The event was termed as ‘Sankalp Diwas’ by mark beginning of an era of new Jharkhand.

In 2019, JMM fought the Assembly elections in alliance with the Congress party and Lalu Prasad’s Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) and got a comfortable majority with forty-seven seats in the 81-member house.

JMM won 30 seats, while Congress and RJD secured 16 and one seat respectively in the recently concluded Assembly polls. (ANI)

stampede Hathras

Hathras: 6 Arrested, ₹1L Reward Announced On Main Accused, Says Aligarh IG

Aligarh Inspector General of Police, Shalabh Mathur, said on Thursday that six people have been arrested in a stampede incident at a religious event in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras.

The Aligarh IG also mentioned that Rs 1 lakh reward has been announced on the arrest of the main accused, Prakash Madhukar.

“The death toll stands at 121. All bodies have been identified and the post-mortem procedure completed,” Mathur said.

“When the stampede occurred, the six ‘Sevadars’ who are now arrested had run away from the site. Rs 1 lakh reward is being announced on the arrest of the main accused, Prakash Madhukar. Soon, a non-bailable warrant will be issued against him. We will also investigate if this incident occurred due to a conspiracy,” he added.

He also mentioned that the arrested six accused include four men and two women.

“Rahbari Singh Yadav, Bhupendar Singh Yadav, Megh Singh, Manju Yadav, Mukesh Kumar, and Manju Devi have been arrested. They are all members of the organising committee and worked as ‘Sevadars’. As soon as the information of the incident was received, all the officers of Hathras district not only reached on time but also assisted the injured. Given the programme of these people, organizing things completely, arranging parking, prasad for the people, etc. are the major responsibilities,” he added.

Earlier today, Uttar Pradesh Police conducted a search operation at Ram Kutir Charitable Trust in Mainpuri for ‘Bhole Baba’, a self-styled godman who conducted a ‘satsang’ in Hathras where the stampede took place.

An FIR has been registered on the incident naming organizers of the prayer meeting but ‘Bhole Baba’ has not been named yet.

On Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the spot and ordered a judicial probe into the incident.

A three-member Judicial Inquiry Commission under the chairmanship of Justice (retd) Brijesh Kumar Srivastava has been constituted to ensure comprehensiveness of the subject matter and transparency in the inquiry, according to an official statement.

The Judicial Commission will investigate the various aspects of the Hathras stampede in the next two months and after the investigation, a report will be submitted to the State Government.

The preacher ‘Bhole Baba’ identified as Suraj Pal is also known by the names of Narayan Sakar Hari and Jagat Guru Vishwahari.

As per the prima facie report, the devotees rushed to seek blessings and collect soil from around the preacher’s feet, but were stopped by the security personnel of ‘Bhole Baba’. Later, they started pushing one another due to which several people fell to the ground, leading to chaos at the site. (ANI)

Going Will Be Tough for Modi 3.0

‘The Going Will Be Tough & Challenging for Modi 3.0’

Yash Goyal, a third-year student of law at National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, says he is worried about shrinking job opportunities in the country. His views:

I have fairly low expectations from Modi 3.0 as I believe that it will largely be business-as-usual for the Government. Based on the speeches I have heard and their manifesto, I feel that the Government will largely stick to its previous policies, which I disagree with.

As someone who will be joining the workforce in the coming few years, I am particularly concerned about employment aspects and the economic downturn in recent years. Despite studying at a premier law school that prides itself on, among other things, a stellar employment record, I see my seniors struggling to find jobs, with the unanimous response from employers being – the market is bad. My friends from other sectors have received similar responses generally. There is large-scale anxiety among young persons, especially those who do not have the resources to study abroad, regarding the economy.

This is not limited only to employment, as the wealth gap is slowly worsening as well. While the country reels from a heatwave, the ultra-rich are having pre-wedding celebrations in Italy. There is significant work that needs to be done to ensure that constructive employment is available to people in the rural areas and to the urban poor but the current government seems to not assign much priority to the same. I doubt that much can change without a major shift from its existing policies, but I still hope that some serious work is undertaken on that front.

Furthermore, as a young person who has their political opinions, I fear the shrinking space for dissent in this country. Ever since 2014, political minorities have been on the receiving end of violence, hatred and threats from the majority. This is especially evident in university spaces and the media. Furthermore, the rising hate against queer persons, is concerning.

ALSO READ: ‘Modi 3.0 Must Move Beyond Temple, Vista, Statues’

The instances of violence and open hostility in everything ranging from housing to employment to general social media discourse creates an environment of hostility for anyone who disagrees with the Government or its homogenising identity of Hindutva. I see no reason or signs that the present Government will deviate from this agenda considering the vast support the Hindu right-wing enjoys throughout the country.

However, I also feel that there is hope in Modi 3.0, except not from the Government itself. Given the split mandate which gave a significant boost to the Opposition and third parties at the cost of the BJP, I expect a return to form for the Parliament and its institutions. Over the past ten years, the Parliament had seen high productivity at the cost of low deliberations. Owing to the BJP numbers, the Lok Sabha had been reduced to a rubber stamp while the Opposition had failed to show its presence. Now, with a stronger presence in the Parliament, I hope that the Opposition is able to force debates on issues of importance and use Parliamentary safeguards to ensure that the Government is not able to get away with whatever it wants to push. With the proposed introductions of a Population Control Bill and a nation-wide Uniform Civil Code, the role of the Opposition becomes all the more important and I hope that they do a strong job in ensuring that Indian democracy remains representative and deliberative.

As told to Deepa Gupta
