Worth her Weight in Gold - Vinesh Phogat

Worth Her Weight In Gold

Survival has taught me a lot. Seeing my mother’s hardships, never-give-up attitude, and fighting spirit, is what makes me the way I am. She taught me to fight for what is rightfully mine. When I think about courage, I think about her, and it is this courage that helps me fight every fight, without thinking about the outcome.
– Vinesh Phogat

Vinesh Phogat has become a national phenomenon. An iconic and inspiring role model. A fighter par excellence!

Never before has the country, or its sports world, witnessed such a dignified, spirited and inspiring icon. Every tear she has shed after the Paris Olympics, has been shared as a moment of deep and intimate sorrow by Indians across the spectrum. Especially girls and women.

Vinesh Phogat has now made a permanent place in every heart of every Indian. And it is going to stay that way, for a long, long time.

In an open letter after the Summer Olympics, she has written a text which is replete with humility and resilience, and reflects how humble and strong she has been, even after the tragedy she has faced in Paris. “As a small girl from a small village, I did not know what the Olympics were, or, what these rings meant. As a small girl, I dreamt of things like long hair, flaunting a mobile phone in my hand, and doing all these things that any young girl would normally dream of…

“My father, an ordinary bus driver, would tell me that one day he would see his daughter fly high on a plane, while he would drive on the road below; that only I would turn my father’s dreams into reality. I don’t want to say it, but I think I was his favourite child, because I was the youngest of the three. When he used to tell me about this, I used to laugh at the absurd thought of it, it did not mean much to me…

“My mother, who could have a whole story written on the hardships of her life, only dreamt that all her children would one day live a life better than she did. Being independent, and her kids being up on their own feet, was enough of a dream for her. Her wishes and dreams were much more simple than my father’s…”

Who would have expected such a huge crowd of fans and supporters who thronged the Delhi international airport, and lined the streets, as her open van travelled through a sea of flowers and unbridled admiration! Tears flowing from her face, she was flanked by her comrades, champions, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia.

In her homeland, the villagers, family, friends and relatives gathered to celebrate her glorious return back to her country. As songs played as backdrop, she resolved that her fight is on, and that she is not going to back out.

She struck a heartening and happy note when she said that given the love showered on her by the people of this country, she might return to the mat. After all the bad news which shadowed her grand victory and tragic loss in Paris, this is real good news.

The authentic place for a world champion is in the arena where she excels the most. Nothing less can be accepted.

Yes, she should.

While the entire nation, especially women are shocked and outraged by yet another brutal violation of the body and soul of a young girl, this time a talented woman doctor in Kolkata, the symbol of Vinesh as an icon stands as a moment of respite.

So why was her Silver Medal snatched from her? For a hundred gram weight gain?

There are widespread speculations and uncanny questions which remain unanswered.

When she had specialized in the 53 kg category, why was she arbitrarily shifted to the 50 kg category?

This is why she had to suddenly lose weight to gain entry into that category. “I had no clarity about the 53 kg quota situation, whether there would be trials or not. Usually, the quota is won by the country, but they hadn’t held trials before. The ad-hoc committee said that it wouldn’t be the case this time. I had no option but to do this, because I have to participate in the Olympics,” she said. (The Indian Express).

The confusion and uncertainty, certainly, made a serious impact on her self-confidence. She is a fighter, in the wrestling ring, as much on the streets, where she, along with her comrades, took on the might of a BJP bahubali, backed by the entire establishment, led by the prime minister.

Her Olympic debut began at the 2016 Rio Games in the 48 kg category. The entire world noticed the grit and special skills of this young girl from a humble village home in Haryana. While her struggle with weight continued, she moved to the 53 kg category.

Predictably, she was victorious in the 2019 World Championship, winning the Bronze. Then she went on to win a Bronze Medal in the 53 kg category in the 2022 World Championships.

Nenad Lalovic, head of the United World Wrestling, understood her dilemma. He said that it was not a question of one kg, to reach the 100 gram figure was an extremely difficult task.

While she deserves a well-deserved retreat with her family and friends, the nation must recognize, how she and other wrestling champions were hounded by a ruthless and insensitive establishment. Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, along with Vinesh Phogat, had to wage a protracted struggle for the dignity and honour of their fellow women wrestlers, including a minor, against all odds.

Barring the fanatic Hindutva brigade and their vicious trolls, they were backed by the entire country, especially girls and women. That is why the prime minister’s message to Vinesh did not sound convincing. It was like pouring salt on a simmering wound.

The wound will take a long time to heal. The admiration and love showered on her by the people of this country will certainly help to heal the anger and angst.

We are all waiting for that golden day when she will return to her favourite time and space — the wrestling ring. Undoubtedly, that day will be a celebration for us, and for all those who have followed her grit and determination all over the world.

Vinesh Phogat, you are a winner, all the way! Salute!

Justin Bieber Child

Justin Bieber, Wife Hailey Welcome Their First Child

Pop star Justin Bieber and his model-entrepreneur wife Hailey Bieber have announced the birth of their first child, reported People.

Taking to his Instagram handle, Justin wrote, “WELCOME HOME JACK BLUES BIEBER.” Hailey shared the same photo to her Instagram Stories soon afterwards with the child’s name and a teddy bear and blue heart emoji.

Pattie Mallette, Justin’s mom, tweeted, “CONGRATULATIONS @justinbieber & Hailey. I LOVE YOU FOREVER BABY JACK!!”

The couple first revealed that they were expecting a child in May 2024, announcing the good news on Instagram. A representative for Hailey shared that the model was just over six months pregnant at the time.

Hailey donned a long, lacy white dress and a veil in the vow renewal video. She also provided a couple images of herself and Justin standing in a field. Justin stood behind her, arms around her tummy, displaying their matching wedding bands.

She kept her caption simple, just tagging her husband.

The couple tied the knot in September 2018 in a New York City courthouse just two months after getting engaged. They later celebrated with a larger ceremony in front of family and friends, exchanging vows and Tiffany wedding bands as the sun set in Bluffton, South Carolina.

Hailey earlier addressed rumours about her pregnancy, remarking on if they affected her. “Recently, everybody was like, ‘Oh my God, she’s pregnant,’ and that’s happened to me multiple times before,” she told the outlet.

“There is something that’s disheartening about, damn, I can’t be bloated one time and not be pregnant? It would be a lie if I was like, ‘Oh yeah, I don’t give a s—.'”

“When there comes a day that that is true, you, you as in the internet, will be the last to know,” she candidly added.

Although she has previously addressed bringing her children away of the spotlight, the model stated at the time that she believed it’s “probably totally unavoidable.”

“That was before I was married. Didn’t know who I was going to be married to at the time, I’m sure,” she continued.

Despite her hesitations, the model said that motherhood “is something that I look forward to.” “It’s also such a private, intimate thing. It’s something that’s going to come when it comes.”

“And it’s just, honestly, at the end of the day, so hilarious how much people…care. Let me do what I want with my body and you guys can do what you want to do with your body — and let’s just let it be that,” she said.

Justin also earlier stated that he wanted to start a family with Hailey but shared in December 2020 that he was respecting his wife’s timeline.

“I am going to have as many [babies] as Hailey is wishing to push out. I’d love to have myself a little tribe,” the “Baby” singer said at the time. “But, yeah, it’s her body and whatever she wants to do. … I think she wants to have a few,” reported People. (ANI)

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Modi India

You Have Big Influence, Zelenskyy On Possible India Brokered Ceasefire With Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday express confidence that India had a role to bring peace to the conflict ridden region.

Speaking to ANI, in Kyiv, the Ukranian President said, “India will play its role. I think that India began to recognise that this is not just conflict, this is real war of one man and his name is Putin against whole country whose name is Ukraine. You are a big country. You have a big influence and you can stop Putin and halt his economy, and put him really in his place.”

The Ukranian President was echoing the strong message of peace given by PM Narendra Modi during his bilateral meeting with him at the Mariinskyi Palace.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had told Zelenskyy that dialogue was the only solution to the conflict in Ukraine.

“India was never neutral, we have always been on the side of peace,” PM Modi told Zelenskyy in their bilateral meeting.

The PM further said that India was ready to play an active role in the path to peace and progress.

“People from other countries also know that India has actively planned peace efforts and you also know that our approach has been people-centric. I want to assure you and the entire world that this is India’s commitment and we believe that respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity is of utmost importance to us and we support it. Some time back, when I met President Putin in support of this, I had told him that this was not the time for war. Recently, when I went to Russia for a meeting, I said there too in clear words that the solution to any problem is never found on the battlefield. The solution comes only through talks, dialogue, and diplomacy and we should move ahead in that direction without wasting time. Both sides should sit together and find ways to come out of this crisis… Today I would like to discuss with you specifically the path to peace and progress. I want to assure you that India is ready to play an active role in every effort for peace. If I can personally contribute to this, I would like to do so. As a friend, I can assure you,” PM Modi said to President Zelenskyy.

Earlier the Ukranian President called the visit of PM Modi as a historic event.

“Today, history was made. The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi made his first visit to Ukraine since our country’s independence, on the eve of our Independence Day. Today, we reached an agreement on four documents between Ukraine and India, covering the medical field, agricultural cooperation, humanitarian relations, and culture. Following the visit, we also agreed on a joint statement focusing on the development of a strategic partnership, bilateral trade, and continued military-technical cooperation. India supports Ukraine’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity. And this is critical because everyone in the world must equally respect the UN Charter,” he said in a post on X.

The strong positive message sent out by the Ukranian President signifies the key role India has in pushing for peace and progress in the region. (ANI)

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat congress

Bhupinder Dismisses Speculation Of Vinesh Joining Cong

Reacting to the speculation regarding former Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat joining Congress, Former Haryana CM and LoP Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Friday labelled it as a “hypothetical question” and said that people will get to know if anyone joins the party.

In an interview with ANI, when asked if wrestler Vinesh Phogat will join the Congress, Bhupinder Singh Hooda said, “It is a hypothetical question. But athletes do not belong to one party alone, they are of the entire country. If anyone joins the party, you will get to know. We welcome whoever joins the party but it is a hypothetical question. It depends on her. Today, she has faced injustice. She should be given her due honour. She should be nominated to Rajya Sabha.”

On her Olympics performance, Hooda said, “I had said that she should be given the same honour which is given to a Gold medal winner. She was not given that. The Government announced a Silver medal honour for her. I had said that just like Sachin Tendulkar was nominated to the Rajya Sabha, she should be nominated as well. Injustice has been done to her, she was not given justice.”

Hitting out at the government for Agniveer Scheme, Hooda said that they are messing with the future of the youth and their future is plunged into darkness.

“We had said that if Congress forms government at Centre, we will reinstate the old recruitment process, which was pensionable. An 18-year-old will get recruited and come back as a 22-year-old. He will neither get any pension or facility. This is messing with their future. Haryana and Punjab will suffer the loss as earlier, around 5000 youth joined the armed forces but under this Agniveer scheme, only 250 youth joined. Their future plunged into darkness,” Hooda said.

Lashing out at the state government, Hooda said that Haryana is lagging behind in every aspect whether it is unemployment, sports, per capita income, or investment.

“In 2014, when we went out of power, Haryana was number 1 with respect to per capita income, per capita investment, law and order, employment and sports. But today, we are lagging behind. What is it in which we are leading today? In unemployment. Crime is rising rapidly. Law and order has failed.”

Addressing the wrestlers protest, Hooda hit out at the government and said the daughters who won accolades across the world are still waiting for the justice.

“Our women wrestlers, who have won accolades across the world, had to sit at Jantar Mantar but they have still not received justice. Same case is with employment; they had launched ‘Kaushal Rojgaar Nigam’ which promised temporary jobs and on contractual basis but during our government we gave regular jobs which secured the future of the youths. Today 2 lakh sanctioned posts in Haryana are vacant. Once Congress government comes to power, we will provide 1 lakh permanent jobs in the first year itself and the 50,000 jobs each in the subsequent years,” said Hooda.

Since January 2023, wrestlers including Vinesh, Sakshi and Bajrang Punia are protesting against Brij Bhushan accusing him of sexual exploitation and intimidation.

Earlier on August 22, former Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat on Thursday claimed that Delhi Police has revoked the security cover of female wrestlers set to testify in the sexual harassment case against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

“Delhi Police has withdrawn the security of the women wrestlers who are going to testify against Brij Bhushan in the court. @DelhiPolice @DCWDelhi @NCWIndia,” Phogat said in a post on X.

However, the Delhi police denied the allegation.

“The security provided to the wrestlers hasn’t been withdrawn; it was decided to request Haryana Police to takeover the responsibility in future since the protectees normally reside there,” said DCP New Delhi in a post on X. (ANI)

Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Modi peace

Modi, Zelenskyy Call For Lasting Peace Through Talks

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Ukraine on Friday at the invitation of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

During their discussions, the leaders emphasised the importance of achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace through dialogue and diplomacy.

This visit marks the first ever by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine since diplomatic relations were established between the two countries in 1992.

PM Modi and President Zelenskyy reiterated their commitment to further cooperation in upholding international law, including the UN Charter and principles such as respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of states. They agreed on the desirability of closer bilateral dialogue in this regard, according to a joint statement by the Ministry of External Affairs.

The Indian side reaffirmed its principled stance and focused on peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy. As part of this commitment, India attended the Summit on Peace in Ukraine, held in Burgenstock, Switzerland, in June 2024.

The Ukrainian side welcomed India’s participation and highlighted the importance of high-level Indian involvement in the next Peace Summit. Ukraine suggested that the Joint Communique on a Peace Framework, adopted at the Summit on Peace in Ukraine, could serve as a basis for further efforts to promote a just peace based on dialogue, diplomacy, and international law.

Both leaders expressed mutual interest in elevating bilateral relations from a comprehensive partnership to a strategic partnership in the future. They reaffirmed their commitment to further developing bilateral ties for the benefit of the peoples of both countries, based on mutual trust, respect, and openness. The leaders also appreciated the participation of Ukrainian official delegations in the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024 and the Raisina Dialogue 2024, according to the joint statement.

The leaders commended efforts to ensure global food security, including the Ukrainian humanitarian grain initiative. They emphasised the importance of an uninterrupted and unhindered supply of agricultural products to global markets, particularly in Asia and Africa.

PM Modi reiterated the need for sincere and practical engagement between all stakeholders to develop innovative solutions that will have broad acceptability and contribute to the early restoration of peace. He reaffirmed India’s willingness to contribute in every possible way to facilitate a swift return to peace.

The leaders also discussed enhancing cooperation in areas such as trade and commerce, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, defence, education, science and technology, and culture. They explored the possibility of a stronger partnership in domains such as digital public infrastructure, industry, manufacturing, and green energy, including greater involvement of businesses and industries from both nations.

The leaders emphasised the importance of the Indian-Ukrainian Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical, Industrial and Cultural Cooperation (IGC) in fostering a future-oriented and stronger economic partnership between the two countries.

They appreciated the review of the IGC conducted during the visit of the Ukrainian Minister for Foreign Affairs to India in March 2024 and the efforts to hold the meetings of the Joint Working Groups, with a view to convening the 7th Session of the IGC at a mutually convenient time in 2024. The Ukrainian side welcomed the appointment of India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr S. Jaishankar, as the Co-Chair of the IGC, according to the statement.

In light of the significant reduction in annual bilateral trade in goods since 2022 due to challenges related to the ongoing war, the leaders directed the Co-Chairs of the IGC to explore all possible ways not only to restore bilateral trade and economic relations to pre-conflict levels but also to expand and deepen them further.

The leaders emphasised the importance of enhancing the ease of doing business to facilitate mutual economic activities and investments, while also removing any impediments to greater trade and commerce between India and Ukraine. Both sides encouraged greater engagement at official and business levels to explore joint projects, collaborations, and ventures.

The leaders recalled the strong ties between the two nations in agriculture and expressed a desire to enhance bilateral interaction and market access based on complementary strengths, including the harmonisation of standards and certification procedures.

Recognising cooperation in pharmaceutical products as one of the strongest pillars of the partnership, the leaders reaffirmed their desire for greater market access and the facilitation of investments and joint ventures, including through testing, inspection, and registration procedures. Both sides expressed a desire to broaden cooperation on drugs and pharmaceuticals, including in training and the sharing of best practices. They welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India and the State Service of Ukraine on Medicines and Drugs Control, and the holding of the 3rd Meeting of the Indian-Ukrainian Joint Working Group on Pharmaceutical Cooperation in August 2024, in virtual mode. The Ukrainian side also appreciated India as a reliable source for the supply of cost-effective and quality medicines. (ANI)
