West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar

We Demand Mamata’s Resignation: Sukanta Majumdar

BJP workers led by West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar staged a protest in Kolkata on Wednesday demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the wake of Supreme Court’s observation in the rape and murder case of trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar said that their demand was the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and that the protest would continue till September 5.

Sukanta Majumdar said, “Yesterday’s verdict of the Supreme Court shows that the Court does not have faith in Mamata Banerjee’s West Bengal Govt and that the Commissioner of Police should be removed immediately. Atrocities on women are taking place in the state one after the other under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee. This shows that Mamata Banerjee has no control over the administration, so it is our demand that she should resign. We are going to protest until 5th September.”

State General Secretary WB BJP Locket Chatterjee said that they demanded justice for the victim of the rape and murder.

Locket Chatterjee said, “The entire country and West Bengal is demanding justice and if Mamata Banerjee is not able to provide justice, she should resign. She stood on the streets against her government. We want either justice or CM’s resignation. Supreme Court has clearly shown that it does not have faith in the police. Police should provide all the evidence to CBI but it is doing the opposite. Mamata Banerjee is trying her best so that former Principal Sandip Ghosh is not arrested.”

Doctors from Kolkata held a protest on Wednesday demanding justice in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case. Doctors from Hyderabad also held a protest. In Delhi, doctors held a protest at Jantar Mantar.

Earlier the Supreme Court on Tuesday questioned West Bengal police over various issues, including delay in filing the First Information Report, delay in handing over the body to family and alleged failure to protect women doctors, during a mob attack at RG Kar Medical College. The court has also asked the medical professionals to return to their duties.

A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud also comprising Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra questioned West Bengal police about the delay in lodging FIR in the RG Kar incident.

The Supreme Court, which has taken suo motu cognisance of the rape and murder of a doctor in State-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, raised these queries when it was hearing the matter. The top court has also set up a national task force to consider the issues related to the safety of medical professionals in the country.

The top court said that it is deeply concerned about the safety of doctors across India. “If women cannot go to work and be safe, we are denying them the basic right to equality. We have to do something” the court said.

The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. (ANI)

Bharat Bandh

Bharat Bandh: Nationwide Protest; Patna Police Baton Charge People Protesting Against SC’s Verdict On Reservations

A nationwide strike, known as “Bharat Bandh,” is taking place across the country in response to a recent Supreme Court ruling on SC/ST reservations. The Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti announced the Bharat Bandh as a mark of protest against the SC’s ruling on SC/ST reservations.

The Patna Police baton charged the people protesting in support of a day-long ‘Bharat Bandh’ on Wednesday against the SC’s recent judgement.

An atmosphere similar to lockdown is also being seen in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district. The people from the SC/ST community are monitoring by forming groups to make the shutdown successful. The police administration is also keeping a close watch on the area with full alertness so that no unusual incident takes place. The SC/ST people took out a procession from Kote Gate to the collector’s office.

The impact of the bandh is also being seen in Jharkhand’s capital city, Ranchi. The roads of Harmu Chowk, Kathal Mode, and Chapu Toli Chowk, have been completely blocked. The bandh supporters are protesting by burning tyres on the road.

The police are also on alert in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida where forces have been deployed in large numbers. The Joint Commissioner of Police of Noida, Shiv Hari Meena, said that the Police are conducting foot marches to ensure law and order is not disturbed.

“We are also taking care that the general public does not face any kind of problem. The police team is keeping an eye on the people creating anarchists,” he added.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Jayant Singh Chaudhary said, “The Supreme Court had commented, after which the Law Minister also clarified it in Parliament. The Cabinet has also clarified its opinion, so now there is nothing left.”

The apex court in a landmark ruling on August 1, ruled that states have the power to sub-classify SCs and STs and said that the authority concerned, while deciding if the class is adequately represented, must calculate adequacy based on effective and not quantitative representation.

The Supreme Court ruled by a majority judgement of 6:1, that sub-classification within the SCs and STs reservation is permissible. As many as six separate opinions were delivered in the case.

The judgement was delivered by the seven-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, which overruled earlier judgement in the EV Chinnaiah matter, which had held that sub-classification was not permissible because SC/STs form homogenous classes.

Besides CJI Chandrachud, other judges on the bench were Justices BR Gavai, Vikram Nath, Bela M Trivedi, Pankaj Mithal, Manoj Misra, and Satish Chandra Sharma.

Justice BR Gavai suggested that the state evolve a policy for identifying the creamy layer, even from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to exclude them from the benefit of affirmative action.

Justice Bela M Trivedi, in a dissenting opinion, said that she disagreed with the majority judgement that sub-classification within the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes is permissible. (ANI)

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the reported sexual assault on two minor girl students in Maharashtra’s Badlapur and has called for a detailed report within two weeks from the authorities concerned.

According to an official release from the NHRC, the detailed report is expected to include the reason behind the delay in the registration of an FIR, its status, and the health of the victim girls.

“The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report carried on August 18, 2024, that two minor girl students were allegedly sexually abused by a staff member of a school in Thane,” the commission said.

“Reportedly, the parents have raised questions about why a female staff member was not deputed to clean the girls’ washroom. Allegedly, the registration of the FIR was delayed almost 12 hours after they complained to the police about the matter,” it said.

“The Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raise serious issues of human rights violations. Accordingly, it has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Maharashtra, calling for a detailed report on the matter, including the reason behind the delay in the registration of an FIR, its status, and the health of the victim girls,” it added.

It further said, “The Commission would also like to know whether any counselling has been provided to the victims by the authorities or school management. The report should also mention the steps taken and proposed to ensure that such incidents do not recur. The response from the authorities is expected within two weeks.”

Earlier in the day, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said on Tuesday that the case of sexual abuse of two four-year-old girls at a school in Badlapur would be tried in a fast-track court.

Residents in Badlapur also staged protests against the sexual abuse of two minor girls, which occurred last week.

This Budget Burdens Honest Taxpayers & Small Businessmen

‘This Budget Puts More Burden On Honest Taxpayers, Small Businessmen’

Suresh Singh Chauhan, a businessman from Lucknow, says the taxation structure needs to be given a second thought to help small businessmen. His views:

In this Union Budget, the government has tried to paint a rosy picture to the tax-paying population i.e. the middle and the upper middle class by bringing those under the ₹5 lakh slot along with the ₹3 Lakh slab. This is merely dangling a carrot in front of the already burdened class and, in a way, will further drain its earning. Ideally, if the government wanted to reward the taxpayer, it should not have at all disturbed the lower limit and created more slots between the existing tax slabs.

Such a move would not only have increased the revenue of the government but also encouraged the earning class to honestly pay taxes as they could have had more slab options. For the business class too, the budget provisions are putting an extra burden. For example, in my business of furnishings and modular kitchen, I am now supposed to pay a tax of 30 per cent if my establishment generates a business of ₹30 lakh. In addition to this, I am also liable to file my Income Tax Return on my profits and that too will be attracting taxes because of the Income Tax slab! The government should have given a thought on this double taxation but alas!

Similarly, the government increased the STCG (short-term capital gains tax) and the LTCG (long-term capital gains tax) by 5 per cent at the existing 15 per cent. As far as I remember, the government, while introducing the Security Transaction Tax (STT) claimed that it was introduced to eliminate STCG and LTCG. But surprisingly, both have increased without a genuine reason.

Another aspect that the government missed was the provisions of taxations on imports. Whatever minimum ‘corrections’ that have been made in the imports structure will definitely increase the prices of goods in the furnishing and modular home designing sector by five to six per cent. Our trade is at present covered under the GST and duty and what I would suggest is that the government should have followed a ‘One Country One Tax’ structure that will help India prosper in each and every aspect.

There should have been more incentives and relaxations on in house manufacturing so as to give its own idea of ‘Make In India’ a push. If the government opens up its market and offers more lucrative incentives for manufacturing in India, I can bet that we can easily break the monopoly of China in not more than a decade.

However, there are also a majority of decisions that could well be praised like the credit guarantee scheme for the MSMEs, abolition of the Angle Tax, allocations for affordable housing schemes, rural development for upgradation of rural infrastructure, health care, etc.
