Kolkata Dr.: IMA Team Reaches Victim’s Residence, Dr.’s Continue Protests

After the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, a team of Indian Medical Association (IMA) consisting of 12 members reached the residence of the victim on Wednesday.

The incident that took place on August 9, has sparked widespread outrage and led to protests within and beyond the medical community.

The post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. The family has alleged that the victim was raped and murdered.

In a strong display of support, doctors across the nation continue to protest over the murder and alleged sexual assault of a post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor, demanding justice for the victim.

The protests were held in the cities of Kolkata, Guwahati, Hyderabad and Mumbai on Wednesday. The protestors were holding placards, “Justice needs to be served”, “No duty without security” and “Justice delayed is Justice denied”

President of the Resident Doctors Association, AIIMS, Dr Indra Shekhar Prasad said, “… What happened in Kolkata is not the only incident of its kind. Many such cases are happening daily in the country… Being a doctor is one of the noblest professions, we work in a temple-like atmosphere, and if doctors are not safe, how will the patients feel safe? Till the time we get concrete assurance of a long-term and strict law for the safety and security of doctors, health workers, and hospitals, we will continue with our strike…

Vice-President of the Resident Doctors Association, AIIMS, Dr Suvrankar Datta said, “Our primary demand is to work on the security lapse in the medical infrastructure of the country… What happened in Kolkata can happen to anyone. We demand the Central Government to bring a Central Protection Act on an immediate basis, or either give us a written assurance that a legal provision to ensure the safety of healthcare workers will be brought soon.”

Meanwhile, the West Bengal Police brought Sanjoy Roy, the alleged accused in the rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor, to the Central Government Offices (CGO) Complex in Kolkata on Wednesday.

Following an order from the Calcutta High Court, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the case and dispatched a specialised medical and forensic team from Delhi.

Members of the CBI team from Delhi also arrived at the CGO Complex in Kolkata. According to CBI sources, a special team of medical officers and forensic experts from Delhi has reached the crime scene in Kolkata, where the doctor was allegedly raped.

Meanwhile, the OPD services of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital continue to remain closed on Wednesday as junior doctors while the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) is continuing its nationwide shutdown of OPD services over the incident. (ANI)

The Indian Army on Wednesday offered its deepest condolences to the bereaved family of Captain Deepak Singh who lost his life during an encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on Wednesday.

Condoling his death, White Knight Corps said in a post on X, “All Ranks of WhiteKnightCorps salute the supreme sacrifice of Braveheart Capt Deepak Singh who succumbed to his injuries.”

“White Knight Corps offers deepest condolences and stands firm with the bereaved family in this hour of grief,” they said.

A captain of the Indian Army was killed in action during an encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on Wednesday, officials said.

According to Defence officials, “A Captain of the Indian Army from the 48 Rashtriya Rifles was killed in action during the ongoing Op Assar in Doda district”. The officer was killed while leading a search party during the operation.

The operation that began on Tuesday in the Assar area is still in progress. The search operation was launched by the Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir police after the encounter started.

White Knight Corps said earlier in the day,” Search for the terrorists continues amidst a heavy firefight. One officer has been injured while leading the search party. War-like stores have been recovered as operations continue.

Earlier today, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday convened an important meeting on the “rising” terror-related incidents in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

As per officials, Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane, National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, Director General of Military Operations-Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma and heads of the security-related agencies were present in the meeting. The meeting was held at South Block. The development comes a day ahead of Independence Day on August 15.

Meanwhile, security forces across Jammu and Kashmir have been placed on high alert ahead of Independence Day to ensure public safety.

Earlier on August 10, at least two soldiers and a civilian were killed during a gunfight between the terrorists and the security forces in Anantnag.

The encounter broke out during a joint operation launched by the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF in the general area of Kokernag in Anantnag. Havildar Dipak Kumar Yadav and Lance Naik Praveen Sharma laid down their lives in the line of duty in Anantnag. Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi and all ranks of the Indian Army paid tribute to Havildar Dipak Kumar Yadav and Lance Naik Praveen Sharma, who lost their lives during the encounter.

In recent months, Jammu has seen an increase in terror attacks, including an assault on an army convoy in Kathua and skirmishes in Doda and Udhampur.

In July, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) reported to the Lok Sabha that 28 people, including civilians and security personnel, were killed in 11 terror-related incidents and 24 counter-terror operations up to July 21 this year. (ANI)

Sheikh Hasina Speaks Up: Probe July Killings, Condemn Bangabandhu Vandalism

Deposed Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has demanded that those involved in July “killings and vandalism” be properly investigated and the culprits be identified and punished.

In her first statement since leaving Bangladesh after her apparent resignation, Sheikh Hasina also urged people to observe the National Mourning Day on August 15 with due dignity and solemnity and “pray for the salvation of all souls” by offering floral garlands at Bangabandhu Bhaban.

Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of Sheikh Hasina, released a statement on her behalf on his social media handle X, which also said that Bangladesh has earned a place among the respected developing countries of the world but that “honour has been tarnished”.

“Since last July many fresh lives have been lost due to vandalism, arson and violence in the name of agitation… My condolences to those like me who are living with the pain of losing a loved one. I demand that those involved in these killings and vandalism be properly investigated and the culprits be identified and punished accordingly,” she said.

“I appeal to you to observe the National Mourning Day on August 15 with due dignity and solemnity. Pray for the salvation of all souls by offering floral garlands and praying at Bangabandhu Bhaban,” she added.

Sheikh Hasina expressed her pain over “disrespect” to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

“Despite bearing the pain of losing loved ones, I have been working tirelessly to bring smiles to the faces of the distressed people of Bangladesh…Bangladesh has earned a place among the respected developing countries of the world. But today that honour has been tarnished. The memories that were our solace have been burnt to ashes. The Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has been subjected to utmost disrespect. Under his leadership, we achieved independence, self-respect, and a separate identity as a nation. This is an insult to the blood of the lakhs of martyrs who fought for our freedom. I demand justice from the people of the country,” she said.

She also expressed condolences over the loss of lives in violence in Bangladesh and said people including students, teachers, police officials journalists, cultural workers, leaders, and workers of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations have suffered.

Bangladesh is experiencing a volatile political situation with Sheikh Hasina apparently resigning from the post of Prime Minister on August 5 amid mounting protests. TMC Parliamentarian Saket Gokhale Faces Money Laundering Charges

The Directorate of Enforcement on Tuesday said that a special PMLA court in Ahmedabad has framed criminal charges against Saket Gokhale, a Rajya Sabha MP from Trinamool Congress (TMC), under the anti-money laundering law.

The case against Gokhale is based on an FIR filed by the Gujarat Police, alleging misuse of funds collected through crowd-funding.

Taking to its official handle on X, the Directorate of Enforcement posted, “The Hon’ble Principal District and Sessions Judge, Ahmedabad (Rural) and Designated Special Court (PMLA), Ahmedabad, today August 13, 2024, framed criminal charges against Saket Gokhale, Rajya Sabha MP and National Spokespersons of All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) under the provisions of PMLA, 2002 in prosecution complaint filed by ED.”

“Charges against him for a Scheduled offence in a Police case had also been framed,” the post said.

A special PMLA court in Ahmedabad has framed criminal charges, under the anti-money laundering law, against TMC’s Rajya Sabha MP Saket Gokhale on Tuesday, the Enforcement Directorate said.

ED had earlier last year filed a charge sheet against the 31-year-old MP under the anti-money laundering law.

In December 2022, the Gujarat Police arrested Gokhale from Delhi for allegedly misusing funds collected through crowd-funding.

The ED informed the court that Gokhale had spent large sums of money collected through crowd-funding on “speculative share trading, wining and dining and other personal expenses which appear to be extravagant in nature.” (ANI)

Protest Will Continue Until Culprits Are Punished: Dr’s, Students At RG Kar Medical College

After the Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI probe into the sexual assault and murder of a woman post-graduate trainee, the doctors and medical students at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital said that they support the decision but would continue their protests until the culprits are identified and punished.

Protesting doctors and medical students also conveyed that their protests will be carried on until their demands of installing CCTV cameras, establishing proper security measures, and providing compensation to the victim’s parents are met.

Addressing media persons, Dr Lahari Sarkar, Resident Doctor, on behalf of all protestors, said, “We have just received the update about the case being transferred to the CBI. We welcome this decision with all our support. We support this decision. However, just handing over the case doesn’t mean justice is served, so we will continue the protests until the appropriate culprits are identified and proper punishment is given.”

Further referring to their additional demands, Dr. Sarkar said, “Also, there are more demands that are still to be met, such as the installation of CCTV cameras, establishing proper security measures, and providing compensation to the victim’s parents. We have also proposed the stepdown of the authorities who were responsible at the time of the incident. We are still not happy with the orders that are currently circulated, so we will continue our protests till our demands are fulfilled.”

She further clarified that emergency services at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital will continue; however, OPD services will not function any time soon.

“However, I would like to emphasize that our emergency services are still open, our senior doctors and our authorities are helping with that and running the emergency services, but OPD services are not functional right now,” she said.

Speaking on the duration of protests, Sarkar said, “We will have another general meeting to discuss how long our strikes will continue. Till now, none of our demands have been fulfilled, so there is no question of dissolving our protests at the moment.”

Earlier in the day, the Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI investigation into the sexual assault and murder of a woman post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, on August 9.

The Court has asked the Kolkata Police to hand over all documents to the CBI immediately.

Earlier today, doctors and medical students held a protest at AIIMS Delhi on Tuesday after the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) called for a nationwide shutdown of OPD services from Tuesday in solidarity against the sexual assault and murder of a woman doctor.

Earlier, the Calcutta High Court asked the former principal of RG Kar Medical College Sandip Ghosh to submit a leave application. This comes after Ghosh’s appointment as principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata immediately after his resignation from RG Kar College triggered protests.

Sandip Ghosh resigned from the position of principal at RG Kar Medical College on Monday alleging that he was being defamed on social media platforms following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the hospital premises. (ANI)

Bangladesh: ICG Deploys Aircraft, Hovercraft For Maritime Border Surveillance

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG)’s aircraft and hovercrafts along with other vessels are carrying out surveillance operations along the maritime boundary with Bangladesh to prevent an illegal influx into India amid escalating unrest and the collapse of the government in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is experiencing a volatile political situation, with Sheikh Hasina resigning from the post of Prime Minister on August 5 amid mounting protests. The protests, led mainly by students demanding an end to a quota system for government jobs, evolved into anti-government demonstrations.

In response to the heightened tensions in the neighbouring country, the ICG has strengthened security along the international maritime boundary line to prevent any illegal intrusions into India.

ICG Deputy Director General Anupam Rai said on Monday that security measures have been intensified to address potential threats.

“After the political unrest in Bangladesh, Indian Coast Guard has enhanced its patrolling and surveillance along the international maritime boundary line…To prevent any hostile act and illegal intrusion we have beefed up the security, positioned two to three ships…Sunderban Creek areas are being patrolled by our air cushion vessels and interceptor boats,” Rai told ANI.

He further explained that the Sunderban Creek areas are under close observation, with air cushion vessels and interceptor boats on constant patrol.

The ICG’s coastal surveillance radars at Haldia, Paradeep, and Gopalpur are operating 24/7, continuously scanning India’s close coasts for any signs of illegal activity.

“Till now no illegal activity has been seen but we have very specifically told our ships to board all fishing boats or any vessels that are close to the Indo-Bangladesh International Maritime Border Line (IMBL) or in the creek areas,” he added. (ANI)

Actor Janhvi Kapoor on Tuesday visited the well-known hilltop temple devoted to Lord Venkateswara in Andhra Pradesh Tirupati, to offer prayers on her mother and legendary actress Sridevi’s birth anniversary.

She was accompanied by her rumoured beau Shikhar Pahariya.

This morning Janhvi as has been her annual ritual visited the Lord Balaji temple on Sridevi’s birth anniversary.

She looked simple and elegant dressed in a yellow traditional attire as she arrived for the darshan.

Janhvi paired the saree with a turquoise blouse with golden prints and a yellow border and completed her look with golden earrings, a necklace, and a waist bracelet.

Janhvi also took to her Instagram handle to share some pictures from her visit and penned a short message. She also posted a few throwback pictures of herself with Sridevi.

In the throwback picture, Sridevi is seen wrapping her arms around her daughter’s shoulders.

Janhvi wrote, “Happy birthday Mumma. I love you.”

The Tirupati temple is devoted to Venkateswara, a manifestation of Vishnu who is thought to have come to earth to deliver humanity from the trials and tribulations of the Kal Yuga. As a result, the location has been given the name Kaliyuga Vaikuntha, and the local god is known as Kaliyuga Prathyaksha Daivam.

Meanwhile, Sridevi was born as Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan in 1963. She’s known for her iconic roles in Hindi movies like ‘Chandni’, ‘Lamhe’, ‘Mr India’, ‘Chaalbaaz’, ‘Nagina’, ‘Sadma’ and ‘English Vinglish’, among others. The Padma Shri awardee also made a mark with her extraordinary performances in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada films.

Her last film was ‘Mom’, for which she also received the Best Actress National Award, posthumously.

Bollywood stars Karan Johar and Rani Mukerji on Tuesday met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
