RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata Indian Mediacal Association (IMA)

Kolkata Dr Case: IMA Demands Thorough Investigation, Punishment Of Culprits

Expressing shock beyond words at the brutal murder of a 2nd year PG student of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, Indian Mediacal Association (IMA) has demanded an impartial thorough investigation of the case and punishment of the culprits from the West Bengal government.

IMA has written to Union Minister JP Nadda demanding detailed enquiry into the conditions enabling the crime as well as the steps to improve the safety of doctors especially women in workplace.

IMA had given an ultimatum of two days on the above demands.”We submit to you our demand for safe zone, defined security measures and Central Law on violence as deterrent measures. We hope you would consider our demands favourably in the light of deteriorating ground situation,” IMA letter reads.

Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association President Aviral Mathur also demanded an investigation by the central agency and said that the status quo of the strike will continue tomorrow as well.

The post-graduate trainee doctor was found raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, which has led to widespread outrage and protests.

After meeting Union Minister JP Nadda, Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association President Aviral Mathur said, “The ministry called us today to discuss some points. We were there for more than 2 hours. We discussed our demands with the core team of the Union Minister in multiple sessions. We demand that the investigation of the RG Kar Medical College should be done by a central agency, and the family of the victim should get due compensation. To make sure that such an incident is not repeated, a systematic timeline should be carved out in the Central Healthcare Protection Act… We don’t want just promises… They seemed to agree with some demands and were hesitant towards some. It is the status quo. There is no result. Members of all hospitals are present here. We will have a general body meeting now. The status quo of the strike will continue. We will continue with our elective services halt for tomorrow as well.”

Meanwhile, the police Dog Squad arrived at the RG Kar Medical College in a case related to the sexual assault and murder of a woman post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

On Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital incident, Chairman, RG Kar Hospital, Sudipta Roy said that a section that committed crimes like theft was reprimanded and removed from the hospital.

“A section that committed crimes like theft were reprimanded and removed from the hospital. A group was after Prof. Dr Sandip Ghosh…The incident did not happen in the hostel…We are very sad about whatever happened,” Sudipta Roy said.

Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh said that the West Bengal government is not a democratic government at all.

“Is there any law and order in Kolkata? Women are harassed there. The West Bengal government is not a democratic government at all. The atrocities against women, the way women are being harassed there, is an example in itself and it is unfortunate that the Chief Minister of that state is a woman,” Singh said.

Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar said that the West Bengal government should try and deliver justice as soon as possible.

“It is a heinous crime… The government should try and deliver justice as soon as possible. The attitude of the police is not right… BJP has been demanding a CBI probe. CM Mamata Banerjee also gave consent for it but she is not writing such a letter to the Home Ministry… The doctors who are agitating are also asking for a CBI probe. This should be done as early as possible because due to delay, there can be a risk of tampering with the evidence,” Majumdar said.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that the law and order situation in Bengal, especially the safety of students, is under question.

“A similar incident took place in Jadavpur a few days ago. No matter how strongly we condemn the heinous crime that has happened, it will be less. The Bengal government will have to take action against the culprits. The Bengal government will have to be held accountable for it,” Pradhan said.

BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad questioned West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and said if the CM is serious she should have ordered a CBI probe into the incident.

“Why is a CBI enquiry not conducted into the incident?… What is Mamata Banerjee doing?… If Mamata Banerjee is serious about it, she should order a CBI enquiry,” Prasad asked.

BJP leader Locket Chatterjee said, “…We want there to be justice. The people of Bengal will raise their voices till there is justice. There is a huge conspiracy going on to hide someone. They are saying that there should be an execution or an encounter. But this is not about one person, nothing will happen by making one person the scapegoat. A lot of such incidents happened during the CPIM rule… The police declared it as a suicide without an inquiry. The post-mortem and everything happened in haste… There should be a proper investigation… This is above politics… We request the CM to hand this over to the CBI. The Kolkata Police and the CID cannot do anything… We want the truth to come out. Nothing will happen by punishing one person and making them the scapegoat…”

Earlier, the Kolkata Police summoned the Head of the Chest Department of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, for questioning in connection with the rape and murder of a PG trainee woman doctor in Kolkata, sources said.

Mamata Banerjee said that she had asked the police to arrest the accused as soon as possible adding that if the police are unable to solve it, then the case will be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

“The day I got to know about the incident from the Kolkata Police Commissioner, I told him that it is a sad incident and immediate action should be taken and a fast-track court should also be set up immediately…There were nurses and security, but I am still unable to understand how this incident took place. Police have informed me that there was someone inside (Hospital). The Principal of RG Kar Hospital has resigned today…Police, Dog Squad, Forensic department and other teams are on the job. Investigation has been started to arrest the accused and police are trying to arrest him as early as possible. If the Police are unable to solve this case by Sunday, then we will not keep this case in our hands, we will hand it over to CBI,” she said.

Doctors, teachers and students in several hospitals across multiple Indian states went on an indefinite strike.

Junior doctors organised a candle march against the sexual assault and murder of a woman post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Resident doctors of the JJ Hospital also carried out a candle march.

Doctors of the Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital took out a candle march to protest and medical students took out a candle march.

Madhya Pradesh: Doctors of the Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital took out a candle march to protest against the sexual assault and murder of a woman post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, on August 9.

violence against Hindus in Bangladesh

Authors, Academics Write Open Letter On Violence Against Hindus In Bangladesh

A leading group of authors, academics, and eminent members of civil society have written an open letter voicing their profound concern about the violence against Hindus in Bangladesh and urged the Indian parliament to pass a unanimous resolution condemning “this wave of communal violence”.

The signatories, who include authors Amish Tripathi, Ashwin Sanghi, Abhishek Banerjee, Rajeev Mantri, Smita Barooah and SC Advocate J Sai Deepak, said that they are deeply concerned about reports of escalating violence against the Hindu Community in Bangladesh.

“In recent days we have observed deeply troubling events, including the burning of an ISKCON centre in Meherpur, the vandalism of multiple Hindu temples across the country, and the dissemination of videos showing rioters celebrating the lynching of Hindus. Tragically, these acts of violence are neither isolated nor are they without precedent,” the letter said

“The Hindu population in Bangladesh has historically endured repeated waves of persecution, which often intensify during periods of political instability. Since 1971, when 2.5 million Hindus were murdered by the Pakistani regime before the formation of Bangladesh, there has been an ongoing and systematic pogrom against Hindus. Reports indicate that there have been over 3,600 attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh since 2013,” it added.

The letter said the current developments in Bangladesh have further destabilized the situation, “resulting in increased attacks on minority”.

It called on the people to bring the matter to the attention of their elected representatives.

“We respectfully request your immediate intervention to bring this matter to the attention of your elected representatives, urging them to address this issue at the highest levels of government,” the letter said.

“We, the undersigned, urge the Indian Parliament to pass a unanimous resolution recognizing the ongoing violence against Hindus in Bangladesh and condemning this wave of communal violence. Collaborate with international bodies, such as the United Nations, to press the Bangladeshi authorities to take concrete steps to protect their Hindu minority and hold the perpetrators accountable. Advocate for the provision of humanitarian assistance and asylum options for Hindus fleeing persecution in Bangladesh” it added.

Bangladesh is facing a fluid political situation after Sheikh Hasina tendered her resignation from the position of Prime Minister on August 5 in the wake of mounting protests. An interim government, headed by Professor Mohd. Younus, has since taken charge in Dhaka.

The letter said it is imperative that immediate action is taken to prevent further atrocities and to uphold the fundamental human rights of the Hindu community in Bangladesh.

Earlier on Sunday as per reports large groups of the Hindu community in Bangladesh had staged protests in certain cities demanding safety for their lives and places of worship. Hindu groups also staged protests against violence against their community members in Bangladesh in cities like London and Toronto.

On August 8, while conveying his best wishes to Prof Muhammad Yunus, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also called for the “safety and protection” of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh.

“My best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus on the assumption of his new responsibilities. We hope for an early return to normalcy, ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities. India remains committed to working with Bangladesh to fulfil the shared aspirations of both our peoples for peace, security and development,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

Hindus make up about 8 per cent of Bangladesh’s 170 million population and thousands of Bangladeshi Hindus have been trying to flee to neighbouring India to escape the violence. (ANI)

Ravi Shankar Prasad

Baseless Attack, Cong Allies Conspired For Economic Anarchy: BJP On Hindenburg

BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad slammed the opposition’s attack on the US-based short seller Hindenburg report and its allegations against market regulator SEBI chairperson Madhabi Buch and said that the Congress party and its allies have conspired together to usher in economic anarchy and instability in India.

“After being rebuffed by the people of India, the Congress party, its allies and the toolkit gang have conspired together to usher in economic anarchy and instability in India. Hindenburg report is released on Saturday, there is uproar on Sunday so the capital market is destabilized on Monday. India is a safe, stable and promising market in the shares as well. It is SEBI’s legal responsibility to ensure that the market runs smoothly,” the BJP leader said while addressing a press conference in the national capital.

“When SEBI issued a notice against Hindenburg, after completing its entire inquiry in July, which was done under the supervision of the Supreme Court, then without giving any answer in favour of its defence, they have made this attack, a baseless attack,” he said.

Hitting out at the opposition, the BJP leader said that they are continuously trying to destroy the image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“We thought that the opposition would maintain peace but they are not. They are continuously trying to destroy PM Modi’s image. The Congress party and their ally party are doing this. Now on Hidenburg’s report, they are spreading false in the society,” he said.

Earlier, LoP Rahul Gandhi, alleged on Sunday that there was a significant risk in the Indian stock market after the “integrity” of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) was “gravely compromised” by the allegations against its chairperson.

The Congress leader also asked, “If investors lose their hard-earned money, who will be held accountable–PM Modi, the SEBI Chairperson, or Gautam Adani?”

This comes after Hindenburg alleged that market regulator SEBI chairperson Madhabi Buch and her husband had stakes in obscure offshore funds used in the alleged Adani money siphoning scandal.

Meanwhile, SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Buch and her husbands through a press release rejected the allegations of Hindenburg as baseless and malicious and said this was done for their “character assassination.”

On August 10, Hindenburg published a report alleging, “We had previously noted Adani’s total confidence in continuing to operate without the risk of serious regulatory intervention, suggesting that this may be explained through Adani’s relationship with SEBI Chairperson, Madhabi Buch.”

“What we hadn’t realized: the current SEBI Chairperson and her husband, Dhaval Buch, had hidden stakes in the exact same obscure offshore Bermuda and Mauritius funds, found in the same complex nested structure, used by Vinod Adani,” the report by the US hedge firm alleged.

Earlier in January 2023, Hindenburg published a report accusing the Adani Group of financial irregularities, leading to a significant drop in the group’s stock prices. Adani had rubbished these claims as baseless.

The Supreme Court has given a clean chit to the Adani group. In January 2024, the apex court refused to transfer the probe into the allegations made by Hindenburg of stock price manipulation by the Adani group to an SIT and directed market regulator SEBI to complete its probe into two pending cases within three months.

In June this year, the Supreme Court also dismissed a plea seeking to review its earlier verdict in the Adani-Hindenburg case. (ANI)

CBI rape-murder case of a junior doctor Mamata

Case To Go To CBI If Police Can’t Solve It By Sunday: Mamata On Rape-Murder of Dr.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that if the Kolkata police are unable to solve the rape-murder case of a junior doctor by Sunday, she would hand over the case to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

If the Police are unable to solve this case by Sunday, then we will not keep this case in our hands, we will hand it over to CBI,” the Bengal CM said.

CM Mamata Banerjee’s comments on the case come after the doctors launched an indefinite nationwide protest to ensure their demands are met and justice is served.

Handing the case over to the CBI is one of the foremost demands of the doctors. The other demands include a fast-track court and the formation of a committee for the implementation of the Central Protection Act in all hospitals.

Earlier Kolkata police said it would enhance security measures outside the hospitals to prevent any such incidents.

DCP North, Abhishek Gupta said, “The names of the people entering the hospital will now be noted down in a register. No unwanted person should enter to create problems. Doctors have demanded to increase the security around the hospital. The guards have been given identity cards which they will always wear on duty. This is just a step to increase security…”

The rape and murder case of the junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata has led to mass outrage and protests. Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) has launched a nationwide strike as they gathered outside various hospitals across the country, demanding justice for the trainee doctor.

The doctors gathered outside the Lok Nayak Hospital, Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi and several hospitals across the country and hurled slogans, demanding justice for the victim.

Speaking with ANI, Joint Secretary of Resident Doctor’s Association Safdarjung Hospital, Dr Nitin Panwar said, “The recent incident of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital is the reason for this protest…We haven’t got any transparent proof of investigation in the matter. Moreover, the government and administration are giving different versions of the story. They also tried to push it towards the matter of suicide. Now, they are making some other story…Today, we have conducted a meeting with the Health Secretary. We have put forward our demands…We will first discuss with all the RDAs and then make our decision.”

Meanwhile, Sandip Gosh has resigned from his post as the principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital amid the nationwide strike. Speaking to reporters after stepping down from his position, Dr Ghosh claimed that he was being defamed on social media over the incident and said that the deceased doctor was “like his daughter.” (ANI)

CBI Arrests In Kolkata Doctor Death CAse

Getting Defamed, Deceased Doc Was Like My Child: RG Kar Medical College Principal Resigns

Sandip Gosh resigned from his post as the principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Monday amid the nationwide strike by the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) in connection with the rape and murder of a trainee-doctor.

Speaking to reporters after stepping down from his position, Dr Ghosh claimed that he was being defamed on social media over the incident and said that the deceased doctor was “like his daughter.”

“I am getting defamed on social media. It is not good. The deceased doctor was like my daughter. As a parent, I resign. I don’t like that this should happen to anyone in future,” Dr Ghosh said while speaking to reporters in Kolkata.

FORDA has announced a nationwide strike demanding justice and an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the death of the trainee doctor.

Doctors held demonstrations outside hospitals across the country, including Lok Nayak Hospital and Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi, on Monday.

FORDA general secretary Sarvesh Pandey said that the protests will continue till their demands are fulfilled and added that around 3 lakh doctors across the county have joined the protest.

The doctors are demanding a CBI inquiry into the case, a fast-track court and the formation of a committee for the implementation of the Central Protection Act in all hospitals.

FORDA India president Dr Aviral Mathur urged everyone to condemn the incident and said that emergency services will operate for the convenience of patients.

“Everyone should condemn this incident. We will call off the strike when our demands are addressed, as we don’t want the patients to suffer. Emergency services are going on for the convenience of patients. Our organisation is constantly in touch with the ministry. We have full faith that our demands will be fulfilled,” Dr Mathur said.

Given the proposed indefinite strike by FORDA, Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi issued an order directing all HoDs to submit an action plan for their respective departments so that patient care services are minimally disrupted.

A post-graduate trainee doctor was found raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. The death has led to widespread outrage and protests by doctors.

Kolkata police have summoned three junior doctors and one house staff member who were on duty on the night of the incident. (ANI)
