Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhanka

After Uproar In RS Over Vinesh Disqualification, Dhankar Calls Floor Leaders Meet

Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankar on Thursday convened a meeting of the floor leaders in both Houses of the Parliament on Thursday. This was after the Chairman was forced to leave the upper house amidst a continuous uproar from the opposition benches who were raising the Vinesh Phogat disqualification.

Dhankar said that the “scene” created in the House was “unprecedented, indigestible”. “It is our bounden duty to take tough decisions. Sublimity has been misunderstood as fragility, persuasion has been misunderstood as weakness,” he added.

Earlier, Dhankar stopped presiding over the house for a brief while on Thursday and left the House saying that he did not “get the support he should have received.” This came after the members of the opposition walked out after their demand to discuss the disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat from the Paris Olympics 2024 was not taken up for discussion in the House.

“Making this sacred House a centre of anarchy, attacking Indian democracy, tarnishing the dignity of the post of the Speaker, this is not just indecent conduct, this is conduct that crosses all limits… What I have been seeing in recent days and the way the challenge is being given through words, letters, through newspapers, how many wrong comments have been made. This challenge is not being given to me but this challenge is being given to the post of the Chairman. And this challenge is being given because they (opposition) think that the person sitting on this post is not worthy of it…” Dhankar said.

Dhankar expressed anguish at opposition members showing “disrespect” to the Chair. “For some time…unable to sit, (leaving) with heavy heart,” he said. On his leaving the House, the Chairman said that he was not “running away” from his oath.

“You set aflame democratic traditions…insult to the chair,” the Rajya Sabha chairman said referring to the protests in the House.

INDIA Bloc MPs staged a protest at Parliament on Wednesday also seeking justice for wrestler Vinesh Phogat following her disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024 hours before the final. Congress Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Surjewala also raised questions on the ‘silence’ of the government.

“The whole country is hopeful that she will rise again and fight. But why is the Government of India silent?” Congress MP Surjewala said.

MP Randeep Surjewala further urged the Indian Olympic Association should talk to the International Olympic Association talk to the International Olympic Association.

“The previous day when she won three matches, her weight was less than 50 kg. So if the weight is more on the next day then how can it affect the previous day’s win? Indian Olympic Association should talk to the International Olympic Association,” MP Surjewala said.

Surjewala further added, “Not only to Vinesh, this medal belongs to the whole country and BJP needs to understand that.” (ANI)

Sheikh Hasina Speaks UP

Hasina’s Entourage Members Start Leaving From India

Members of the Sheikh Hasina entourage, who reached India with her on Monday, have now started departing from India for their next destinations.

Along with the two sisters, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, a significant number of associates had also come to India on August 5.

Most of the members of the entourage have now started leaving India for their next destinations, sources told ANI.

Sheikh Hasina and her sister, along with other associates had to flee Bangladesh in a hurry to save their lives.

All the team members in her entourage came to India in a hurry, as many of them could not even carry clothing or any other daily-use items with them. The Indian protocol officials deployed with the entourage helped the members of Hasina’s team to buy clothes and other items, they said.

The team members were in a state of shock due to the experience and scenes witnessed by them back home in the last few days, the sources said.

The number of associates of the two sisters from the most reputed political family of Bangladesh are in double digits and they arrived in India along with her, the sources said.

Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval was constantly in touch with the officials and met Hasina as soon as she landed in Delhi. The team was provided immediate help and taken to safe houses in Delhi, they said.

Bangladesh is facing a fluid political situation with Sheikh Hasina, 5, tendering her resignation from her post on August 5 in the wake of mounting protests.

The protests, led majorly by students demanding an end to a quota system for government jobs, took the shape of anti-government protests.

Members of the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus will take the oath tonight. Bangladesh Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman said on Wednesday that the oath-taking ceremony is likely to be held at 8:00 pm (local time) in the presence of some 400 dignitaries, The Daily Star reported.

Waker-Uz-Zaman indicated that the interim government might comprise 15 members. However, he did not mention their names and possible tenure of the government.

General Waker-Uz-Zaman expressed hope that normalcy would return within three to four days as the situation in Bangladesh is improving significantly. He said that those involved in the crimes committed over the past few days will not be spared and legal action will be taken against them. (ANI)

Waqf (Amendment) Bill Kiren Rijiju

Rijiju Defends Waqf (Amendment) Bill, Says No Interference In Freedom Of Any Religious Body

Amid the opposition’s all-out attack on the Centre after the Waqf (Amendment) Bill was introduced in Lok Sabha on Thursday, Union Minister of Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju defended the bill in the House and said that there is no “interference in the freedom of any religious body”.

“With this bill, there is no interference in the freedom of any religious body. Forget about taking anyone’s rights, this bill has been brought to give rights to those who never got them. This bill being brought today is based on the report of Sachar committee (which called for reform) which you made (Congress),” Kiren Rijiju said as he moved the bill for consideration in the lower house.

“Stop opposing this bill, this will go down in history, whoever has opposed it and whoever has supported it. So before opposing the bill, think about thousands of poor people, women, and children and respect them,” Rijiju added.

The bill seeks to “effectively address issues” related to the powers of the State Waqf Boards, registration and survey of waqf properties and removal of encroachments. Apart from introducing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, Kiren Rijiju also introduced the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2024 which seeks to repeal the Mussalman Wakf Act, 1923.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, Waqf Act provides for the renaming of the Waqf Act, 1995, as the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995. It seeks to clearly define “waqf” as waqf by any person practising Islam for at least five years and having ownership of such property and ensure that the creation of Waqf-alal-aulad does not lead to the denial of inheritance rights to women.

The bill seeks to omit section 40 relating to the powers of the Board to decide if a property is waqf property, provide for filing of accounts of waqf by mutawallis to the Board through a central portal for better control over their activities, reform the Tribunal structure with two members and provide for appeals against the orders of the Tribunal to the High Court within a specified period of ninety days.

The members of the opposition parties made an all-out attack on the Centre as Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju moved the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 in Lok Sabha.

NCP (SCP) MP Supriya Sule urged the government to either withdraw the bill completely or send it to a standing committee. “Please do not push agendas without consultations,” Supriya Sule said in Lok Sabha. Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) MP NK Premachandran in Lok Sabha said that if this law is put through judicial scrutiny then it will be “struck down.”

Opposing the bill, Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav said, “Yeh bill jo introduce ho raha hai woh bahut sochi samjhi rajneeti ke tehat ho raha hai. Speaker sir, I heard in the lobby that some of your rights are also going to be taken away and we will have to fight for you. I oppose this bill.”

Congress MP KC Venugopal opposed the bill in the House and dubbed it an “attack on the federal system.” AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi claimed that the bill violates the principles of Articles 14, 15 and 25 of the Constitution. (ANI)

Look Ma They Stole My Medal!

Look Ma, They Stole My Medal!

Ma, wrestling has won, I have lost. Please forgive me, your dreams and my courage, everything is broken.  I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye wrestling, 2001-2024. I shall be indebted to you all. Forgive me…
Vinesh Phogat, in a message to her mother, Premlata

Tragic. Heart-breaking. An entire nation wept silent tears. In every heart, there was only one name – Vinesh Phogat.

Wednesday morning arrived with the terrible news of her disqualification. Our hearts sank into disbelief. Speechless, we prayed the news was untrue.

First, she defeated the formidable Yusneylis Guzman Lopez of Cuba in the last four stage bout. Arms raised, she thanked God. The stadium rose to give her a standing ovation.

Then she did the impossible. She became victorious over the Tokyo Olympics Gold Medal winner, Yui Susaki of Japan.

Vinesh Phogat was in the final of the Summer Olympic Games of Paris. At last!

India celebrated, in whole-hearted praise, for her incredible daughter, like never before.

Then, on Wednesday, the entire nation mourned. Except the handful of ‘traitors’ – gaddars! The vicious, shameless trolls, who did what they do best.

The prime minister apparently did not send a message of congratulations to her after her great and glorious victory. Is it correct? Why?

His laudatory words of praise came reportedly only after her disqualification. He called her a “champion of champions”. “Come back stronger! We are all rooting for her,” he said.

Instead, Vinesh, just about 29, has quit the sport which is her body and soul. Her goodbye, soaked in saline waters, will find a sublime synthesis now with the rain-soaked mud of her childhood homeland in Haryana. The sweet fragrance of the earth, moments after the rain, still lingering in the humid atmosphere, too, will be soaked with her heart-breaking sacrifice.

Of all the medals she has won, this was the most precious of all. And the gold was also within reach! In her long career of 25 years – this was truly her Silver Jubilee of sacrifice!

And yet, as a nation, let us not forget, never ever, how she and Sakshi Malik, another world champion wrestler, went to immerse all their lifetime medals in Ganga at Har ki Pauri in Haridwar. They almost did it, but a farmer leader from Western UP rushed to the ghat and stopped them.

Did the PM try to stop them? Of course not.

Then she and another great wrestler, fighter, and her comrade in arms, Bajrang Punia, threw their medals on the dusty streets of Lutyens Delhi, so close to South Block, the centre of power in India. Did the PM utter a word to tell them – please, don’t do this.

A BJP bahubali, backed by the PM, yet again managed to wrest control over the male-dominated Wrestling Federation of India, defeating another woman wrestling champion, who dared to take them on. In protest, Sakshi Malik quit, tears flowing down her face, at the Press Club of India in Delhi. She placed her blue shoes on top of the table – as her final farewell to her most favourite sport.

The PM, of course, kept mum.

Champion of champions?

She cut her hair as the last resort. She was dehydrated, surviving on little drops of water. She stopped eating. She cycled and jogged. She did her best. And, yet, they disqualified her for gaining 100 grams of weight.

“Why was she not given a couple of hours’ grace period which is allowed to players in such situations? What was the Wrestling Federation of India doing? What was the Indian Olympic Association doing? What were the sports officials doing? What was the sports minister doing? These questions will be asked,” said Congress MP Randeep Surjewala, from her home state.

So why was the Olympic Games rule that allows a wrestler to plead injury, given the circumstances, not applied, so that the silver medal could still belong to her, and the nation?

And let us also not forget, never ever, their long and protracted struggle for justice on the streets of the power capital of India. It took them six months to get an FIR registered! In the early period of their peaceful struggle at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, they were reportedly denied access to food or toilets. Even their family members were not allowed to visit them.

Were our world champion women wrestlers criminals? Do they deserve to be treated like this?

Then they were trolled, castigated, hounded. They were beaten up, dragged brutally, arrested by the Delhi Police, even while the PM, like a monarch, symbol in hand, performed religious rituals in the secular and sacred space of the Parliament of a secular democracy.

How can the nation forget how disgracefully they were treated, and it went on and on!

We have to learn many lessons from the brave daughters of our land. They refused to succumb in all circumstances. They became the scaffolding of a historic movement — the first in the history of sports in India. They turned into inspirational role models and iconic celebrities, for an entire generation of girls and women of India. And, for all the future generations to come.

With their non-violent struggle, and incredible record in the sport, they stand among the all-time greats who stood up against all forms of injustice and cruelty – against racism for instance. They are now the proud inheritors of the ‘take the knee’ and the Black Lives movement.

In their victories and resistance, Vinesh and Sakshi remind us of the great boxer, Mohammad Ali, who refused to go to war against the guerilla fighters of Vietnam, and who defied the racists of the nasty, white, supremacist establishment of America.

In an open letter in the summer of 2023, Sakshi Malik wrote: “You all saw what happened on May 28. How the Delhi Police behaved with us and brutally arrested us. We were conducting a peaceful protest movement. The police ransacked our place and took it from us. The next day the police lodged FIRs against us. Have women wrestlers committed a crime by asking justice for all the sexual harassment meted out to them? The police and the system are treating us like criminals, while the harasser verbally attacks us in public meetings. Now, we ask, why did we win those medals (for India)? Did we win those medals so that the system can treat us like this — drag us, malign us, and term us criminals?”

In her tragedy, Vinesh Phogat has become a sports icon unsurpassed in the history of sports in India. We pray that she regains her courage and resilience in the days to come. Undoubtedly, for her, as for Sakshi Malik, there are still miles to go, though the woods are still dark and deep.

Actor Parineeti Chopra, currently in London, has been managing a long-distance marriage with her politician-hubby, Raghav Chadha in a cute way.

On Wednesday, Parineeti took to Instagram and shared a video of herself watching Raghav’s Parliament speech live.

“From binge watching shows to watching his parliament speeches on Sansad tv – who knew? The only way to see him LIVE – from miles away! #LongDistance,” she captioned the post.

Parineeti’s post left fans in awe.

Reacting to the clip, a social media user commented, “Awwww…lovely.”

“Omggggggggg how cute,” another user wrote.

Last week, Parineeti gave a shout out to Raghav, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP, for flagging the issue of film piracy in the Parliament.

During his speech in the Rajya Sabha, Raghav noted that piracy has “plagued” both cinema and OTT platforms, with a 62 per cent surge in piracy during the COVID-19 lockdown.

“Piracy is a significant plague that is all pervasive in the film industry and now in OTT world as well. The film industry is facing a loss of Rs 20,000 crore annually because of piracy. Online piracy saw a 62 per cebt surge during the pandemic. We passed the Cinematographic (Amendment) Bill, a year back but it lacks a concrete mechanism against online piracy and focuses largely on anti-cam recording in multiplexes,” Raghav said in the speech.

He added, “As we go digital with more movies being streamed on platforms, I ask the Government what is being done to curb the issue of digital piracy on OTT and whether the government has any plans to bring a dedicated legislation for the same?”

After Raghav concluded his speech, Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar smiled and remarked, “He knows much about the film industry. Off late, he’s gained experience.”

Parineeti applauded Raghav for addressing the issue of film piracy.

“You’re a star for raising this important issue in Parliament, my love (king emoji),” she wrote on X.

Parineeti and Raghav tied the knot on September 24, 2024 at the Leela Palace Hotel in Udaipur, Rajasthan in the presence of close friends and family members. It was attended by several well-known faces of the entertainment industry and politicians. (ANI)

Delhi bus operations in Aadhar

Delhi Govt Lists New Safety Measures For Bus Ops; Aadhar-Based Duty Allocation For Drivers

Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot on Wednesday listed new safety measures for bus operations in Delhi and said that the duty allocation for all drivers will now be Aadhar-based.

Addressing a press conference, Gahlot said that in the last two years, they have inducted 2000 buses.

“More importantly, we need to see how our buses are performing on the road. Recently, a lot of emphasis has been placed on lane driving. There have also been a few accidents in the past days. Some issues have come to our attention, such as some drivers taking on multiple duties, leading to fatigue. Delhi government buses run a minimum of 200 km per day. There is also a provision that after 8 hours, the driver must be given rest,” he said.

“The first step we have taken is that the duty allocation for all drivers will now be Aadhar-based. It will be linked to Aadhar so that no one can take a double shift. The software for this is currently being developed. If a driver completes one shift, their name will automatically be removed from the next shift,” he added.

Further, Kailash Gahlot said that a biometric face recognition system is being installed at the depots.

“If we still receive complaints, the depot manager will also be held responsible and action will be taken against them,” he said.

He also pointed out that drivers who cannot drive efficiently and safely will be dismissed.

“A common pool is being created. Currently, if a driver has an accident and is blacklisted from one depot, they can work at another depot because we do not have a unified database. When we have unified data, a blacklisted driver will not be able to get a job as a driver elsewhere,” Gahlot said.

On alcohol consumption of drivers, the Delhi Transport Minister said that breath analyzer machines will be installed in every depot.

“In some places, it has been observed that drivers have consumed alcohol. To rule this out, breath analysers will be installed in every depot, and drivers will have to pass this test before starting their duty. From now on, drivers’ medical check-ups will only be conducted in Delhi government hospitals, and their reports will be final. Six hospitals have been designated for this purpose,” Kailash Gahlot said. (ANI)

Sitharaman in her interim Budget

LS Passes Finance Bill, Sitharaman Says Govt Has Strived For Growth,Simplification Of Tax Laws

Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the Finance Bill 2024-25 with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stating that the government has strived for greater simplification of tax laws and procedures to enable growth and employment in the country.

The Finance (No.2) Bill, 2024 was passed after a reply by Sitharaman with the House rejecting the amendments moved by opposition by a voice vote.

In her reply, Sitharaman said the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been to establish a simple, efficient and fair technology-driven taxation regime in the country.

“So, simplification and ease of compliance for the taxpayer has been the primary objective with which in the last 10 years, and this year, in the third term of PM Modi, the approach to taxation has been to simplify it, reduce the burden on taxpayer and make sure it is transparent and equitable,” she said.

“This year also, our approach has been that we bring in greater simplification of tax laws and procedures, and that we enable growth and employment in this country,” she added.

Sitharaman presented the Union Budget in Parliament on July 23. This is the first full budget of the NDA government led by PM Modi. The BJP-led alliance won a third successive term earlier this year.

The Lok Sabha took up discussion on the Finance Bill after the Appropriation Bill for the central government’s expenditure for 2024-25 was passed by the House on Monday.

Sitharaman said the BJP-led government has again revised slabs in the new tax-filing regime in the Union Budget presented last month.

Noting that the government did not put additional tax burden during the Covid to meet government expenditure, she said the approach is to simplify taxation and reduce the burden on taxpayers.

Replying to the opposition members who repeatedly accused the government of burdening taxpayers both through direct and indirect taxes, she said that the government has raised standard deduction for salaried employees, increased the limit of exemption of capital gains on certain listed financial assets and abolished angel tax.

“Standard deduction for salaried employees has also been increased from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000 in the new regime in this budget. This is an effective relief up to Rs 17,500 for a salaried employee,” she said.

“In 2023, the slabs for personal income tax were significantly liberalised. All taxpayers had reduced tax liability of Rs 37500. This govt has again revised slabs in the new regime,” she added.

The minister said that these steps will benefit the middle class.

For the benefit of the lower and middle-income classes, Sitharaman in her Budget speech proposed to increase the limit of exemption of capital gains on certain listed financial assets from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.25 lakh per year.

The Union Budget for 2024-25 pegged the fiscal deficit target at 4.9 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP). The government intends to bring the fiscal deficit below 4.5 per cent of GDP by the financial year 2025-26. The difference between total revenue and total expenditure of the government is termed the fiscal deficit.

The central government kept the capital expenditure outlay at Rs 11.11 lakh crore for 2024-25, as was announced by Sitharaman in her interim Budget, ahead of the General elections. A capital expenditure, or capex, is used to set up long-term physical or fixed assets. (ANI)
