CJI Chandrachud Lok Adalat

CJI Chandrachud Emphasises For More Lok Adalat’s

Noting the plight of common men who are “fed up” with court proceedings, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud highlighted on Saturday the importance of Lok Adalats as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism.

He stressed that the judicial process is a punishment for litigants, due to which they often desperately look for settlements to end tiresome litigation by accepting settlements even below their legal entitlements.

CJI also cited several cases which were settled in the Special Lok Adalat. He cited a motor accident case in which the claimant was ready to settle the case for lower compensation despite being entitled to enhancement.

“Parties are ready to accept any sort of settlement because they want to get out of the system,” said the CJI.

Speaking at the commemoration function of the Special Lok Adalat, CJI said, “Log itna trast ho jate hain court ke mamlon se wo koi bhi settlement chahte hain… Bas court se dur kara dijiye (People are so fed up with the matters of the court that they just want a settlement). This is also a problem that we see as judges. This process is the punishment and that is a cause of concern for all of us as judges.”

He said there is a need for institutionalising the process of dispensing justice through Lok Adalats.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal also attended the event and said that mediation is a part of Indian culture. He said Lord Krishna attempted to mediate between the Kauravas and Pandavas in the Mahabharata.

The Supreme Court today organised a commemoration function for the Special Lok Adalat week that began on July 29 and ended on August 2.

During this week, the court heard Lok Adalat matters every afternoon in an attempt to settle cases.

Lok Adalats are an essential part of the judicial system, facilitating alternative dispute resolution to expedite and encourage amicable settlements.

As per the Supreme Court, the number of cases selected for the Special Lok Adalat was 14,045. 4,883 cases were listed before the Lok Adalat benches and 920 cases were disposed of. (ANI)

Indian Air Force Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla

IAF’s Wing Commander Shubhanshu Picked As ‘Prime Astronaut’ For Indo-US Mission To Space Station

Indian Air Force Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla has been selected as the prime astronaut for the upcoming Indo-US mission to the International Space Station (ISS), the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced.

A joint statement signed between India and the US during the official state visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June 2023 envisioned a joint ISRO-NASA effort to the ISS.

Towards the goal of mounting a joint ISRO-NASA effort, the Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) of ISRO has entered into a Space Flight Agreement (SFA) with NASA-identified service provider Axiom Space Inc, USA for its upcoming Axiom-4 mission to the ISS, the Indian space agency said on Friday.

A National Mission Assignment Board has recommended two Gaganyatris as prime and backup Mission Pilot for this mission. These include Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla (Prime) and Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair (Backup).

“The assigned crewmembers will be finally approved to fly to the International Space Station by the Multilateral Crew Operations Panel (MCOP),” ISRO statement read.

The recommended Gaganyatris will commence their training for the mission from the first week of August, ISRO said.

During the mission, the Gaganyatri will undertake selected scientific research and technology demonstration experiments on board the ISS as well as engage in space outreach activities. The experiences gained during this mission will be beneficial for the Indian Human Space Program and it will also strengthen human space flight cooperation between ISRO and NASA.

Gaganyaan project envisages a demonstration of human spaceflight capability by launching a crew of 3 members to an orbit of 400 km for a 3-day mission and bringing them back safely to earth, by landing in Indian sea waters.

In February this year, PM Modi announced the names of the four chosen Indian Air Force pilots; Group Captain Prashanth Nair, Group Captain Ajit Krishnan, Group Captain Angad Pratap, and Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla who would be part of India’s first human space flight programme. It is slated to be launched in 2024-25.

The four astronauts were trained at Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Russia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had reviewed the progress of the Gaganyaan mission and bestowed ‘astronaut wings’ to the astronaut-designates at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre.

The Gaganyaan mission is India’s first human space flight program for which extensive preparations are underway at various ISRO centres.

“India’s success in the space sector is sowing the seeds of scientific temperament in the country’s young generation,” PM Modi said in his address at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre .

The pre-requisites for Gaganyaan mission include development of many critical technologies including human rated launch vehicle for carrying crew safely to space, Life Support System to provide an earth like environment to crew in space, crew emergency escape provision and evolving crew management aspects for training, recovery and rehabilitation of crew.

Various precursor missions are planned for demonstrating the Technology Preparedness Levels before carrying out the actual Human Space Flight mission. These demonstrator missions include Integrated Air Drop Test (IADT), Pad Abort Test (PAT) and Test Vehicle (TV) flights. Safety and reliability of all systems will be proven in unmanned missions preceding manned mission.

LVM3 rocket – The well proven and reliable heavy lift launcher of ISRO, is identified as the launch vehicle for Gaganyaan mission.

Human safety is of paramount importance in Gaganyaan mission. In order to ensure the same, various new technologies comprising of Engineering systems and Human centric systems are being developed and realised.

In 2023, in a stellar display of prowess, India soared to new heights with the successful soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the South Pole of the Moon and the successful launch of Aditya-L1, India’s first solar mission.

These milestones not only secured India’s standing in the global space economy but also fueled the engines for the private space sector in India.

Among other feats India now aims for setting up ‘Bharatiya Antariksha Station’ by 2035, and sending the first Indian to the Moon by 2040. (ANI)

Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Chandra Pawar) leader Anil Deshmukh

Such Man With Criminal Background Can’t Be Believed: Deshmukh On Waze’s Allegations

Rejecting allegations made against him by dismissed Mumbai Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Waze, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Chandra Pawar) leader Anil Deshmukh said that someone with a “criminal background” can’t be believed and added that “Waze says what Devendra Fadnavis tells him.”

“5-6 days back, I had levelled allegations against Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, that 3 years ago he attempted to send the then CM Uddhav Thackeray to jail, attempted to send Aaditya Thackeray to jail and came to me with an affidavit for me to level allegations against them so that they go to jail. I revealed this to the public. Now, this is a new tactic by Devendra Fadnavis. He has caught Sachin Waze and he is using him,” Deshmukh said, addressing a press conference.

He further asserted that someone with a “criminal background” can’t be believed.

“The High Court had said about Sachin Waze that he is a man with a criminal background, he has been arrested on two murder charges, and he is still lodged in jail. Such a man with a criminal background can’t be believed, and his statement can’t be trusted–the Bombay High Court judgement states the same. Did Devendra Fadnavis get only such a man, one with a criminal background? Sachin Waze says what Devendra Fadnavis tells him,” he added.

He further said, “You know who is behind the allegations levelled by Sachin Waze against me. The public should understand all of this.”

Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut reacted to Waze’s remarks and said, “Who is Sachin Waze? Where is he? Is he in the Sabarmati Ashram? When the BJP goes to the polls, they fear losing the election. Therefore, they are doing these things. This clearly shows they are losing. Anil Deshmukh brought information ahead and to answer his allegations, they need a person from jail who is accused and facing charges of terrorism. I am shocked that the media is giving such importance to him.”

Sanjay Raut further said that BJP has brought down the level of Maharashtra politics.

“An accused (in the 2021 Antilia bomb scare) is speaking like a BJP worker. This way they have brought down the level of Maharashtra politics…Anil Deshmukh was a former Minister, he has the right to speak but to put pressure on him, you (BJP) have to take the help of a terrorist. This is your failure…they have lost the election mentally,” Raut added.

Dismissed Mumbai Assistant Police Inspector and accused in the Rs 100 crore extortion case, Sachin Waze on Friday said that he has written a letter to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and submitted all the evidence of alleged bribes taken by former Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.

“Whatever has happened, the proof is there. The money used to go through his (Anil Deshmukh) PA, CBI has the proof and I have also written a letter to Devendra Fadnavis. I have submitted all the evidence. In the letter that I have written, I have given the name of Jayant Patil as well,” Waze told ANI.

He further said, “I am ready for that (NARCO test).”

Sachin Waze is also accused in the 2021 Antilia bomb scare and Mansukh Hiren murder case.

The CBI had registered a corruption case against Deshmukh following allegations that Deshmukh as home minister had directed police officials to collect Rs 100 crore per month from bar owners. Deshmukh was later arrested in the case before securing bail.

Former Home Minister of Maharashtra Anil Deshmukh had been arrested by the ED in 2021 in an alleged money laundering case and spent several months in jail.

The NIA arrested Sachin Waze in March 2021 in connection with the investigation into the recovery of explosives from a car parked near Mukesh Ambani’s house in Mumbai. Waze is the prime accused of placing an explosive-laden vehicle near Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani’s house, Antilia, in Mumbai on February 25, 2021. (ANI)

Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina EAM

With Japan, There Is Scope Of Growing Business: Jaishankar

Acknowledging the fact that India and Japan have a strategic convergence of interests, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday said there is scope for growing business between both nations and New Delhi will have to work harder with Tokyo.

The External Affairs Minister further stated that the people in Japan also appreciate that they have to work with India, keeping in mind the growing trade ties between the nations.

“With Japan, there is scope of growing business. We have done decently on investment. We have a target of 5 trillion yen which is USD 42 billion till 2027 as new investments to come in for those 5 years. We have reached halfway to the target, that is what I was told. But the fact is, given today the changing geoeconomics and new investment strategies of many countries, we have to work harder with Japan,” Jaishankar said in his remarks at the Jasjit Singh Memorial Lecture here in New Delhi today.

The minister also reminisced about his recent trip to Japan and underscored the shared interests of both nations.

“I have just come back from Japan the day before yesterday. Yesterday We had the Speaker of the Japanese parliament here with a political-business mixed delegation here. We have, in a sense basic political understanding. I think the strategic people in Japan also appreciate that they have to work with India and that our interests are very convergent,” the EAM said.

“My sense is the business logic still has not got that kind of wait and momentum in their of system. It is doing decently but at a certainly flat level,” he added.

Jaishankar also went on to highlight how India has the lowest number of people in Japan, among South Asians, calling it a “big gap.”

“Among South Asians, actually India has the lowest number of people in Japan. There are more Nepalis, Sri Lankans, Bangladeshis, and Pakistanis working in Japan than there are Indians. If you look at the number of Indian students in Japan, there are 1.3 million Indian students across the world. There are 1500 Indian students in Japan. There are big gaps there, we need to work harder at those gaps. Because, especially with Japan, if you do not drill down and make it happen, and fix it bottom up, it is not going to unfold by itself,” the minister said.

Jaishankar visited Japan this week, where he held a meeting with top leaders of the country.

In one such meeting, Jaishankar, along with his Japanese counterpart, Yoko Kamikawa shared the view that they would strengthen bilateral cooperation, including the steady progress of the high-speed rail project, a flagship project between Japan and India.

Jaishankar and Yoko also welcomed the expansion of recruitment for Indian nationals under the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme and the start of the dispatch of Japanese Language Partners to India and exchanged views on cooperation regarding the Security Council reform, with a view to the Future Summit in September 2024, according to an official release of the Foreign Ministry of Japan.
