Rahul Shedding Crocodile Tears Over Caste Census: Lalan Singh

Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh hit out at the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and claimed that he was shedding crocodile tears over the caste census and giving slogans to confuse people.

Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh said, “Rahul Gandhi is very concerned about the caste census. When Nitish Kumar conducted the census in Bihar and at that time we were in INDIA, then 2 meetings were held, we said that a resolution should be passed on the caste census. But he did not pass the resolution under pressure from Mamata Banerjee. Today he is shedding crocodile tears. When we got the census done, has Rahul Gandhi ever praised it in Bihar to date? He is just giving a slogan to confuse the public.”

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi said that the INDIA alliance is calling for a caste census because 90 per cent of the population is being excluded despite possessing the necessary skills and talent.

“90 per cent of the people are not a part of the system. They have the required skill, talent but they are not connected with the system. That’s why we are demanding for a caste census.”

Reacting to the Modi government’s approval of the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), which will come into effect from April 1 2025, Singh said that the scheme is very good.

“Government under UPS has also increased its contribution from 14 per cent currently in NPS to 18.5 per cent under UPS, Congress-ruled states should also replicate the model in their states,” he added. (ANI)

Yemen Al Jazeera boat sinks

13 Dead , 14 Missing After Boat Sinks Off Yemen: IOM

At least 13 people have died and 14 others are missing after a boat sank off the coast of Yemen, Al Jazeera reported, citing the United Nations migration agency.

In a statement on Sunday, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said, “A migrant boat capsized off the coast of Yemen’s Taiz governorate on Tuesday.”

It further said that the boat, which departed from Djibouti with 25 Ethiopians and two Yemeni nations, sank near Dubab district in Bani al-Hakam subdistrict in Yemen, Al Jazeera reported.

The IOM said 11 men and two women were among those confirmed dead as a search operation is being conducted to locate the missing, including the Yemeni captain and his assistant. It stated that the cause of the capsizing of the ship remains unclear.

The acting chief of IOM’s mission in Yemen stated, “This latest tragedy is a stark reminder of the perils faced by migrants on this route.”

“Every life lost in these dangerous waters is one too many, and it is imperative that we do not normalise these devastating losses and instead work collectively to ensure that migrants are protected and supported throughout their journeys,” Huber added.

The IOM said that the boat capsize incident on Tuesday follows similar shipwrecks in June and July.

The UN agency said, “[It] is yet another devastating reminder of the extreme dangers of this migration route and the reliance on smuggling networks. Vulnerable migrants are often pushed into perilous conditions by smugglers as they attempt to flee desperate circumstances in search of safety and opportunity in the Gulf states.”

Tens of thousands of refugees and migrants set off yearly from the Horn of Africa to escape conflict, natural disasters or poor economic prospects and travel across the Red Sea to reach the Gulf, Al Jazeera reported.

In 2023, the IOM recorded over 97,200 arrivals in Yemen in 2023, surpassing the previous year’s numbers. People who are unable to reach Yemen often face such threats to their safety, as the Arabian Peninsula’s poorest country has been mired in civil war for nearly 10 years. Many people are attempting to reach Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations for employment as labourers or domestic workers. (ANI)

Pavel Durov Telegram

Telegram Founder Pavel Durov Detained At French Airport

The founder of the Telegram messaging app, Pavel Durov, who had an arrest warrant issued against him, was detained by the French authorities at an airport outside Paris, CNN reported.

Officers from France’s anti-fraud office, attached to French customs, took the French-Russian billionaire into custody on Saturday evening after he arrived at Bourget Airport on a flight from Azerbaijan, according to CNN affiliate BFMTV.

Durov, 39, was wanted under a French arrest warrant due to the lack of moderation on Telegram, which allegedly led to the platform being used for money laundering, drug trafficking and sharing pedophilic content.

According to BFMTV, the Telegram founder had not regularly travelled to France and Europe since the arrest warrant was issued.

Notably, France issued an arrest warrant for Durov on charges of complicity in drug trafficking, crimes against children and fraud due to the lack of moderation on Telegram and his failure to cooperate with law enforcement, the Moscow Times reported, citing French local media.

The Russian-born founder of Telegram, which he says boasts over 900 million users, is currently based in Dubai. He became a naturalised French citizen in August 2021.

Durov, who is also the founder of the VKontakte social network, left Russia in 2014 after he refused to share VKontakte users’ data with Russian security services. Later, Russia unsuccessfully attempted to block Telegram over its refusal to provide users’ online communications to security services.

Telegram is widely used by Russian speakers. It has become a key platform for sharing information about the war in Ukraine and is reportedly used by the Russian military to communicate.(ANI)

The anti-corruption branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)

CBI Conducts Searches At Premises Of Former RG Kar Medical College Principal

The anti-corruption branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted searches on Sunday at multiple locations connected to former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and his relatives in West Bengal’s Kolkata.

According to CBI sources, searches were underway at 15 locations across the city related to Dr Ghosh and his relatives.

A CBI team also reached the residence of Dr Debashish Som, Demonstrator of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, on Sunday morning, they said.

These actions follow a complaint filed three days earlier by Akhtar Ali, former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, alleging corruption and irregularities at the institution and specifically naming Dr Debashish Som.

On Saturday, the CBI filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Dr Sandip Ghosh based on directives from the Calcutta High Court. The investigation was initiated after a single bench of the High Court ordered the CBI to probe the alleged corruption at the medical college.

Earlier, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) from the Calcutta High Court visited the CBI office at Nizam Palace and handed over crucial documents related to the case. Acting promptly on this information, the CBI filed the FIR and submitted a copy to the Alipur Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court on Saturday.

The Calcutta High Court has granted the CBI three weeks to submit a progress report on the investigation, which is to be presented on September 17.

Earlier, on Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered the security of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to be handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) while hearing the suo motu case concerning the rape and murder of the trainee doctor.

The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. (ANI)

country's escalating tensions with Lebanon Israel.ountry's escalating tensions with Lebanon according to The Times of Israel.

Emergency Situation Declared In Israel For Next 48 Hours

Israel has declared an emergency for the next 48 hours amid the country’s escalating tensions with Lebanon, according to The Times of Israel.

Israel’s Defence Minister, Yoav Gallant, declared an emergency. This comes as a “special situation in the home front,” which enables the IDF Home Front Command to issue restrictions.

In emergencies, the legal term “special situation” is used to give authorities more authority over the civilian population, simplifying attempts to protect them. It is valid for 48 hours, unless extended by cabinet ministers.

As tensions continue to rise, the Israeli public remains on high alert, bracing for the possibility of further incidents.

Earlier today, Israel Defence Forces (IDF) spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari warned the Lebanese citizens who are in southern Lebanon of possible attacks by Israel in retaliation to Hezbollah strikes.

In a press conference, the IDF spokesperson said, “We warn the Lebanese citizens who are in southern Lebanon; we recognise that Hezbollah is now preparing to shoot widely into Israeli territory near your home. You are in danger. We attack and remove Hezbollah threats. Anyone who is near the areas where Hezbollah operates is required to stay away from them immediately.”

“In the near future, Hezbollah will launch rockets, and possibly missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, towards the territory of the State of Israel. Accordingly, “life-saving” instructions of the Home Front Command will be distributed in the various regions. The Home Front Command will update the areas where one must stay near the protected area or inside the protected area,” Hagari said.

“The IDF is doing and will do everything necessary to protect the citizens of the State of Israel,” he added.

After Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran last month, which resulted in promises of “punishment” from Iran, Israel is preparing for a strong retaliation.

However, Israel has not denied or confirmed that it was responsible for Haniyeh’s death, but it had previously threatened to execute him and other senior Hamas figures for their involvement in the terrorist attacks on October 7.

Tensions in West Asia have escalated after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on July 31 that Ismail Haniyeh had been killed in an attack in Iran’s capital, Tehran. (ANI)

Paralympics 2024 Paris India

Over 20 Indian Paralympics’ 24 Athletes Leave For Paris

Over 20 athletes from the Indian contingent for the Paralympics 2024 departed for Paris from Delhi airport on Sunday, going to the host nation with expectations, the best wishes of a billion countrymen and support from all government and private partners that will motivate the athletes to surpass the record haul of 19 medals set in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

After the sporting extravaganza that was the Paris Olympics, the sporting action will continue with the Paris Paralympics from August 28 onwards and will go on till September 8. As Chef de Mission, Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) vice president Satya Prakash Sangwan will lead India’s largest-ever contingent of 84 para-athletes competing across 12 sports disciplines. His role will be pivotal in ensuring that the Indian team has the support and guidance they need to excel on the global stage.

Various reputed para-athletes, such as table tennis stars Bhavina Patel and Sonalben Patel, para-badminton players Manoj Sarkar, Manisha Ramdass and gold medallist Krishna Nagar, and para-athletes Sachin Sachin Sarjerao Khilari and Sakshi Kasana, among others, were at the airport to catch their flight to Paris.

Some of the athletes and PCI officials interacted with ANI and talked about the expectations from the ongoing competition, the preparation done by athletes, and support for players from various government and private entities.

PCI vice president and Chef-de-Mission of the continent, SP Sangwan, told ANI that the widespread attention that athletes have received has made them feel really good and that they will be returning home with at least 25-30 medals.

“Earlier, people used to ignore us. But now, this time we have received so much attention that it feels good. Our players are our heroes. We will win 25-30 medals, at least. At least eight to ten times, we will raise our tricolour in Paris by winning a gold medal. We are expecting 10 medals at least,” Sangwan told ANI.

He said that all 84 players in the contingent are capable of winning a gold medal, but listed athletes Sumit Antil, Yogesh Kathuniya, Pranav Soorma, and badminton players as some big contenders. “Most medals will be won in athletics.”.

Sangwan said that the central government, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Swayam, the accessibility partner of PCI, have helped athletes a lot.

“It was my dream to carry my tricolour with the group. We are targeting the top eight-ten rankings. I would like to thank the media for providing us with coverage and exposure,” added Sangwan.

Para-badminton player Manoj, a bronze medallist from Tokyo 2020, is excited to go a few steps better this time in his campaign.

“I secured a bronze medal in the singles competition last time. I am really excited to change the colour of my medal this time around and cannot wait to play. I feel that badminton itself will bring 10 medals, as compared to four last time. Coming to the whole contingent, we will bring 25-plus medals,” said Manoj to ANI.

On Tokyo 2020 gold medallist Pramod Bhagat missing out on action due to an anti-doping violation, Manoj said, “We will really miss him this time around. He was a big medal contender. It is a loss for us. Last time, he defeated me to reach the final. He was my doubles partner as well. As a team, we are missing him a lot.”

On August 13, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) released a statement to confirm that the CAS handed Bhagat an 18-month ban for whereabouts failures. Bhagat will remain suspended from all badminton-related activities until September 1, 2025. As a result, he won’t have the opportunity to defend his title and will miss the marquee event in Paris.

Talking about support from government and private entities, Manoj said that he has received a lot of help under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) from SAI, PCI, etc.

“Earlier, we did not know what physios were. We did not have them. Now we have two physios, dieticians, strength and conditioning coaches, etc to take care of us and make sure we are injury-free and all things are looked after,” added Manoj.

Para-table tennis stars Bhavina Patel and Sonalben Patel are also very optimistic about their and their country’s performances at the Paralympics and talked about the support shown by the government.

“This is my second Paralympics. We are going to bring home a lot of medals. The contingent is much bigger and we will all give our best,” said Bhavina, the Tokyo 2020 silver medallist, to ANI.

“It feels really good to tell that government has supported us a lot, be it through SAI, Table Tennis Federation of India, etc. Other organisations, like OGQ (Olympic Gold Quest), have supported us. That is why so many athletes. Our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, believes that India will progress if people play. This is now embedded in our minds,” she added.

Bhavina said that Swayam has helped athletes with accessibility by providing them with special vehicles that will facilitate their travel and increase their overall comfort.

Sonalben, the Commonwealth and Asian Games medallist who is now appearing in her second Paralympics, is also very excited to put her four years of hard work to the test.

“I hope I can win a medal. This time, we are expecting a lot of medals for the whole contingent. I cannot give a number, but I can hope we will do better than last time. I am confident that we will get gold medals in double digits. Rest; it is up to god,” she added.

On help received regarding accessibility to the players via special vehicles, Sonalben said, “I have never seen such vehicles in India before. SAI and OGQ have helped me a lot. Grassroot players need sponsorships to go to Paralympics. If these come, only then we will get a medal.”

Shot put athlete Sachin is also excited for his Paralympic debut after featuring in two World Championships and years of preparation. He told ANI that the Paralympic Committee of India and the Paralympic Committee of Maharashtra supported him a lot.

“Hope I will come back with gold. My coach, dieticians, physios etc have worked hard with me. I have also been associated with the TOPS scheme since 2022 and am getting a lot of facilities from central government,” he added.

Para-badminton player Manisha, a former world number one in women’s singles competition, also told ANI about the help she has received under the TOPS Scheme.

“I am under TOPS (Target Olympic Podium Scheme). TOPS has helped us a lot. It is supporting us financially, in practice and for the tournaments. They are spending a lot of money on us. I hope I will come back with a medal,” she said.

On the absence of Pramod from the Paralympics, Manisha said that it is a huge loss for India but expressed optimism that he will make a great comeback to the sport.

Discus throw athlete Sakshi Kasana said that she always dreamt of playing sports since she was a kid.

“I hope 30 medals come this time; I think 70 percent of medals will come from athletics itself. My coaches have helped me a lot in shaping my sleep pattern, diet, training, etc. Let us see what the results are. For past six months, Khelo India scheme has been supporting me. I am staying in a room at JLN Stadium, which has helped me practice better. The special vehicles provided to us have made our journey easier,” she added.

At the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, India won five gold medals, eight silver and six bronze medals, bringing home a record total of 19 medals. (ANI)
