The Other Kashmir – Occupied & Forgotten

The contrast could not be starker. In the throes of its first election to the assembly that stands dissolved and the statehood itself annulled, myriad issues are being debated in Jammu and Kashmir. Among them are the return to statehood, the special status it enjoyed under Article 370 of the Constitution, its people’s peace and economic prosperity, the threat from militancy within, and the dark shadow of the influx of terrorists from the neighbourhood.

To parties from the Kashmir Valley seeking a return to the special status, the Union government, apparently enthused by the 58 per cent voter turnout in the Lok Sabha elections, says statehood when feasible, but no special status.

Talking to Pakistan? Yes, no, not now, or never? Not till peace is restored? Does New Delhi admit that it has failed to achieve it in the last five years? Leave all these and more to the outcome of the most crucial election in the life of one of the world’s most militarized and India’s most troubled places – where tourists go despite the terror threat.

Now, look at the conditions across the Line of Control (LoC) that separates the territory in dispute for 77 years, and counting. Retired Indian diplomat Dinkar P. Srivastava aptly calls it the “Forgotten Kashmir” in his book that focuses on the other side of the LoC.

Reports from Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir/Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan constantly speak of public protests over food shortages, and forced migration. It is ruled directly from Islamabad with the Pakistan army calling all the shots.

But viewed from the outside, the absence of democracy for one, is ignored for the most part by the flag-bearers of democracy, especially the former colonial masters who laid the ground for the dispute in the first place for their larger geostrategic interests.

Strangely, even in India which claims the entire territory and sovereignty over it, the discourse rarely looks across the LoC. It is mostly Jammu versus the Valley, more polarized than ever in recent times.

Strangely again, but not surprisingly, it is forgotten by the Pakistani people also. The people of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir have “neither azadi nor autonomy”, Srivastava says, “They do not figure in the discourse of Pakistani leaders. They are forgotten in their ‘obsession’ with the Kashmir cause.” Srivastava bemoans the shedding of much blood for this ‘cause’ which has Pakistan waging four bloody conflicts with India with clear objectives and plans, of ‘conquering’ Kashmir.

Only, the world is losing interest in Pakistan’s ‘cause’. The Muslim brethren Iran and Saudi Arabia and even China, the “all-weather friend”, have of late asked for a “peaceful resolution through talks”.

Unlike in the past, resolutions blaming India by the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) have become fewer. The last one, passed in 2022 was because Pakistan was hosting the meet. This was after chiding in the Pakistani media that the world community was ignoring the ‘cause’ and even the Muslim Ummah was eager to “do business” with India.

Pakistan is in a prolonged political and economic mess. But even otherwise, people in PoK/AJK either have no jobs or lose them to “reliable Outsiders” from other provinces. The government prosecutes the ‘nationalists’ while the population, shifted frequently as part of combating militancy, is targeted by the militants as well.

Srivastava says the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) entering through the territory which Pakistan had illegally ceded to China may promise prosperity to Pakistan, but it has turned Gilgit Baltistan, known for beautiful mountains and river systems into a cluster of military garrisons.

His book meticulously goes into the minutiae of constitutional developments as well as governance in both Azad Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan and details how the people in the area have been systematically denied their fundamental rights and ruthlessly exploited by Pakistan.

Human Rights Watch (HRW), the global rights watchdog has covered the situation inside POK in its report With Friends Like These…. It states: “In practice, the Pakistani government in Islamabad, the Pakistani army and the Pakistani intelligence services (Inter-Services Intelligence) control all aspects of political life in Azad Kashmir-though Azad means free, the residents of Azad Kashmir are anything but.

“Azad Kashmir is a land of strict curbs on political pluralism, freedom of expression, and freedom of association; a muzzled press; banned books; arbitrary arrest and detention and torture at the hands of the Pakistani military and the police; and discrimination against refugees from Jammu and Kashmir state.”

ALSO READ: Pakistan Army Wins Election In PoK

HRW scathingly records: “Singled out are Kashmiri nationalists who do not support the idea of Kashmir’s accession to Pakistan. Anyone who wants to take part in public life has to sign a pledge of loyalty to Pakistan, while anyone who publicly supports or works for an independent Kashmir is persecuted. For those expressing independent or unpopular political views, there is a pervasive fear of Pakistani military and intelligence services and of militant organizations acting at their behest or independently.”

Ironically, POK/AJK generates over a third of Pakistan’s around 8,000 MW hydropower. But it has neither political power, nor does it benefit from the power (energy) it generates. It has to pay a steep tariff, higher than other provinces, amidst power cuts and breakdowns.

Pakistan assumed direct powers within the POK after the 13th Amendment to the PoK Constitution in 2018. Going deeply into how Pakistan has colonised the PoK/AJK, Srivastava brings out that the situation of Gilgit-Baltistan is much worse than that of PoK. While elections based on the adult franchise were held in PoK in 1970, the Northern Area, now called Gilgit-Baltistan, had to wait till 2009 before it got an elected assembly.

Gilgit-Baltistan Order of 2009 gave limited autonomy and allowed the local assembly to legislate on 161 subjects. The entire list was abolished under the Gilgit-Baltistan Order of 2018. There were popular protests, and the G-B Supreme Appellate Court set aside the Order, much to Islamabad’s discomfiture. With these far-reaching internal changes within PoK and G-B, both are integrated in Pakistan in all but name. This was done by Pakistan a year before the deletion of Article 370 by India.

Professor Ishtiaque Ahmed, a renowned Sweden-based Pakistani scholar, although disagreeing with Srivastava on some points, commends his effort: “The most impressive feature of the book is that it relies heavily on Pakistani source material. Also referenced are reports of the International Crisis Group (ICG). I checked some of the material used and found that the references to Pakistani and international sources were indeed correct.”

Siddhant Chaturvedi SRK

Wonder How SRK Remains So Motivated: Siddhant Chaturvedi

Siddhant Chaturvedi, who has worked in several films such as ‘Gully Boy’, ‘Gehraiyaan’, ‘Phone Bhoot’ has won many hearts with his acting talent and charming looks.

After being part of successful projects, the actor feels it is challenging to keep yourself motivated every day after being at the top.

In a conversation with ANI, he talked about his dream of reaching the top of his and seeing how people keep themselves motivated after being successful.

He shared, “I feel the most frightening thing is when I think about those people who are at the top because if you are number one, then you have everything. Then how do you motivate yourself every day?”

The ‘Gehraiyaan’ actor recalled meeting Shah Rukh Khan and added that he always wondered how stars like him keep themselves motivated as actors as they have achieved so much. He also said that he someday wants to be at the highest level of his career.

“If I had met Messi, or, when I meet Shah Rukh sir, or, whoever I meet, who I feel is number one in their field, I feel, how do you motivate yourself? Because here, we are still a wolf at the bottom? So, we are more hungry. But when you are there, how do you…then everything is there. So, I am very curious about that. Because then, failures also don’t impact you that much. You are so invincible. So, that is, I think that is commendable. And my goal is to someday reach there. Because I want to see how the world looks like on the top of that mountain.”

Siddhant talked about his journey so far and credited his fans for his success.

“I’m here because of them. There’s no kind of backing or anything. So for them(fans), that’s why I always try to bring something new and keep them excited. At the same time, I try to hide some things from my personal life. I don’t want to show things on social media because I want to keep that little mystery about me. But at the same time, I will share my thoughts with them,” he further said.

The actor who has made a place in the industry and gearing up for the release of his next project ‘Yudhra’, said that there are certain key elements to survive in the industry.

But what happens is that when fame and all these things come, people start moving away. No matter what the highs or falls are, you have to retain yourself. So I think that is the prerequisite do not forget where you came from and why did you want to come here. That is very important,” said Siddhant.

Meanwhile, Siddhant is all set to take on the role of a host at IIFA 2024 for the first time. Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar, Rana Daggubati, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Abhishek Banerjee are going to showcase their hosting skills in Abu Dhabi soon.

BJP MP Sambit Patra Rahul Gandhi

Patra Says Rahul Dividing Contry Over Caste, Religion On Foreign Soil

BJP MP Sambit Patra on Thursday hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleging that the LoP in the Lok Sabha was trying to divide the country on caste and religion even on foreign soil.

“Rahul Gandhi’s arrogance of being the Leader of Opposition is not just visible in the Parliament, his stupidity was also seen in America… I am using this word because crores of Indians are hurt by the way he has portrayed India in the US… Rahul Gandhi has committed treason in the US… He tried to divide castes and religions on foreign soil… He made a harsh statement on Sikhs in a foreign country… This is treason and when there is treason, using a word like ‘stupidity’ is appropriate,” BJP MP Sambit Patra said.,

The BJP MP also took a dig at Rahul Gandhi’s brief pause when an audience at his function in the US asked what the ‘A’ stands for in the acronym of the opposition alliance ‘INDIA’. Patra said that the Congress leader took time because he was thinking about whether ‘A’ stands for appeasement, apraadh(crime) or arrogance.

“Someone asked him (Rahul Gandhi) if it is INDIA alliance, then what does the ‘A’ stand for? After thinking for some time, Rahul Gandhi remembered that it stands for ‘Alliance’. Rahul Gandhi thought for a while before answering because he was confused if the ‘A’ stands for appeasement, apraadh (crime), or arrogance,” Patra told reporters here.

“A for ‘Apraadh’, there is TMC’s apraadh (crime) in Bengal, ‘A’ for appeasement, Congress’ appeasement in Himachal Pradesh, and ‘A’ for arrogance of the Congress and its alliance parties who drag the institution of CJI in politics. They have the arrogance of dragging the Ganesh festival into politics,” he added.

Reacting to the protests over the alleged illegal construction of a mosque in Sanjauli, Himachal Pradesh, Patra accused the Congress of indulging in appeasement politics.

“Hindu outfits and common people of Shimla are on the streets and are raising their voice against an illegal mosque. It is very clear that the concerned mosque is illegal. Congress’ Rural Development Minister Anirudh Singh asked on the floor of the House where the people of the ‘Jamaat’ come from. He also spoke on ‘Love Jihad’… Congress opened a front against him,” Patra said.

“The Municipal Court has served a notice to the mosque 45 times to produce the papers of legality, but they have submitted no papers. Congress still has the attitude of appeasement. If Rahul Gandhi meets Ilhan Omar, then obviously he will have affection towards illegal mosques and there would be lathi-charge against Hindus. Ilhan Omar is not going to say that illegal mosques should be removed. The BJP is against the lathi-charge and the action taken against women too… ‘Hindu par lathi-charge aur avaidh masjid ka recharge, yeh nahi chalega’,” he added. (ANI)

Nagamangala in Karnataka

K’taka: 52 Arrested In Nagamangala After Riot Over Ganesh Procession Stone-Pelting

52 people were taken into custody and a holiday has been declared for educational institutions on Thursday in Nagamangala in Karnataka’s Mandya district following riots that broke out over allegations of stone pelting at a Ganpati immersion procession on Wednesday, as per Karnataka Home Minister G Parmeshwar.

“Yesterdays Nagamangala incident shouldn’t have happened. But fortunately, no injuries have happened. The situation is under control. During the procession, there was a stone pelting. Later vehicles were set on fire. No harm has happened. SP, IGP at the spot. There is peace now. In response, the stone pelting took place. I request that you not give publicity to such an incident. 52 arrested from both the groups,” Parmeshwar said.

As per the Superintendent of Police of Mandya, Mallikarjun Baladandi, the incident took place when the Ganapati procession stopped and started dancing in front of a Dargh for five to seven minutes. Following this, the people from the other group of people came and told the procession to leave, which resulted in a word exchange but the police cleared the situation between these two groups.

This led to the group who were part of the Ganpati procession holding a protest in front of the Nagamangala station, blaming the police for not allowing them to continue with their procession. The police tried to convince the group and also allowed them to continue with their Ganesh immersion procession, SP Baladandi added.

Baladandi further said that during that time many from both sides gathered and threw stones at each other and the police had to interfere again. When the groups were returning, they set shops and bikes on fire.

As per Baladandi, seven bikes and six small shops were burnt and a total of 15 bikes and a car were slightly damaged during the whole incident.

The situation was later taken under complete control by the police and officials were on duty and doing parades in all streets, SP Baladandi added.

CT Ravi, BJP MLC criticised the state government claiming that the miscreants had indulged in stone throwing at the Ganesh procession as they knew the state government would save them.

“In Nagamangala Mandya, communal Muslims threw stones, slippers on Ganesha procession and more than 25 shops were set on fire. All this is a planned incident, last year as well on the procession of the ganesha procession, they tried to create a riot, its a clear this year they planned and created this riot. Though police had information its their negligence. These communal goons are confident that their saver government is in power, that’s why they are doing such things. I demand strict action against those who threw stones on procession. Detaining those who went to ask for justice is an unacceptable crime. An investigation under the supervision of senior officers must be conducted,” he said.

The police have imposed prohibitory orders in Nagamangala to control the situation in the town.

“Prohibitory orders were imposed in Mandya district’s Nagamangala after a group of miscreants set shops on fire, and two police staff were injured. I have no information related to the machete or other weapons used in the clash. An investigation is underway. We are verifying the reasons for the instigation; our officers are on duty. We have detained a few people and a search is going on. Restriction orders will continue,” said the Inspector General of Police of South Division, MB Boralingaiah South Division. (ANI)

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seeking bail

SC To Deliver Verdict On Kejriwal’s Bail Pleas On Sept 13

The Supreme Court will deliver its verdict on Friday regarding the pleas filed by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seeking bail and challenging the Delhi High Court order upholding his arrest by the CBI in a corruption case stemming from the alleged excise policy scam.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan will deliver the judgement on September 13.

The apex court had reserved the verdict on September 5 after hearing counsels representing Kejriwal and CBI.

During the hearing of the case, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing for CBI, had objected to Kejriwal for not approaching the trial court for bail.

Kejriwal had directly approached the Delhi High Court for bail and then moved to the apex court.

“He approached the High Court without going to the Sessions Court. This is my preliminary objection. On merits, trial court could have seen it first. High Court was made to see merits and it can only be in exceptional cases. In ordinary cases, sessions court has to be approached first,” ASG had told the bench.

Raju had said Kejriwal seems to be an “extraordinary person” who requires different approach. “He is an influential political personality. All other ‘aam aadmis’ have to go to session court,” ASG had added.

Raju had further said that if Kejriwal comes out on bail, witnesses will turn hostile.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Kejriwal, had told the bench that the Supreme Court had released him twice- once in May to campaign for election and second time he was granted interim bail in the case registered by the Enforcement Directorate in the excise policy case.

CBI arrested Kejriwal on June 26 even though no arrest ever happened in two years, he had said, adding that it was a case of insurance arrest.

Singhvi had further said that Kejriwal is not a threat to society; he is not a hardened criminal.

The top court was hearing plea of Kejriwal against his arrest and a separate plea seeking bail in the case.

On August 5, the Delhi High Court upheld the arrest of the Chief Minister as “legal.” It had dismissed Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest, saying it was only after sufficient evidence was collected and sanction was obtained in April 2024 that the CBI proceeded with further probe against him.

The High Court had said there was no malice in the acts of the CBI, which demonstrated how Kejriwal could influence witnesses who could muster the courage to depose only after his arrest.

It had said Kejriwal is not an ordinary citizen but a distinguished recipient of the Magsaysay Award and the convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party.

“The control and the influence which he has on the witnesses is prima facie borne out from the fact that these witnesses could muster the courage to be a witness only after the arrest of the petitioner, as highlighted by the special prosecutor,” it had said in it’s order.

Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21, 2024, in connection with a money laundering probe relating to alleged irregularities in the now-cancelled Delhi excise policy 2021-22.

On June 26, 2024, AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by CBI while he was in custody of the Enforcement Directorate in the excise case. (ANI)
