GOAT Actress Parvathy Nair

‘GOAT’ Actress Parvathy Nair Booked For ‘Harassing’ House Help

Actress Parvathy Nair, who starred alongside Thalapathy Vijay in ‘GOAT’, is under investigation for allegedly assaulting and confining a worker named Subash Chandra Bose.

A case has been registered against the actress and five others under sections 296(b), 115(2), and 351(2) BNS following a complaint by Bose.

According to DSR copy, Bose, who worked as a helper at KJR Studios, was also asked to do domestic work at Parvathy Nair’s residence in 2022.

During that time, several items, including a laptop, watch, camera, and mobile phone, went missing from Nair’s house, after which the actress filed a complaint against Bose over suspected theft allegations.

However, Bose has now come forward to share his side of the story.

Bose alleges that after his release, when he returned to work at KJR Studios, Parvathy Nair came to the studio and slapped him, while the other five verbally abused him.

Bose filed a complaint at Teynampet Police Station; however, when no action was taken, he approached the Saidapet 19th MM Court.

Based on Saidapet Magistrate Court orders, an FIR has been registered against Parvathy Nair and others, and investigations in this matter are underway.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Nair was last seen in ‘GOAT’ opposite Vijay. (ANI)

Gaza Ghaziabad

Quad Leaders Express Concerns Over Humanitarian Crisis In Gaza

The Quad countries expressed deep concerns over the “raging war” in Ukraine and the “humanitarian crisis” in Gaza, while affirming support for adherence to international law and respect for principles of the UN Charter, including territorial integrity, sovereignty of all states, and peaceful resolution of disputes.

Expressing “deepest concern” over the war in Ukraine, the four countries underscored the importance of upholding international law, and in line with the UN Charter.

“We express our deepest concern over the war raging in Ukraine including the terrible and tragic humanitarian consequences,” the declaration read.

They reiterated that “all states must refrain from the threat of or use of force against the territorial integrity and sovereignty or political independence of any state.”

The four countries also noted the negative impacts of the war in Ukraine with regard to global food and energy security, especially for developing and least developed countries. “In the context of this war, we share the view that the use, or threat of use, of nuclear weapons is unacceptable.”

The Quad nations stated that they share great interest in achieving peace and stability in West Asia.

They expressed ‘unequivocal condemnation’ of the October 7 terror attacks, while also stating that the large-scale loss of civilian lives and the ‘humanitarian crisis’ in Gaza is “unacceptable.”

They affirmed the imperative of securing the release of all hostages held by Hamas, and emphasized that the deal to release hostages would bring an “immediate and prolonged ceasefire” in Gaza. They also underscored the urgent need to significantly increase deliveries of life-saving humanitarian assistance throughout Gaza as well as the crucial need to prevent regional escalation.

“We urge all parties to comply with international law, including international humanitarian law, as applicable,” the joint statement read.

Welcoming the UNSC resolution, the Quad nations urged all parties concerned to work “immediately and steadily” toward the release of all hostages and an immediate ceasefire.

“We call on all parties to take every feasible step to protect the lives of civilians including aid workers, and facilitate the rapid, safe and unimpeded humanitarian relief to civilians. We also encourage other countries, including those in the Indo-Pacific, to increase their support in order to address the dire humanitarian need on the ground. We underscore that the future recovery and reconstruction of Gaza should be supported by the international community,” the statement added.

The Quad leaders expressed their commitment to two-state solution, which ensures a sovereign, viable and independent Palestinian while also taking into account Israel’s “legitimate security concerns.”

While underscoring the need to prevent the conflict from escalating, they also voiced against Israeli expansion of settlements and “violent extremisms on all sides.”

“We remain committed to a sovereign, viable and independent Palestinian state taking into account Israel’s legitimate security concerns as part of a two-state solution that enables both Israelis and Palestinians to live in a just, lasting, and secure peace. Any unilateral actions that undermine the prospect of a two-state solution, including Israeli expansion of settlements and violent extremism on all sides, must end. We underscore the need to prevent the conflict from escalating and spilling over in the region,” the joint statement added.

Anura Kumara Dissanayaka

Anura Dissanayake To Be Sri Lanka’s New Prez

Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the leader of National People’s Power, is leading the presidential polls in Sri Lanka, as per early trends on Sunday, the Daily Mirror reported.

Polling was held on Saturday from 7 am to 4 pm local time in 22 electoral districts.

As per the last trends, Dissanayake has got 49.8 per cent votes while Sajith Premadasa, leader of Samagi Jana Balawegaya, got 25.8% of the votes, followed by the incumbent president and leader of the United National Party, Ranil Wickremesinghe, who mustered 16.4% of the votes.

Ali Sabry, Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs said, “After a long and arduous campaign, the results of the election are now clear. Though I heavily campaigned for President Ranil Wickremasinghe, the people of Sri Lanka have made their decision, and I fully respect their mandate for Anura Kumara Dissanayake. In a democracy, it is crucial to honor the will of the people, and I do so without hesitation. I extend my sincere congratulations to Mr. Dissanayake and his team. Leading a country is no easy task, and I genuinely hope that their leadership brings Sri Lanka the peace, prosperity, and stability it so deeply deserves. The challenges they will face are immense, and I trust they will reflect on the lessons of the past–both the successes and failures of those who have held power before them. History teaches us that the real challenge is not in winning an election, but in governing wisely and staying true to the needs of the people. Too often, those who have won elections in the past lost sight of the promises they made and missed the opportunity to bring real change. I hope Mr. Dissanayake and his team learn from these past mistakes and lead with a commitment to transparency, integrity, and the long-term good of the country. I wish Mr. Dissanayake and his team every success in their efforts to lead Sri Lanka forward.”

As Sri Lanka continues to recover from the devastating economic crisis of 2022, the people of the island nation, who have been bearing the brunt of the strict austerity measures, voted in the first elections after the crisis.

The crisis, which led to widespread food and fuel shortages, prompted Sri Lanka’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to flee the country in 2022. The economic policy of Rajapaksa, followed by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, is believed to have led to the worst economic crisis in the island nation.

Incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe, a six-time prime minister, assumed office as interim president in July 2022 following Rajapaksa’s removal, is now seeking re-election. (ANI)

No Dialogue With Pak Till Terrorism Is Eliminated: Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Sunday that the central government will not hold any conversation with Pakistan until terrorism is eliminated.

Addressing an election rally in Nowshera in the run-up to the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, Shah stressed against revoking Article 370 in the valley as demanded by the opposition, including the National Conference and Congress.

“Farooq Abdullah says that they will bring back Article 370. Farooq Sahab, nobody can bring back Article 370. Now, bunkers are not needed because no one can dare to fire bullets. ‘Agar wahan see goli aayi to goli ka jawab gole se diya jayega’. They want to bring back Shiekh Abdullah’s flag. Only our tricolour will wave in Jammu and Kashmir. Terrorism continued in Jammu and Kashmir for 30 years, curfew was imposed in Jammu and Kashmir for 3000 days in 30 years, 40,000 people were killed. Farooq Sahab, where were you during those days? Let me tell you, when Kashmir was burning, Farooq Sahib was comfortably holidaying in London,” Shah said.

“They want us to have a dialogue with Pakistan. Let me be clear, we will not hold conversations or dialogue with Pakistan till terrorism is eliminated. They want to free the terrorists from jails. Modiji came, and we wiped out the terrorists one by one. No terrorist or stone pelter will be freed from jail. BJP assures you, no terrorist will walk free in Jammu and Kashmir!,” he added.

Shah highlighted the reservation issue raised by the opposition and alleged that the Congress, NC, and PDP “deprived” reservation to those living in the hilly regions, adding that PM Modi ensured reservation despite.

“Congress, NC, has said that we will reconsider the reservation given to those in hilly regions, tribals, Dalits, or OBC communities. Rahul Gandhi goes to America and says that now that they have developed, they do not need reservations. Rahul Baba, we will not let you remove the reservation. The Congress, NC, and PDP had snatched the right to reservation of those living in the hilly regions for 70 years. It was their decision not to give reservations to the hill people. Modiji said, Congress, NC, and PDP can do whatever they want to do. We will give reservations to the hill people,” he said.

“When reservation was given to the hill people, Farooq Sahib started provoking the Gurjar brothers here that your reservation will be taken away. I had promised in Rajouri that the reservation for Gujjar Bakarwal will not be reduced even by one per cent and they will get a reservation, and we kept that promise. Congress, NC, and PDP deprived you of your reservation rights for years,” Shah added.

First phase of voting was completed in Jammu and Kashmir on September 18 with a voter turnout of 61.13 percent registered across 24 constituencies in seven districts, as per the Election Commission. The second and third phase will be held on September 25 and October 5 respectively. Vote counting will be conducted on October 8 along with the counting of votes in Haryana. (ANI)

Arvind Kejriwal

Not Here To Earn Money: Kejriwal

Former Delhi CM and Aam Aadmi Party National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said that he resigned because he has no greed for CM’s chair and had joined the politics for the country.

Arvind Kejriwal asserted that he is not a politician and the allegations have affected him.

Addressing ‘Janta ki Adalat’ at Jantar Mantar , Kejriwal said, “I resigned because I did not come here (in politics) to do corruption. I don’t have any greed for CM’s chair. I did not come here to earn money. I used the work in Income Tax, I could’ve earned crores if I wanted to earn money. I came in politics for country, for Bharat Mata, to change country’s politics.”

“These politician do not care about allegations, they got thick skin, I am not a politician. I do care when the BJP calls me a thief or corrupt. Today I’m heartbroken and that’s why I resigned.” Kejriwal added.

Kejriwal further asserted that he only ‘earned’ respect and do not even has a house of his own in Delhi.

“I will leave the CM’s bungalow in a few days, I don’t even have a house. I have earned only love in ten years, the result of which is that I am getting calls from so many people asking me to take my house. After the Shraadh is over, at the beginning of Navratri, I will leave the house and come and stay at the house of one of you,” he added.

Launching a scathing attack on BJP, Kejriwal said, “We were running the government honestly, we made electricity and water free, made treatment free for people, made education excellent. However, Modi ji started thinking that if he wanted to win against them, he would have to attack their honesty and then hatched a conspiracy to prove Kejriwal, Sisodia and AAP dishonest and put each and every leader in jail.”

Kejriwal further asked the people in ‘Janata Darbar’ whether they think he is honest or not.

“I want people to tell me if I am honest or dishonest, if I were dishonest, would I be able to give electricity for free? Would I be able to build schools? I wanna know if people think I am the thief or if the people who put me behind bars are the thieves.” Kejriwal said.

Kejriwal further questioned RSS, while targeting PM Modi and BJP.

“I want to ask Mohan Bhagwat ji five questions- the way Modi ji is breaking parties and bringing down governments across the country by luring them or threatening them with ED and CBI, is this correct?; Modi ji has included the most corrupt leaders in his party, whom he himself called corrupt, do you agree with such politics?; BJP was born from the womb of RSS, it is the responsibility of RSS to ensure that BJP does not go astray, have you ever stopped Modi ji from doing wrong things?” Kejriwal said.

Kejriwal, during his resignation, had announced that he would not resume as the CM until the people of Delhi declared him “honest.” He has also called for advancing polls in the national capital to November this year, ahead of the scheduled February elections.

Kejriwal announced his resignation after he was released from the Tihar jail after being granted bail by the Supreme Court in a corruption case related to the alleged Delhi Excise Policy scam. (ANI)

Making Sense of the ‘One Nation One Election’ Model

This summer when India held its gargantuan parliamentary elections, in seven phases and spread over more than 40 days, the cost of holding them were estimated at ₹1.35 lakh crore. For the sake of comparison, India’s real GDP or GDP at constant prices is estimated at Rs 173.82 lakh crore. Another comparison: the spending on the 2020 US presidential election was estimated at Rs 1.2 lakh crore.

In the world’s most populous country with nearly a billion eligible voters, holding elections is a costly affair. Countrywide parliamentary elections like this year’s are hugely expensive but so are state and union territory assembly elections. This year, eight states have either already held elections or will do so in the remaining months.

Currently, assembly elections are being held in the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir in three phases. Elections in J&K are being held for the first time since the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019. The previous assembly elections in the erstwhile state were held in 2014. In a sensitive region such as J&K, the cost of holding elections can be higher because of security concerns.

The spiraling costs of holding multiple elections is one of the reasons why India’s government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is serious about its “One Nation One Election” proposal. On September 2, the government issued a notification constituting a high-level committee, headed by the President of India, to examine the issue of simultaneous elections.

Costs are certainly one concern that the government has. The sheer size and scale of an election in India can be staggering. In the 2024 parliamentary elections, approximately 12-15 million polling staff and security personnel were involved; there were more than a million polling stations; hundreds of thousands of civil servants were deployed for election management; and thousands of election observers and micro-observers were needed.

Besides human resources, equipment was required. Around 2 million Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs); a similar number of Voter-Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines had to be deployed; and millions of vials of indelible ink were used to mark voters’ fingers after they had cast their ballots.

Then there were costs such as transportation: thousands of vehicles for transporting personnel and equipment; and helicopters and boats for reaching remote areas.

A general election is held on a national level and, understandably, the cost of holding it is enormous. But state elections are also expensive. India’s largest state, Uttar Pradesh, has nearly 200 million people but even a relatively small state such as Mizoram in the north-eastern region has a population of more than a million. With numbers such as that the logistics can be complex and the costs huge.

The proposal of the Modi government is for holding simultaneous elections for both the Lok Sabha (lower house of the Indian Parliament) and all state legislative assemblies.

What would this mean? The proposal suggests synchronising the election cycles so that voting for both national and state legislatures happens at the same time, typically once every five years.

The government argues that conducting simultaneous elections could significantly reduce the overall cost of organising multiple separate elections by eliminating duplication of the resources used. It could also streamline the election process and reduce the burden on administrative and security forces that have to be deployed to ensure that the elections are held fairly, peacefully, and smoothly.

Less frequent elections might allow governments to focus more on governance and policy implementation rather than constantly being in “election mode.” The government and supporters of the concurrent election model think that it could reduce the frequency of the model code of conduct coming into effect and, thereby, slowing down government decision-making and implementation.

Yet, the proposal has stoked criticism, particularly from the Opposition and from regional political parties, which play a significant role in Indian politics in the states.

A model for simultaneous elections could undermine local issues that voters have while voting in state assembly elections. State-level issues might not get the importance they deserve and could get overshadowed by national narratives during elections.

Also, while holding one huge election across the nation, encompassing parliament as well as the states, could reduce duplication of resources and time spent, it could still be a logistical nightmare.

There are 543 Members of Parliament (MPs) that voters elect in the general elections. If all of India’s 28 states and union territories (UTs) are taken together, there are more than 4,000 seats in legislative assemblies across all the states and UTs. Organising simultaneous elections for all these assemblies and parliament can require several phases and a complex plan that can conceivably be a daunting exercise.

The greater concerns relate to issues such as provisions in India’s Constitution, which currently allows state assemblies to be dissolved mid-term (before the five-year term is over) if needed. If elections are to be held simultaneously, this provision of the Constitution would have to be significantly amended.

Less frequent elections may also reduce the opportunities for voters to express their views and opinions on a government’s performance and, hence, as some argue, curb democratic rights.

In India’s federal structure, Indians often vote differently in state elections than they do in the general elections. Opponents of the one election model are apprehensive about a prevailing national mood or sentiment disproportionately affecting the outcomes at both levels and possibly leading to a less diverse representation.

The Opposition’s View

Not surprisingly, India’s Opposition parties have argued that the proposed system could undermine India’s federal structure by aligning state politics too closely with national politics. They fear it may lead to the dominance of national issues over local ones, potentially marginalising state-specific concerns.

There’s also concern that simultaneous elections might benefit larger national parties over regional ones. Smaller parties often rely on state-level issues to gain traction, which could be overshadowed in a combined election.

Some opposition members have expressed concerns that aligning all elections could concentrate too much power, potentially leading to autocratic tendencies.

Yet, the signals are clear that One Nation One Election will become a reality. Last week, when the high-level committee referred to above unanimously recommended the proposal, Prime Minister Modi posted on X: “The Cabinet has accepted the recommendations of the High-Level Committee on Simultaneous Elections. I compliment our former President, Shri Ram Nath Kovind Ji for spearheading this effort and consulting a wide range of stakeholders. This is an important step towards making our democracy even more vibrant and participative.”

As for those not in favour of the proposal, they can probably seek solace in the phonetic abbreviation of the new system: “ONOE”.

Pakistan: Dengue Outbreak Worsens In Rawalpindi

The dengue outbreak in Rawalpindi continues to worsen, with a notable increase in cases reported across the district. Potohar Town, particularly Chak Jalal Din, has emerged as one of the hardest-hit areas.

In response to the alarming rise in cases, health authorities have deployed a mobile health unit to Chak Jalal Din to assist in combating the spread of the virus. In this locality alone, 226 individuals have tested positive for dengue fever, with 44 new cases confirmed within the last 24 hours, the Express Tribune reported.

Despite the District Health Authority’s ongoing anti-dengue campaigns, efforts to contain the spread of the dengue-carrying mosquito appear insufficient. The number of hospitalized patients with confirmed dengue cases has now reached 96, with the total number of cases reported across the district standing at 543.

Potohar Town has seen the most significant rise in new cases, recording 25 infections within the past 20 hours. Meanwhile, five cases have surfaced in municipal corporation areas, another five in Rawalpindi Cantonment, three in Chaklala, and two in the rural areas of Potohar, adding to the growing concern.

Other health issues also remain a concern in the region. This season, authorities have recorded two cases of Congo fever and 651 cases of malaria, although there have been no reports of monkeypox in the district to date, reported the Express Tribune.

At the mobile health unit set up in Chak Jalal Din, authorities conducted examinations on 71 patients. Among these, 67 patients underwent Complete Blood Count (CBC) tests, two had FT tests, three received Renal Function Tests (RFTs), and 14 were tested for their blood sugar levels.

Authorities are taking legal action against individuals and businesses found responsible for creating breeding grounds for dengue mosquitoes. To date, 2,826 FIRs have been registered against violators. Additionally, 808 buildings have been sealed, 2,226 challans issued, and fines totaling PKR 14.49 million have been imposed for repeated breaches of regulations.

Chief Executive of the District Health Authority, Asif Arbab Niazi, stated that the government’s response has been robust, but urged citizens to remain vigilant.

“The public must continue to take precautions until October 15,” he said, stressing the need to prevent stagnant water accumulation, keep windows and doors shut in the evening, wear long-sleeved clothing, and regularly use mosquito repellent. (ANI)

Death Toll Rises To 37 After Israeli Strike In Beirut

Death Toll Rises To 37 After Israeli Strike In Beirut

At least 37 people, including three children and seven women, have lost their lives in an Israeli air attack in Beirut’s southern suburbs, with the death toll continuing to rise, AL Jazeera reported citing Lebanon’s health minister’s statement

The strike, which occurred during Friday’s rush hour, targeted two buildings in the Lebanese capital’s Dahiya district, also leaving over 60 people injured and 17 others still trapped under the rubble, according to Health Minister Firass Abiad.

Minister of Public Works and Transport Ali Hamieh told Al Jazeera Arabic that the bombing of a residential building constituted a “war crime” and that Israel was “dragging the region into a war”.

Israel’s military said it carried out a “targeted strike” against senior members of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Forces in the Beirut suburb. An Israeli military spokesperson said on Saturday that “at least 16 Hezbollah militants” were killed in the attack.

Hezbollah confirmed that two of its top commanders, Ibrahim Aqil and Ahmad Mahmoud Wahabi, along with 12 other members, were killed.

In July, an Israeli air strike killed Fuad Shukr, the group’s top military commander.

Further, the Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi said Lebanon had entered a “decisive” phase after the attack on the residential suburb, telling a news conference on Saturday that everything must be done to prevent further violations of Lebanese territory and avoid further deterioration of the security situation.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Israel was committing “shameless crimes” against children, not fighters. He also called for “inner strength” among Muslims to eliminate the “malignant cancerous tumour” from Palestine.

A series of deadly incidents has escalated tensions in Lebanon, leaving dozens dead and thousands injured. On Tuesday and Wednesday, explosions from thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies killed at least 39 people and wounded nearly 3,000 others. The Lebanese government has blamed Israel for these incidents.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army reported on Saturday it was “striking targets” of Hezbollah in northern Lebanon, with Israeli media reporting the army was launching dozens of strikes on Saturday afternoon.

“Israeli officials say they have launched at least 80 raids on weapons installations belonging to Hezbollah and in turn, Hezbollah launched at least 45 rockets on northern Israel,” Al Jazeera reporter said from Beirut.

“This exchange is the most intense since the two sides started engaging in cross-border fire on October 8, a day after Israel began its latest war on Gaza,” she added. (ANI)
