Reel Makers Have Created a Mess in Our Online & Public Spaces

‘Reel-Makers Have Created a Mess in Our Online & Public Spaces’

Versha Singh, a Delhi-based educator and artist, says reel-makers are a public nuisance who throw caution to the wind for two minutes of fame. Her views:

In this technology driven world, everything is available on a single click. There is a lot of content for the audience to consume. In recent years, the rise of short-form video content has taken the internet by storm. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube have given birth to a new generation of creators known as ‘reel-makers’. While they may entertain and amuse, most of these reel-makers are increasingly becoming a nuisance in online and public spaces.

The constant barrage of loud, attention-grabbing videos can be overwhelming and troublesome. Many reels prioritise style over substance, sacrificing meaningful content for clicks and fame. This superficial approach contributes to the audience being shaken out of their wits. But it is not only about the lack of context in the content that we consume but also about serious matters such as invasion of privacy, cyberbullying and misinforming the audience.

More than15.7% of students today face online bullying. This is one of the highest rates of cyberbullying globally. There also have been instances when reel-makers have invaded the privacy of other people. Misinformation too has been an effect of reel-making. It perhaps is the most lethal of all. For the sake of views and likes, reel-makers spread rumours; so much so that some people have started regarding reels as ‘online media’. It comes as no surprise then that this has eroded people’s trust in online journalism and media and has made everyone turn back to print media.

Now while that may have its pros and cons, it is absolutely undeniable that reel-makers have ensued chaos upon our society. From feeding young minds inappropriate content and setting a different standard as being ‘cool’, the reel-makers have harmed the young generation the most that considers the internet and such videos as being real and authentic.

ALSO READ: ‘Risky Reel Creators Must Be Banned From Social Media’

When people say that social media has ruined this generation, it is the segment of reels they target. It has given people access to all sorts of content – appropriate and inappropriate- and there is no way that the content can be filtered. Social media was supposed to make us aware and updated, which it did to some extent, but then again this is too high a price to pay for a bit of decent content.

Everything has a limit but it seems that this phenomenon does not apply to reels and reel-makers. Trends come and go like they never existed. It has set an artificial living standard for everyone; and if anyone does not keep up with this online show-off standard then they are simply termed as failures/losers.

All this adversely affects the mental health and wellbeing of people, especially the teens and young adults. The line between right and wrong is blurred; it is only socially accepted and socially secluded. No one wants to be left out. There is a mad race to grab attention and to be seen. Anything will work – from vulgar to gross to obnoxious to dangerous.

This also gives rise to the problem of peer pressure. Let us amalgamate our opinions and entertainment in a way that it does not mislead anyone. It’s time to acknowledge the darker side of reel-makers and their impact on our online culture. While entertainment has its value, let’s not forget the importance of responsible content creation and respectful online engagement.

Pak Overjoyed With Congress-NC Manifesto: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday ripped into the Congress-National Conference partnership in Jammu and Kashmir accusing the political alliance of pandering to Pakistan’s interests.

Addressing a public rally in Katra the Prime Minister suggested that the Congress-NC alliance is being applauded in Pakistan. PM Modi used the term ‘Balle Balle’ to note that the neighbouring country is very happy with the manifesto of the Congress-NC alliance and has openly extended its support.

The Prime Minister’s remarks follow Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khwaja Asif statement in an interview in which he said that Pakistan and the NC-Congress alliance were on the same page on the restoration of Article 370.

PM Modi warned voters in Reasi against voting for the Congress-NC, saying that if the alliance comes into power, Jammu and Kashmir will see bloodshed due to terrorism.

He said that Congress-NC wants to implement Pakistan’s agenda in Jammu and Kashmir.

“We will not let Pakistan’s agenda be imposed in Jammu and Kashmir. No power in the world can bring back Article 370 in J&K.” PM Modi said.

“Every vote given to Congress will implement the manifesto of the PDP and NC. They want to bring back Article 370. This means they want bloodshed in the valley again. The Congress-NC alliance is being applauded in Pakistan. Pakistan is very happy with the Congress-NC manifesto and has openly extended its support. There may not be enthusiasm about the Congress-National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir, but the neighbouring country (Pakistan) is very enthusiastic about them. Pakistan is going ‘Balle Balle’ (having a great time) over the Congress-National Conference alliance. Pakistan’s Defence Minister has openly come out in support of the Congress-NC alliance. He says their agenda is the same as that of Pakistan,” the Prime Minister said.

Earlier speaking on Geo News to senior journalist Hamid Mir in a show Capital Talk, the Pakistan Defence Minister was asked whether Pakistan and the National Conference-Congress alliance are on the same page on the restoration of Article 370 and 35A in Jammu and Kashmir.

Khwaja Asif replied, “Absolutely. Even our demand is also the same…”

The Pakistan Minister also claimed that Article 370 could return should the NC-Congress alliance come to power in JK.

“I think it is possible. Currently, the National Conference and Congress have very big importance over there. The population of the valley has been motivated a lot on this issue and I believe, there is a chance that the Conference (National Conference) will come to power. They have made this an election issue that the status of Jammu and Kashmir should be restored,” Asif told Geo News. (ANI)

Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu

FIR Against Union Minister Bittu Over Remarks Against Rahul

An FIR has been registered against Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu for his alleged remarks against Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over the statements the latter made in the US regarding Sikhs, police said on Thursday.

The Minister of State for Railways had said that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is not an Indian and if there should be an award to catch the number one terrorist, it should be on the Congress leader.

The case was filed at High Grounds police station, Bengaluru based on a complaint by one of the officer-bearers of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.

The BJP leader attacked the Lok Sabha LoP for his remarks on Sikhs during his US visit and said that the Leader of Opposition does not love his country.

“Rahul Gandhi is not an Indian, he has spent most of his time outside. He does not love his country much because he goes abroad and says everything in the wrong way. The people who are most wanted, separatists, and experts in making bombs, guns, and shells, have appreciated what Rahul Gandhi has said. The enemies of the country who try to blow up planes, trains, and roads, are in support of Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi is the country’s number one terrorist. The biggest enemy of the country whom the agencies should catch is Rahul Gandhi today,” he said.

“Rahul Gandhi will not become a terrorist because of your statement. The people of the country know about your mentality, your intelligence, your knowledge, and how ungrateful a man is,” he added.

Speaking in Virginia, US, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha said that fight is about whether a Sikh, is going to be allowed to wear a turban in India and would be able to visit a Gurdwara.

“First of all, you have to understand what the fight is about. Fight is not about politics. It is superficial. What is your name? The fight is about whether…he as a Sikh is going to be allowed to wear his turban in India. Or he as a Sikh is going to be allowed to wear a kada in India. Or a Sikh is going to be able to go to Gurdwara. That’s what the fight is about and not just for him, for all religions,” he said. (ANI)

Atishi CM

Atishi To Take Oath As CM On Sept 21

Aam Aadmi Party on Thursday said that the party’s MLA, Atishi, will take oath as the Chief Minister of Delhi on September 21.

“Atishi will take oath as the Chief Minister of Delhi on September 21, other ministers will also take their oaths alongside her,” the Aam Aadmi Party said in a statement.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi, who has staked claim to become the next Delhi Chief Minister, said on Tuesday that she is happy about the trust posed in her by the outgoing CM Arvind Kejriwal but also sad that he has resigned from his post.

Atishi told reporters that she will work to bring back Kejriwal as Chief Minister after the assembly polls, which would be held in the next few months.

“First of all, I would like to thank the popular CM of Delhi, AAP national convener, and my guru – Arvind Kejriwal. He gave me such a huge responsibility and trusted me for it. This can be done only in AAP, only under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal, that a first-time politician becomes the CM of a state. I come from an ordinary family. Had I been in any other party, perhaps I would not have been given even an election ticket,” Atishi said.

Atishi, 43, will be the third woman chief minister of Delhi after Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit. She is a prominent AAP leader and served as Advisor to Manish Sisodia when he was Education Minister. AAP leaders said she played a pivotal role in revamping the state of education in government-run schools in the national capital.

Atishi joined AAP at the time of its inception and was a key member of the Manifesto Drafting Committee of the party for the 2013 Assembly election. She has also served as a party spokesperson.

She represents the Kalkaji constituency in the Delhi Assembly and holds the highest number of portfolios in the Delhi government.

Atishi was appointed to the Delhi cabinet in March 2023 in the face of difficulties faced by AAP following arrest of Manish Sisodia in the excise policy case. He has also been released on bail in the case.

Atishi will have her task cut out as she will be key face of AAP as it prepares for assembly polls with aim to come to power again in the national capital.

AAP has demanded early polls to the Delhi assembly. The last assembly polls were held in early 2020.

Earlier on Tuesday, Kejriwal, who is also Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor, resigned as Delhi Chief Minister. (ANI)

Abdullahs, Muftis, Gandhis Have Given Only Fear, Anarchy To J-K: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday targeted the Abdullahs, Muftis, and Gandhis, saying they have brought only fear and anarchy to Jammu and Kashmir, and added that the region will no longer remain under their control as the local youth are now challenging them.

He also accused these three families of believing that it is their birthright to grab power by any means and deprive the people of Jammu and Kashmir of their legitimate rights.

Addressing a public rally in Srinagar PM Modi said, “The three families think that it is their birthright to capture power by any means and then loot you all. Their political agenda has been to deprive the people of Jammu and Kashmir of their legitimate rights. They have given only fear and anarchy to Jammu and Kashmir but now Jammu and Kashmir will no longer be in the grip of these three families…Now our youth here is challenging them. The youth whom they did not allow to progress have come out against them.”

Modi further criticized Congress, the National Conference (NC), and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for creating divisions and asserted that the BJP is uniting everyone and bridging the gap between ‘Dil’ and Delhi.

“Congress-NC-PDP just did the division. But BJP is uniting everyone. We are bridging the distance between ‘Dil’ and Delhi.”

PM Modi claimed that the Abdullah, Mufti and Gandhi families have destroyed the youth’s faith in democracy, but now the youth are realizing that only their vote can bring real change.

“The three families here consider the politics of Jammu and Kashmir as their fiefdom. They do not want to let anyone else come forward except their own family. Otherwise, why did they stop the elections of the panchayat, BDC and DDC? They thought that through this, new people would emerge in politics and challenge their family regime. The result of their selfishness was that the youth here started losing faith in democracy. They felt that whether they cast their vote or not, these three families would definitely come to power. So much has changed now as compared to the earlier circumstances… The youth here have developed confidence that only their vote can bring about real change,” PM Modi said.

Jammu and Kashmir is voting for its 90-member assembly in three phases. The first phase of voting was held on September 18, the other two rounds will be held on September 25 and October 1. Counting to take place on October 8. (ANI)

Manipur Crisis Has Roots In Colonial Push For Evangelism

Manipur Crisis Has Roots In Colonial Push For Evangelism-II

In the previous columns of this article, we found out how the evangelical push in India’s north-eastern region was sponsored and facilitated by colonial authorities. And these activities continued even after India’s Independence, with tacit or active support from the country’s first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru. In this conclusive part, we shall uncover how proselytization took roots in North-East and the larger game-plan behind the upheaval in Manipur, Bangladesh and, to some extent, Myanmar.

As evangelists started their conversion things to the Northeast states of India below British rule, the scenario in Manipur was different from that in the other states. The Meiteis had a lengthy record of ruling the nation from historic times, and it remained below a Hindu king, originally now not coming below British manipulate in Assam. Eventually, the British conquered Manipur in 1891. However, the Hindu king remained in power, and the British agreed to maintain Christian evangelists out of Manipur.

William Pettigrew, a younger British missionary with the American Baptist Mission, in the end, acquired permission to set up a college in Imphal. However, he was once no longer allowed to preach Christianity. However, round 1894, Pettigrew was once granted permission to proceed his evangelical work in the hilly areas of Manipur, in particular amongst the Tangkhul tribes. Thus started the conversion of animistic tribes in Manipur to Christianity, done via more than a few baits, such as imparting Western clinical useful resources and education.

In 1901, Christians made up about eight per cent of Manipur’s population, whilst Hindus constituted around 60 per cent. By 1991, the Christian populace in Manipur had risen to 34.11 per cent, and by using 2011, it was once projected to be around forty one per cent. This sharp expansion in the Christianisation of the hill tribes resulted in a broad socio-political-cultural hole between the Christian tribes of the Hills and the Hindu Meiteis of the valley and has presently come to be a predominant supply of socio-political competition between the two communities.

Manipur has considered many ethnic conflicts because of the time of British rule, with a variety of revolts led by using the Naga and Kuki tribes below the colonial government. Like many borders in Northeast India, the hill areas of Manipur additionally had indistinct demarcations. When the British annexed Manipur in 1891, the hill areas had been made phase of the Imphal Valley, below the management of the Raja of Manipur. However, ordinary of their coverage of divide and rule, the British, because of this, separated parts of some hill ranges, such as the Chin Hills, Naga Hills, Cachar Hills, and Lushai Hills, hence dividing the hill communities by means of borders below the excuse of administrative and navy ease. Also, as the British furnished distinctive privileges to transformed tribes, the hilly areas that majorly transformed to Christianity have been a favoured lot, which opened up some other cracks between the communities residing in Manipur.

Despite formally permitting the hill areas into Imphal Valley below the Raja of Manipur’s manipulation in 1891, the British ensured that these areas remained underneath their de facto manipulation by using separate administrative tactics. This alternatively abnormal Valley-Hill administrative coverage of ‘living separate but together’ endured after 1947, with no modifications even after 1949 when the princely country of Manipur joined the Indian Union. This divisive administrative mechanism resulted in large socio-cultural and political fissures between the Meitei and Kuki communities.

Owing to these fissures created by the British, the hill tribes began a separatist motion in 1947 and demanded secession from Manipur. Unfortunately, the divisive video games instigated with the aid of the British persevered in free India. When land legal guidelines were enacted in Manipur in 1960, the hill areas were made an exception. In easy terms, the land legal guidelines of Manipur do now not follow the hill areas, exacerbating the current socio-political fissures.

In Manipur, the Meiteis are viewed as the majority and the most effective ethnic group. Despite British and later Nehru-backed evangelism, Hinduism, mostly practised by using the Meiteis, stays the faith of the majority and is viewed as the oldest faith in the state. Among the hill tribes, the Nagas and the Kukis are the two most important organizations and are generally Christian, whilst some nevertheless comply with normal animistic religions. Alongside these companies are the Meitei Pangals (Muslims), who are scattered throughout the hills and the valley.

The hostilities between these companies have a lengthy history, exacerbated by using the British via their separate administrative policies, a system that, unfortunately, persevered through the Indian authorities after independence. Manipur has viewed many conflicts, such as the Naga-Kuki war in 1993 and the Meitei-Pangal warfare in the same year. Meanwhile, tensions between the Meiteis and Nagas have simmered; however no longer actively erupted into conflict.

The majority of Meiteis, who represent almost 50 per cent of Manipur’s population, are predominantly Vaishnavites and generally stay in the valley, or they occupy solely one-tenth of the whole geographical place of Manipur. Due to divisive administrative policies, mainly regarding land ownership, Meiteis and different non-tribal corporations can’t buy land in the hills. This region, which includes nine-tenths of Manipur’s landmass, stays reserved for the Christian Scheduled Tribes.

Thus, the dominant crew in Manipur, the Meiteis, is unable to settle in the hills. With the current large-scale unlawful entries of Christian Kukis from Myanmar, there are serious worries about a demographic shift in the state, which is sure to have an impact on the Hindu Meitei community’s claims on Manipur adversely. This issue is why the Meiteis have persistently demonstrated a Scheduled Tribe (ST) reputation for their community, aiming to guard their heritage and ancestral land.

The modern fighting between the Hindu Meiteis and the Christian Kuki tribes used to be prompted by an order from the Manipur High Court directing the nation to advise Scheduled Tribe (ST) fame for the Meitei community. Another element exacerbating the struggle was once the arrest of Mark Haokip, a Kuki separatist leader. Because the Kukis are closely worried about unlawful poppy cultivation and drug trade, which generates good-sized revenue, a variety of Kuki tribal militant agencies are additionally inciting locals towards the government’s anti-drug measures, in addition to fuelling unrest in the state.

Manipur and the different northeastern states of India are seen as possible points within the golden triangle of a drug community involving Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos. Indeed, some cities in Manipur are already stated to have ended up necessary hubs for drug cultivation and change due to the Kuki-Chin population; the Kuki-dominated Churachandpur district in Manipur is regarded as one of the worst-affected areas.

Estimates recommend that nearly eighty per cent of the pills smuggled into India originate in Myanmar. Chinese drug cartels are allegedly worried about the drug alternate through Myanmar and are stated to manipulate the entry of capsules into India through the northeastern states. These drug cartels, many of which are managed by means of ethnic militant corporations in Myanmar, additionally fund terrorist things to do in India. The continuation of the drug change is vital for them to preserve their funding of terrorists in India and Myanmar.

Since the 2021 Myanmar coup, there has been a non-stop inflow of refugees into India from Myanmar, a majority of whom are the Christian Kuki-Chin-Zomi tribes. These unlawful immigrants have occupied covered areas and reserved forests, main to the institution of new villages. The authorities view this as a serious safety threat. An eviction power to get rid of these unlawful encroachments from covered woodland lands in hill areas has additionally led to clashes between the Kuki-Chin neighbourhood and the state.

In the meantime, the US has been searching for a strong base and hall, including Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Northeast India, for a long time. Their involvement appears to be in the shape of the appropriate pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, primarily considering the recent removal of Bangladesh’s democratically elected government, who, in her words, had been opposed to the establishment of this Christian country corridor.
