Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat joined the Congress

Vinesh, Bajrang Formally Joined Cong

Ahead of the upcoming Haryana Assembly election, Olympian wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat joined the Congress in a big boost to the party.

Punia and Phogat joined the party in the presence of ith Congress general secretary KC Venugopal, party leader Pawan Khera, Haryana Congress chief Udai Bhan and AICC in-charge of Haryana, Deepak Babaria.

After being inducted Vinesh Phogat said, “The fight is continuing, it hasn’t ended yet. It’s in Court. We will win that fight as well… With the new platform that we are getting today, we will work for the service of the nation.”

“….When we were being dragged on the road, all parties except BJP were with us. I feel proud that I have joined a party which stands with women and is ready to fight from ‘sadak to sansad’…” said the athlete.

Both the top wrestlers were part of protests by wrestlers over sexual harassment allegations against former BJP MP and then Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh last year.

“Today is a big day for the INC. It’s a proud moment for all of us as we welcome Vinesh Phogat ji and Bajrang Punia ji to our Congress family,” KC Venugopal said today.

Earlier today, both the wrestlers had called on Congress national President Mallikarjun Kharge at his residence in the national capital.

The development comes ahead of polling for 90-member Haryana Assembly scheduled for October 5 with counting of votes scheduled on October 8.

The wrestlers resigned from their respective positions in Northern Railways earlier in the day.

Punia won bronze at the Tokyo Games bronze medallist, while Vinesh Phogat became the first woman wrestler to reach the Olympics final.

Phogat announced her retirement from wrestling a short while after she was disqualified from the Paris Olympic Games after being found overweight by about 100 gm in her 50-kg category weigh-in.(ANI)

Governor CV Ananda Bose

People Want Action, Not An Alibi: WB Governer Over RG Kar case

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose, on Thursday targeted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led state government over the rape-murder of trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and said that the law is there but it not being implemented properly.

Governor Bose also alleged that a portion of the police is criminalised and politicized.

He said, “Parents (of the victim) have told me certain things which is very, very heart-breaking. They also gave to me in writing that I have taken up with the Home Minister. Within two days we started seeing action. Their feelings we understand. What they want is also justice. The entire Bengal society seeks justice. Justice will be done. Justice should be done. What I see in Bengal today, especially the administration is going from wrong to wrong. They should realize two wrongs, even if they are mutually contradictory, will not constitute one right.”

He further emphasized that the government has to act and it has to take the people in confidence.

“The wrongdoers should be brought to book. Punishment should be given. People should feel that they can expect justice from the government, now that feeling is not there. This is the condition of Bengal today- the law is there but it is not being implemented properly or certain people are given protective discrimination by law. The police, a portion of the police is criminalised, a portion is corrupt and a portion of it is politicised,” the Governor added.

The West Bengal Governor also warned the state government not to test the patience of the people.

“That’s where the people has come forward. I am sure that the voice of the people is the voice of the god. People want action, not an alibi for an action. Don’t test the patience of the people,” he said.

Earlier, BJP national spokesperson Amit Malviya cited a letter dated August 10 allegedly signed by former principal of RG Kar Hospital, Sandip Ghosh ordering renovation of the incident site a day after the trainee doctor was raped and murdered.

Malviya dubbed it as “explosive” as he alleged that the West Bengal government and the hospital lied regarding the date of renovation.

Malviya reiterated the demand of the Chief Minister’s resignation and alleged that “much of the evidence” have already been destroyed.

“Mamata Banerjee and Vineet Goyal must be subjected to polygraph test, to unearth the truth. The movement for justice will continue,” Malviya stated.

Leader of Opposition in West Bengal assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, on Thursday targeted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the alleged renovation order at RG Kar Hospital that was cited by BJP earlier.

“Mamata Banerjee’s people were saying that the renovation order (of the room near the seminar hall of RG Kar Hospital) was given to PWD before 9th August but today it has come to light that the order was received on August 10,” Suvendu Adhikari said.

The body of the trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of the hospital on August 9. The incident sparked nationwide protests. A civic volunteer was arrested shortly after. The CBI also arrested Dr Sandip Ghosh, for alleged financial misconduct at the medical establishment. (ANI)

Manish Sisodia

Teachers’ Salaries Should Be More Than IAS: AAP Sisodia

Former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi and Aam Aadmi Party leader Manish Sisodia calls for higher teacher salaries to build a developed India by 2047 and emphasises the crucial role of teachers in shaping India’s future.

As the chief guest, he urged that teachers’ salaries surpass those of IAS officers and Cabinet Secretaries, citing international examples of developed countries to stress that elevating the status of educators is key to achieving a developed India by 2047.

Chief guest Sisodia, along with other dignitaries, inaugurated the ‘Nigam Shikshak Samman Samaroh, 2024′ on Teachers’ Day at the Civic Centre by lighting the ceremonial lamp.

The event began with the national song, ‘Vande Mataram’, followed by a welcome speech from the Additional Commissioner of the Corporation.

The children then captivated the audience with a cultural performance. The program was presided over by MCD Mayor Shelly Oberoi, with Deputy Mayor Aaley Mohammad Iqbal, and Leader of the House Mukesh Goyal attending as special guests.

At the ‘Shikshak Samman Samaroh’, CM Manish Sisodia addressed the audience of teachers, and said “I extend my heartfelt thanks and respect to all the teachers present here. Wishing you all a very happy Teacher’s Day.”

Manish Sisodia, said, “For the past 15-20 days, I have been extremely busy. I always looked forward to Teacher’s Day during my tenure as Education Minister for 8-9 years, and I treated this day like a personal celebration. The day before yesterday, I received a call from Shelly Oberoi asking if I could make time for this event. I couldn’t resist and made every effort to be here with you on this important day.”

He continued, “It is my privilege to honour teachers on Teacher’s Day. It is, in fact, the reverse. By honouring a teacher, we feel that we are being given the honour. To stand on stage and hand over an award to a teacher may seem like a small gesture, but being able to do so on Teacher’s Day is the greatest honour one can receive.”

“I stand here today with pride, feeling fortunate that I have been given the opportunity, thanks to all of you, to honour some of our teachers. It is a matter of great pride for me,” said the former Delhi Education Minister.

Manish Sisodia further added that so much has been written and said about teachers in poetry and programs–they are truly amazing. When I speak of a teacher, I don’t only refer to those who teach but also to those who teach us how to learn. A teacher’s role is not limited to imparting knowledge and leaving us to figure out the rest. They teach us how to keep learning throughout life. This is why teachers hold such a crucial place in our lives.

“A doctor may treat a wound or an ailment, and once it is healed, we return to our normal activities. Similarly, a lawyer, a manager, or a journalist handles specific areas of our lives. But a teacher touches every aspect of life, all 360 degrees of it, and continues to influence us at every moment,” shared Manish Sisodia.

The former Education Minister mentioned, “There will never be a moment in life where I live in a way that hasn’t been influenced by what my teachers taught me. Until my last breath, I will continue to learn, and I will learn in the way my teachers taught me. This is why Teacher’s Day holds such great significance for me.”

The former Deputy CM shared, “Today, I have been given the opportunity to be here and share my thoughts. Over the past year and a half, I have faced some of the most challenging times of my life. However, I never found them to be truly difficult because, even when I used to sleep on a newspaper at Jantar Mantar during protests, I didn’t feel it was a struggle. In jail, too, I had a fan and a small cell, so it didn’t seem too hard.”

He further added that there were obstacles in the work he was doing here, and he mentions this because when we are in good conditions, we remember the lessons you taught us. But it is during difficult and trying times that your teachings are remembered the most. Especially the social and age group you deal with–teachers of 12th graders may not see immediate results from teaching mathematics, but the lessons taught by primary teachers are invaluable throughout life.

“Calculus may not have helped me, but the foundational education given in primary school has always been useful, especially in both good and tough times. This makes your role even more important to me. When I faced a difficult situation, I saw it as an opportunity. My teachers had taught me how to read, and since I didn’t have much time for reading in my political life, I embraced this challenge and spent the past year and a half reading a lot,” mentioned Manish Sisodia.

The former Deputy CM said that we look at history through the lens of war and economy, but we should also look at it through the history of education. Then only can we progress. The foundation is in your hands right now. The person who’s going to be 30-35 in 2047 is in school right now. You are shaping the India of 2047. I want to thank you all for truly constructing India.

He said, “A teacher is the pilot of a child’s life. We politicians or bureaucrats are just the facilitators. You are the pilots of 2047’s India. In my research, I have observed that the nations we aspire towards, all have teachers at their foundation. Education is at its foundation. I am not advocating for their education policies but just for reference, we would have to look at the world through the eyes of the history of education.”

The former Education Minister shared, “America, of whom the world talks about for its progress, was aiming towards enrolment of all girls in education in 1890. India started aiming for universal education around 1911. Singapore was a newly independent and poor country just 60 years ago with no natural resources. Its PM decided to make Singapore an educated country and left what’s next after they’ve achieved this level of education. They had a policy that could be debated and was radical. They gave incentives to graduate mothers and less educated women. As a result, more women got into education. The children of these educated parents are the new Singapore. Any country that we call progressive and aspire to go to for work or education, has teachers at its core.”

Manish Sisodia also highlighted a trend in developed countries where teachers are paid more than administrators.

“Using the Indian context, a teacher’s pay scale in a progressive country is more than an IAS. We often tell teachers that it’s in their hands to shape the future of the country, but we policymakers also have to do our part. In Germany, a teacher’s average annual income is approximately Rs72 lakhs and the bureaucrats are paid Rs71 lakhs on average. It’s similar in Switzerland. Those countries are ahead because they invest in teachers. In India, teachers are paid Rs12-15 lakhs and we need to do something about it,” he added.

“If we want to build 2047’s India and we expect from teachers that it will begin from the classrooms, then we have to make a resolve that the teachers in our country are paid more than any bureaucrat. We have to make this rule either now or sometime later but we have to. I am not suggesting that teachers must be made district magistrates, that is for the IAS since they come with that qualification. But a teacher who’s been teaching for five years should be paid more than an IAS who becomes a DM in five years,” the Ex Deputy CM said.

Manish Sisodia mentioned that he didn’t have the internet but he asked his team for books about education in the world and he researched. In India, the ‘guru’ (teacher) comes before the god, and he said it’s a uniquely Indian concept and he couldn’t find it anywhere else in the world.

“India also should send this message to the world that we don’t just sing these hymns but we put teachers before God in reality. And the teachers’ salaries should also reflect that. It would also incentivise more students who look for high-paying jobs to become teachers,” he added.

The former Deputy Chief Minister said that everyone is talking about a developed India in 2047 and that can not happen without giving this respect to the teachers, which is reflected in our culture, as well as in the balance sheet. Then no one can stop India from becoming a developed country.

Meanwhile, Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi said that teachers give proper guidance to children so that they bring glory to the country in future.

“Students studying in MCD schools come from middle-class or poor families. Many children’s parents are also not educated. Therefore, MCD teachers have to take care of the children as well as their parents. For the last one-two years, we have been organizing Mega PTMs,” Oberoi said.

The Delhi Mayor shared, “I went to these PTMs and talked to many parents. Our teachers also counsel the parents of the children and explain to them the importance of children’s education. The work of teachers is not limited to only imparting knowledge of subjects. Your struggle and dedication are much bigger. Teachers also teach moral values and integrity along with the social and personal development of children. Children listen to teachers quickly. Therefore, when the foundation of a child is being prepared, a teacher teaches him right and wrong.”

Shelly Oberoi further added that just as there has been a revolution in education in Delhi’s government schools under the leadership of CM Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, we want to bring a similar revolution in MCD schools. Till now MCD schools and its teachers were ignored. The salaries of the teachers of MCD schools did not come on time. Therefore, our biggest objective was that your salaries should come on time. In which we have succeeded. Now all the teachers are getting their salaries on time.

“Many batches of our principals have been sent for training to IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Kozhikode, Kerala. Today we have more than 1500 schools in Delhi, in which thousands of teachers are teaching. Last year, we passed a proposal in the House that now the teachers of MCD schools should be sent abroad for training. We will try to send the first batch of teachers abroad soon. It was only with the help of the Delhi government that our teachers were able to go for training. We stand with you in the times to come as well,” mentioned the Delhi Mayor.

On Teachers’ Day, Delhi Manish Sisodia honoured the teachers and principals of MCD schools who performed excellently. Principals of MCD schools Brajesh Kumar Jadoun, Meenakshi Trehan, Raj Rani, Anita Rani, Mohammad Azam Khan, Meenu Agarwal, Seema Rani, Nisha Gautam, Shruti Dhingra, Neeru Bala Sachdeva and Rahul Kumar were honoured.

Also, primary school teachers Kamlesh Rani, Aarti Rani, Meena Devi, Sachin, Vaishali Chaddha, Ritu Tyagi, Shilpa, Neelam, Deepak Yadav, Hitesh, Mukesh Kumar, Reena Devi, Vaishali Jain, Deepika, Ruby Gupta, Ekta Shridhar, Monica Rawat, Santosh Kumar Bairwa, Savita Panchal, Rakesh Kumar, Seema Panwar, Ajay Kumar Gupta, Ritu, Beena, Smriti, Nisha Munjal, Pankaj, Jyoti, Sushila, Poonam Beriwal, Neha Mahalwal, Annu Tyagi, Neetu Goyal, Mukesh Kumar, Beena, Anju Rana, Renu, Mamta Pingolia, Sonia, Pinky, Geeta Gera, Anju Garg, Rajni Rani, Virendra Mukhija, Sandesh, Bharti Modi, Amit Dabas, Meenakshi, Devendra Kumar Sharma, Richa, Dharmendra Kumar, Anuja Gulati, Meenakshi Kumari, Gurpreet Kaur, Pappi Kumar, Ravinder Kumar, Sarla Singh, Fauzia Begum, Mandeep, Anju Rana, Preeti Sharma, Monica, Sunayana, Ashok Kumar and nursery teachers Anu Khatri, Geeta Arora, Kanchan Sharma, Shweta Tuli and Swati Rani were felicitated.

Adani Group Founder and Chairman Gautam Adani Dharavi Project

Dharavi Project Is About Restoring Dignity To Over 1MN People: Adani

Adani Group Founder and Chairman Gautam Adani on Tuesday mentioned the Dharavi Redevelopment Project during a speech in a Mumbai college and said it is not just about “urban renewal” but “restoring dignity to over one million residents of our country”.

Addressing the students at Jai Hind College, Mumbai, Gautam Adani extended greetings to the teachers on Teachers Day.

“I wish Happy Teachers Day to all the teachers present here…I find it fascinating that 75 years ago, two visionary professors from DJ Sindh College in Karachi laid the foundation for these institutions in two small rooms. Despite the immense challenges and human displacement during the partition of our country, they envisioned a future where the power of education could heal and unite,” he said.

“I stand here today, humbled and thankful, having been invited by Vikram Nankani to share my experiences from this historic platform. Just as Jai Hind College was built on the principle of breaking boundaries and creating new possibilities, the theme of my talk will focus on the inspirations that allowed me to overcome my own boundaries,” he added.

Gautam Adani said that every nation has its transformative years that change the direction of its future.

“Every nation has its transformative years that change the direction of its future. 1947 was about a free India. 1991 was about the liberalisation of our businesses. And in 2014, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the essence of freedom was further accelerated as reforms and decisive governance took centre stage. All these years stand as turning points, each building on the other in India’s remarkable journey,” he said.

He asserted that the future belongs to those who dare to see beyond the present, who recognise that today’s limits are tomorrow’s starting points.

He talked about the development of Mundra port, the largest commercial port in India with state-of-the-art infrastructure and largest coal import terminal.

“In 1995, the Gujarat government announced its port-led industrial development plan through public-private partnerships. Around that time, we had been approached by the global commodities trader Cargill. It was a proposal to partner for manufacturing and sourcing salt from the Kutch region. While the partnership did not materialize, we were left with about 40,000 acres of marshy land and approval to build a captive jetty at Mundra for the export of salt,” he said.

“What others saw as marshy barren land, we saw as a canvas waiting to be transformed. That canvas is now by far our nation’s largest port! Mundra became my karmabhoomi and made my vision a reality a powerful testimony to the fact what you dream, you create, and what you think, you become. Mundra today hosts India’s largest port, the largest industrial Special Economic Zone, the largest container terminals, the largest thermal power plant, the largest solar manufacturing facility, the largest copper plant, and the largest edible oil refinery. And yet, we’re only about 10 per cent of what Mundra will eventually become. It stands as a living monument to the power of integrated business models and the strategic value of adjacencies challenging the very concept of core competencies that the west advocates,” he added.

Mundra port provides multimodal connectivity and is a deep-draft, all-weather port.

Gautam Adani said over the years he learnt a vital lesson that the “bigger your bets, bigger are the boundaries you break and bigger the boundaries you break, lesser is the competition”.

He spoke of Khavda in Kutch, one of the world’s most inhospitable deserts, now transformed into the world’s biggest Renewable Energy installation, spanning several hundred square kilometres. He then spoke of “world’s most complex redevelopment project” in Mumbai’s Dharavi.

“Khavda is not just another project it is a vision. Already generating more than 3,000 MW of clean energy – and on track to reach 30 GW in the next five years there is no parallel to Khavda today. For us, Khavda is a symbol of national pride capturing the philosophy of everything that the Adani Group as a company stands for,” he said.

“Or consider the world’s most complex redevelopment project in Mumbai’s Dharavi, where we are transforming the world’s largest slum over the next decade to create an unmatched ecosystem of sustainable living. For me, Dharavi is not just about urban renewal. It is about restoring dignity to over one million residents of our country. It is about the possibilities when you dare to dream big and act with purpose,” he added.

Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRPPL), a joint venture between the Adani Group and the Government of Maharashtra, announced that eligible residential tenements in Dharavi, will get flats with independent kitchens and toilets measuring a minimum 350 square feet (sq ft), which is 17 per cent more and the highest among slum redevelopment projects in Mumbai. Vantara Offers Assistance To Namibia’s Wildlife Amid Severe Drought

Anant Ambani’s Vantara has extended a helping hand to Namibia, offering critical assistance to prevent the culling of animals as the nation grapples with severe drought conditions.

In a formal communication addressed to the High Commissioner of the Republic of Namibia, Vantara expressed its commitment to support wildlife conservation efforts and provide alternatives to animal culling, which has been considered as a drought-relief measure.

Anant Ambani serves as Director on the Boards of Jio Platforms Limited since March 2020, Reliance Retail Ventures Limited since May 2022 and Reliance New Energy Limited and Reliance New Solar Energy Limited since June 2021. He also serves on the Board of Reliance Foundation since September 2022.

Namibia, currently facing the devastating impact of drought, has explored various strategies to mitigate the crisis, including the controversial option of culling animals to reduce strain on limited resources.

However, Anant Ambani, known for his deep passion for wildlife conservation, has stepped forward with a compassionate solution.

In the letter to the High Commissioner, Vantara stated, “We at Vantara stand in complete solidarity with the people of Namibia during this challenging time. We are deeply moved by the plight of the wildlife and would like to offer our assistance to avoid the culling of animals.”

The letter further emphasised Vantara’s past efforts of providing shelter and refuge to animals at risk of being culled. “In the past, Vantara has provided shelter and refuge to animals on the verge of being culled, offering a sustainable alternative. We are prepared to put our best foot forward and provide lifelong care or temporary housing for the animals, ensuring their survival,” the letter continued.

Anant Ambani dedicated Vantara, a visionary project focused on wildlife conservation, earlier this year. The sanctuary is home to over 200 elephants and 300 big cats, including tigers, lions, jaguars, and leopards, among other wildlife species. Ambani’s initiative reflects his commitment to protecting endangered animals and preserving biodiversity.

“At Vantara, our mission is to overcome challenges that threaten the welfare and survival of animals. We believe that every life is precious, and we are eager to work with the Republic of Namibia and its organisations to explore alternatives to culling,” the letter concluded. (ANI)

Whether it is Baramulla, Anantnag or Srinagar, the trend is seen in favor of the National Conference. As far as the last 5-6 years have been a period of misgovernance, allegations of corruption have been made, all of them will be investigated.”

He further asserted that the decision taken for Jammu and Kashmir (Revocation of Article 370), people are not happy with that.

“We want to say that the decision taken for J&K, people of J&K are not happy with that. A positive surrounding could be seen here for the National Conference. And we hope that wherever our alliance partners are there, they will be successful,” Omar added.

Chinese FDI in India

Chinese FDI In India Getting Electrified

BYD is the acronym for the Chinese electric as also conventional vehicle, auto components and high technology battery making group ‘Build Your Dreams.’ The company fulfilling many dreams across the globe is in India since 2007 starting with production of batteries and components for mobile phones. Not long after these businesses were consolidated, BYD, as was its original target ventured into electric mobility in this country starting with supply of electric bus to Chennai transport authorities. BYD’s electric vehicle (EV) portfolio has continued to expand since with the introduction of more EV bus variants and trucks.

India being already the world’s fourth largest producer and market for automobiles, BYD had all through nursed the ambition to make here locally passenger EVs that are likely to have 30 per cent share of the Indian car market by 2030. The company has incredible credentials both as manufacturer of EVs in different ranges and rechargeable batteries such as lithium-ion, NiMH and NCM ones.

Last year its production of 3.02 million vehicles was a lot more than that of Tesla. The now thwarted BYD’s ambition to build passenger cars in India was part of its global strategy to have manufacturing plants also outside China, seen as a sure way to get a bigger share of market of host countries, win the goodwill of local governments and equally importantly avoid the high tariff barrier. For example, the high priest of free trade the US has recently raised the duty on EVs imported from China fourfold to 100 per cent on the bogey of protecting the interest of American car manufacturers from “unfair trade practices” of the likes of BYD. Not as punishing as the US tariff wall, the European Commission has nevertheless levied a stiff duty of up to 38 per cent on EVs originating in China.

Free trade champions will argue that high trade barriers protect inefficiency of the domestic industry by guarding it from efficient counterparts in foreign lands. In the case of EVs, there is no evidence that China is giving WTO (World Trade Organisation) non-complaint subsidy to automobile companies. (At the same time, every country, including the US is incentivising production of EVs and hybrid vehicles and encouraging citizens to buy these non-polluting cars with sops. Ex-home battery charging remains a major issue in many countries, though.)

Competition improves efficiency and makes available products at best possible prices benefiting consumers. But the US and EU EV buyers can only rue their fate if their governments decide to go against the grain of free trade and universalisation of best work practices. In sharp contrast to what obtains in the US and the EU, New Delhi is allowing import of EVs at 15 per cent duty, including those from China. But this comes with caveats that overseas exporting companies will make minimum investment of $500 million within three years in manufacturing plants and these will have to achieve 25 per cent localisation in three years and 50 per cent in five years.

ALSO READ: Where Do India, China Stand In Defence Technology?

Thanks to production linked incentive (PLI) scheme and FAME II and the involvement of a growing number of automobile groups to make hybrid and EVs, India saw EVs making up 6.5 per cent of all vehicles sold here in 2023, which was an impressive 50 per cent jump from the year before. Which EV manufacturer, which still does not have a plant here, will not want to be in India where the government is offering liberal incentives to facilitate rapid migration from fossil fuel driven vehicles to automobiles powered by energy stored in batteries. Expectedly, the available circumstances encouraged BYD, which is by far the world’s largest EV producer to doggedly pursue with New Delhi for clearances to build an EV factory in Hyderabad in a joint venture with Megha Engineering and Infrastructure.

The JV proposed an investment of $1 billion, that is, double the government prescribed minimum investment in EV manufacturing to be allowed to import at 15 per cent duty. The BYD proposal to build a manufacturing base for capacity up to 15,000 EVs a year here looked particularly attractive because of the inclusion of battery making facilities. But in its pursuit of government clearances, the JV hit a wall of silence. An official Press note says investments originating in a country with which we share land border will have to go through the government route. Even while security concerns have led New Delhi to enact the policy, it claims to have introduced it as one to stop “opportunistic” FDI that may lead to “takeover/acquisitions of Indian companies.”

Earlier, another Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor Company engaged in making cars at multiple locations globally with conventional internal combustion engine found its application to build a $1 billion factory here not cleared. Why only automobile industry FDI proposals, Chinese companies engaged in making high-tech electronic products, including for Apple, have too failed to secure approvals for establishing manufacturing units in India through FDI. India’s security concerns vis a vis China became particularly severe following Chinese incursions in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley in 2020 when a number of Indian soldiers were killed in our army’s attempt to push back the infiltrators.

It is nobody’s case that New Delhi should be any less vigilant about its mighty neighbour in the north for Chinese FDI. The security establishment engaged in foiling Chinese aggressive designs and the foreign ministry that must match Beijing’s diplomacy to win friends in our neighbourhood and beyond will expectedly be obsessively cautious about Chinese FDI even at the cost of our own economic interest.

While India has its reservations, China has firmly established itself as one of the world’s foremost direct investors in foreign countries. Consider this, China had a 10.9 per cent share in the total global FDI outflows of $1.55 trillion in 2023. In the midst of China conundrum, it is important to remember that country described as the “world’s factory” has replaced the US to become India’s largest trading partner with the two-way trade at 118.4 billion in 2023-24. But the trade with China leaves New Delhi with the challenge to very substantially bring down the deficit of $85 billion in 2023-24.

The 2023-24 Economic Survey says China comes 22nd among countries committing FDI here with an insignificant share of 0.37 per cent ($2.5 billion) of total FDI inflows between April 2000 and March 2024. This should be seen against the value of China’s overseas investment, including construction since 2005 approaching $2.5 trillion. Whatever the security concerns, New Delhi must not lose sight of the fact that China and not the US is now the largest source of investible savings in the world.

Seen as the brainwork of V Anantha Nageswaran, chief economic adviser to the finance ministry and who is in charge of putting together the Economic Survey, a long paragraph in it says: “India faces two choices to benefit from China plus one strategy: it can integrate into China’s supply chain or promote FDI from China. Among these choices, focusing on FDI from China seems more promising for boosting India’s exports to the US, similar to how East Asian economies did in the past. Moreover, choosing FDI as a strategy to benefit from the China plus one approach appears more advantageous than relying on trade. This is because China is India’s top import partner, and the trade deficit with China has been growing. As the US and Europe shift their immediate sourcing away from China, it is more effective to have Chinese companies invest in India and then export the products to these markets rather than importing from China, adding minimal value, and then re-exporting them. Further, 105 HS Code-8402, 8406 and 8414. 106 Sourced from the presentation made by Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, Economic Counsellor and Director of Research Department, IMF at NCEAR, India Policy Forum on 2 July 2024, ‘CRACKS IN THE SYSTEM: How Geo-Economic Fragmentation is Reshaping the World’ External Sector 145 a recent research note from the Rhodium Group points out, ‘China’s dominance over so many product categories creates, first and foremost, a risk of economic coercion, where the government restrains access to crucial inputs for political leverage.’107 The same brief also notes, ‘Brazil and Turkey have raised barriers to imports of Chinese EVs, but enacted measures to attract Chinese FDI in the sector.’ European nations, too, have decided to follow a similar approach 108. Hence, it is imperative that India finds the right balance between importing goods from China and importing capital (FDI) from China.”

It will be far-fetched to believe that such a loaded paragraph could find a place in the Economic Survey without the nod from his boss Nirmala Sitharaman. This expectedly has raised a tempest in a teapot, with so many from politicians to economists to military strategists joining the debate. Unarguably, the most sensible, dispassionate point on the subject has been made by Arvind Panagariya, chairman of the 17th Finance Commission, in an interview with the Economic Times: “I am not a security expert, but those who are should be able to tell us the kinds of investments that carry security risks. Beyond that, we may allow Chinese investments. Remember that we also acquire leverage against China when a sizeable investment by that country is on our soil.”

Earlier on August 27, a bird flu outbreak was confirmed in Pipli town of Odisha’s Puri district, with detection of the H5N1 avian influenza in several poultry farms, prompting authorities to initiate containment measures.

As part of containment measures, over 20,000 birds are set to be culled to prevent the spread of the virus to other regions.

The Animal Husbandry Department has initiated the culling process, which is expected to continue for several days.

Residents in Pipili have been advised to avoid contact with birds and to report any sick or dead poultry to authorities immediately. To further prevent the virus from spreading, a temporary ban on the sale and transport of poultry products from the region has been imposed. (ANI)
