Andhra Pradesh Human Resources Development Minister Nara Lokesh visited flood-affected areas

Andhra Rains: Nara Lokesh visits flood-affected areas in Mangalagiri

Andhra Pradesh Human Resources Development Minister Nara Lokesh visited flood-affected areas in Mangalagiri constituency on Sunday to take stock of the rescue and relief measures taken by the government.

Lokesh visited the Ratnalcheruvu area in Mangalagiri town, which was severely impacted by heavy rainfall, and interacted with residents to understand their situation. He also enquired about the relief measures and ensured they were reaching everyone in need.

He also assured residents that the government would provide all necessary assistance to those affected by the floods.

Following the heavy rains, the Pulichintala dam in Palnadu district has started overflowing.

Earlier, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu held a review meeting, urging officials to remain vigilant and provide necessary assistance.

He directed that all departments be on high alert, schools in heavily affected areas be closed, and warning boards be installed near overflowing streams and rivers. Alerts were also to be sent to mobile phones in affected areas.

He also instructed officials to be prepared for any emergency and to provide necessary assistance to the people.

CM Naidu also warned of potential hazards, such as falling power lines and trees due to the severe weather conditions.

On Saturday, heavy rains caused waterlogging in parts of Vijayawada city and Warangal city.

The India Meteorological Department issued a warning that cyclone “Asna,” a deep depression over the Arabian Sea, is expected to move West-Northwest away from the Indian coast in the next 24 hours. (ANI)

beaten to death in Haryana's Charkhi Dadri

Security Tightened In Haryana After Migrant Worker Beaten To Death

After a migrant worker from West Bengal was allegedly beaten to death in Haryana’s Charkhi Dadri district over suspicions that he had eaten beef, police have increased security in the area to prevent further unrest or any untoward incident.

Badhra DSP Bharat Bhushan told ANI that both SSB and state police personnel have been deployed in the district and that the police are closely monitoring social media posts.

“The victim, a resident of North 24 Parganas in West Bengal, worked as a ragpicker here. We have deployed a company of SSB and state police and are continuously monitoring social media,” Bhushan said.

He added that seven people have been arrested in connection with the alleged murder.

“On August 27, we received information that some people in the slums of Hansawas Khurd village were consuming prohibited meat. We have collected a sample of the meat, which has been sent to an FSL lab. Future proceedings will depend on the lab report. During this period, based on suspicion, the complainants visited other slums, kidnapped two persons, and assaulted them. One person died and the other was injured,” he explained.

“The police immediately took action and arrested seven suspects. Three have been sent to judicial custody, while four are in police remand. We are interrogating them, and if other names emerge, further arrests will be made,” he added.

The deceased has been identified as Sabir Malik. The arrested individuals are Abhishek, Ravinder, Mohit, Kamaljeet, and Sahil. The two others detained are minors.

four wolves in Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich under 'Operation Bhediya

Locals Narrate Wolf Attack Stories In Bahraich

Even as officials have caught four wolves in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich under ‘Operation Bhediya’, locals in the area, who claims to have been attacked by wolves narrate the story of the horrifying attack.

The wolves have killed eight people in the area. So far four wolves have been caught and search for two more is underway. Seven children and a woman have been killed in wolf attacks in Bahraich in the past two months.

A man and a child suffered animal attack in Bahraich. Injured people claimed it to be a wolf attack.

A relative of the injured child told ANI, “I am the child’s uncle. He was attacked by the wolf at around 1:30 am. When we screamed then the wolf left him and went away. We chased it but it went into sugarcane fields. It was a wolf. There is its footprint in the house.”

A man who claimed to have been attacked by an animal said, “At 4 in the morning an animal attacked me. He attacked my neck with its jaws. It was bigger than a jackal. I was not able to identify the animal. I got nervous at that moment. So I am not sure which animal it was. If I would not have caught his mouth, he would have killed me.”

Mahasi Civil Health Centre Incharge, Dr Ashish Verma told ANI that whether it was a wolf attack or not, the matter is of investigation for the forest department.

“There are minor injuries on both people. One came at 2 am and another person came at 5 in the morning. They are not in any critical situation. The patient has claimed that it is a wolf attack. However, it is a matter of investigation for the Forest Department,” Dr Verma said.

Notably, officials said on Sunday that they have detected the presence of two wolves through drones and will capture them by today or tomorrow.

Abhishek Singh, CO Forest, Bahraich Division told ANI, “Our whole team is going to be here in the guidance of DFO. We detected the presence of wolves through drones. Both wolves have been traced in this area. We will capture it by today or tomorrow.”

Earlier on Saturday, the forest department team laid traps at Sisayya Chudaamani village from where the fourth wolf was captured on Thursday.

In the wake of recent wolf attack incidents, the forest department is bursting firecrackers at night to protect the villagers from wolves.

Speaking on the wolf attacks, Circle Officer of Mahasi, Rupendra Gaur, said, “Drones, nets and cages are being used to catch the wolves. We are continuously trying to catch the wolves…We are ensuring that no untoward incident takes place anywhere. Eight people have lost their lives and 15 others are injured.”

Giving details about the incident earlier, MLA Sureshwar Singh said, “Wolf scare began in Bahraich district and its Mahasi Assembly constituency from 17th July 2024. Since then 8 deaths have been reported and 20 people have been injured. Work is underway to catch those wolves…Electricity is being ensured in identified areas where there is no power supply…We are also setting up doors at houses where incidents have occurred…I am carrying a rifle to boost the morale of the people.”

Earlier on Wednesday, the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department deployed an infrared (IR) drone in which the presence of two wolves was noticed in Bahraich. (ANI)

Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's statue.

Mumbai: Maha Vikas Aghadi, BJP Hold Separate Protests Over Shivaji Statue Collapse

Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held separate protests in Maharashtra’s Mumbai on Sunday in connection with the collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s statue.

While the MVA’s protest march, which started from Hutatma Chowk to Gateway of India, aimed to condemn the incident, the BJP staged a counter-protest against the MVA in the Dadri area of Mumbai, accusing the latter of politicising the issue.

A 35-foot-tall statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Sindhudurg district collapsed on August 26. It had been unveiled on December 4 last year during Navy Day celebrations, marking the first such event in Sindhudurg.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Anil Desai said, “PM was emotional, he expressed his grief over the incident, but the government of Maharashtra, which should have expressed themselves, didn’t. On the contrary, they started picking up with the opposition in a wrong way and saying that we were politicising the issue, whereas this was the most emotional issue that Maharashtra never witnessed in the past. We had democratically done everything, we had applied to the administration and the police, and we expected that permission would come in due course, which they didn’t do.”

He further said that it looks as if some warlike opposition is going to take place.

“But we are assuring and expecting cooperation from the same administration and police authorities because this morcha will be held in a very democratic and disciplined way. They (the ruling side) may call it (political) because they have nothing to defend. They have nothing on their side to defend. Now, whatever is being done by the opposition is just being criticised, but people are aware. People of Maharashtra know who is playing politics and who is on the road with our pride…Government should resign,” the Shiv Sena (UBT) MP added.

Earlier, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis dismissed the opposition’s protest as purely political.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant emphasized that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is revered as a god-like figure and criticised the authorities for hindering their protest. He claimed that the statue’s collapse represented a blow to their honour and self-respect.

“His statue collapsed, and with that, our devotion, honour, and self-respect collapsed and fell there. Despite such disrespect, leaders of political parties are supporting it–what else will do if not condemn them? Uddhav Thackeray has said that is an insult to Maharashtra. We are being stopped in our own Maharashtra by our police and we can’t go ahead with it (the protest march). I have never seen such helpless police. What if they did (apologise)? See the timing. Isn’t the statement political?” he said.

Further, MP Sawant said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi always makes political statements.

“Had he felt such sympathy, he would have gone to Manipur. The Central Government’s policy is to disrespect Maharashtra. This is not political, this agitation is for the honour of Maharashtra, which has been insulted,” he added. (ANI)

Indian Youth Jobs and Disenchantment

Youth, Jobs and Disenchantment in India

Recently, the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), which is India’s oldest and largest independent non-profit economic research and policy think tank, released a study that found 38% of workers who deliver food for app-based services were at least graduates or above; and 93% had completed 10th standard school education. In Tier 2 cities (with a population of between 50,000 and 99,999), nearly 40% of delivery workers were graduates.

There are an estimated 7 million gig workers who deliver food for app-based services such as Zomato and Swiggy or other goods and packages for services such as Amazon. The NCAER report suggests that a sizeable proportion of food delivery workers are highly educated and could be overqualified for the tasks that they have to perform.

They could also be underpaid. According to another survey by Borzo, a same-day delivery service, around 78% of gig delivery workers, employed with food and other delivery apps earn less than Rs 2.50 lakh per annum or around Rs 20,000 per month. Many, if not most, of these workers are the sole earners for their families, which often include elderly dependents as well as minors and unemployed kin, so the wages they make can be piffling.

Moreover, gig workers such as those covered by these reports work much longer hours than others. The NCAER report found that the average weekly working hours for platform workers amounted to 69.3 hours, in contrast to the 56 hours reported for workers included in the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), which computes the government’s estimates of employment and unemployment. So, a gig worker typically works nearly 10 hours seven days a week to earn a meagre wage.

In addition, gig workers in India are not covered under labour laws, leaving them without legal protection against discrimination, unfair termination, or workplace harassment. Additionally, they are deprived of crucial benefits such as health insurance, retirement benefits, and paid leave. Instead they often face penalties if they slip up on tight delivery time targets.

To be sure, some gig workers take those jobs to complement the income they might earn from other jobs that they hold but presumably for a large proportion of such workers, the gigs are their primary jobs.

Let’s shift the focus a bit now to jobs in general in India. First, a quick statistical recap on India’s youth population. Of 1.4 billion Indians, 50% (700 million) are below the age of 25; and more than 65% (>900 million) are below the age of 35. While those are huge numbers, the average age of an Indian is 29 (in China it is 37; and in Japan 48). The estimated number of young Indians (in the 15-24 age group) is 254 million; and the population of working age Indians (15-64) is estimated at more than 950 million.

It is also estimated that only around half of that working age population is employed and that too most of them in agriculture where, on overcrowded tiny farms, employment can be an euphemism for joblessness. People are forced to stay on although they add little or nothing to a farm’s productivity simply because there is no alternative option to earn an income.

So, it is no surprise that when vacancies, such as for government jobs, are announced, the rush to apply for them is unprecedented.

ALSO READ: Can Compulsory Military Service Solve India’s Job Crisis?

Consider a couple of examples, none of them is apocryphal: This year for 60,000 police constable jobs in the populous state of Uttar Pradesh, there were 4.8 million applications. When the Indian army recruits soldiers, the selection ratio is as low as 3%.

Government data on youth unemployment is patchy, discontinuous, and ambiguous but it is clear that youth unemployment is a serious issue simmering under the surface in India. Of the estimated 500 million or so Indians who are deemed to be employed, only a quarter or around 130 million, are in the organised sector (government or private sector jobs). The rest work in unorganised sector jobs where benefits, including wages, can be low, uncertain, and unregulated.

The numbers are equally staggering when it comes to people seeking admission to professional institutes. In 2023, more than 2 million people took the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), a standardised national-level entrance exam in India for students who wish to pursue undergraduate medical education in government or private medical colleges. The number of seats they were competing for was 108,000. The selection ratio was a shade above 5%. In 2023, 1.5 million people took the joint entrance exam to get into engineering colleges. They were competing for 250,000 seats.

The intensity of the pressure and competition to get into institutions is high and it is borne out by incidents such as the NEET. This year, there were allegations of a paper leak, backed by a mafia of operators who sold exam papers before the test and jeopardised the futures of thousands of candidates.

Examples such as the state of gig workers or the lack of organised sector jobs for India’s youth, or the exam paper leak scandal are just a few indicators of how disenchanted India’s youth might be.

Despite being one of the fastest-growing economies, India faces significant unemployment issues, especially among the educated youth. There is often a gap between the skills that graduates possess and what employers need, leading to underemployment or joblessness.

The fragility of such a job market can be exacerbated by periodic economic slowdowns and global uncertainties. And, finally, the sheer number of job seekers compared to available opportunities creates intense competition, making it difficult for many to secure stable employment.

The government often cites figures that show a rise in the number of start-ups and the growth of the gig economy as evidence that there are more opportunities for India’s youth. But for the cohort of more than 250 million young Indians are such options the outcome of genuine entrepreneurship and innovation or signs of frustration and desperation? You decide.
