Mamata Standing With Rapists: BJP's Gaurav Bhatia

Mamata Standing With Rapists: BJP’s Gaurav Bhatia

Demanding the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Gaurav Bhatia on Monday alleged that the Trinamool chief is standing with the rapists instead of standing with the family of the victim, adding that the head of the entire India’s democracy has bowed in shame.

After the Supreme Court directed the CBI to submit a fresh report by September 17, addressing a press conference in Delhi, Gaurav Bhatia said that the head of India’s democracy has bowed in shame after a two-hour hearing took place in the top court.

“Today, a two-hour hearing took place in the Supreme Court. The head of the entire India’s democracy has bowed in shame. If anyone is not feeling ashamed, it’s West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. If you had witnessed the hearing, you would have seen that on one side were the protectors of the Constitution–the Supreme Court, BJP, and the people of India and West Bengal–and on the other side were the violators of the Constitution. She is not ashamed that she failed to stand with the family of the victim,” Gaurav Bhatia said.

“Questions that the SC has asked Mamata Banerjee, the CJI said there was at least a 14-hour delay to register the FIR. Does Mamata Banerjee still want to continue as West Bengal CM?… She should resign so that a fair investigation can be conducted. If during the investigation evidence shows that she was careless and also involved in tampering with the evidence, then her polygraph test should be conducted, and her arrest could be imperative to ensure that there is justice given to the family members of the victim and every citizen of the country,” he added.

The BJP leader further said that the police of West Bengal should be suspended as they can’t safeguard the people.

“Her call records and police commissioner’s call record, ex-principal, should be released to the public. When such an atrocity was happening at that time, were you planning something? Justice will be served. No matter how hard you try to remove the evidence or take action against the doctors, justice will be served. The parents of the victim themselves have said that they were pressurised by the police. The police themselves wrote the complaint; then you can imagine how much truth will be there. The Joint Platform for Doctors in West Bengal have also asked Abhishek Banerjee to resign because he is spreading lie. He is saying that the victim died because she was bleeding for 3 hours and no medical treatment was given,” he added.

Bhatia further said that the BJP is the party that wants justice for the family of the victim and that every girl is safe in Bengal.

Earlier today, the Supreme Court ordered the immediate removal of all photos of the victim from social media.

The apex court also reminded that no action should be taken against doctors once they return to work by tomorrow 5 PM. However, it noted that if they fail to do so, the court will not be able to restrain the state government, and further absence from work might lead to disciplinary action against them.

Senior Advocate Geeta Luthra, following the court’s statement, mentioned that doctors are facing threats. The Supreme Court also directed necessary conditions being created to safety and security of doctors in hospitals with availability of toilet facilities for both male and female among others.

The Court also raised multiple concerns regarding the post-mortem report in a case of alleged rape and murder. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the West Bengal government, pointed out several issues. One of the advocates present during the hearing questioned the improper handling of a vaginal swab, which should have been preserved at 4 degrees Celsius but was not.

The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud, asked SG Mehta whether the necessary documents were available when the body was sent for the post-mortem. Senior Advocate Sibal, unable to immediately produce the required documents, requested additional time to submit them. Mehta confirmed that the documents were not included in the files provided to them.

During the proceedings, CJI Chandrachud directed the CBI to submit an updated status report by next week. The court will review the matter on Tuesday, September 17.

The court also inquired about CCTV footage related to the incident. SG Mehta confirmed that four video clips, totalling 27 minutes, had been handed over to the CBI. The CBI is now sending the samples to AIIMS and other forensic labs for further examination.

The body of the trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of the R G Kar hospital on August 9. The incident sparked nationwide protests. A civic volunteer was arrested shortly after. The CBI also arrested Dr Sandip Ghosh, for alleged financial misconduct at the medical establishment. (ANI)

Lax Legal System & Patriarchal Mindset Behind Rise In Rapes

‘Lax Legal System, Patriarchal Mindset Behind Rise In Rape Cases’

Chhaya Singh, a Ghaziabad-based school administrator and social worker, shares her views on India being the rape capital of the world.

We have a patriarchal society where desires of men and boys are given more importance and upper hand in families, even today in this 21st century. We may have found recognition on many fronts globally but deep down in the heart, we are still very conservative. We don’t openly speak about sex, nor do we have a liberal approach towards it. Sex is still a taboo or I would say, an ‘Adam’s apple or forbidden fruit’.

So anything that is so out of bounds, stirs a deep desire.

While women are progressing in all fields of life, their growth is not well digested by our male dominated society. Most men are overwhelmed and don’t know how to handle their bruised egos and on top of it wide spread unemployment has created hopelessness everywhere. This chaos is upsetting the social fabric of the country at large.

This is a backlash against woman, who are now occupying more public spaces by way of women empowerment which is challenging male hegemony in all walks of life. We also have an age-old discriminatory caste hierarchy where woman of lower caste are easy targets for men of higher or dominant caste. They use sexual violence as a weapon to suppress the lower caste and gender. This has been going on for ages and still continues to in our so called modern society.

ALSO READ: Men Continue to Violate Women Without a Shred of Fear

The country needs a lot of reforms on this account, not only by way of laws or legislation but through the mindset of the people too. Any number of strict laws, fast track courts or capital punishment be given, until the society does not change its thinking, nothing much can be achieved.

Though, if the punishment in such cases is very strict, like cutting the genitals of the offender or throwing acid on his body (Taliban style punishments) maybe some men or boys backout in fear.

If we need a larger group to be reformed, then it should start at an early age. Mothers must teach their boys values to the core, teach them how to respect girls and women. Sex education needs to be an essential part of the education curriculum and subjects like Moral Science should be back in schools. There should be open talk about such incidents in schools and colleges, young minds should be educated to not take their fellow females for granted nor treat them as objects, but to be empathetic and view them as equals.

Parents and education reforms have a very large role to play in a society for such a menace to go, which may still take a lot of time, but this seems to be the only ray of hope for a safer and healthier society for women to survive and flourish.

Time has come, for governments, legal system and society at large to take this up as an urgent task and frame laws, education reforms and social awareness campaigns to curb this menace in the current setup.

TN: Actors’ Body Passes Resolution Against Sexual Harassment Cases In Industry

Nadigar Sangam, the South Indian Artistes’ Association of Kollywood, passed a resolution on Sunday calling for strict action against sexual harassment complaints in the industry.

The 68th General Council meeting of Nadigar Sangam was held in Kamarajar Arangam in Chennai on Sunday. Large numbers of Union members participated in the meeting and several issues were discussed.

Other than Vishal, the association’s president, Nassar, the association’s treasurer, Karthi and several others participated in the general council meeting.

Actor Vishal, who is also the general secretary of Nadigar Sangam, affirmed that ‘strict action’ will be taken as soon as a complaint is received.

“The meeting went well as usual. We have taken the issue very seriously. We have formed a committee. We have given confidence to women that there is somebody to listen to this is our first step,” he stated.

This comes in wake of the row created in the Malayalam film industry after the Justice Hema Committee report disclosed some shocking details of harassment, exploitation, and ill-treatment of women in the industry.

The 235-page report, published after redacting the names of witnesses and the accused, notes that the Malayalam film industry is controlled by about 10 to 15 male producers, directors, and actors who dominate and exert control over the industry.

The report of the three-member panel headed by a former judge of the Kerala High Court and set up by the state government in 2017, was submitted to the Pinarayi-led Kerala government in December 2019 and made public only this month.

The government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the hardships faced by women in the industry.

Following the allegations, Mohanlal resigned as the President of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). Several other AMMA leaders also resigned from their positions. (ANI)

Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) residents Rajnath Singh

Rajnath Urges PoK Residents To Join India

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated on Saturday that unlike Pakistan, India considers the people of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as their own and urged them to join India.

He was addressing a public rally in the Ramban area of Jammu on Sunday, as part of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s campaign for the upcoming assembly polls in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

“I ask all of you to form a BJP government in J&K, and after seeing development in J&K, the people of PoK will say that we do not want to stay with Pakistan. We want to go with India,” Singh said.

“People in Pakistan consider PoK people as foreigners, but India considers the people of PoK as our own. Come and join us, he added.

He also said that the Centre abrogated Article 370 for the prosperity of Jammu and Kashmir and said the BJP has not discriminated against the people of the Union Territory as claimed by the National Conference, People’s Democratic Party, and Congress.

“We have never discriminated against anyone. Our Army is here. I want to ask you, do they discriminate? You people are fortunate; we have abrogated Article 370—we have done that for the prosperity and happiness of J&K. What did Article 370 give to you?”

He added, “Be it Congress, National Conference, or People’s Democratic Party, they tell you that the BJP has discriminated against the people of J&K (by abrogating Article 370). I want to tell you, if we do anything wrong, condemn it publicly. We don’t want your support by keeping you in the dark…”

He claimed that Jammu and Kashmir would become the number one state of India in case the BJP remained in power for ten years there.

“I say with confidence that if the BJP government runs here for 10 years, our Jammu and Kashmir will become the number one state of India… Our India, which was at the 11th place in the world in terms of the size of the economy, has reached the 5th place today. I am not saying this; the world’s leading economists and big financial firms are now claiming that India is progressing at such a fast pace. By 2027, our India will stand in third place among the countries of the world in terms of the size of the economy,” Rajnath Singh said.

“A few days ago, I was in the USA, and people of the Indian diaspora asked me what would happen in the Jammu and Kashmir elections. I said with full confidence that the BJP will form the government in J&K with a clear majority,” he added.

Polling in the erstwhile state would be held in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1. The counting of votes will take place on October 8.

The National Conference and the Congress have forged a pre-poll alliance days ahead of the polls.

There are a total number of 90 assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir, out of which 7 seats are reserved for SCs and 9 seats are reserved for STs.

According to the Election Commission of India, Jammu and Kashmir has 88.06 lakh eligible electors. These are the first assembly elections to be held in Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370.

In the previous Assembly elections, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won 28 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 25, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) won 15, and the Congress won 12. (ANI)

Bajrang Punia

Would Have Been Patriots If We Had Joined BJP: Bajrang

Olympian Bajrang Punia who is now the working President of the Kisan Congress on Sunday alleged double standards from the BJP, saying that had he and Vinesh Phogat joined the BJP they would have been hailed as ‘patriots’ but are now labelled ‘anti-nationals’ for aligning with the opposition.

Punia expressed confidence that, as a farmer’s son, he would raise the concerns of the farmers in a better way.

“I am an athlete and a son of a farmer, as per the responsibility given by the party, I think I can raise concerns of the farmers in a better way… Brijbhushan and BJP have a problem (that we joined Congress). We would have become patriots if we had joined the BJP, but because we have joined the Congress, they are calling us anti-nationals. We are with our leader Rahul Gandhi and his struggle. He is raising the voice of all sections, be it farmers, youth or athletes,” he said.

Punia further challenged CM Nayab Singh Saini to contest the Haryana Polls from Julana.

“(If defeating Vinesh Phogat is easy) then why is Nayab Singh Saini searching for a safe seat for himself? If he thinks that anyone can defeat Vinesh Phogat, then ask him to contest from Julana… He is welcome to contest from Julana. He is the CM of the state and he can do anything… If the BJP has a problem with the (Congress-AAP) alliance, then why are they in alliance at the centre? They have 240 (seats). They should sit in the opposition… We are moving ahead with the INDIA Alliance parties with strength… If they (the BJP) are against the alliance, then they should also sit in opposition,” he said.

Meanwhile, just two days after joining the Congress party, Vinesh started her election campaign in the Jind region of Haryana on Sunday.

On Friday, Phogat and wrestler Bajrang Punia joined Congress just one month before the Haryana Assembly Elections.

Within hours of joining the party, Phogat was fielded as a party candidate from the Julana Assembly Constituency. Whereas Punia was appointed as the working president of the All India Kisan Congress.

Punia won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, while Vinesh Phogat became the first woman wrestler to reach the Olympics final in Paris last month. The wrestlers resigned from their respective positions in Northern Railways earlier on that day.

The voting for the 90-member legislative assembly in Haryana will be held on October 5 and the last date for filing nominations is September 12. The counting of votes will be held on October 8. (ANI)
