Haryana assembly elections

Haryana Polls: Free Electricity, MSP, Caste Census, Key Highlights Of Cong Manifesto

Ahead of the Haryana assembly elections, the Congress Party on Saturday released its manifesto with major promises ranging from free electricity, free medical treatment, financial assistance to women, MSP guarantee to the farmers and conducting caste census in the state.

The manifesto was released in the presence of Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda, former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) President Udai Bhan.

In the major highlights of the manifesto, the Congress party has promised to provide 300 units of free electricity and free medical treatment up to Rs 25 lakhs to every family in Haryana.

On similar lines as Madhya Pradesh’s ‘Ladli Behen Yojana’ and Maharashtra’s ‘Ladki Behen Yojana’, the Congress has also promised to provide Rs 2000 per month to women, aged 18-60 in the state. The manifesto also promises to provide Rs 500 for Gas cylinders.

Just like the Lok Sabha elections, Congress has promised a legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price for crops (MSP) and immediate compensation for crops. The Congress party said that they would form a farmer commission and give subsidies on diesel to farmers.

In its manifesto, the Congress promised to provide a plot of 200 yards of land and a house with two rooms to the poor section of the society in the state.

Another major highlight of the manifesto is the promise to conduct a caste-based survey in the state — an idea the Congress party has long been voicing for. Additionally, the party has said that it will increase the limit of the creamy layer to Rs 10 lakhs.

Congress has promised to give 2 lakhs permanent jobs to youths and promised to make the state free from drug-free.

In contrary to the Centre, the Congress has promised to restore the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). To promote social justice, the party has promised to give Rs 6000 to senior citizens, handicapped and widows under Budhapa Pension, Divyang Pension and Vidhwa Pension respectively.

Congress leader Geeta Bhukkal said, “We talk about giving a safe Haryana in our manifesto. We will build a university in Kurukshetra in the name of Guru Govind Singh Ji. We will also work to give respect to Punjabi language. We will build a university in Mewat.”

At the launch event of the manifesto, Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda said that the manifesto was created after a lot of hard work. He conveyed that a lot of things in the manifesto have been taken from Rajasthan and several other states.

Hooda said, “This manifesto has been made after a lot of hard works and I congratulate the chairperson of the manifesto Geeta Ji and all the members. We learnt a lot of things from Rajasthan when Ashok Gehlot was the Chief Minister. we have researched from all the states.”

Haryana goes to the polls on October 5 to elect a 90-member state legislative assembly to form its next government, with the counting set to take place on October 8.

In 2019, the BJP emerged as the single-largest party with 40 seats. Congress won 30 seats. (ANI)

Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah Israel

Israel Confirms Killing Of Hezbollah Leader Nasrallah

Israel has confirmed the killing of top Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in the airstrikes carried out by the Israeli military in Beirut.

In a statement, the Israel Defence Forces said, “Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorize the world.”

The IDF said that alongside Nasrallah, the commander of Hezbollah’s so-called Southern Front, Ali Karaki, was also killed, along with other commanders, Times of Israel reported.

Nasrallah was targeted on Friday at Hezbollah’s main headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold known as the Dahiyeh. The headquarters is underground, beneath residential buildings in the Dahiyeh, the IDF says.

“The strike was carried out while the top brass of Hezbollah were at their headquarters and engaged in coordinating terror activities against the citizens of the State of Israel,” the Israeli military said

The IDF also said that dozens of anti-ship missiles stored by Hezbollah under buildings in the Lebanese capital of Beirut were also destroyed in Israeli airstrikes overnight.

Hezbollah was known by the IDF to be in possession of the Chinese C-704 and C802 missiles, as well as the Iranian Ghader, which have ranges of up to around 200 kilometres, as reported by Times of Israel.

Following the announcement of Nasrallah’s killing, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi said that Israel will reach anyone who threatens the country and its citizens.

“The is not the end of the tools in the toolbox. The message is simple, to anyone who threatens the citizens of the State of Israel, we will know how to get to them,” he says.

Israel on Friday carried out a precision strike against Hezbollah’s central headquarters, located beneath residential buildings in Beirut’s Dahieh.

Notably, the strikes were carried out on the same day, when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, issued a stern warning to Iran and the “proxies of Tehran,” there is “no place” in Iran, where the “long arms” of Israel cannot reach, while adding that it is true for the “entire Middle East.”

During his address at the 79th United Nations General Assembly, Netanyahu stated that the war with Hamas can end if the latter lays arms and releases the hostages, while asserting that Israel will continue its fight until it achieves “total victory.”

Israel has continued striking Hezbollah in Lebanon to counter the ‘threats’, the Iran-backed group poses to Israel with repeated strikes in northern Israel.

As the conflict heads towards escalation, all major countries have called for a ceasefire and hostage deal, while also stressing for a two-state solution as a means to achieve durable and sustainable peace in the region. (ANI)

Department of Flood Forecasting Division Nepal

Flood Alert In Nepal After Heavy Rainfall, Swelling Rivers

The Department of Flood Forecasting Division, Nepal, issues a flood alert for various parts of the country, warning people that the water levels of various rivers will continue to rise following heavy rainfall, asking them to exercise caution.

In a press release, the Department of Flood Forecasting Division said that the main affected areas include the rivers towards west of Arun Basin (Sankhuwasabha District) to Banganga (Kapilvastu District) (also including Arun, Dudhkoshi, Sunkoshi, Bagmati, Narayani, Tinau, Banganga and their tributaries).

Roads and houses across Nepal were severely inundated due to incessant rainfall.

The release further said, “A significant flood warning for the next 24 hours is in effect for the rivers west of the Arun Basin until Banganga Basin. Almost all monitored rivers in the region have exceeded warning levels, with many approaching critical danger levels.”

It added, “Current observations indicate that Sunkoshi and Bagmati Rivers are already above danger levels and continuing to rise; while Arun, Dudhkoshi, Narayani, Tinau, and Banganga rivers have crossed warning thresholds and are escalating.”

On weather conditions, the Department of Flood Forecasting Division said that continuous rainfall is being reported in the catchment areas of each river, with a forecast of additional heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours. “This persistent precipitation is expected to exacerbate the flooding situation,” it added.

UN India Pakistan

Travesty, Hypocrisy At Its Worst: India Hits Back Pakistan Over J-K

India termed it a “travesty” that Pakistan, which has “a global reputation for terrorism,” has the “audacity to attack” the world’s largest democracy and raise the issue of Jammu and Kashmir on the platform of the United Nations.

The First Secretary, Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, Bhavika Mangalanandan on Friday (local time) called out Pakistan’s “hypocrisy” for raking up Kashmir and questioning the Jammu and Kashmir election in India’s Right to Replyat the ongoing 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

In a strong rebuttal to allegations made by Pakisan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in his address at UNGA, the Indian diplomat highlighted that Pakistan had used “terrorism to disrupt elections in Jammu and Kashmir”.

“The truth is that Pakistan covets our territory and has continuously used terrorism to disrupt elections in Jammu and Kashmir, an inalienable and integral part of India. A reference has been made to some proposals of strategic restraint,” she said.

“This assembly regrettably witnessed a travesty this morning. A country run by the military, with a global reputation for terrorism, narcotics, trade, and transnational crime has had the audacity to attack the world’s largest democracy. I speak about the reference to India in the speech of the Pakistani PM,” Mangalanandan said.

The Indian diplomat brought up the 2008 Mumbai attacks and the 2001 attack on the Indian Parliament.

“Pakistan has long employed cross-border terrorism as a weapon against its neighbours,” Mangalanandan stated. “It has attacked our parliament, our financial capital Mumbai, marketplaces, and pilgrimage routes. The list is long,” she said

“For such a country to speak about violence anywhere is hypocrisy at its worst. It is even more extraordinary for a country with a history of rigged elections to talk about political choices that too, in a democracy,” said the Indian diplomat.

Delivering India’s Right of Reply at the UNGA, she said, “There can be no compact with terrorism. In fact, Pakistan should realise that cross-border terrorism against India will inevitably invite consequences.”

Highlighting the Bangladesh genocide of 1971 she stated, “It is ridiculous that a nation that committed genocide in 1971 and which persecuted its minorities relentlessly even now, dare speak about intolerances and phobias. The world can see for itself what Pakistan really is. We are talking about a nation that for long hosted Osama bin Laden.”

“A country whose fingerprints are on so many terrorist incidents across the world, whose policies attract the dregs of many societies to make it their home. Perhaps it should come as no surprise that its PM would so speak in this hallowed hall. Yet we must make clear how unacceptable his words are to all of us. We know that Pakistan will seek to counter the truth with more lies. Repetition will change nothing. Our stand is clear and needs no reiteration,” said Mangalanandan.

Earlier on Friday, Sharif in his address to the UNGA said that India should reverse the Abrogation of Article 370 and enter into a dialogue with Pakistan for “peaceful” resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir issue.

“Let me state in no uncertain terms, Pakistan will respond most decisively to any Indian aggression, therefore, to secure durable peace, India must reverse the unilateral and illegal measures it has taken since 5th of August 2019 and enter into a dialogue for a peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the UN Security resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people,” he claimed.

Shehbaz Sharif claimed that India was “engaged in massive expansion of its military capabilities,” which are essentially deployed against Pakistan.

“It (India) has engaged in massive expansion of its military capabilities, which are essentially deployed against Pakistan. Its war doctrines envisage a surprise attack and a limited war under the nuclear overhang. Thoughtlessly, India spurned Pakistan’s proposals for a mutual strategic restraint to regime. Its leadership has often threatened to cross the line of control and take over Azad Kashmir,” Shehbaz Sharif said.

Making a reference to the abrogation of Article 370, Shehbaz Sharif alleged that India has initiated unilateral illegal steps since August 5, 2019.

“Instead of moving towards peace, India has resiled from its commitments to implement the Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir. These resolutions mandate the people of Jammu and Kashmir to exercise their fundamental right to self-determination. Since 5th August 2019, India has initiated unilateral illegal steps to impose what its leaders honestly call a final solution for Jammu and Kashmir,” Shehbaz Sharif claimed.

India has already made it clear after the Pulwama attack in 2019 that it wants normal bilateral ties with Pakistan, adding that it is incumbent upon them to create a conducive environment free from terrorism and hostilities.

Moreover, India has repeatedly raised its concern over Pakistan’s support of cross-border terrorism and has asserted that terror and talks cannot go together. India has also provided evidence at various international forums of Pakistan’s support for terrorist groups. (ANI)

Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris Pledges To Revive Bipartisan Border Security Bill Blocked By Trump

US Vice President Kamala Harris has reaffirmed her commitment to border security, emphasising the need for stronger measures to combat illegal immigration and the fentanyl crisis. Harris criticised former President Donald Trump for blocking a comprehensive border security bill that had bipartisan support in Congress.

“Last December, I helped raise the rate of overtime pay for border agents,” Harris stated. “I strongly supported the comprehensive border security bill, written last year by a bipartisan group of senators, including one of the most conservative members of the United States Congress.”

The bill, which Harris described as “the strongest security bill we have seen in decades,” aimed to address several critical issues at the US southern border. It would have hired 1,500 more border agents and officers, installed 100 inspection machines to detect fentanyl, and expanded the number of immigration judges and asylum officers. Harris explained, “It would have allowed us to more quickly and effectively remove those who come here illegally.”

Despite being endorsed by the Border Patrol Union, the bill was ultimately derailed by Trump. “Donald Trump tanked it. He picked up the phone and called some friends in Congress and said stop the bill, because he prefers to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem,” Harris charged.

As a result of Trump’s interference, Harris contended that the border remains less secure today. “The American people deserve a President who cares more about border security than playing political games and their personal, political future.”

Harris pledged that, if elected President, she would revive the bill and sign it into law. “Even though Donald Trump tried to sabotage the border security bill, it is my pledge to you, that as President of the United States, I will bring it back up and proudly sign it into law.”

This comes amidst renewed debate on border security, as Trump’s administration previously secured a victory when the US Supreme Court allowed the use of $2.5 billion from the Department of Defence to construct parts of a border wall. Despite Congress refusing to provide the requested funds, the Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling allowed Trump to move forward with the controversial wall, a decision that has continued to fuel division on how best to secure the border.

Many lawmakers opposed the move, warning that diverting funds from the Pentagon would harm national security priorities. (ANI)

Workplace Stress is Common; So Are The Means To Tackle It

‘Workplace Stress is Common; So Are The Means To Tackle It’

Pervin Malhotra, a career counsellor with 25 years of experience, offers valuable insights into maintaining a work-life stress free balance. Her views:

Work stress these days is extremely common. We have heard many stories in the media and on social media platforms about many bright employees giving up on their career due to burnouts. Many of them opt out midway into their promising career graph because they are unable to cope with the pressure.

Well, if there is a problem, there must also be a solution. If there is work-related pressure, then there is a combination of strategies which can help mitigate, and even eliminate, this niggling problem. To start with, when you are given some project or targets in office, learn to prioritise it. Make a list of how to go about it. Try and complete the 20 percent work first and then tackle the rest of it. Be constantly aware that you should not be pulled up for deliverables. The primary tasks need to be finished first and delivered.

Then, hierarchy matters. You must know that delegating work will distribute it in the right manner and will also make it to the deadline. Distribute work to those it can be assigned to. Hand key tasks first. Prioritise them.

Time management is important. Breakdown tasks into slots. Finish all heavy work like research etc first and then get into the nitty gritty of the remaining work. This is called batch processing.

Use the Pareto principle. It applies where lot of tasks are seeking your attention at the same time. Here, the 80/20 rule is significant to determine what action will deliver the best benefits. It is a creative way of looking at your course of action and helps you organize your thoughts.

The Pomodoro Technique is mandatory. It is a method to manage your time where you take a five-minute break after focussed 25-minute work. But you have to be careful to not take a longer break than five minutes because then it will affect your chain of thoughts that might break or be lost. In those five minutes there is a lot you can do – have water, listen to music, get refreshed, chit-chat, say hello to colleagues, use the washroom, have a quick bite. It is a great way to improve your focus, cut out the distractions and prevent burnout.

These days lot of people work from home and end up working endlessly. Their time boundaries go for a toss. You need to create clearly defined boundaries in such a scenario especially with relation to time. Have set work timings, eat on time, be mindful of working from home. Just because you are working from home doesn’t mean you can keep working day and night and not have time for yourself, family or anything else.

Do breathing exercises. These eliminate stress in a big way. Do chair yoga. Stretch. Do pranayama. Keep it simple but move.

If it gets too toxic at your workplace, speak. Talk to your boss. Your colleagues. Communicate. Put forth your problem. Know your capability and say you can’t cope. It’s not the end of the world. Know that life is tough. Challenge yourself but don’t push beyond endurance. Each of us has a different physical and mental tolerance threshold. Physical exercise is a must. Try on the spot jogging. Your metabolism needs to be strong. Be careful of your diet.

Stay organised. Your desk must not be cluttered. Clear it at the end of each work day. Helps to keep your mind clear too. Clear your inbox. Declutter. If stress at work becomes overwhelming, seek help. Talk to parents, friends, therapists. Seek help from Helplines.

Stay positive. Learn to say NO. Leverage technology. And celebrate. Celebrate every small completed task, every deadline reached. In a large organisation, try and have a mentor. Get informal advice. He has been there longer than you. You will learn to tackle work and people from such a person.

As told to Deepa Gupta

Bare Life For Muslims In Assam Camps

Illegal Migration & Bare Life For Muslims In Assam Camps

A few months following the release of the initial list of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), the Assamese Census Commissioner and Registrar General of India jointly released a final list which designated over 19 lakh residents of Assam as undocumented migrants. Concerned citizens, activists, and academics have written on various platforms about the plight of the “stateless people”, highlighting a humanitarian crisis in Assam. The current political climate also makes it clear that Muslims, who make up the bulk of those who will be left out in the register, would suffer a worse fate than Hindus.

Detention, the threat of deportation, and human rights violations are looming large over the life of a large chunk population in Assam. It has to be noted that detention centers were set up even before the NRC publication as many doubtful voters (D-voters) who failed to prove citizenship before the Foreigners Tribunal had been sent to these centers. Individual stories were coming up even then from those who came under the scanner of D-voters, their humiliating experience, their struggle to handle the legal process and paperwork, and the errors and arbitrariness of the whole process that made their lives hell. Now, the publication of a final list is about a massive crisis of human rights violations in the entire state. Suicide cases among the excluded have surfaced, only to confirm that NRC is a matter of life and death for many.

Let us examine the history of perpetual violence against the migrant population, especially Muslims in Assam.

Violent Ethnic Politics and the Illegality of Migration

We must prioritize addressing “migrant illegality” above the reality of illegal movement to comprehend the horrifying experiences of today’s migrant population. (De Genova 2002). It is the “illegality” of the migrant population constructed through various discursive forms that led to an overpowering denunciation of the Bengali-speaking population, especially of Muslims, in the past five decades in Assam.

This statistically substantial group has been identified since the 1970s as not really belonging to the country, notwithstanding uncertainties surrounding the reality of migration. Assam has a long history of migration dating back to the colonial era, but “migrant illegality” really became apparent in the state after Bangladesh’s independence in 1971 and the Assam Movement, which was the anti-immigration movement that followed. The most devastating outcome of the Assam Movement was the Nellie massacre of 1983, which took place in the Nagaon district of Assam during the peak of the agitation. The horrific tragedy took place right before the Assam state assembly election, which a large portion of the populace boycotted because of the unsolved migration crisis from Bangladesh. There was protracted violence as the ethnic groups were split upon participation in the election. Plain tribes such as the Bodos, the Kochs, and the Bengali-speaking Muslims participated in the election.

In contrast, the majority of the Hindu Assamese tribes, such as Tiwa, abstained from voting, and many villages in Assam witnessed fierce attacks between the polarised groups, resulting in killing and large-scale atrocities. In the Nellie massacre, the Tiwa tribes in the area, aided by Assamese Hindus, attacked and killed almost 2,000 Muslim peasants in one day. While it is often acknowledged that RSS and the indigenous people in Assam harbored long-standing animosity towards one other, several academics have shown how Sangh and other Hindu religious organizations played a significant role in it (Guhain 1985; Dasgupta and Guha 1985).

The most shocking aspect of the massacre is the impunity given to the culprits, as not even a single person was punished for this act. It is necessary to see the Nellie massacre as the pinnacle of sovereignty, a dominating group of people using their power to kill their opponents without hesitation. If the state does not have any monopoly over violence in the contemporary world; ethnic violence can become legitimate, especially when their enemies are “unwanted” populations produced by the sovereign power (van Holdt 2013).

Since the 1990s, there has been a shift in terms of the perpetrators of violence in Assam. The broader context of this shift is the violent turn of the long-term assertion of marginalized Bodo tribes for a separate state. Although the state and Assamese Hindus were initially the targets of Bodo militants, the violence eventually shifted towards the Muslim community residing in the Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) regions of Assam, and it still occurs today. While Bodos also suffered in several communities in the BTAD zone, Muslims were the target of widespread militant attacks and expulsion during the most recent violent incidents in 2012 and 2014. The Khagrabari massacre of 2014, where 38 Muslims were killed at the hands of militants on a single day, stands as the most heinous incident of all.

These violent events are erroneously seen as communal conflict by the media and politicians simply because Muslims were on the enemy side, even though they were victims of brutality in the form of death, grave injuries, loss of property, and displacement.

Detention Camps

While lakhs of human beings are going through detention camps in Assam today, little has been stated about Muslim camps already present in Assam since the 1980s. While the dying camp is the authentic mannequin for the excluded population, one can locate mainly remedy camps in locations like India, the place where the kingdom is anticipated to guard the displaced and violence affected. Our settings give rise to a complex and wide range of camps: riots, forced migration, and displacement resulted in the establishment of treatment camps, prison camps, refugee camps, and rehabilitation camps (Datta 2016). However, what do the alleviation camps that had been set up in Assam in a number of episodes of violence over the previous few a long time inform us?

The camps prevailing in Assam for many years characterize the epitome of the Muslim journey of violence and marginalization. After the Nellie Massacre of 1983, more than 65,000 Muslims became homeless and took refuge (Makiko 2013). There have been fifty-three camps set up after violence throughout the state, and many refused to go again to their unique locations (ibid). The violence after the Nineties in the present-day BTAD place has led to the placing up of many camps in the region. The sequence of violence commenced on October 7, 1993. They persevered until October 11, 1993, in a variety of components of the Bodo-dominated districts such as Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, and Chirang, which witnessed huge killings, injuries, destruction of houses, and large-scale fleeing of humans from their unique habitat even to very faraway places.

It is horrifying that a camp set up for transient comfort via the kingdom continues to exist even today. Apart from this, historical Muslim camps in Bordup, Garogaon, Salabila, and Bangalduba proceed to refuge landless Muslims. Camp dwellers are struggling with poverty and diseases. Most of the camps are handled with negligence, and the inhabitants are in no way rehabilitated. Instead, they are compelled to be in the camp to live a depressing life.

There are new camps set up in locations where violence befell in the recent past. On 1 and 2 May 2014, Bodo militants carried out the worst structure of carnage in Kokrajhar, Baksa, Chirang, and different components of the BTAD areas in Assam. On 2  May  2014, the militants, alongside the energetic participation of woodland guards of the Bodo Territorial Council, carried out a meticulously deliberate assault in which 38 humans were killed, and the complete village of Khagrabari used to be set ablaze. The occurrence of distinctive camps of Muslims unfolding throughout a range of components of Assam over decades, particularly those in the Bodoland region, shows that Muslims have been decreased to the “bare life.”

The nation makes such camps in a focused area for protection and safety. But, camps are hotspots for structural violence, destitution, illness, unemployment, illiteracy, exclusion from state regulations which puts camp residents in danger of being “exposed to death.” In other words, the “biopolitics of camps” and confinement of a populace into an area in the identity of governing the violence affected normalize all types of violence.

To conclude, now that the nation has statistically hooked up a massive chunk of the populace as unworthy of the country, the political value of a populace is definitely erased. Symbolic violence of the state-driven enumeration, the chance of detention, and “deportability” infuse fear, agony, and uncertainty among the migrants. The words of Hannah Arendt become extremely relevant in this context: “The tragedy of the oppressed is not that they are denied the opportunity to live, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, or equality before laws and the freedom of speech that were intended to address issues within specific communities—rather, it is that they are no longer a part of any community at all.

Mahima also shared that this new phase of her life feels like a “restart”, as she has done more films after her recovery.

“You just gave me a restart. You know, one would never imagine restarting after giving up on their looks, their hair, as an actor. This is a new way to restart my career. I’ve done three, four more films after that,” she said.

Along with the video, Anupam added a beautiful caption that reads, “It was during the shooting of #TheSignature when the video of #MahimaChaudhry with me in a bald look went viral. That was the first time she went public about being a #BreastCancer survivor! Two years later, we are promoting our film. And I want to say it loudly that Mahima is undoubtedly one of the bravest human beings I have ever met. She, her smile, and her courage are beautiful and infectious! Her performance in our film is BRILLIANT! Bravo my dearest! May God give you all the happiness, long and healthy life. Love and prayers always.”

The Signature explores the emotional trials of a devoted husband, essayed by Anupam Kher as he grapples with a life-altering crisis.

Produced by KC Bokadia and Anupam Kher Studio, the film features an impressive cast of Mahima Chaudhry, Neena Kulkarni, Annu Kapoor, and Ranvir Shorey.

The film follows Arvind (Anupam Kher), whose life is turned upside down when his wife collapses at the airport just before an anticipated trip.

The film is set to premiere on ZEE5 on October 4, offering viewers a heartfelt narrative of love, sacrifice, and resilience. (ANI)
