BJP Calls Kejriwal Resignation A PR Stunt

BJP Calls Kejriwal’s Resignation Move A ‘PR Stunt’

As soon as Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday announced his intent to resign as Delhi CM in two days, BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari termed it a “PR stunt” and said he is doing this to restore his image.

Bhandari further said that Kejriwal wants to apply Sonia Gandhi’s model, where she made Manmohan Singh a dummy Prime Minister and ran the government from behind the scenes.

“This is a PR stunt of Arvind Kejriwal. He has understood that his image among the people of Delhi is not of an honest leader but of a corrupt leader, today Aam Aadmi Party is known across the country as a corrupt party. Under his PR stunt, he wants to restore his image…It is clear that he wants to apply the Sonia Gandhi model, where she made Manmohan Singh a dummy Prime Minister and ran the government from behind the scenes. They have understood today that the Aam Aadmi Party is losing the Delhi elections and the people of Delhi cannot vote in their name, so they want to make someone else a scapegoat,” Bhandari said.

BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that Arvind Kejriwal is not sacrificing anything, as, according to the Supreme Court’s order, he is forced to resign from the post of Chief Minister.

Sirsa further alleged that Kejriwal had asked for two days just to convince all MLAs to make his wife the Chief Minister of Delhi.

“Arvind Kejriwal has announced that he will resign after two days and become the CM again when he gets a verdict from the people… This is not a sacrifice, the Supreme Court has said in the order that he cannot go near the CM’s chair and cannot sign any files. Hence, you don’t have an option, you are forced to resign because of the SC order. The people gave their verdict 3 months ago when you asked ‘jail or bail’, you lost all 7 (Lok Sabha seats in Delhi) and were sent to jail… Now he has asked for a two-day time because he is convincing all MLAs to make his wife the CM… He is forced to leave his chair because he is involved in the liquor scam,” Sirsa said.

In a major move, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal said on Sunday that he will resign from the position of Chief Minister after two days and won’t sit on the chair of CM, until the public of Delhi declares him “honest.”

Kejriwal further said that if the public votes for him, it will give him a certificate for his honesty. He also said he would ask for early polls along with the state of Maharashtra.

Addressing the party workers at the AAP office, CM Arvind Kejriwal said, “I am going to resign from the CM position after two days. I will not sit on the CM chair until the people give their verdict. I will go to every house and street and not sit on the CM chair till I get a verdict from the people. I will not sit on the CM post until the public announces its decision. Elections are after a few months. If you think Kejriwal is honest, then vote for me, I will take over as CM after the elections. If you think I am not, don’t vote. Your vote will be a certificate for my honesty, then only I will sit on the post of CM.”

Kejriwal was released from Tihar Jail on Friday evening, hours after the Supreme Court granted him bail in a corruption case related to the alleged Delhi Excise Policy scam. (ANI)

CBI Arrests In Kolkata Doctor Death CAse

Kolkata Rape-Murder: RG Kar Ex-Principal, Tala Police SHO Produced In Court

Former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh and Tala Police Station officer-in-charge, Abhijit Mondal, were produced in Sealdah Court on Sunday.

Both Ghosh and Mondal were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on Saturday in connection with the rape and murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata.

This development comes amid mounting pressure on the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government, over the brutal rape-murder case.

Earlier on Saturday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Swasthya Bhawan to meet the protesting doctors, assuring them that their demands would be addressed and that action would be taken against those responsible.

Speaking with the doctors, the Chief Minister expressed her concern over their situation, stating that she had been losing sleep over their protest in the rain.

“I have been a student leader myself and have struggled a lot in life, so I understand your situation. I am not concerned about my position. It rained all night while you were protesting, and I was worried… I will review your demands. I don’t run the government alone; I will consult senior officials and find a solution. Whoever is guilty will be punished. I ask for some time. The state government will not take any action against you,” she said.

She further urged the protesting doctors to return to work, saying, “I request you to resume work. All the work related to the development, infrastructure, and security of the hospital has begun and will continue.”

People and doctors have been protesting the brutal rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The victim was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

The incident has sparked a war of words between the BJP and the state government, with the BJP demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. (ANI)

Farooq Abdullah

Those Who Once Chanted ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ Are Now BJP Allies: Farooq

Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and National Conference (NC) leader Farooq Abdullah on Sunday targeted the BJP-led coalition government, saying those who once raised “Pakistan Zindabad” slogans now align with the party.

Replying to allegations that the unrest in Kashmir was a result of the 1987 election rigging, Dr Farooq Abdullah replied, “We didn’t create separatists; Pakistan did.”

He further added, “Those who previously raised slogans like ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ have now aligned themselves with the BJP.”

When asked about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s view that if the NC-Congress alliance comes to power, they will trigger terrorism again in the valley, Farooq Abdullah hit back, saying, “They have been ruling Jammu and Kashmir for 5 years; they always blamed Article 370 for terrorism, but now there is no Article 370; why does terrorism still continue? Where are all the weapons coming from?”

Abdullah also questioned Engineer Rashid’s release from jail just before the assembly election and claimed that Rashid is an ally of the BJP and RSS.

“Why was Engineer Rashid released right before the elections? So that he could divide the Muslims, suppress the voice of Muslims. He is an ally of the BJP and RSS,” he said.

The elections in Jammu and Kashmir are scheduled to be held on September 18, September 25 and October 1. The counting will take place on October 8.

Congress and the National Conference are fighting the assembly polls in alliance. While NC will contest 51 of 90 seats, Congress will fight 32 with the two parties also agreeing to a friendly contest on some seats. A few seats have been left for smaller allies.

These are the first assembly polls to be held in Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370. There are a total number of 90 Assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir, out of which 7 seats are reserved for SCs and 9 seats are reserved for STs.

According to the Election Commission of India, Jammu and Kashmir has 88.06 lakh eligible electors.

In the previous Assembly elections, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won 28 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 25, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) won 15, and the Congress won 12. (ANI)

BJP Fantasy Story Liquor Scam

BJP Scripted A Fantasy Story Called Liquor Scam: Sisodia

Lashing out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), AAP leader and former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said that the BJP drafted a fantasy story called ‘liquor scam’ and those stories were proved wrong in the Supreme Court.

“The BJP drafted a fantasy story named the ‘Liquor Scam’. The Supreme Court gave bail to Arvind Kejriwal and ended that story… It is a happy ending for us and a sad ending for the BJP. They thought they would keep Arvind Kejriwal jailed till the Delhi elections, but their stories were proven to be wrong in the court, and today Arvind Kejriwal and I are out of jail,” said Sisodia.

Delhi Minister Atishi said that it has been proven that AAP is the only party that scares the BJP.

“AAP has gone through a tough time after the BJP government tried its best to suppress the AAP and break it apart… Today, it has been proven that AAP is the only party which scares BJP… Truth has prevailed…” said Atishi.

Another Delhi minister and AAP leader, Gopal Rai, said that AAP has been fighting against the dictatorship since two years and that AAP workers have been waiting for directions from Kejriwal.

“The whole party (AAP) was fighting against the dictatorship for the last 2 years. Today, everyone has come out of jail. Every worker, MLA, and official is waiting for the directions of the CM (Arvind Kejriwal),” said Gopal Rai.

Earlier on Saturday, Kejriwal held a meeting with senior party leaders in which discussions were held on various issues, including assembly polls in Haryana and party organisation in the national capital.

The meeting was held at the residence of senior AAP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. Among those present were party leaders Sanjay Singh and Gopal Rai.

Earlier, Kejriwal held a roadshow from Chandgiram Akhara to his official residence after being released from jail.

He was released from Tihar Jail on Friday evening, hours after the Supreme Court granted him bail in a corruption case related to the alleged Delhi Excise Policy scam.

Kejriwal’s lawyers furnished surety bonds for his release before the special CBI judge, citing the Supreme Court ruling.

Upon his release, Kejriwal was welcomed by a large crowd of AAP leaders and supporters outside the Tihar jail. His supporters celebrated outside his residence with firecrackers. (ANI)

Kejriwal to Resign in Two Days

Kejriwal To Resign In Two Days, Calls For Early Elections

“The elections are supposed to be held in February. I demand elections be held in November with Maharashtra elections… Till elections are held, someone else from the party will be the Chief Minister. In the next 2-3 days, a meeting of the MLAs will be held, where the next CM will be decided,” Kejriwal further said.

Kejriwal also accused the central government of adopting a formula of filing cases against CM’s of states where the BJP has lost elections.

“People ask why Kejriwal did not resign from jail. He did not resign because I wanted to save democracy… They have a new formula now; they file cases against the CM of opposition parties in the states where they lost elections. They have filed cases against Siddaramaiah, and Pinarayi Vijayan… The Supreme Court has asked why the government cannot be run from jail… I appeal to all non-BJP CMs that if there is a case against you, do not resign. If the people of Delhi feel that Kejriwal is dishonest, then I will not remain on the CM post even for a minute. My bank account is empty today…I told the lawyers that I do not want to take the CM post until the case is over. The lawyers said that this will last for more than ten years. Now I am in your court. I ask you whether Kejriwal is honest or dishonest. I will not sit on the CM post until the public announces its decision,” Arvind Kejriwal said.

Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday arrived at the party office in Delhi. Notably, it is his first visit after being released from the Tihar jail on Friday night.

Earlier on Saturday, Kejriwal held a meeting with senior party leaders in which discussions were held on various issues, including assembly polls in Haryana and party organisation in the national capital.

Is This The America the World Wants To See

Is This the America the World Wants to See?

Nearly 70 million people are said to have tuned in to watch last week’s debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, the two contenders for the post of the world’s most important and most powerful head of state–President of the USA. There’s less than two months left for the election and the nail bitingly close contest promises to go down to the wire.

The aftermath of the debate, widely watched in the US as well as around the world, has spawned countless analyses, reactions, and opinions. The American mainstream media has declared that Harris, a Democrat who is the incumbent US Vice-President, trounced former President Trump and emerged as the clear winner in the 90-minute moderated debate, aired by the Disney-owned news channel, ABC.

To be sure, Harris, 59, did appear to score over her rival, Trump, 78. Calm and in control, she appeared more presidential than her rival whose demeanour often seemed like that of a self-centred narcissist with an unhinged mind who is living in his world of self-altered reality.

It was the substance of the debate that raised more important issues. In debates such as these, the participants usually disappoint because they don’t directly answer the questions they are asked but instead veer off on tangents. So it was with this debate as well.

To kick off the debate, one of the two moderators asked Harris a question about the economy, a serious concern among Americans, many of whom have been reeling from the effects of high inflation. She was asked whether she believed that Americans were better off since President Joe Biden and she were elected to office in 2020. She dodged the question. Instead she replied by saying that she was raised as a middle-class kid and that she has “a plan for lifting up the middle-class and working people of America”, which included a leg-up for first-time house buyers, child support, and tax reliefs for small businesses. She contrasted that with Trump’s plan, which, according to her, would raise tariffs and, therefore, prices of everyday goods, and provide tax cuts for the very rich.

The question she was asked was whether she thought Americans were worse off after four years since the Biden regime came to power. She didn’t answer that.

Trump did not do better. When his turn came, he briefly justified tariffs on imports from countries such as China but quickly changed the focus to what has now become a regular trope in his campaign speeches: illegal immigration. He said millions of people from mental institutions and prisons in other countries were flooding into the United States and many of them were committing crimes and stealing jobs because of the benign policies of Harris and her boss, President Biden.

That is an example of the vein in which the debate ran on: allegations, counter allegations, and a repeat of that sequence. Trump talked about things that were either nonsensical or completely fabricated. He said illegal immigrants were stealing people’s pet dogs and cats and eating them. He said he knows the head of the Taliban, someone he named as Abdul (a figment of his imagination because no one like that exists). And that he could stop Russia’s war in Ukraine in days because he knew Vladimir Putin. Trump also alleged that Harris was a Marxist because her academic father was one.

Compared to Trump’s performance, Harris certainly came out as being more sensible and, indeed, sane but then that bar was stupendously low.

Yet what Harris affirmed by maintaining dignity and form was offset by her apparent lack of grasp on policy. Economics is clearly not the former district attorney’s strong point. Neither is foreign affairs. She failed to spell out what her economic policy would be like and she appeared shaky on the complex issue of what the US’ role should be in Ukraine or in the Middle East.

The most shocking aspect of the debate was the topics that the two candidates appeared to focus on. Some of the subjects were so ludicrous that it was difficult to believe that one of these two persons would lead America for the next four years. For example, considerable time was spent by both candidates in comparing the crowd sizes at each of their campaign rallies.

More serious topics included the policies on abortion and women’s reproductive rights–Trump would not say whether if he was elected President he would veto an anti-abortion bill; Harris reiterated her pro-abortion stance. The issue of illegal immigration, mainly via the southern border of the US, loomed large in the debate, accounting for a disproportionately big part of the 90 minutes.

ALSO READ: Can Kamala Harris Turn Euphoria Into Votes?

Admittedly, abortion and illegal immigration are two of the most contentious issues in the forthcoming elections. Much of America is concerned about them. So are economy-related issues such as inflation and employment. Yet, the debate seemed to avoid touching other equally important subjects. Such as America’s foreign policy.

What, for instance, will America’s stance on NATO be if either Harris or Trump becomes President? Europe is keenly interested in knowing that. Next February, it will be three years since Russia invaded Ukraine and latest tidings suggest the conflagration could blow up to involve other parts of Europe. In the Middle East, Israel shows no signs of heading towards a ceasefire and truce against Hamas. In fact, Iran’s involvement in the conflict is already imminent.

The US plays a lead role in NATO. Would that change under its new regime? Harris’ policy on NATO or Israel is fuzzy and unarticulated. Trump’s is one of brash over-confidence: he claims he can quell both conflicts in days.

With a GDP of more than $28 trillion, the US economy is nearly as large as the next four economies (China, Japan, Germany, and India) put together. Its military clout is by far the most powerful in the world. Its foreign policies have far-reaching repercussions in most parts of the world.

In a scenario where China’s rise and its alliances with countries such as Russia, Iran, and North Korea, have begun to change the Western bloc-dominated world order, what will America’s future moves look like? Neither Trump nor Harris seemed to have a cogent vision for that. Neither did the moderators of the debate ask them for it.

US’ foreign policy is not only about episodic events that are currently rocking the world–such as Ukraine and the Middle East. What about South Asia and Africa, and the rise of the far right in Europe? What is the world’s largest and most powerful nation’s view on that?

Recently, Turkey, a NATO member, expressed its intentions to join BRICS, a China and Russia dominated grouping of developing countries (including India) that has been ever expanding and emerging as a potentially powerful counterweight to the West. How would the new regime in the US deal with that?

For observers looking for answers to questions such as those, the debate gave them none. Instead, the two candidates–one posed and dignified, the other deranged and incoherent–took swipes at each other about things that, if you think about them, really don’t matter to anyone. Is this the future America that the world wants to see?

CBI Arrests In Kolkata Doctor Death CAse

CBI Arrests RG Kar Ex-Principal And Tala Police SHO In Rape-Death Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, along with Abhijit Mondal, the officer-in-charge of Tala police station, in connection with the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in the state capital.

“The CBI special crime branch arrested Tala police station officer incharge Abhijit Mondal in connection with the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case. The official was nabbed on accusations for delay in registering the FIR,” said sources.

As per the sources, the CBI special crime branch also arrested RG Kar Medical College and Hospital former principal Sandip Ghosh in connection with the rape and murder case. He was arrested for misleading the investigation and for his alleged role in the destruction of evidence by not declaring the death of the victim immediately and the considerable delay in registration of the FIR.”

Meanwhile, junior doctors protesting at the Swasthya Bhavan celebrated the step and could be seen singing at the protest site.

Speaking about the arrests, a junior doctor told ANI, “We have been demanding the arrest of the former principal of the college, Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal, officer-in-charge of Tala police station, for their involvement in tampering with the evidence. We are very happy as the CBI has arrested them. The CBI should arrest others who have tampered with the evidence.”

Earlier in the day, the delegation of junior doctors met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee left from her residence in Kolkata after the meeting between them and the CM failed for the second time.

Junior doctors demanded live streaming of the meeting, to which the Chief Minister said live streaming cannot be allowed as the matter is sub-judice.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday said that the request for ‘live streaming’ of her meeting with the protesting doctors could not be met due to the ongoing legal proceedings of the RG Kar Medical College Hospital rape and murder case in the Supreme Court.

The West Bengal Chief Minister further requested the doctors to cooperate and assured them of providing them with a recording of the meeting.

“I assure you that whatever recording will be done, it will be given to you. Accept my request and join the meeting. If you people do not want to come to the meeting, then please come inside the residence, have tea and then proceed to leave,” said Banerjee.

According to the Information and Cultural Affairs Department, WB government, Mamata Banerjee spoke to the junior doctors who were standing at the door of her residence and stated the reason for declining the live streaming.

“You all have been standing in the rain for 2 hours. I am waiting for you all. There is a case going on in the Supreme Court, so we cannot do live streaming. I assure you that whatever recording will be done, it will be given to you. Accept my request and join the meeting. If you people do not want to come to the meeting, then please come inside the residence, have tea and then proceed to leave,” said CM Banerjee.

“We will prepare the minutes of the meeting and give them to you. The recording will be given later. If you people did not want to attend the meeting, then why did you come? Why are you insulting like this? This is not the first time. I have said earlier also that the recording cannot be given today. It is not possible to accept all your demands,” CM Mamata Banerjee said.

This comes after the key meeting scheduled between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and protesting doctors at her residence hit a roadblock over livestreaming issues.

The junior doctors were firm on their demand that they would not participate in the meeting until live streaming was allowed. At the time of filing this report, the meeting had not started yet as 12 junior doctors from the 30-doctor delegation had stepped out to demand live streaming.

The West Bengal CM had earlier visited the agitating doctors at the Swasthya Bhawan in Salt Lake and appealed to them to resume work.West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee was scheduled to hold a meeting with junior doctors at 6 pm today (Saturday) at her residence, with a delegation of 15 representatives, informed West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant earlier in the day.

This comes after Mamata Banerjee visited the junior doctors’ protest site in front of Swasthya Bhaban, where she assured the doctors that she would address their demands and make efforts to fulfil them.

Earlier, while addressing the protesting doctors in front of Swasthya Bhaban, the West Bengal Chief Minister said that she was spending sleepless nights as the doctors were agitating on the road amid rains.

She had further urged the protesting doctors to return to work and said, “I request you to return to work. All the work related to the development, infrastructure, and security of the hospital has been started and will be done further.”

Meanwhile, in an effort to monitor the situation and ensure security, the Kolkata Police installed CCTV cameras at the protest site and surrounding areas.

The move comes as the junior doctors continued their protest, demanding justice and calling for enhanced safety measures at medical institutions, even after the Supreme Court set a deadline for doctors to resume work on Tuesday.

Earlier on September 13, junior doctors in Kolkata criticised the West Bengal Chief Minister for rejecting their request to live telecast a meeting and for not meeting with them.

They argued that their request was reasonable, given that parliamentary discussions and many administrative meetings are broadcast live.

The doctors expressed frustration over being asked to leave electronic gadgets outside the meeting hall, which prevented them from recording the proceedings.

The second-year postgraduate medical student was raped and murdered inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on August 9. (ANI)
