Malayalam actor Jayasurya

SIT Interrogates Jayasurya Over Sexual Assault Allegations

Malayalam actor Jayasurya has appeared before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for questioning regarding sexual assault allegations against him.

The interrogation took place on Tuesday at the Cantonment police station in Thiruvananthapuram.

The situation escalated following accusations from multiple female colleagues in the Malayalam film industry, coinciding with the release of the Hema Committee Report, which investigated claims of sexual harassment within the industry.

Two actresses have filed police complaints against Jayasurya, prompting legal action and public statements from the actor.

On September 1, during a social media post on his 46th birthday, Jayasurya addressed the allegations, stating that he was in the United States at the time.

“Due to my personal commitments, my family and I have been in America for the past month, and during this time, two false allegations on the grounds of sexual harassment were made against me,” he wrote.

The actor emphasized his intention to pursue legal remedies. “I have decided to move forward with this legally. My legal team will be looking after the rest of the proceedings regarding this case.”

Expressing his emotional turmoil, he added, “Quite naturally, it has shattered me, my family and everyone who has held me close.” Jayasurya reiterated his innocence, stating, “A lie always travels faster than the truth but I believe truth will prevail.”

One of the complainants, actor Sonia Malhar, recently detailed her experience, claiming that an incident occurred on the set of the film ‘Pigman’ in Thodupuzha.

“When I came out of the washroom, someone grabbed me. It was actor Jayasurya. I pushed him away. He apologized and told me that he wouldn’t repeat it and that we should continue as friends,” she recounted.

Malhar also discussed the backlash she faced on social media after sharing her story publicly.

Another actress, Minu Muneer, has also accused Jayasurya, alongside other prominent figures, of inappropriate conduct during their collaborations on various projects.

She alleged, “Once, as I was coming out from the toilet, Jayasurya hugged me from behind and even kissed me forcefully.”

Her claims prompted the registration of an FIR against Jayasurya, as well as another against actor Mukesh, a CPI (M) MLA, for similar allegations.

The Kerala Police confirmed that the second FIR against Jayasurya was filed under several sections of the Indian Penal Code related to assault and harassment. (ANI)

Atul Parchure

Jaywant, Shreyas Mourn demise of Atul Parchure

The Indian film fraternity is mourning the demise of veteran actor Atul Parchure who passed away on Monday after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Parchure’s death marks a significant loss to both the Marathi and Hindi film industries, where he had made a lasting impact through his diverse and memorable roles.

In an emotional response to this tragic event, actor Jaywant Wadkar shared his deep sorrow.

“What can I say? I don’t have words,” he told ANI recounting his long-standing friendship with Parchure.

Wadkar recalled his first collaboration with the late actor in a play during their school days.

“When he was in 9th standard, he acted in a play with me for the first time. The play’s name was ‘Tilak Ani Agarkar.’ It was a very famous play,” Wadkar reminisced, highlighting the enduring bond they shared throughout their careers.

“He has done a lot of shows. He has done a lot of shows in Marathi. Then, the way he has portrayed Pul Deshpande, no one has ever presented it like this,” Wadkar said.

Wadkar further reflected on Parchure’s dedication to his craft, noting, “He was also doing a show. After being diagnosed with cancer, he came out and did a show. Then performed.”

Despite his health challenges, Parchure’s passion for acting never waned. He had been rehearsing for a show titled “Suryachi Pillay,” and only days before his passing, he was optimistic about returning to the stage.

“He was also rehearsing for the show. And 8-10 days before that, there was a little problem. So the doctor called him and said that I have to do a little operation. So he did the operation. He was in the ICU. He had come out too. Pushkar, who is my friend, also works in it. So I kept asking him about his health. We were not allowed to meet him at that time,” the ‘Ka R Deva’ actor said.

His remarkable versatility as an actor was evident in his ability to capture audiences with both humour and depth.

“I have never seen such a fantastic actor like him,” Wadkar expressed, highlighting Parchure’s exceptional talent, particularly in portraying iconic characters like Pul Deshpande.

“I mean, really, I feel very bad. For us, a very good actor, a good friend has gone. That’s what I feel,” he said.

Numerous colleagues and friends from the Marathi film industry gathered to pay their final respects at the actor’s last rites.

Actor Shreyas Talpade also mourned the demise of Atul Parchure and said, “He was a very big actor. He has inspired almost all of us. He has inspired everyone in our generation. We grew up watching his work. So today, this is a big loss for all of us. It is extremely unfortunate.”

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Chief Raj Thackeray was among those in attendance.

Actor Arjun Kapoor also took to social media to express his condolences. “I never had a chance to work with him, but he always seemed to be such a likeable person no matter what role he played,” Kapoor wrote, adding, “He was taken by cancer despite fighting the disease for many years. May his soul rest in peace.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also voiced his grief, emphasizing the loss of the immense talent.

“The untimely death of Atul Parchure is painful. Sometimes making the audience laugh requires immense talent,” Shinde noted in a post on X.

He praised Parchure’s multifaceted contributions to drama, film, and television, stating, “He left his mark in all three fields of drama, film, and serials.”

Shinde specifically mentioned Parchure’s notable works, including “Tarun Turk Mhatare Ark” and “Natigoti,” emphasizing how deeply he resonated with audiences through his performances.

Parchure’s filmography spans numerous beloved films, such as “Navra Mazha Navsacha,” “Salaam-E-Ishq,” “Partner,” “All the Best: Fun Begins,” “Khatta Meetha,” “Bbuddah… Hoga Terra Baap,” and “Brave Heart.”

He was also well-known for his comedic appearances on “The Kapil Sharma Show,” which further endeared him to fans across India. (ANI)

Airtel SATCOM

Airtel Denies Reports Of Changing Stance On Spectrum Allocation For SATCOM

Airtel has denied reports that the telecom major has changed its stand on spectrum allocations for potential satellite communication companies including international ones like Elon Musk’s Starlink. A controversy was triggered when Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman Bharti Enterprises in his address at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024,that was innagurated today, stated that SATCOM companies should purchase spectrum like other telecom operators.

During his inaugural speech at the IMC, Mittal said “Those satellite companies who have ambitions to come into urban areas, serving elite retail customers just need to take the telecom licenses like everybody else be bound with the same conditions. They need to buy the spectrum as the telecom companies buy. They need to pay the license fee as the telecom companies do and also secure networks as telecom companies do”.

Responding to a query by ANI, Mittal said that a statement issued by Airtel said that six months ago the telecom company had written to the Department of Telecom and there is no question of Airtel changing its stand.

The March 2024 letter to the DoT supported administrative allocation of spectrum for SATCOM companies only under specific conditions like connecting the unconnected/rural/remote areas or maritime and aviation as also in situations of disaster management.

“Apropos, the recently released Telecommunications Act, 2023 has rightly included SATCOM in its ambit while assigning spectrum for SATCOM on an administrative basis. We continue to strongly support this approach,” Airtel informed the DoT.

The letter further adds “SATCOM will act as a complementary service to terrestrial communication services in bridging digital inclusion gap and/or servicing the specific use cases of non-retail customers such as defence, cellular backhaul or in rural and remote areas.”

“Accordingly, assignment of satellite spectrum on administrative basis can be done for such use cases. The only exception may be created for unhindered use by any government agency and for disaster management in any part of the country.”

The Akash Ambani-led Reliance Jio has also pitched for satellite companies to pay license fee and buy spectrum for their telecom services just like legacy telecom companies do. Telecom regulator TRAI has recommended that satellite broadband to potential SATCOM companies be allocated through administrative measures and not auctioned.

Elon Musk’s Starlink and global peers like Amazon’s Project Kuiper wants an administrative allocation of spectrum for satellite services. (ANI)

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed her grief on the assault of an Army Officer

EC Announces Bypoll For Wayanad; Priyanka To Make Election Debut

The Election Commission on Tuesday announced bypolls to Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala and Nanded seat in Maharashtra. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi is likely to make her election debut from Wayanad.

Wayanad seat was vacated by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after he was also elected to Lok Sabha from Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh in the general elections held earlier this year.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had announced in June that Rahul Gandhi will retain Raebareli, a traditional seat of the Gandhi family and vacate his Wayanad seat where the party will field Priyanka Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi had won Lok Sabha polls from Wayanad in 2019 and 2024 is now Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Wayanad will go to the polls on November 13 along with voting for bye-elections in 47 assembly seats across 15 states. The first phase of assembly polls in Jharkhand will also be held on November 13.

If Priyanka Gandhi wins Lok Sabha polls, she will be the third MP from the Gandhi family in the current Parliament.

Rahul Gandhi is Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Sonia Gandhi is a member of Rajya Sabha.

Priyanka Gandhi had taken care of family strongholds of Amethi and Raebareli before plunging in active politics. She has continued her links with the two constituencies.

After Kharge announced that Priyanka Gandhi will contest from Wayanad, she had said her decades-old association with Amethi and Raebareli will continue.

“I am very happy to be able to represent Wayanad and I will not let them feel his (Rahul Gandhi’s) absence. I will work hard and I will try my best to make everyone happy and be a good representative. I have a very old relationship with Raebareli and Amethi and it cannot be broken. I will also help my brother in Rae Bareli. We will both be present in Rae Bareli and Wayanad,” Priyanka Gandhi had said in presence of Kharge and her brother Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi had said both Raebareli and Wayanad will get two MPs.

“I want everyone in Wayanad to know that Priyanka is going to fight elections in Wayanad but I will be a frequent visitor to Wayanad and I will be available to the people of Wayanad and the commitments we have made will stand up to them and will to deliver all those commitments. I have an old relationship with Rae Bareli, I am happy that I will get to represent them again but it was a tough decision,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi also expressed confidence of Priyanka Gandhi winning from Wayanad.

“Priyanka Gandhi is going to fight the elections and I am confident that she is going to win the elections. The people of Wayanad can think that they have two members of the Parliament, one is my sister and the other is me. My doors are always open for the people of Wayanad, I love every single person in Wayanad,” he added.

The results for Wayanad seat along with other assembly and Lok Sabha seats will be declared on November 23. (ANI)

Anil Agarwal Has A Bone To Pick With Mining Policy

Why Anil Agarwal Has A Bone To Pick With Mining Policy

The boy from Bihar with humble beginnings who on his own admission had difficulty in conversing in English when he moved to the then Bombay in search of fortune is today among the leading lights of Indian industry with considerable ownership of assets here and abroad. He is the irrepressible Anil Agarwal, the promoter and driving force of the Vedanta Group with significant presence in sectors from aluminium to zinc to copper to iron ore mining to energy. While in zinc he enjoys monopoly status by virtue of his majority ownership of Hindustan Zinc (the government retains 29.5 per cent following divesting 64.9 per cent to Vedanta in tranches), Agarwal has the largest aluminium smelting capacity surpassing that of Hindalco and government owned Nalco.

Though an ardent admirer of prime minister Narendra Modi for his commitment to make India a developed country (Viksit Bharat) by 2047, coinciding with 100 years of Independence, Agarwal could at times also become a critic of the government. Trust him to have occasions to tell New Delhi where its policies, according to him, are not in alignment with realizing growth potential in oil and gas exploration and production and mining, particularly iron ore. At times Agarwal will go overboard in his disapproval of official policies relating to his areas of work.

This disposition of Agarwal once again became manifest when the other day Agarwal had a go against the government’s iron ore mines auction policy that has obliged the successful bidders to pay extraordinarily high auction premiums to governments of states where the mines are located. The phenomenon, he says, is found responsible for the “death” of the iron ore industry. In a post on X platform, Agarwal bemoans: “Could you run a business successfully if you have to share more than 100 per cent of your revenue with another party? I doubt if anyone would say yes. But this is the reality of India’s iron ore industry today. And it is dying.”

Agarwal like many others in the industry is nursing a grudge against intense competition for mines among bidders, including steel companies. Such competition obviously results in high auction bids that decide the premium the winning party will have to pay the concerned state government. A burden that will inevitably spell the ruin of mining groups, according to Agarwal.

Whatever their reservations about the premium, industry officials cannot contest the merits of auction of mines that ushered in transparency ending any kind of distribution of favour that was associated with the earlier regime of first come, first served. Even then Agarwal will contend that because of the high premium, “a well-meaning policy (read auction) has gone wrong.” Developing the point, he says: “The government had introduced auctions in mining for greater transparency. But when only limited blocks are on offer and so many steel manufacturers seek raw material security, there is a huge demand-supply mismatch and bid prices become massive.” India has more than a century old tradition of steelmakers owning iron ore mines to become self-reliant in this critical input.

The two shining examples are Tata Steel and IISCO (now part of SAIL). Public sector undertaking SAIL with ownership of five integrated mills and three special steel plants meets its full requirement of iron ore from its captive mines as Tata Steel does. But more recently Tata Steel had to buy ore from NMDC besides resorting to imports. Since the introduction of auction for blocks allocation, Tata Steel CEO and MD TV Narendran, unlike some of his peers, has not gone overboard in placing bids and then regret later. At the same time, since Tata Steel has targeted capacity growth to 40m tonnes by 2030, Narendran is expected to remain in hunt for new iron ore mines in order not to depend on procurement from outside.

In their search for raw material security other steel groups have had occasions to throw caution to the wind for new iron ore blocks as they come under the hammer. When Tata Steel acquired lossmaking Neelachal Ispat in July 2022 at a consideration of Rs12,100 crore, two important considerations for it were, the targeted company offered scope to expand capacity of long steel products to 10m tonnes in phases and good quality iron ore reserves of approximately 110m tonnes in Sundargarh and Keonjhar districts of Odisha. For compelling commercial consideration, all major steel groups in the country are constantly on the lookout for opportunities to pile up on reserves of iron ore. One obvious consideration is to seek protection from fluctuations in the steelmaking ingredient.

In a recent market survey, the Competition Commission of India has found that the number of iron ore mines captive to steel companies is on the rise. The mines ministry rebuttal, sharp and prompt, of Agarwal censure of high auction prices (the determinant of premium paid to the government) was expected. In its affirmation that auction premium is not paid out of total revenue of the company, the ministry tweet says: “No mining company in India shares 100% of company revenue with the Government! The auction premium paid by a company is a percentage of the average of the ex-mine prices of iron ore produced by all the mines in a state, excluding the expenditure made by the company outside lease boundary and on value addition for steel production.” The premium paid by captive mine owners is the least painful for steel groups since the share of iron ore in total production cost of steel is around 15 per cent.

For them, the trade-off could not be any better, for they will be paying “a small percentage of total value of steel produced as auction premium” securing them in the process assured supply of the mineral. In an attempt to disabuse the Agarwal theme of the industry withering under more than “100 per cent revenue sharing” burden, the ministry says “royalty and premium are part of cost of production and not something shared out of revenue/ profit.”  An aggrieved New Delhi is left with no option but to demolish Agarwal specious argument that the winning “bid is based on how much revenue you will share with the government. Since auctions were introduced, the average for iron ore is 118 per cent.”

Among his litany of charges on the subject is the combination of “a limited number of blocks (iron ore)” on offer with steel companies in pursuit of raw material security offering competition to merchant miners at the auction has caused a “huge demand-supply mismatch.” This is sending bid prices to stratospheric levels. The ministry will not accept that the high bids are because not enough blocks come under the hammer. It says since auction became the sole form of mines allocation for transparency and fairness, 119 iron ore blocks have been auctioned of which 34 blocks have been operationalised. While 21 more blocks are made ready to become operational in near future, a number of blocks are at various stages of auction process with as many as other 60 blocks received by various state governments from the mines ministry for auction.

ALSO READ: Mining Electoral Bonds To Curry Favours

Dismissing any notions of “limited blocks are on offer,” the ministry claims that the revenue sharing formula has proved to be an incentive for iron ore bearing states to offer more and more blocks at auction. Interestingly such is the pull of the auction system that states such as Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, which for very long have not figured in India’s iron ore map are now successfully auctioning newly discovered blocks. The ministry maintains that auction is the fairest way forward to grow production of iron ore, principally to meet the increasing demand of steel mills enhancing capacity.

Further, Agarwal has left the ministry miffed by his observation that high auction bids, resulting from competition, are the reason why “most of the blocks have not been operationalised. Operating companies are even considering returning some of the blocks because of unviability.” As one of the leading miners of iron ore, Agarwal, according to the government, should not be unaware that once a party has made the winning bid, it will be required to get a raft of statutory clearances, including relating to environment and forest. Moreover, land acquisition has its challenges. All this requires three to seven years, “depending on the level of exploration.” As auction process for most of the blocks was completed in the last three years, the ministry says another two to five years will be needed for their operationalisation.
