Maharashtra EVM

Chief EC Rubbishes Cong Charge Ahead Of Poll Date Announcement

As opposition parties once again raised the bogey of EVM manipulation ahaed of the Election Commission announcement on poll dates for Maharashtra and Jharkhand, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Tuesday said that the public has answered the questions by participating in voting.

Speaking to ANI, Kumar said “The public answers questions by participating in the voting. As far as the EVMs are concerned, they are 100 per cent foolproof. If they raise questions today again, we will tell them again.”

Earlier, Congress leader Rashid Alvi claimed that EVM’s could be manipulated citing the example of Israel hacking pagers of militant outfit Hezbollah.

“In Maharashtra, the opposition should put pressure to insist on voting by paper ballot and not EVMs. Otherwise, in Maharashtra, BJP govt and EC can do anything. If Israel can kill people by use of pagers and walkie-talkies, then where does EVM stand? The PM has very good relations with Israel. Israel is an expert in such things. EVM ka bada khel kahin bhi ho sakta hai aur uske liye BJP chunav se pehle yeh sab khel kar leti hai,” Rashid Alvi said.

Last week, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh submitted a memorandum to ECI, and said he hopes that the body takes cognizance of the issue and give appropriate instructions.

Taking to social media platform X, the party General Secretary in charge of communication, wrote, “On October 9, senior Congress party leaders submitted a memorandum full of complaints to the Election Commission. Taking it forward today, we have given an updated memorandum, highlighting serious and clear irregularities in the election process in 20 assembly constituencies of Haryana. We hope that the Election Commission will take cognizance of this and issue appropriate instructions.”

Congress leader Pawan Khera said that the party had sent a list of 20 seats in which the candidates had submitted their written and verbal complaints over the EVM counting votes in the Haryana Assembly elections.

Speaking to ANI, Khera said “We have sent a list of 20 seats to the Election Commission regarding which our candidates have submitted written and verbal complaints of 99 per cent battery charge. This issue was raised on the day of counting…This is a strange coincidence that the machines which displayed 99 per cent battery charge were the ones on which Congress was mostly made to lose. The machines with 60-70 per cent battery charge are the ones on which Congress won. Why did this happen?”

The Election Commission will announce the poll dates for Maharashtra and Jharkhand on Tuesday. (ANI)

India and Canada

India-Canada Ties Hit New Low After Expulsion Of Diplomats

India and Canada have been dealing with an unprecedented diplomatic crisis after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged that Indian government agents were involved in the killing of Nijjar in Canada. India has rejected Canada’s allegations, terming it “absurd” and “politically motivated.”

On Monday, Canada expelled six Indian diplomats and consular officials in connection with a probe of the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in 2023.

India has also announced its decision to expel six Canadian diplomats, which include Canada’s Acting High Commissioner in India, Steward Ross Wheeler, Deputy High Commissioner in India Patrick Hebert and First Secretary Marie Catherine Joly.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Commissioner, Mike Duheme on Monday (local time) claimed that they have information on certain criminal activity carried out by agents of the Indian government.

He said, “In the past few years and more recently, law enforcement agencies in Canada have successfully investigated and charged a significant number of individuals for their direct involvement in homicides, extortions & other criminal acts of violence. In addition, there have been well over a dozen credible imminent threats to life which have led to the conduct of duty to warn, by law enforcement with members of South Asian community and specifically, members of the pro-Khalistan movement.”

In a statement on Monday, India “strongly” rejected a diplomatic communication from Canada suggesting that the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats were “persons of interest” in an investigation and termed it as “preposterous imputations” and part of the political agenda of the Justin Trudeau government.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s hostility to India has long been in evidence and his government has consciously provided space to violent extremists and terrorists “to harass, threaten and intimidate Indian diplomats and community leaders in Canada”.

Although the India-Canada relations reached a new low after Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing in 2023. However, the history of strained ties between India and Canada extends beyond current events.

Here’s a series of events that have led to the strained ties between the two nations.

February 2018: A convicted Khalistani terrorist Jaspal Atwal, who was active in the banned International Sikh Youth Federation, posed with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s former wife Sophie Trudeau at an event in Mumbai, during the Canadian first family’s visit to India.

Jaspal Atwal was also invited for a formal dinner with the Canadian Prime Minister, hosted by the Canadian High Commissioner in Delhi. However, the invitation to Atwal to Trudeau’s reception was rescinded. Atwal was convicted of the attempted murder of Punjab minister, Malkiat Singh Sidhu, on Vancouver Island in 1986.

June 2023: Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was shot outside a Gurdwara in British Columbia’s Surrey on June 18, 2023.

August 2023: A Hindu temple was vandalised in Canada by extremist elements, with Khalistan referendum posters in the late hours of Saturday, Australia Today reported. The incident happened in British Columbia province in Canada.

September 2023: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited India to attend the G20 Summit on September 9-10 last year.

During his bilateral talks with Trudeau on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, PM Narendra Modi raised “strong concerns” about the continuous “anti-India activities” by extremist elements in Canada, and stated that it is essential for the two countries to cooperate in dealing with such threats, according to MEA.

Even as Canadian PM Trudeau was in India for the G20 Leaders’ summit, Khalistani secessionists held a so-called ‘Referendum’ in Surrey, British Columbia.

Designated terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun was present at the gathering of the Khalistani separatists held at the Guru Nanak Singh Gurudwara in Surrey. He used intimidating language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and other leaders.

Justin Trudeau was stranded in Delhi for two days after attending the G20 Leaders Summit due to a technical snag in his flight.

On September 18 last year, Trudeau made the stunning revelation in the House of Commons that there was credible intelligence linking India’s government to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside Gurdwara.

In the aftermath, India swiftly retaliated by issuing a statement that denied any involvement in the issue, terming them “absurd and politically motivated.” The Ministry of External Affairs has said that Canada has consistently given space to anti-India extremists.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Canada has not been able to present any evidence to back its claims over Nijjar’s killing.

India also suspended its visa services in Canada after Trudeau alleged the Indian government’s involvement in the killing of a Khalistani terrorist in June.

October 2023: In October, Canada pulled out 41 diplomats from India and also halted its visa and consular services in Chandigarh, Mumbai, and Bengaluru consulates in the wake of the Union government’s decision to strip them of their immunity.

This came after New Delhi conveyed its concerns to Ottawa over the disproportionate number of diplomats in India and sought a ‘parity’ in diplomatic strength.

In October, India resumed visa services in Canada for four categories after a considered review of the security situation which “takes into account some recent Canadian measures in this regard”.

Entry visa, Business visa, Medical visa and Conference visa are four categories in which India has decided to resume visa services in Canada with effect from October 26.

November 2023: Indian High Commissioner in Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma said that, and India is only asking for “specific and relevant” evidence in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar so that it can help Canada in reaching the conclusion of the investigation. He made these remarks in an interview with Canadian journalist Tahir Gora at TAG TV Toronto.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) registered a case against ‘listed individual terrorist’ Gurpatwant Singh Pannun over his viral video threatening the passengers flying in Air India and the airlines with a global blockade and closure of its operations from November 19.

The NIA booked Pannun under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. In the video, Pannun urged the Sikhs not to fly on Air India planes on and after November 19 claiming threat to their lives if they flew on Air India. He also threatened that Air India would not be allowed to operate in the world.

April 2024: At the Khalsa Day Celebrations that took place in Toronto, loud chants of pro-Khalistan slogans were seen being raised in the presence of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as well as opposition leader Pierre Poilievre.

As Trudeau was about to take the stage for his address to mark Khalsa Day, the chants were heard getting louder till he arrives and commences his speech in the video released by Canada-based CPAC TV. Slogans of “Khalistan Zindabad” were heard at the event in which, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow were also present.

May 2024: The Canadian Police have arrested and charged three individuals in connection with the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The three individuals were identified as Karanpreet Singh (28), Kamalpreet Singh (22), and Karan Brar (22).

A few days later, the Canadian Police arrested a fourth suspect over his alleged involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The accused has been identified as Amandeep Singh (22).

June 2024: Canada’s Members of Parliament from all parties observed a moment of silence for Nijjar, who was fatally shot outside his gurdwara in Surrey.

July 2024: The BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Edmonton fell victim to vandalism. Member of Parliament for Nepean, Chandra Arya, voiced deep concern over the escalating incidents of hate-fueled violence directed at Hindu-Canadian communities.

October 2024: On October 15, Justin Trudeau accused agents of the Indian government on Monday of engaging in “clandestine information-gathering techniques, coercive behavior targeting Canadians, and involvement in threatening and violent acts.”

Citing evidence from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Trudeau claimed that Indian government officials were involved in activities that pose a threat to public safety.

“As the RCMP Commissioner stated earlier they have clear and compelling evidence that agents of the Government of India have engaged in and continue to engage in activities that pose a significant threat to public safety. This includes clandestine information-gathering techniques, coercive behavior targeting South Asian Canadians, and involvement in a dozen threatening and violating acts, including murder. This is unacceptable,” Trudeau alleged while addressing the press conference.

He further claimed that Canadian law enforcement had “made several attempts” to work with Indian counterparts on these matters but were “repeatedly refused.”

Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Melanie Joly has said that the decision to expel Indian diplomats was based on evidence gathered by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in India-designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar killing case and urged the Indian government to support the ongoing probe for the benefit of two nations.

In a post on X, Joly stated, “Keeping Canadians safe is our government’s top priority. The decision to expel individuals was based on clear evidence gathered by the RCMP in the Nijjar case. We urge the Indian government to support our ongoing investigation for the benefit of both countries.” (ANI)

Corporate Work Culture Dehumanizes You Into A Serving Robot

Corporate Work Culture Dehumanizes You Into A Serving Robot

Ankit Chakroborty, who left an MNC to start his own venture, says it is better to earn less than to sacrifice your wellbeing at a high pressure job. His views:

I used to work for an MNC where, according to my profile, my primary target was supply chain management. Despite the fact that the primary motto of the company was client satisfaction, there was no time or requirement for any direct emphasis on it. Despite tall claims of promoting the interest of the client, it always remained in the red on target achievements. Over 60 to 70 percent of the productive hours were wasted in meetings and useless paper works and making compliance reports.

Targets, projections and other business buzzwords kept swimming over your head every time you closed your eyes. Even your dreams consisted of your office work and every ping on your phone woke you up with a shock from deep sleep. Personal space and wellbeing were the first casualty.

At the time of entering this dark tunnel, the employees are often shown and promised a glittering heaven but soon you realize that you are on a different bandwidth. A choking feeling starts to develop with the burden of unnecessary things that were not a part of what you were expected to do. Another hard and bitter fact I would like to share is that most of the seniors tend to make your life hell; juniors are treated not as humans but machines. You are only expected to be bang on target and over-perform; in corporate yardsticks of Bell Curve, they called it ‘Exceeds Expectation’ or ‘Excellence’.

This often results in conflict of interest with seniors and if at all you dare to get yourself heard and try reaching out to get your issues settled, you are again faced with the same set of seniors and their dehumanizing mindset. The worst department, as far as Indian MNCs are concerned, is the HR department which does everything but managing human resources of their company. I am sorry to say but this department even tends to interfere with your personal life, keep track of the gossip in the office, or encourage spying or ratting on your colleagues.

ALSO READ: Work-Life Balance Is An Alien Concept in India

It should be none of the company’s business what an employee is doing after office hours. But your seniors want you to be just a phone call away even on weekly offs and after work hours. This has a number of times resulted in fights with the family but you have no choice but to carry on like a machine or give up on your career growth.

I am happy that I abandoned such a workplace and started my own small business. It just didn’t make sense to sacrifice your family and personal wellbeing for a few silver coins.

My suggestion is that the government should look into the white collar employees working condition too and implement work culture of employee-friendly MNCs. Take for example the notice period in the companies of our country – if you go with the fine lines in the contract, there is no notice period as such and you can be kicked out any time!

The severance package that is followed by big international companies provide a financial compensation to the employee at the time of termination or completion of employment. It is a goodwill gesture that can help employees transition from work to unemployment. There are many such things that our MNCs need to learn or the government should take stringent steps to get these practices of the west to inculcate in the employers’ of India.

SIT Kerala

Kerala HC Directs SIT To Investigate Alleged Use Of Drug, Alcohol On Film Sets

The Kerala High Court has directed the SIT to conduct an investigation and take the necessary action as contemplated under law into the “rampant use of alcohol/drugs in the film shooting sets and other connected workplaces” as found in the Hema Committee report.

“Necessary steps as and when required shall be taken in future also to prevent such rampant use of alcohol/drugs at shooting locations and other connected work sites, which use are in violation of the relevant provisions of law”, the court noted.

HC after going through the entire Justice Hema Committee report including the redacted portion said that the statement of many witnesses recorded by the Committee reveals the commission of cognizable offences.

The court asked SIT to take precautions to ensure that the name of the victim/ survivor is not revealed or made public.

“The name of the victim/ survivor shall be masked in the FIS/FIR. The SIT shall ensure that the copy of the FIS is not uploaded or made public. The copy of the same shall not be issued to any person except to the victim/survivor (Sec.173(2) BNSS)”, observed the court.

The court also reiterated that there cannot be any compulsion of the witnesses to give statements.

In August, a redacted version of the Justice Hema Committee report on the harassment faced by women in the Malayalam cinema industry was made public. It contained distressing accounts of harassment, exploitation, and mistreatment of women professionals.

The 235-page report, published with the names of witnesses and accused redacted, notes that the Malayalam film industry is controlled by a “power group” including 10 to 15 male producers, directors, and actors who dominate and exert control over the industry.

The report, prepared by a three-member panel led by a former judge of the Kerala High Court and set up by the state government in 2017, was submitted to the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Kerala government in December 2019 and was made public in August 2024 after some reporters sought it through right to information.

The government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the challenges faced by women in the industry. (ANI)

India Withdraws Envoy, Summons Canada’s Diplomat Over ‘Baseless Targeting’

India on Monday summoned Canada’s Charge d’Affaires Stewart Wheeler and conveyed that “the baseless targeting” of the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats and officials in Canada was completely unacceptable.

Ministry of External Affairs said in a release that it was underlined to the Canada’s Charge d’Affaires that in an atmosphere of extremism and violence, the Trudeau Government’s actions endangered their safety and the government had decided to withdraw India’s High Commissioner to Canada Sanjay Kumar Verma and other targeted diplomats and officials.

The government conveyed that India reserves the right to take further steps in response to the “Trudeau Government’s support for extremism, violence and separatism against India”.

“Canadian Charge d’Affaires was summoned by Secretary (East) this evening. He was informed that the baseless targeting of the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats and officials in Canada was completely unacceptable,” MEA said in its release.

“It was underlined that in an atmosphere of extremism and violence, the Trudeau Government’s actions endangered their safety. We have no faith in the current Canadian Government’s commitment to ensure their security. Therefore, the Government of India has decided to withdraw the High Commissioner and other targeted diplomats and officials,” it added.

India had earlier in the day “strongly” rejected a diplomatic communication from Canada suggesting that the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats were “persons of interest” in an investigation and termed it as “preposterous imputations” and part of the political agenda of the Justin Trudeau government.

In a hard-hitting statement, India said Canadian Prime Minister Jutin Trudeau’s hostility towards India has long been in evidence and his government has consciously provided space to violent extremists and terrorists “to harass, threaten and intimidate Indian diplomats and community leaders in Canada”.

“We have received a diplomatic communication from Canada yesterday suggesting that the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats are ‘persons of interest’ in a matter related to an investigation in that country. The Government of India strongly rejects these preposterous imputations and ascribes them to the political agenda of the Trudeau Government that is centered around vote bank politics,” the statement said.

“Since Prime Minister Trudeau made certain allegations in September 2023, the Canadian Government has not shared a shred of evidence with the Government of India, despite many requests from our side. This latest step follows interactions that have again witnessed assertions without any facts. This leaves little doubt that on the pretext of an investigation, there is a deliberate strategy of smearing India for political gains,” it added.

The Statement said that High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma is India’s senior most serving diplomat with a distinguished career spanning 36 years. He has been Ambassador in Japan and Sudan, while also serving in Italy, Turkiye, Vietnam and China.

The aspersions cast on him by the Government of Canada are ludicrous and deserve to be treated with contempt, the statement said.

“Prime Minister Trudeau’s hostility to India has long been in evidence. In 2018, his visit to India, which was aimed at currying favour with a vote bank, rebounded to his discomfort. His Cabinet has included individuals who have openly associated with an extremist and separatist agenda regarding India. His naked interference in Indian internal politics in December 2020 showed how far he was willing to go in this regard,” the MEA statement said.

“That his Government was dependent on a political party, whose leader openly espouses a separatist ideology vis-a-vis India, only aggravated matters. Under criticism for turning a blind eye to foreign interference in Canadian politics, his Government has deliberately brought in India in an attempt to mitigate the damage,” it added.

MEA said the latest development targeting Indian diplomats is now the next step in that direction.

“It is no coincidence that it takes place as Prime Minister Trudeau is to depose before a Commission on foreign interference. It also serves the anti-India separatist agenda that the Trudeau Government has constantly pandered to for narrow political gains,” the statement said.

“To that end, the Trudeau Government has consciously provided space to violent extremists and terrorists to harass, threaten and intimidate Indian diplomats and community leaders in Canada. This has included death threats to them and to Indian leaders. All these activities have been justified in the name of freedom of speech. Some individuals who have entered Canada illegally have been fast-tracked for citizenship,” the statement added.

It said that multiple extradition requests from the Government of India in respect of terrorists and organized crime leaders living in Canada have been disregarded,” it added.

“The Government of India has taken cognizance of the activities of the Canadian High Commission in India that serve the political agenda of the current regime. This led to the implementation of the principle of reciprocity in regard to diplomatic representation. India now reserves the right to take further steps in response to these latest efforts of the Canadian Government to concoct allegations against Indian diplomats,” it added.

The ties between India and Canada soured after Trudeau alleged in the Canadian Parliament last year that he has “credible allegations” of India’s hand in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

India has denied all the allegations, calling them “absurd” and “motivated” and has accused Canada of giving space to extremist and anti-India elements in their country.Nijjar, who was designated a terrorist by India’s National Investigation Agency in 2020, was shot and killed outside a Gurdwara in Surrey in June last year.
