Friendship Between India, Germany Deepening At Every Step: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hailed the strengthening ties between India and Germany, citing recent collaborations as evidence of their deepening friendship.

Speaking at the 18th Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business 2024, PM Modi said, “On one hand, the CEO Forum meeting is being held here, on the other hand, our navies are practising together. German naval ships are on a port call in Goa. And in a short while from now, the seventh inter-governmental consultations between India and Germany are also to be organized.”

“That is, the friendship between India and Germany is deepening at every step, on every front,” he added.

PM Modi said that this year marks the completion of 25 years of India-Germany strategic partnership and added that the next 25 years are going to take this partnership to new heights.

“This year is the 25th year of India-Germany Strategic Partnership. The next 25 years are going to take this partnership to new heights. We have prepared a roadmap for a developed India in the coming 25 years,” PM Modi said.

Prime Minister Modi welcomed the release of the “Focus on India” document by the German Cabinet, which outlines how two strong democracies and leading economies can cooperate for global good.

“I am happy that at such a crucial time, the German Cabinet has released the Focus on India document. The Focus on India document is a blueprint of how the world’s two strong democracies, the world’s two leading economies, can together become a force for global good. It clearly reflects the approach and commitment to take the strategic partnership forward in a holistic manner. The trust that Germany has shown in India’s skilled manpower is especially amazing,” he said.

PM Modi also expressed confidence that Germany’s decision to increase visas for skilled Indians will boost its growth.

“Germany has decided to increase the number of visas given to skilled Indians every year from 20 thousand to 90 thousand. I am confident that this will give a new impetus to Germany’s growth,” he said.

“Our mutual trade has reached a level of more than 30 billion dollars. Today, on one hand, hundreds of German companies are in India, while Indian companies are also rapidly increasing their presence in Germany. Today, India is becoming the biggest centre of diversification and de-risking. India is also becoming a hub of global trade and manufacturing. In such a situation, this is the most appropriate time for you to Make in India, Make for the World,” PM Modi said. (ANI)

US Elections And World Peace

US Elections And World Peace

Around the world there is interest in the United States elections. India awaits, so does China, Russia, European Union, Great Britain and Middle East among many. They do for different reasons. While Americans have their own priorities in deciding who they elect, the impact of the United States worldwide on economy and international politics is what draws keen following of the candidates outside USA.

Foreign policy is said not to feature much in the American electorate. Immigration, domestic economy, jobs, prejudices, taxation etc are foremost in the minds of the American electorate. However, it is not entirely correct to say that Americans are not concerned about the image and influence of United States worldwide when assessing the Presidential candidates.

Donald Trump made US tendency for unnecessary and costly interventions in ‘other people’s affairs’ one of the key pitches in the 2016 elections. This time he has again brought Ukraine and Middle East into the debates claiming that if he had been president, Russia would not have attacked Ukraine and that he could solve the Middle East issue. Kamla Harris accuses Trump of reducing US influence in the international sphere, abandoning friends and American values in favour of dictators and tyrannical governments.

In these two different positions lie the different ideological approaches of the two candidates and the impact they are likely to have in international affairs. It is that which concerns countries like China, Russia, India and Europe among others.

Kamla Harris is still a creature of the Democratic party. The Democratic Party is a well established machine with linked think-tanks, internal policy groups and forums, advisors and a bureaucratic set up that requires its candidates to work with and promote party line. It is not Kamla Harris who decides policy at whim, but a set of machinery through which policy passes and is approved or supported. True that every candidate needs to show that he or she is bringing a new perspective and a new direction, but it is the machine that comes up with ideas and policies that appear to be different.

In foreign affairs however, the Democratic party is rooted in ideology promoting democracy and liberal values around the world with some pragmatic adjustments. It splashes money around, its aid to developing countries comes with a demand to transforming into democratic polity and observing human rights as well as capitalism. Where it doesn’t work, Democrats are interventionists, financing internal coups, or directly sending its army to ‘improve the conditions of the people’. Democrats have the approach of crusaders for democratic liberal values.

However, democrats are also pragmatic where powerful countries such as Saudi Arabia and China are concerned and strategic interests are served with non-intervention. In much of the Middle East, the USA has cosy relationships with stable absolute Monarchies where little if any democracy exists. In fact it has defence pacts with them with substantive chunk of US army stationed there. Its interests are to ensure supply of oil and to have influence in the Middle East.

Democrats have a long history of interventionist foreign policy and starting wars. Usually they haven’t been successful. But driven by ideology in international relations, it is difficult for a Democrat President to ignore the pressure from NGOs, media and think-tanks when human rights situation in a country becomes dire. At the least, a Democratic President is not expected to be comfortable with ‘bad’ countries such as China, Iran and Russia among others.

Historically Republicans haven’t been much different although their motives are not as altruistic as the Democrats. The Bush administration was quite interventionist after 9/11. Republican policies are motivated by the need to install ‘friendly’ regimes and preferential access to resources.

Donald Trump is however his own man. He is not bound by consensus within the party, think-tanks, human rights organisations, media etc. He doesn’t seem to much care about Republic party’s priorities in foreign policy. He has ripped apart US international relations theories.

From his last tenure as President, it appears Trump’s foreign policy is founded on three pillars. The first is transactional. He prefers to negotiate the US position and look for advantage to America. He is not bothered by the nature of the government, as he showed last time when visiting Saudi Arabia or shaking hands with Kim Jong Un of North Korea.

Secondly Trump is determined to maintain United States dominance rather than cultural or political hegemony.  He will increase defence spending if he thought other countries are leaving the USA behind. In transactional Foreign Policy, Trump believes in negotiating with a strong hand.

Thirdly, he is non-interventionist. Trump has said that wars abroad are expensive and drain on resources. He probably thinks that these wars reduce US standing, prestige and ability to negotiate. He is a realist rather than an idealist. He has adjusted to a changed world order.

ALSO READ: Is This The America World Wants To See?

Trump has already hinted that he will end the Ukraine war. The general expectation is that he will stop sending arms and force Ukraine to negotiate for peace, even from a weaker hand. It will remain to be seen how he manages the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Chances are he is likely to turn to Israel and tell it to stop the war, negotiate and move on. He is also likely to tell Palestinian Hamas to recognise Israel and take what it gets.

The Democrats haven’t quite moved on from the cold war. That period was ideological conflict between Capitalism represented by the USA, and Communism represented by the Soviets. As the Soviet fell and Communism faded, the cold war resumed over democracy and human rights in one corner and semi democracies and dictatorships on the other. Democrats still run proxy wars. This time they had Ukraine fighting to bring down Putin with the hope that Russia will become weaker and more compliant.

Europeans too are still stuck with a cold war approach to international affairs, seeing the ‘good us’ and the ‘evil other’. They like Kamla Harris and don’t seem to be keen on Trump. European foreign policy is still clouded with ideological intentions to transform the world into a ‘better’ place for all under European tutelage. Their interactions in Ukraine have all the hallmarks of a bygone era.

But Russia is not the real opposition now. The ideology conflicts are the past. The new world order is a tension between the still ideological west and the no nonsense China. China has no intention of engaging in ideological conflicts. It doesn’t want western democracy and it is not exporting Chinese form of Government anywhere. It has a businesslike approach. It has arisen from a poorly developing country to be the second most powerful country, predicted to overtake USA.

Trump seems more adept at understanding the new world order. He said he doesn’t want to change the world into ‘our image’. His positioning in international affairs is closer to China now. He understands that ideology isn’t important anymore. In shaking hands with Kim Jong Un he was possibly trying to prize away North Korea from its deeper link with and dependency on China.

Kamla Harris is still a better person for most Americans, but for the international community, Trump might be a better President as he will avoid interventions, avoid ideological tensions and play the transaction game in international affairs.

Trump does scare some countries due to his unpredictability. But that is part of his strategic approach to assess what will work best. Whereas, as Putin said, Democrats are predictable as they are driven by ideology. The world has changed, the United States hasn’t caught up yet. Trump is more likely to bring it to speed.

Kapoor specifically pointed to the popular film Chak De! India said that Shah Rukh Khan’s character, Kabir Khan, was originally based on the coach Mir Ranjan Negi. He claimed that the filmmakers deliberately changed the character to a Muslim.

“The main character in Chak De! India is based on a famous coach, Negi Saab. But in India, they want to show a Muslim as a good character and make fun of a Pandit (Hindu priest). Chak De! India is a 2007 Bollywood sports drama film about Shah Rukh Khan’s character Kabir Khan.

In the film, Kabir, (played by Shah Rukh) a former Indian men’s hockey player, is accused of betraying his country after losing an important match against Pakistan. To redeem his reputation, he becomes the coach of the Indian women’s hockey team, which is struggling and not taken seriously.

Goldy Brar India Canada

We Shared Name Of Goldy Brar: Recalled Indian Envoy To Canada

Recalled Indian High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma on Thursday lambasted the Canadian government for fostering criminals and “encouraging Khalistani extremists,” while highlighting the case of Goldy Brar.

The Ministry of Home Affairs in January 2024 declared Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar a designated terrorist under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

The recalled Indian envoy, Verma in an exclusive interview with ANI shared the details of Goldy Brar who was on India’s list for extradition.

“When we were discussing on the government channel (with Canada), we shared the name of Goldy Brar who is also on our list for extradition. In the Canadian system, the RCMP doesn’t bring out any wanted list. But there is a civic organisation ‘Bolo’ which in back-channel consultation with authorities in Canada they take out list of 10 most wanted persons. Next time we looked at the same list, it was all gone. What happened?” said Sanjay Kumar Verma.

In a gazetted notification, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has informed that Goldy Brar is associated with the banned Khalistani organisation Babbar Khalsa International, which is known for anti-India activities.

Goldy Brar came on the radar of Indian investigative agencies after he took responsibility for the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala in 2022.

Sanjay Verma also highlighted the role of Pakistan in fuelling Khalistani elements.

“We do know and understand that Pakistani agencies have close links to Pakistani extremists and terrorists. We can see the examples of those terrorists who were living in Pakistan…Yes, there are global links. I will have no doubts that these global links will also be valid for Canada,” he said.

Verma also said that during the entire episode following the killing of designated terrorist Hardeep Nijjar the Canadians have not furnished any evidence so far.

“If you look at the entire episode, and we have always been maintaining that there is no shred of evidence shared with us, I feel it is largely politically motivated and an ill-conceived targeting of India. We are a responsible democracy. We do not have a policy to interfere in the internal affairs of any country…It was painful as I had gone there to further improve the ties between the two nations but allegations were levelled against me. I also feel that if my nation’s interest are harmed then it is my duty to protect my country.”

Verma was recalled from Canada after the country said he was a person of interest in the Hardeep Singh Nijjar murder case; however, he denied all charges levelled against him by Ottawa in connection with the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

The ties between India and Canada soured after Trudeau alleged in the Canadian Parliament last year that he has “credible allegations” of India’s hand in the killing of Nijjar.

India has denied all the allegations, calling them “absurd” and “motivated” and has accused Canada of giving space to extremist and anti-India elements in their country.

Nijjar, who was designated a terrorist by India’s National Investigation Agency in 2020, was shot and killed outside a Gurdwara in Surrey in June last year. (ANI)

Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP)-IV to curb air pollution Delhi

SC: Let Those Affected By Demolition Approach Court, Won’t Open Pandora’s Box

The Supreme Court on Thursday said that it doesn’t want to open “Pandora’s box” as it refused to entertain the plea by a petitioner who is directly or indirectly affected by the alleged demolition drive.

A bench of Justices B R Gavai, PK Mishra, and KV Viswanathan refused to entertain a petition by the NGO National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW). The top court observed that the petitioner was neither directly or indirectly affected by the alleged acts.

However, NFIW counsel argued that after the top court paused the bulldozer action, three incidents took place in different states, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan without permission and it is in violation of the top court’s order. But the court was not convinced by the petitioner’s submission observing that the petitioner was not affected by the alleged acts.

On October 1, the top court extended its stay on bulldozer action without permission as it reserved an order on the issue of framing Pan-India guidelines relating to the demolition drive. On Oct 1, the Supreme Court also extended an interim order for not demolishing any property without permission, till further orders. However, the interim order will not apply to any unauthorized constructions including religious structures on roads, and footpaths among others.

Supreme Court had remarked that public safety is paramount and whether it be a temple, dargah, or gurudwara in the middle of the road it has to go as it cannot obstruct the public. The top court had said that it is only concerned about misuse of the municipal laws. The Supreme Court also expressed concern on the issue that if there are two structures in violation and action is taken only against one and later one finds a criminal background soon after also said that there has a to be law for unauthorized constructions and it is not dependent on religion or faith or beliefs.

On September 17, the top court ordered that across the country, no demolition of property would take place without the permission of the court till October 1, the next date of hearing but clarified this order would not apply to any unauthorized construction of public roads, and footpaths, among others. The top court extended its interim order on Thursday.

The top court has also said that if there is any unauthorized even if it is the temple, mosques, mosques, or any, religious structures on public roads, foo, paths, and railway lines then the order of pausing demolition will not apply. It also heard various petitions relating to bulldozer practices by the authorities to demolish immovable properties. One of the applications filed recently said that the increasing culture of illegal demolitions in the country turning extra-legal punishment by the State into a norm and minorities and marginalized communities have been increasingly victimized by using extra-legal demolitions as a tool of punishment and creating a harrowing precedent for people in general and the members of the minority communities in particular. Congress UP Polls

Cong Not To Field Candidates In UP Assembly Polls

The Congress party announced on Thursday that it has decided to not field candidates in the nine Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh where bypolls are being held, said Congress in-charge Avinash Pandey on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference here, Avinash Pandey said, “The Congress has decided not to field candidates in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh bypolls and has announced its support for the Samajwadi Party (SP) in UP.”

The Congress State in-charge said, “This press conference is an important notice for Uttar Pradesh, that has been the center of attention in the country’s politics. This is also regarding the role of Congress in the by-elections to be held there.”

“The Election Commission has announced by-elections in 9 out of 10 seats in UP. The BJP has been pursuing its political agenda for the last 10 years to weaken the constitution in the country and to serve its political interests, and to divide and break the brotherhood in the society,” claimed Pandey.

He further said, “In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the people of UP gave a befitting reply to them. Today, with values to protect and save the Constitution, Rahul Gandhi is touring the country and working to give justice to every section of the society.”

“Keeping the same values in mind, as per the suggestion of the President of the UP Congress Committee and all the senior leaders there and after taking consent from the Congress President, we have decided that the Congress Party will not field its candidates in UP,” announced Avinash Pandey.

“All the candidates of the INDIA bloc will remain united, strong and support Samajwadi Party (SP) in UP,” said the State Congress in-charge.

Recently, under the leadership of UP Congress commitee the Congress held “Samvidhan Bachao Sankalp Sammelan” (save Constitution conferences) on all 10 seats.

Avinash Pandey said that these conferences were successfully organised in all the 10 Assembly seats of UP and were attended by thousands of people and workers.

“After the success of these conferences, we have realized that if we do not stop BJP and NDA today, then in the coming times the constitution and brotherhood will weaken in the country,” stated Avinash Pandey.

Meanwhile, after announcing that INDIA bloc candidates would be contesting the Uttar Pradesh bypolls on the Samajwadi Party’s ‘cycle’ symbol, party president Akhilesh Yadav said on Thursday ‘humne yeh thana hai, ‘samvidhan, arshan, sohardh (We have decided to save Constitution, Reservation, Harmony). We have to build the country of Bapu-Babasaheb-Lohia’s dreams,” he said in a post on X.

Earlier, in another post, Yadav highlighted that the INDIA bloc candidates would be contesting the bypolls under his party’s symbol.

“It is not about seats but about winning. Under this strategy, the joint candidates of ‘India Alliance’ will contest on all the 9 seats on the Samajwadi Party’s election symbol ‘cycle’. Congress and Samajwadi Party are united and standing shoulder to shoulder for a big victory. India Alliance is going to write a new chapter of victory in this by-election,” read the post on X.

Congress leader Surendra Rajput further confirmed that the main aim of the alliance will be to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) instead of choosing the symbol.

“INDIA Alliance is contesting all 9 seats. For us, symbol is not important. For us, the end of BJP’s misgovernance is important. For us, the end of Bahraich riot perpetrators is important. For us, it is important that there be security, peace and safeguarding of Constitution. INDIA Alliance is united against those who are against caste census and reservation and will contest all 9 seats. The manner in which Akhilesh Yadav showed big-heartedness in Haryana, we will contest with the same sentiment and win all 9 seats,” he said.

Additionally, Akhilesh Yadav also appealed to the people to stand united and vote without dividing the vote.

On Tuesday, 15 candidates filed nominations in UP for by-polls and a total of 34 candidates filed nominations for Uttar Pradesh by-polls till Wednesday. Nominations will continue to be accepted for the by-elections of the 9 assembly seats in UP until October 25.

The poll body has announced by-polls for nine of the 10 vacant assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh, except Milkipur of Ayodhya district.

The Uttar Pradesh by-polls are slated to be held on nine Assembly seats including Meerapur, Kundarki, Ghaziabad, Khair, Karhal, Phulpur, and Katehari.

The polling will take place on November 13 and the counting of votes is scheduled for November 23. (ANI)

Sundar Ashwin India NZ

Sundar, Ashwin Get Timely Wickets For India As NZ Cross 200-Run Mark

Half-centuries from Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra did their damage, however, timely scalps from spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar pulled back momentum to the hosts during the second session of day one of second Test against New Zealand at Pune’s MCA Stadium on Thursday.

At the end of the second session, NZ was 201/5, with Daryl Mitchell (16*) unbeaten.

NZ started the second session at 92/2, with Conway (47) and Rachin Ravindra (5) unbeaten.

Conway attacked Jasprit Bumrah in the very first over of the session, getting three fours. He reached his second half-century of the series in 109 balls, with six fours.

NZ reached the 100-run mark in 31.4 overs through one of Conway’s classy boundaries.

Conway continued to see off the Indian bowling with confidence and a brilliant temperament, giving Rachin enough time to settle. However, their 62-run partnership was ended with Ravichandran Ashwin getting Conway for 76 in 141 balls, with 11 fours. NZ was 138/3 in 43.2 overs.

Daryl Mitchell joined Rachin on the crease. NZ reached the 150-run mark in 48.1 overs, thanks to a massive six over long-on by Rachin against Ravindra Jadeja.

Rachin continued his impressive run in Test cricket, bringing up his fourth fifty in 93 balls, with three fours and a six.

After reaching his half-century, Rachin started to look even more dangerous, collecting two boundaries against Akash Deep, who seemed to be having an off day with a poor economy rate.

Washington Sundar cleaned up Rachin with an absolute peach of a delivery for 65 in 105 balls, with five fours and a six. NZ was 197/4 in 59.1 overs at the end of the 59-run partnership between Rachin and Mitchell.

NZ reached the 200-run mark in 61.3 overs. A sharp, turning delivery from Sundar removed Tom Blundell for three. NZ was 201/5 heading into tea break.

Earlier, Ashwin struck twice while Conway took on world-class Indian bowling bravely in an evenly-contested first session on day one of the second Test between India and New Zealand at Pune’s MCA stadium on Thursday.

At the end of the session one, NZ was 92/2, with Conway (47) and Ravindra (5) unbeaten.

After New Zealand opted to bat first after winning the toss, openers skipper Tom Latham and Devon Conway gave the Kiwis a cautious start.

Early in the innings, Latham and Conway took on Akash’s pace really well, making him a primary target with four classy boundaries. Jasprit Bumrah was really economic on the other hand.

Things changed with the introduction of spin. Ravichandran Ashwin struck in his first over, trapping Latham leg-before wicket for 15 runs in 22 balls. His knock had two boundaries. Kiwis were 39/1 in 7.5 overs. Latham continued his poor run against Ashwin, getting dismissed by him for the ninth time in 11 innings, in which he has made just 128 runs against the veteran at a poor average of 14.22.

Will Young joined Conway and NZ reached the 50-run mark in 15.1 overs.

Both were just stitching a partnership, braving some tight bowling from the spin trio of Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar. However, Young edged one to Rishabh Pant, giving Ashwin his second scalp. NZ was 76/2 in 24 overs, with Young gone for 18 in 45 balls.

Conway and Rachin Ravindra took NZ through the remainder of the first session without any further loss.

Brief Scores: New Zealand: 201/5 (Devon Conway 76, Rachin Ravindra 65, Ashwin 3/48) vs India. (ANI)
