SP Announces ₹5Lakh For Sambhal Violence Victims’ Families

Amid ruckus over the SP delegation’s proposed visit to Sambhal, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Mata Prasad Pandey on Saturday announced that the party would give Rs five lakhs each to the families of those who lost their lives in connection with the Sambhal violence. He demanded that the Uttar Pradesh government should give Rs one crore as ex-gratia.

“Samajwadi Party will give Rs five lakh each to the families of those killed in the Sambhal incident. Akhilesh Yadav has announced that we will soon give financial assistance to the families of the deceased. We demand from the government that it should give Rs one crore each. There should be an impartial investigation of the Sambhal incident,” Leader of Opposition (LoP) Mata Prasad Pandey said in a press conference.

The senior SP leader further stated that they wanted to visit Sambhal but were stopped and were not even allowed to go to the party office in Lucknow.

“We wanted to go to Sambhal but we were stopped, we were not even allowed to go to the party office. Even today our delegation is not able to go, we will talk to Akhilesh Yadav and make a plan to go again,” LoP Pandey added.

The senior SP MLA said that they would visit Sambhal only after informing the administration. “If we had to go secretly, would they have stopped us? We will go only after informing them,” Pandey added.

“DM Sambhal told us that it is written in the order that we can go there with the permission of a competent officer. But the police here did not comply with the order of the District Magistrate Sambhal. We could have been stopped on the way to Sambhal but we have been stopped at home,” Mata Prasad Pandey said.

While reading the notices given to him by the Uttar Pradesh police, the senior SP leader said that UP was ruled by the police and not the law.

Earlier in the day, SP leader Mata Prasad Pandey was also stopped by the police from visiting Sambhal amid heavy police deployment outside his residence. SP leaders Zia Ur Rehman Barq and Harendra Malik were also stopped by the UP police while they were travelling to Sambhal from New Delhi. (ANI)

EC Invites Congress Team To Address Electoral Concerns

Noting that a transparent process is followed with the involvement of candidates and their agents at every stage of the voting process, the Election Commission has invited a Congress delegation to meet it on December 3 over its apprehensions concerning the voting percentage in Maharashtra elections. Congress had also raised some apprehensions about the EVM process after the Haryana assembly polls.

The poll panel has said it will review all legitimate concerns of Congress and provide written response after hearing the party’s delegation.

The Election Commission of India (ECI), in its interim response to Congress, reaffirmed that there is a transparent process with the involvement of candidates or their agents at every stage.

In its interim response, ECI also reiterated that there is a transparent electoral roll updation process with the involvement of political parties. The Commission has still assured Congress of further review of all its legitimate concerns, the officials said.

Responding to the issue raised by Congress regarding voter turnout data, EC asserted that there is no discrepancy in voter turnout data which is available with all candidates polling station-wise and is verifiable.

“The gap in 5 PM polling data and final voter turnout is due to procedural priorities, as presiding officers perform multiple statutory duties near the close of the poll before updating voter turnout data. As an additional disclosure measure, ECI press note, at around 11:45 pm, was thus introduced during the 2024 General Elections and followed subsequently during all assembly elections thereafter,” the poll panel said.

Congress on Friday alleged that the “integrity of the entire electoral process is being severely compromised” and slammed the Election Commission.

The issue was discussed at the Congress Working Committee meeting and the party said it will launch a “national movement.”

“The Congress Working Committee (CWC) believes the integrity of the entire electoral process is being severely compromised. Free and fair elections is a constitutional mandate that is being called into serious question by the partisan functioning of the Election Commission. Increasing sections of society are becoming frustrated and deeply apprehensive. The Congress will take up these public concerns as a national movement,” the Congress statement said.

Congress general secretary KC Venugopal, who briefed the media, said that “electoral malpractices” also influenced the result of the Haryana Assembly election.

“The CWC also acknowledged that the party’s performance in Haryana has been contrary to all expectations. The INC should have formed the government in the state by a convincing margin, but it didn’t. However, there have been electoral malpractices that influenced the result in the state, which have been overlooked,” he alleged.

He said that the CWC accepted the party’s performance in Maharashtra, that was “unexplainable and shocking,” and it appears to be a clear case of “targeted manipulation.”

Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole also wrote to the ECI seeking to know how voter turnout increased by 7.83 percentage points after the official polling time had ended.

“Doubts are being raised from many levels on the 7.83 per cent increase in votes. Looking at the vote figures announced by the Election Commission, there must have been long queues at the polling stations after 5 pm on the day of voting. In how many constituencies in the state were there long queues of voters after 5 pm?” Patole said his letter to the apex poll body.

He further demanded that the Election Commission announce “evidence,” including video footage.

“According to the official figures released by the Election Commission, 65.2 per cent voting was done till 11.30 pm on November 20. The official figures released on the next day, i.e. on November 21 at 3 pm, were 66.05 per cent. Where did the 1.03 per cent discrepancy in the figures officially released by the Election Commission itself come from? How did a whopping nine lakh ninetynine thousand and three hundred and fifty nine votes increase in a single day?” he asked.

The opposition has raised questions over EVMs, mentioning the rise in voting percentage in the Maharashtra polls.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi – comprising the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), the Nationalist Congress Party faction led by Sharad Pawar and the Congress – won just 46 seats.

The BJP emerged as the biggest winner with 132 seats in the Maharashtra assembly while its allies–the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde and the NCP led by Ajit Pawar–won 57 and 41 seats, respectively.

The Maharashtra assembly elections were held on November 20 and the results were declared on November 23. (ANI)

I want to thank all the leaders… I thank each and every one of you for the love you have given me,” Priyanka Gandhi, addressing the gathering in Wayanad.

But I am now here to fight for all of this, to work with you and to understand them properly. I will come to your house, I will meet you, the doors of my office are open… I will not disappoint you,” she added.

The Congress leader said that in the last 35 years, she has been campaigning but this is the first time she fought the elections.

“It has been 35 years since I have been campaigning for elections and this is the first time, I contested elections. I remember every mother, children… I remember each one of your hugs, kisses, flowers,” Priyanka said.

The Congress General Secretary took oath as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha earlier on November 28 while holding a copy of the Constitution. Priyanka was seen wearing a Kerala Kasavu saree as she took oath as the representative from the southern state.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra secured the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat with a margin of 4,10,931 votes, defeating Sathyan Mokeri of the Communist Party of India (CPI).

The Wayanad seat was vacated by her brother Rahul Gandhi, who previously represented Wayanad but shifted to Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh after being elected to the Lok Sabha from there during this year’s general elections. (ANI)

Oppn Trying To Raise Sambhal Violence In Parliament: Manish Tiwari

Congress MP Manish Tiwari expressed sadness on the recent violence in Sambhal and said that the opposition is trying to raise the issue in Parliament for discussion too.

He also said that it is very important to maintain peace and harmony in the country.

“Whatever happened in Sambhal is very sad. We are trying to raise this issue in the Parliament. For the growth and progress of the nation, it is very important to ensure peace and harmony in the nation.”

Earlier, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari questioned the state government and the district administration in Sambhal over not allowing an opposition party’s delegation to visit the tense area.

“What is the district administration hiding? Why does the state government not want the opposition to visit Sambhal? They should allow the delegation to visit Sambhal,” Tiwari told ANI.

“The Samajwadi Party leader has said that the opposition, of whatever party will help with calming down the area, and instill confidence in the region. But the delegation has been asked to stop and we will stop, we just want to cooperate, not confrontation,” Pramod Tiwari added while quoting a Samajwadi Party (SP) leader.

Meanwhile, the official handle of the Samajwadi Party claimed that their Uttar Pradesh party president was put under house arrest. The party condemned the actions of the UP Police while accusing the state government of “disgracing” the Constitution and democracy.

“Yogi government is afraid of SP delegation! On the orders of the government, the police prevented the honourable state president Shri Shyam Lal Pal ji from coming to Sambhal and put him under house arrest. The BJP government is tearing apart the constitution and democracy. Highly condemnable,” the Samajwadi Party posted on X.

Violence broke out in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh after a court ordered ASI survey on November 19, of the Jama Masjid in the district. People clashed with police, resulting in the deaths of four persons. The survey was followed after a petition filed by some persons in the local court, claiming that the site of the mosque was previously a Harihar temple. (ANI)

Cyclone Fengal: Security Stepped Up Across Puducherry Beaches

A team led by Puducherry SSP Kalaivanan visited the beaches and the coastal roads in the region and inspected them as the Cyclone Fengal is expected to cross the coast on Saturday evening.

The authorities have advised the public to not visit beaches in Puducherry as well as in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai, including Marina Beach, Pattinapakkam and Edward Elliot Beach. The tourist spots in Puducherry have been closed as a precautionary measure, owing to the impending cyclone Fengal.

SSP Kalaivanan, speaking to ANI on Saturday, said that security has been heightened on the coastal roads and nearby areas in Puducherry. The SSP said that 300 personnel have been deployed on the coastal roads and beaches.

“For the last four days, we have been deploying police personnel along the beaches and apart from that we are also informing the fishermen and people living in the low-lying areas to be careful. Fishermen are not venturing into the sea. Since last night, we have closed all beaches. We have deployed nearly 300 personnel across all the beaches of Puducherry and we are coordinating with the NDRF also,” the SSP said.

The coastal areas of Puducherry witnessed rough sea and gusty winds on Saturday morning due to the impact of the cyclone. Puducherry received moderate rain, as per IMD, in the morning today but the rough sea was seen more than usual.

SSP Kalaivanan said that the government and the police are prepared to face Cyclone Fenchal, and that no public has been allowed to go to the coastal area.

Due to the Cyclone Fengal’s impact, many coastal areas witnessed changes in weather with gusty winds and rains. Chennai has witnessed incessant heavy to moderate rainfall from last night till this morning, which has caused rough sea conditions with strong winds.

According to IMD, Cyclone ‘Fengal’ over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards earlier and is expected to cross north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts later in the day.

“The Cyclonic Storm “FENGAL” [pronounced as FEINJAL] over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 12 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centred at 0530 hours IST of today, the 30th November 2024 over the same region near latitude 12.2°N and longitude 81.2°E, about 150 km east of Puducherry, 140 km southeast of Chennai, 210 km northeast of Nagappattinam and 400 km north of Trincomalee,” RMC said.

“It is likely to move nearly westwards and cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram close to Puducherry as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph during evening of November 30,” the weather department added.

The IMD said that Cyclone Fengal is being continuously monitored by the weather department from the Doppler weather radars at Chennai (S band), Sriharikota, and Chennai (X band) in addition to the satellite observations.

According to the IMD, the cyclone will hit the coastal areas of north Tamil Nadu today evening and a red alert was issued yesterday for various parts of southern states including south Andhra Pradesh coasts.

Earlier Director of Regional Metereological Centre of Chennai, S Balachandran said that the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu will be impacted more.

“Mostly coastal districts, the crossing point is between Karaikal to Mahabalipuram near Puducherry, so, all along the coastal districts, the impact will be more. There will be wind and rainfall. Today the wind speed was 50-60 kmph and gusting to 70 kmph. At one to two, there will be extremely heavy rainfall, while at many places it will be scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall,” Balachandran said.

Director of Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre in Andhra Pradesh, Srinuvas said that they have issued a warning of ‘extremely heavy rainfall’ for the districts of Nellore, Tirupati and Chittoor for the next 24 hours.

“It is likely to move in the northwest direction and intensify into a cyclonic storm. In the next six hours, it is likely to move in the northwest direction towards and cross North Tamil Nadu and the Puducherry coast…Cyclone alert has been issued for the adjoining districts of Tamil Nadu…We have given an extremely heavy rainfall warning for the districts of Nellore, Tirupati and Chittoor for the next 24 hours,” Srinuvas said. Congress To Launch National Protest Against Election Commission ‘Partisan’ Steps

Claiming that the “integrity of the entire electoral process is being severely compromised,” Congress on Friday slammed the Election Commission and vowed to launch a “national movement.”

The Congress will take up these public concerns as a national movement,” the Congress said in a statement.

Notably, Congress-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) suffered a major setback in the recently held Maharashtra state elections as the party won just 16 seats out of 288 assembly segments while its ally Shiv Sena (UBT), led by Uddhav Thackeray, won 20 seats, and the NCP (Sharad Pawar) faction secured just 10 seats.

Congress general secretary KC Venugopal said that “electoral malpractices” influenced the result of the Haryana Assembly election.

“The CWC also acknowledged that the party’s performance in Haryana has been contrary to all expectations. The INC should have formed the government in the state by a convincing margin, but it didn’t. However, there have been electoral malpractices that influenced the result in the state, which have been overlooked,” he said.

In the Haryana assembly election, Congress faced defeat, with the BJP securing a third consecutive term in government after winning 48 seats in the 90-member assembly, while the Congress only managed to secure 37 seats.

He said that the CWC accepted the party’s performance in Maharashtra, that was “unexplainable and shocking,” and it appears to be a clear case of “targeted manipulation.”

“The CWC also accepted that the party’s performance, as indeed that of its MVA allies, in Maharashtra, has been unexplainable and shocking. The electoral outcome is beyond normal understanding, and it appears to be a clear case of targeted manipulation,” he said.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also claimed that EVM has made the electoral process suspicious.

Taking to X, Kharge shared his opening statement at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, “I believe that EVM has made the electoral process suspicious. The Election Commission is a constitutional institution, so the less said about it the better. But it is the constitutional responsibility of the Election Commission to ensure free and fair elections in the country. Questions are being raised again and again as to what extent this responsibility is being fulfilled.”

Kharge said due to Congress repeated defeats, fascist forces are making their roots deeper. One by one they are taking over the institutions of the state.

“Due to our repeated defeats, fascist forces are making their roots deeper. One by one they are taking over the institutions of the state,” he said.

He also said that Congress must become the voice of the growing class of have-nots, who are suffering from unemployment, inflation, and deepening inequality.

“In the last 11 years, a large class of have-nots has emerged, who are troubled by unemployment, inflation, and deepening inequality. We have to become their strong voice. It is important for the Congress party to come to power because if we form the government, we can implement the agenda of 140 crore people of the country. We can implement the agenda of India’s progress,” he said.

Citing issues like Manipur and Sambhal, Kharge accused the BJP of raising religious issues through various means to divert the country’s attention from its failures.

“There are many issues, from Manipur to Sambhal, these are very serious matters. The BJP is trying to raise many religious issues through various means to divert the attention of the country from its failures,” he said.

He added that the Congress party needs to take tough decisions, as despite encouraging results in the Lok Sabha elections, it has suffered setbacks in the Vidhan Sabha elections.

“After achieving encouraging results in the Lok Sabha elections, we have suffered a setback in the Vidhan Sabha elections. That is why we will have to take tough decisions,” he said.

He also urged Congress leaders not to be disheartened by defeats and to move forward by overcoming the current challenges.

“Finally, I want to say that we need not be disheartened by defeat. We will have to bring about change from the grassroots level, from block, district to AICC, with a new resolve. We will have to bring about the necessary changes with time. We have overcome challenges in the past as well. Therefore, we will have to move ahead by overcoming the current challenges,” he said.

Venugopal said the Congress Working Committee (CWC) reviewed the party’s performance in the last assembly elections and decided to form internal committees at the block and district levels to address “electoral performance and organisational issues.”

Addressing a press conference, Venugopal said, “81 people attended today’s CWC meeting. We analysed the performance of the party in the recently concluded Assembly election. The CWC has decided to constitute internal committees to look into matters related to electoral performance and organisational issues in the blocks and districts.”

Venugopal also said that the victory of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in the Wayanad by-election has generated a massive wave of enthusiasm among the party workers.

“The overwhelming victory of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in the Wayanad by-election has generated a massive wave of enthusiasm among the party workers as well as the wider public,” he said.

Notably, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra secured the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat with a margin of 4,10,931 votes, defeating Sathyan Mokeri of the Communist Party of India (CPI).

He added that the party will press for the restoration of full-fledged statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

“The CWC thanks the people of Jammu and Kashmir for the confidence they have placed in the INC and NC alliance in such a clear manner. While accepting that our own performance should have been better, our party will press for the restoration of full-fledged statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.”

Notably, in Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, the National Conference-led alliance secured 48 seats, with the NC winning 42 and the Congress just six seats.

The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance emerged victorious with 132 seats, while its allies–the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde and the NCP led by Ajit Pawar–secured 57 and 41 seats, respectively.

He mentioned that the CWC had decided to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s presidency in the Congress’ plenary in 1924 at Belgaum (now called Belagavi) in December. The three-day session that began on December 26, 1924, was the only Congress session presided over by Mahatma Gandhi.

“The CWC has already passed a resolution. The party has also decided to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s presidency in 1924 at Belgaum in December. An extended Working Committee will be held, followed by a massive rally in Belgaum,” he said.

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting was held at the AICC headquarters in Delhi and was attended by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress MP and Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, Congress leader Ambika Soni, and other senior party officials.
