‘However Open-Minded You Are, An Empty Nest Can Be Emotionally Draining’

Madhuri Sharma, 55, urges elderly parents to dive back into their forgotten interests and allow their children to deal with their own stresses. Her views:

In today’s world, the “empty nest” doesn’t necessarily happen when children physically leave home; it begins when they start crafting lives of their own, where parents are no longer at the center. Let’s be honest with ourselves. Nature starts preparing us for an empty nest the moment a child is born. They go from a being that was entirely dependent on us, physically and emotionally, to growing into their own person with their own world.

From those early days, a child’s needs slowly broaden beyond just their parents. First, it’s toys and friends, then teachers and mentors. Somewhere around teenage years, that fear sets in for parents who sense that they are no longer their child’s whole world. By the time children head off to college, many no longer study in their hometowns, and you find yourself waiting for holiday visits or the occasional phone call. Some parents might even insist on “one call a day,” but realistically, you know you can’t push it.

The realization of an empty nest really hits when you find yourself in this waiting mode. Even while the child is still at home, the presence of friends, mentors, and eventually partners shifts the dynamics. When my own children got married, I found myself in that “tricky territory” of adjusting to new routines and shared priorities. Understanding as you may be, it takes time to adjust to the fact that you’re no longer the number one priority in your child’s life. This shift can be jarring for many parents, especially for those who think of themselves as modern and ‘open-minded.’

I noticed this even among my friends, cousins, and brother. They couldn’t understand why their kids wanted to live outside the family home during college, even though they gave them all the freedom they could. But we have to understand: we gave them life, but they are entirely separate individuals. Every parents should reflect on Khalil Gibran’s wisdom in his poem On Children, “Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you…”

For most parents, this realization doesn’t come naturally. We start living our lives through our kids, trying to help them live the dreams we didn’t fulfill. When you become a parent, your identity and priorities often shift toward theirs. The food we make, the stories we tell, the books we read – it all becomes about them. And for 15, maybe 20 years, our own self takes a backseat. So when the child becomes independent, and you see them creating a life that doesn’t revolve around you, it’s time to rediscover yourself. It’s time to revisit your own passions. Pick up a pen and write down the activities or interests you used to love.

Madhuri Sharma (fourth from left) with her family

It could be as simple as enjoying a quiet cup of tea or watching people go by. Even married children find it hard to let go of their parents sometimes unintentionally creating emotional traps. But I encourage parents to avoid being pulled into these dynamics. Both parents and children need space to live fully. For me, both kids’ marriages and the passing of my husband were profound life changes.

It was a strange, sudden emptiness, but I also realized my kids worried about me too. I was welcome to join them in their activities (going for movies, visiting pubs…), but it’s just different with a spouse. Their music, their food, their lifestyle – it’s not necessarily what I enjoy. I realized I didn’t want to become their responsibility. So I started looking for activities which didn’t involve them. When I took a short vacation or went to a movie with friends, it was for myself as much as for them. It gave my kids a sense of freedom, a sense of relief. And this is very important. Do we really want our children to keep worrying about us when they have their own lives?

Movies like Baghban can feed into this narrative of children as villains if they don’t center their lives around us. But our kids have their own stresses, and us going into ‘victim mode’ every time we need them doesn’t help. We need to start doing things for ourselves. I used to love listening to music, meeting friends, reading books– things that took backseat during parenting. I’ve realised that this is the best time to reconnect with what we loved. When we were growing up, we did things to impress our parents, then our peers, then for our careers. Now, we can do things just for us.

We don’t need to earn anyone’s approval or wonder if this particular interest will add to your CV. I urge every parent to dive back into those forgotten interests. It doesn’t have to be perfect. You don’t need to be a great singer , sing because you want to or a dance even if you have two left feet. Just go out there and sing, scribble, or dance if it brings you joy. Pick up that pencil, those dancing shoes or simply sit and road life goes by– this is the time to reclaim your life and let your kids live theirs.

Governor Santosh Gangwar administered the oath to Hemant Soren.

The swearing-in ceremony was held at Morabadi Ground in Ranchi with several prominent leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and KC Venugopal from Congress, in attendence.

This is the first time in Jharkhand that an incumbent government, which has completed five years in office, has returned to power.

Soren tendered his resignation as Jharkhand CM to Governor Santosh Gangwar on Sunday, November 24 and staked a claim to form government at the Raj Bhawan.

Sheikh Hasina Calls For Immediate Release Of Priest Chinmoy Krishna Das

Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina on Thursday condemned the ‘unjust’ arrest of former ISKCON priest Chinmoy Krishna Das, and demanded his ‘immediate release’.

Hasina also expressed concerns over the attacks against minorities and their places of worship and called for ensuring safety of religious freedom of all communities.

“A senior leader of the Sanatan religious community has been unjustly arrested, and I demand his immediate release. Temples have been set ablaze in Chittagong. Previously, mosques, shrines, churches, monasteries, and the homes of the Ahmadiyya community have been attacked, vandalised, looted, and burned. The religious freedom and safety of all communities must be ensured,” Sheikh Hasina said in a statement.

Hasina further accused the current interim government led by Muhammad Yunus of ‘harassing’ the leaders of her party, the Awami League.

“After killing countless leaders, activists of the Awami League, students, and members of the law enforcement agencies, the regime is now resorting to harassment through attacks, lawsuits, and arrests. I vehemently condemn and protest against these anarchic actions.” Hasina said.

Further speaking about the current situation in Bangladesh Shiekh Hasina said, “An advocate has been murdered in Chittagong, and I strongly condemn this heinous act. Those responsible for this murder must be identified and brought to justice without delay. This incident is a gross violation of human rights. The lawyer was performing his professional duties, and those who brutally killed him were terrorists. No matter who they are, they must face punishment.”

Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was arrested on charges of sedition for allegedly raising a flag on a stand displaying Bangladesh’s national flag. He was presented before a Chittagong court on Tuesday. The court denied his bail plea and sent him to custody.

The arrest has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for his immediate release.

In another concerning development, a petition was filed by a lawyer demanding a ban on ISKCON in Bangladesh, calling it a “radical organization” engaging in activities designed to provoke communal unrest, as reported by the local media.

Sheikh Hasina further accused the interim government of Bangladesh of “unlawfully seizing the power” and condemend the “direct and indirect persecution” of ordinary people.

“The current regime, which unlawfully seized power, has demonstrated failure in every sector. It has failed to control the prices of essential commodities and to ensure the safety of citizens’ lives. I strongly condemn the direct and indirect persecution of ordinary people,” she said.

Earlier this year, students’ protests against the quota system in government jobs turned into a massive anti-government movement, forcing Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee from the country.

This was followed by the establishment of an interim government under Nobel Peace Laureate Muhammad Yunus. (ANI)

The Fault Is Not EVM, But In Rahul: BJP’s Sanjay Tandon

Bharatiya Janata Party co-incharge in Himachal Pradesh, Sanjay Tandon hit out at the Congress party on Thursday, saying that the latter is losing elections due to poor management by their leadership and not because of EVMs.

While addressing the party’s state level organisation festival meeting, he retorted to the questions on EVMs raised by Congress president Mallikharjun Kharge.

“Congress had to face a crushing defeat in the Maharashtra assembly elections not because of EVMs, but because of the poor management of its leadership. Kharge to change Rahul, not EVMs. He should consider bringing someone else in his place,” Tandon said during his speech.

“The fault is not in the machine, but in the leadership of Congress. Congress should change Rahul Gandhi, not EVM. No opponent gives such unsolicited advice, but there should be enough courtesy in politics that after sitting together in the assembly and parliament for so many years, we can give them unsolicited advice,” he added.

He further hit out at Rahul Gandhi, saying that the party has lost elections due to “RBM-Rahul’s Bad Management.”

“Congress president Kharge is talking about keeping EVMs aside, while the public has kept Congress aside,” Tandon said.

He further said that the Congress has been sidelined in Maharashtra, highlighting the party’s poor performance of winning just 16 seats in the state.

“In Maharashtra, the BJP-supported Mahayuti government has registered a landslide victory, while the Congress has won only 16 seats out of 288 assembly seats. This clearly shows the decline in the support base of the Congress,” he said.

Also mentioning the Jharkhand elections, he said that despite the JMM-led Mahagathbandan winning the assembly elections (which Congress is part of), the Congress is still far behind that the BJP. In the Jharkhand assembly elections, BJP won 21 seats whereas Congress won 16 seats. “In fact, this crushing defeat of Congress has disappointed the party, due to which Rahul Gandhi and other leaders of Congress and opposition are making absurd statements in anger,” he said. Conspiracy Was Hatched To Stop Kejriwal’s Work: Atishi

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on Thursday alleged a conspiracy that was hatched against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, saying that he was arrested so that the work being done by him as the Chief Minister could stop.

“Arvind Kejriwal came out of jail and all the work is being done on a “war footing,” the Delhi Chief Minister said, adding that many decisions were taken in the cabinet meeting, including the restart of the Electric Vehicle (EV) policy that would help curb the pollution.

“For 10 years, the AAP government of Delhi has been working for the people of Delhi in every field. The Delhi government has also been working to make Delhi ultra-modern through new innovative policies. When other parties did not do this in their states, a conspiracy was hatched to stop the work of Arvind Kejriwal and then Arvind Kejriwal was arrested. After that, pensions were stopped, salaries were stopped, and even sewer water disposal was stopped,” Delhi CM Atishi said in a presser.

CM Atishi informed that 12 per cent EV vehicles were registered in Delhi between the years 2023 and 2024, which is double the national average. She added that the EV policy was stopped after Kejriwal went to jail.

“Arvind Kejriwal was sent to jail and EV policy was also obstructed. For the last ten months, there has been no subsidy on EVs and no exemption in road tax. Today, the cabinet of the Delhi government has decided to start an EV policy. EV policy has been extended till 30 March 2025,” CM Atishi said.

“Anyone who has bought an electric vehicle after January 1, 2024, will get subsidy and the road tax exemption will be available again on new EVs,” she added.

CM Atishi informed about the Delhi SC/ST/OBC/Minority and Handicapped Finance & Development Corporation Limited (DSFDC), a corporation meant for people from marginalised communities to take loans.

“125 employees here were not getting salary since January February. Today, the cabinet has decided to give a grant of 17 crores for them,” she added.

A Bachelor of Optometry program will run from the Guru Nanak Eye Centre, where the Delhi government has decided to open an optometry training wing.

Speaking about the notice issued by Delhi High Court over implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) in the national capital, CM Atishi said that the government was ready to implement the schemes. She said, however, there were limited categories in the Ayushman Bharat.

“The Delhi government has always shown commitment towards health facilities. The Delhi government is ready to implement these principal Ayushman Yojanas. But there is a contradiction in the facilities of the Delhi government and Ayushman Yojana. Everything is free in Delhi government hospitals. However, there are limited categories in Ayushman Bharat. It also says that if you have a refrigerator, vehicle or concrete house, you will not get the benefit. Ayushman Bharat puts a cap of Rs 5 lakh on a family. If two members are ill at the same time, one will not get the benefit. We do not want to remove free medical care. Therefore, we have given direction to the health department to consider how to implement Ayushman Yojana without harming anyone.” CM Atishi said.

Speaking on the recent blast in Prashant Vihar near a school, CM Atishi said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were responsible for such incidents.

“A blast took place near a school two streets away from the Prashant Vihar blast site. Such incidents are coming to light every day. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the BJP are responsible for such incidents. The Centre has only one responsibility in Delhi: law and order. All other responsibilities are with the Delhi government. Today, Delhi has become like Mumbai with its underworld in the 90s. I would like to tell the BJP that if the Home Minister gets free from election campaigning, he should also think about the safety of the people of Delhi,” CM Atishi said. (ANI)
