Chhattisgarh: 14 Naxals Killed In Encounter With Police In Chhattisgarh-Odisha Border

Fourteen Naxals were killed in an encounter with Chhattisgarh police at the Chhattisgarh-Odisha border on Monday, the Chhattisgarh Police stated.

According to the police, a member of the Naxal group, who had a bounty of 1 crore rupees on his head, was also killed in the encounter.

According to the police the encounter is still underway and more details are awaited on the matter.

On January 17, two Border Security Force (BSF) jawans sustained injuries after Naxals set off an improvised explosive device (IED) in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district.

The incident happened when in the morning when a BSF road-opening party was being deployed up between Camp Garpa and Garpa village, added the police official. The incident has been confirmed by Narayanpur SP Prabhat Kumar and detailed information will be shared by the officials later in the day.

On January 16, two CRPF jawans were injured in a pressure IED blast planted by Naxalites near Putkel village under the Basaguda police station in Bijapur district. T

On January 12, five Naxalites including two women were killed in an encounter with security forces in Bijapur. Several automatic and other weapons and explosives were recovered from the forests under the National Park area of the Bijapur district. The recovered weapons included one SLR rifle, one 12-bore rifle, two single-shot rifles, one BGL launcher, and one locally made Bharmar gun, along with explosives, Maoist literature, and other Naxal materials.

Speaking to ANI about the South Bastar naxal encounter, IG Bastar P Sundarraj said, “Bodies of 12 Naxalites, including 5 women, were recovered in the encounter that took place at 9 pm between security forces and Naxalites on January 16.”

“A large number of arms and ammunition were also recovered. We are moving ahead in our goal of taking action against Naxalism,” said P Sundarraj. (ANI)

Indian-Origin Ramaswamy Withdraws From Trump’s ‘DOGE’

Indian-origin entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy will no longer co-head the Department of Government Efficiency with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the former announced hours after US President Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday (local time).

Ramaswamy is planning to announce a run for Ohio Governor next week, Politico reported.

In a post on X, he said, “It was my honor to help support the creation of DOGE. I’m confident that Elon & team will succeed in streamlining government. I’ll have more to say very soon about my future plans in Ohio. Most importantly, we’re all-in to help President Trump make America great again!”

Musk made it known recently that he wanted Ramaswamy out of DOGE, sources told Politico on the condition of anonymity.

Ramaswamy “just burned through the bridges and he finally burned Elon,” said a Republican strategist close to Trump advisers. “Everyone wants him out of Mar-a-Lago, out of DC”.

The H1-B visa debate was the final nail in his coffin, Politico reported. In late December, Ramaswamy criticized American culture, saying that tech companies hire foreign workers in part because of a mindset in the country that has “venerated mediocrity over excellence,” Politico reported.

In a statement, Trump transition spokesperson Anna Kelly praised Ramaswamy, saying he “played a critical role in helping us create DOGE” and that his plan to run for governor “requires him to remain outside of DOGE based on the structure that we announced today.”

A source told Politico that Musk and Ramaswamy are now on good terms and that “the reality is that it wasn’t possible” to run for governor and co-lead DOGE “both at once.”A major divide emerged within Donald Trump’s MAGA team, as Musk and Ramaswamy who advocated for the expansion of the visa program for ‘highly skilled workers’ faced heavy backlash from within President-elect’s base, CNN reported.

In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Musk emphasised the importance of attracting top engineering talent to maintain America’s technological edge. “The number of people who are super talented engineers AND super motivated in the USA is far too low.”

Ramaswamy, a first-generation American and Trump’s appointee to lead the Department of Government Efficiency, echoed Musk’s sentiments. He argued that cultural stagnation and a preference for mediocrity have led to a reliance on foreign-born talent.

At a rally on Sunday, Trump talked about DOGE and did not indicate that any changes were imminent. He said, “We have [Musk] and Vivek and some great people working on a thing called costs.” (ANI)

Delhi: 699 Candidates In Fray For Feb 5 Polls, Maximum 23 In New Delhi

A total of 699 candidates will contest polls on 70 Delhi Assembly seats in the February 5 election, the Election Commission (EC) said.

According to the poll body, the deadline for submitting nominations was January 17 while the scrutiny was done on January 18 and the last date of withdrawal was January 20.

The New Delhi constituency, from where former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is contesting elections has the highest number of 23 candidates. BJP has fielded Parvesh Verma (son of former CM Sahib Singh Verma) and Congress has named Sandeep Dikshit (son of former CM Sheila Dikshit) from the seat.

Patel Nagar and Kasturba Nagar have the lowest, with just five candidates each. Followed by Tilak Nagar, Karol Bagh, Gandhi Nagar, Greater Kailash, Mangol Puri, Tri Nagar with six candidates each, as per ECI.

Key contenders for Greater Kailash seat include AAP’s Saurabh Bhardwaj, BJP’s Shikha Rai and Congress’ Garvit Singhvi. Key contenders for Kasturba Nagar seat include AAP’s Ramesh Pahalwan, BJP’s Neeraj Basoya and Congress’ Abhishek Dutt.

With polling day approaching, Delhi’s political landscape is heating up. BJP has alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party, which once claimed it would not allow criminals in the assembly to ensure the passage of strict laws, had fielded the highest number of candidates with criminal records.

Speaking to ANI, BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla said, “Aam Aadmi Party used to say that they do not want criminals in their assembly because criminals will not be able to pass important and strict laws. But when the list (of candidates) was released, it was found that the Aam Aadmi Party has the highest number of people with criminal records nearly 60%, followed by Congress. This means that Aam Aadmi Party has taken a U-turn once again.”

Notably, 70 assembly seats in Delhi will go to the polls in a single phase on February 5, and the votes will be counted on February 8.

The Congress, which was in power for 15 consecutive years in Delhi, has suffered setbacks in the last two assembly elections and has failed to win any seat. In contrast, the AAP dominated the 2015 and 2020 assembly elections by winning 67 and 62 seats respectively out of a total of 70 seats while the BJP got only three and eight seats. (ANI)

US Will Now Recognise Only Two Genders, Male And Female: Donald Trump

In a major announcement just after being sworn in as the 47th US President, Donald Trump declared that it will be the official policy of the United States to recognise only two genders – male and female.

Trump said his administration will work to make a “merit-based” and “colourblind society.”

The move is part of Trump’s plans to change the US government’s policies on gender and diversity, especially targeting Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (DEI) programmes.

Several US companies, including McDonald’s, Walmart and Facebook parent company Meta, have ended or scaled back their DEI programmes since Trump was elected in November last.

Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States at the US Capitol in Washington, DC. US Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath to Trump.

Prior to Trump’s swearing-in, JD Vance was sworn in as the 50th US Vice-President.

During his inaugural address, he started executing the promises he made during the campaign and announced that he would declare a “national emergency” at the southern border and send in the troops to stop the “disastrous invasion” of the country.

He further stressed that the US will deport “millions and millions of criminal aliens” and will also designate the cartels as foreign terrorist organisations.

“First I will declare a national emergency at the southern border. All illegal entry will immediately be halted and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the place from which they came. We will reinstate my ‘remain in Mexico’ policy,” Trump said after taking oath.

“I will abandon the practice of catch and release. I will send troops to the southern border to repel the disastrous invasion of our country. Under the orders I signed today, we will also be designating the cartels as foreign terrorist organisations,” he added.

After taking the oath, Trump declared that the “golden age” of America had begun and today marks the ‘Liberation Day’ for the country.

The 47th US President further spoke on the inflation in the country and reiterated his earlier slogan of ‘drill baby drill’ which refers to his promise of drilling for oil.”The inflation crisis was caused by massive overspending and escalating energy prices, and that is why today I will also declare a national energy emergency. We will drill, baby, drill,” Trump said.

Referring to the wildfires in Los Angeles, the US president criticised the response of the administration and emphasised that this can’t be allowed to happen.

“More recently Los Angeles, where we are watching fires still tragically burn. From weeks ago without even a token of defence, they’re raging through the houses and communities, even affecting some of the wealthiest and most powerful individuals in our country, some of whom are sitting here right now. They don’t have a home any longer, that’s interesting, but we can’t let this happen,” Trump said. (ANI)

Saif Ali Khan Attack Case: Police Take Accused to Actor’s Home to Recreate Scene

The arrested accused in the stabbing attack on actor Saif Ali Khan was taken to different locations by the Mumbai police as part of the investigation to recreate the crime scene.

On early Tuesday morning, police officials, along with the accused, identified as Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, visited several locations to recreate the crime scene. The accused was first taken to Saif Ali Khan’s Bandra residence, where the attack took place. The police team then moved to the National College bus stop. The team was also seen leaving from the railway station in a police jeep and returning to the Bandra Police Station.

The attack occurred last week when the intruder entered the actor’s home with alleged intentions of theft. Saif, attempting to intervene during a confrontation between the intruder and his housemaid, sustained stab wounds to his thoracic spine.

As per the police statement, various investigation teams were formed to probe the crime, and a case has been registered under sections 311, 312, 331(4), 331(6), and 331(7) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).

Further, according to the police, the accused was about to flee to his native village when he was detained at Hiranandani Estate in Thane. It was revealed that the accused is a native of the Jhalokati district in Bangladesh, according to the police. The accused was sent to five-day police custody by the Bandra Holiday Court on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Saif Ali Khan is being treated at Lilavati Hospital and is reportedly recovering well. (ANI)

Donald Trump Signs Executive Order To Withdraw US From Paris Climate Accord

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Treaty — just as he did in his first term. It’s among a slew of executive actions he signed in front of thousands of supporters at Capitol One Arena.

However, the Trump administration’s move against the 2015 Paris accord in 2017 was reversed by Joe Biden on his first day in office in 2021.

Paris Agreement is an international agreement to combat climate change, and nearly 200 countries have committed to keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius and ideally below 1.5 degrees. Each country is responsible for developing its own plan to uphold the commitment. However, the agreement is not a legally binding treaty.

Trump also signed a directive to the Federal Government ordering the restoration of Freedom of Speech and preventing government censorship of free speech going forward, adding that he signed a directive to the Federal Government ending the weaponisation of government against political adversaries of the previous administration.

He further, signed more Executive Actions in the Oval Office and took questions from the press.

Earlier, during his speech at the Capitol One Arena, President Donald Trump highlighted the success of his “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement, calling it the most successful political operation in the history of the country and the world.

“MAGA was the most successful political operation and movement in the history of our country and the world. We are not finished yet. We have a long way to go,” Trump said.

RG Kar Case: Leaders, Doctors Call For Capital Punishment For Roy

Leaders and doctors on Monday criticised the sentence of life imprisonment for the convict in the RG Kar rape-murder case by the Sealdah court, demanding a death penalty for this heinous crime.

The case involves the rape and murder of a trainee doctor whose body was found on August 9 in the hospital’s seminar room.

The Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court announced life imprisonment for the accused Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar rape and murder case. Along with this, the court has also fined Rs 50,000 to the accused.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed dissatisfaction over the court giving life imprisonment to the convict in the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case and said if the case had been with Kolkata Police, they would have ensured a death penalty.

“I learned about the sentencing from the media. We have always demanded capital punishment and we continue to stand by it. However, this is the court’s decision and I can’t say much about this. For three other cases, Kolkata police ensured capital punishment through thorough investigations concluded within 54-60 days. This was a serious case. Had it been under our purview, we would have ensured the death penalty long back,” CM Mamata said while addressing the media at Malda.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose stressed that even a severe punishment does not end the crime in total and called for a robust and proactive policy to combat these atrocities.

In a video message, Bose said, “The court’s verdict is now loud and clear. That has to be respected in letter and spirit. This is not merely a question of crime and punishment. There is more to it. Punishment, no matter how severe doesn’t end the crime in total. The rising incidents of rape, assault and murder are alarming and reflect a deeper societal (sickness). It is imperative that we implement a robust and proactive policy to combat these atrocities.”

Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict, calling for in-depth investigation into the case.

“We wanted the highest punishment (for the convict Sanjay Roy). Being an elected representative, I can’t say anything against the court verdict. The public of West Bengal does not believe that only one person is involved in the RG Kar rape-murder case. I think there should be more depth in this, as Sanjay is saying that there were also police and other people involved,” Majumdar said.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that the common people of Bengal are disappointed with the verdict as it is not as per their expectations.

“The people of West Bengal expected the strictest punishment for the accused and others who are involved in this case. We saw that only one accused was punished, so this decision of the court is not as per the expectations of the common people. Judges give decisions based on evidence, whatever is presented to them, the decision will be based on that… but the common people of Bengal are disappointed,” Chowdhury told ANI.

Speaking to the media, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said “We are not satisfied with the verdict of the court. The court gave death sentences in those cases which were under West Bengal police. The RG Kar case was under CBI, if it had been under the Kolkata Police, the punishment would have been the death penalty.”

Junior doctors held a protest outside the Sealdah Court, demanding stricter punishment for the convict Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar rape-murder case.

Speaking to ANI, a junior doctor asserted that they would approach the higher court with their demand.

“We wanted a strict and exemplary punishment, this punishment is not enough. We will move to higher courts seeking a stricter judgement,” he said.

Vinay Aggarwal, Chairman of the IMA Action Committee expressed dissatisfaction, stating that the entire nation was angered by the incident for not giving a death penalty to the culprit.

“The whole of the medical fraternity was angered by the incident. Bengal was boiling, the country was boiling…Not only the medical fraternity but the whole country is dissatisfied with not giving capital punishment to the culprit. Capital punishment should be given for these heinous crimes. You cannot ignore the statements of the culprit where he is saying that more people are involved in this…We demand the High Court that he should not be let aside with just life imprisonment instead of capital punishment,” the Chairman of the IMA Committee said.

FORDA General Secretary, Sarvesh Pandey told ANI, “FORDA spearheaded the entire movement against the RG Kar rape-murder case. The verdict that has come now is surprising. The medical community is totally dissatisfied with this verdict…”

He said that the verdict was “unacceptable’ and said their body of layers would study the verdict in detail.

“It should have been a capital punishment… This is not acceptable to us. Our lawyers are now looking into the basis on which the judge has given the order, so we are studying it and after studying it we will see what to do,” he added.

The victim’s father expressed deep dissatisfaction with the investigation conducted by the CBI and Kolkata police and said that they want justice, not compensation.

Speaking to ANI, the father of the trainee doctor said that the Kolkata Police have given them more pain than the passing away of their daughter.

“What the Court thinks as a good judgement based on the evidence produced by the CBI, the Court has given that verdict…We have a lot of questions on the investigation done by CBI…We did not go to the court for compensation. We want justice, not compensation…Kolkata police did wrong and the CBI will have to do something…The Kolkata police have given us more pain than the passing away of my daughter,” he said. (ANI)

Vantara To Create Chain-Free Sanctuary For 20 Rescued Elephants

Vantara, the wildlife preservation project founded by Anant Ambani, is all set to welcome 20 rescued elephants–10 males, 8 females, 1 sub-adult, and 1 calf–freed from the exploitative logging industry in Arunachal Pradesh.

This rescue operation, carried out with the approval of the High Powered Committee constituted by the Tripura High Court and entrusted by the Supreme Court of India, has been conducted with the full consent of the current owners of the animals.

The elephants will soon find their permanent home at Vantara, an environment that naturally mirrors their native habitat, where they will live chain-free and will never be forced into labour.

The rescued elephants include individuals like Laxmi, a 10-year-old captive-born sub-adult who struggles to bear weight on her hind legs due to deep, untreated wounds and suffers from a fresh, painful 1-inch diameter hole piercing her sensitive right ear pinna–both inflicted during the brutal taming process to establish human dominance.

Maya, a 2-year-old captive-born calf, was rescued alongside her mother, Rongmoti, who endured large harness-induced lesions on her chest and buttocks from prolonged logging work. Ramu, a bull elephant, was found heavily restrained with both his forelegs and hindlegs tightly tethered together to control his 4-6 month musth period, resulting in immense physical and psychological distress.

Babulal, another bull elephant, suffered from a severely broken and bleeding tail, caused by a conflict with a wild bull elephant during foraging. Years of captivity had stripped him of the natural instincts needed to defend himself. In addition to providing lifelong care for the elephants, the project offers new livelihood opportunities for the owners, mahouts, and their families at Vantara.

The mahouts and others involved will undergo intensive training in humane and scientifically backed methods of elephant management, ensuring a future of compassionate care for the elephants and empowering their caregivers with the knowledge and skills to support this approach.

The organization has secured all required documentation under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, including obtaining a No Objection Certificate from the Gujarat Forest Department and a Transport Permit from the Arunachal Pradesh Forest Department.

The elephants will be transported in specially designed elephant ambulances, with the calf Maya traveling alongside her mother. A dedicated team of over 200 experts, including elephant veterinarians, paravets, senior caretakers, and ambulance drivers from Vantara, will ensure the safe and compliant transportation of the animals, adhering to strict transportation guidelines and animal welfare standards.

A research paper published in 2020 in Gajah, the biannual journal of the IUCN/SSC Asian Elephant Specialist Group, reveals that a significant number of privately owned elephants are bred in captivity in Arunachal Pradesh.

These elephants are often managed in close proximity to forested areas, where captive cow elephants come into contact with wild bulls. However, private ownership of elephants is declining, as the demand for their use in forestry operations has diminished following the logging ban.

Tabang Jamoh, Divisional Forest Officer, Namsai, confirmed, “With an active breeding population of approximately 200 captive elephants in Arunachal Pradesh, DNA profiling is being conducted to closely monitor their health and welfare. The transfer of 20 elephants to the Radhe Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust at Vantara, as directed by the Supreme Court-appointed committee, ensures a brighter future for these animals. This initiative enhances animal welfare while providing local communities with alternative livelihoods, striking a balance between conservation, community well-being, and forest protection.”

Dr. Sorang Tadap, Veterinary Officer at Itanagar Biological Park, stated, “Captive elephants often suffer from severe health issues, including injuries, arthritis, and psychological trauma due to harsh labor, training, and prolonged chaining. Many calves sustain deep leg injuries during training, while adults face ongoing risks from conflicts with wild bulls. There is an urgent need for dedicated hospital facilities offering round-the-clock care and physiotherapy, which our state currently lacks. It is encouraging to see facilities like Vantara providing advanced medical treatment and lifelong care for rescued elephants, setting a vital benchmark for their welfare.”

Chow Thamasala Mein, one of the elephant owners, highlighted the uniqueness of the initiative: “With wood logging banned, we no longer wish to use our elephants for such labor. We are pleased they will now live a life of care at Vantara.

This initiative also provides stable jobs and a steady income for our families, securing a brighter future for our children.”

In the exploitative logging industry, elephants suffer greatly as they are forced to carry heavy logs and work tirelessly for long hours. They endure physical abuse, malnutrition, arthritis, and lack of medical care. Constantly chained, they are deprived of the freedom to roam and engage in natural behaviors. These harsh conditions also inflict severe psychological trauma, often evident in the form of stereotypic behaviors such as head bobbing, swaying, and weaving, leading to long-term welfare compromises.

Despite their intelligence and social nature, these elephants are treated as machines, stripped of their dignity and well-being. At Vantara, they will have the opportunity to rejuvenate and live as elephants should. (ANI)

Open To Dialogue With New US Administration About Ukraine Conflict: Putin

Ahead of US President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed willingness to hold communication with the incoming US administration about the Ukraine conflict and called elimination of the root cause of the crisis as the “most important thing,” TASS reported.

He made the remarks during the meeting of Russia’s Security Council. “We are also open to dialogue with the new US administration about the Ukrainian conflict. The most important thing there is to eliminate the root causes of the crisis, which we have talked about many times. This is the most essential thing,” TASS quoted Putin as saying.

Donald Trump has pledged to bring an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine which has been ongoing since February 2022, halt the chaos in the Middle East, and take measures to prevent the outbreak of World War 3.

“I will end the war in Ukraine, I will stop the chaos in the Middle East and I will prevent World War 3 from happening – and you have no idea how close we are,” he said in his MAGA Victory Rally on Sunday.

Notably, US has been providing military assistance to Ukraine ever since the war between Moscow and Kyiv started in 2022. US has also been imposing sanctions against Russia for launching war against Ukraine.

Earlier in December, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia is ready to normalise relations with the United States and other Western countries provided that such efforts do not compromise Russian interests, the state media reported.

In an interview with Russian TV and radio outlet VGTRK, Putin said, “It is possible to do everything if there is desire. We have never abandoned this desire.” The Russian President was responding to a question about the possibility for Russia and the United States to normalise their relations, as reported by the Russian news agency TASS.

He stressed that everything changes in international relations and only interests remain invariable, in this case, “the interests of Russia and its people.”

“If we see that the situation changes in a way that there are opportunities and prospects for building relations with other countries, then we are ready for that. It is not a question of us but it’s a question of them. But this should be without detriment to the interests of the Russian Federation,” Putin emphasised.

During his visit to Paris to attend the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral in December. Trump held a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine. It was Trump’s first meeting with Zelenskyy after he won elections in November.

After the meeting, Trump shared a post on Truth Social calling on Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate the war’s end and even added that China can help. He even mentioned that Russia is in a “weakened state right now” partly due to “Ukraine and a bad economy.”

Taking to social media platform Truth Social, Trump said, “Assad is gone. He has fled his country. His protector, Russia, Russia, Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, was not interested in protecting him any longer. There was no reason for Russia to be there in the first place. They lost all interest in Syria because of Ukraine, where close to 600,000 Russian soldiers lay wounded or dead, in a war that should never have started, and could go on forever.”

“Russia and Iran are in a weakened state right now, one because of Ukraine and a bad economy, the other because of Israel and its fighting success. Likewise, Zelenskyy and Ukraine would like to make a deal and stop the madness. They have ridiculously lost 400,000 soldiers, and many more civilians. There should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin. Too many lives are being so needlessly wasted, too many families destroyed, and if it keeps going, it can turn into something much bigger, and far worse. I know Vladimir well. This is his time to act. China can help. The World is waiting,” he added. (ANI)

President-elect Donald Trump along side outgoing US President Joe Biden arrived at US Capitol together from White House for the swearing-in ceremony on Monday.

It is tradition for the outgoing President to accompany the president-elect to the US Capitol for the swearing-in ceremony.

Additionally, Outgoing Vice President Kamala Harris and Vice President-elect JD Vance also arrived at White House and is headed to US Capitol.

This comes after Trump along with his wife Milania Trump had pre-inauguration tea with Joe and Jill Biden at the White House.

Meanwhile, Joe Biden confirmed that he left a letter in the Oval Office for Trump, CNN reported.

Vice President-elect JD Vance will be sworn in first, followed by Donald Trump, who will take the oath of office and deliver his inaugural address. The ceremonial proceedings are set to take place at the US Capitol Rotunda, where Trump will take the oath of office today, roughly two weeks after his electoral college victory was officially certified by Congress.

After the swearing-in, President Trump will take part in the signing ceremony in the President’s Room, a tradition that began in 1981 with President Ronald Reagan.
