Jennifer, Ben Affleck Finalize Divorce Settlement

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have officially settled the terms of their divorce, bringing an end to their brief two-year marriage.

The announcement, confirmed through court documents obtained by E! News on January 6, reveals that both parties have agreed on the terms of the divorce, and the split appears to be amicable.

The divorce filing, which was submitted by Lopez in August 2024, marks the culmination of their marriage, which began in a Las Vegas ceremony in 2022.

According to the settlement, both Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck will retain the earnings they individually acquired during their time together.

Neither party will be required to pay spousal support, and Lopez will revert to using her maiden name, “Lopez,” after having changed it to “Affleck” following their wedding, as per E! News.

Lopez had filed for divorce on August 20, 2024, citing the couple’s separation as having occurred on April 26, 2024.

Speculation about their relationship had been mounting in the months leading up to the filing.

Lopez’s solo appearance at the 2024 Met Gala and various promotional events added fuel to the fire.

As per E! News, in a candid interview with comedian Nikki Glaser, Lopez opened up about the emotional toll the breakup took on her, describing how her “whole f–king world exploded” after the separation, adding, “You have to be complete if you want something that’s more complete.”

“You have to be good on your own. I thought I learned that, but I didn’t,” she said.

Following the divorce, Lopez has embraced the opportunity to focus on herself. She admitted that she was not actively seeking a new relationship, telling Glaser, “There’s no new bar because I’m not looking for anybody…What if I’m just free?”

Lopez also shared that cancelling her tour and spending time away from the public eye allowed her to reconnect with herself and her family.

Despite their split, Lopez and Affleck have maintained a cordial relationship, often seen attending family events together.

In September, Lopez and Affleck were spotted at a family gathering with their children, including Affleck’s kids from his previous marriage to Jennifer Garner: Seraphina, and Samuel, and Lopez’s twins, Max and Emme.

The former couple also reunited for a holiday meal in Los Angeles just before Christmas, sharing a meal with family members at Soho House, as per E! News.

In the same interview, Lopez spoke about the value of focusing on her personal growth during this tumultuous period.

“I just needed to be with my kids and myself and really dig down deep into things that were happening in my life,” she shared, adding, “It was probably the hardest time of my life, but it was also the best time because I got to do that work on myself.” (ANI)

We Are Sure There Will Be Fair Elections In Delhi: BJP’s Satish Upadhyay

BJP candidate from Malviya Nagar Assembly constituency, Satish Upadhyay asserted that the Election Commission of India would hold fair elections in the National Capital

“It is welcome. The Election Commission is working very well in Delhi. We are sure there will be fair elections in Delhi. After the dates are announced, the candidates will contact the voters and the BJP government will be formed for sure…,” he told ANI.

Replying to the query, regarding alleged voter deletion, he said, “It is a part of their (AAP) politics to put pressure on the Election Commission.”

The schedule for the Delhi assembly polls will be announced on Tuesday afternoon, as per the Election Commission of India.

AAP won 62 out of the 70 seats in the 2020 assembly elections and BJP secured eight seats.

Earlier, Aam Aadmi Party Chief Arvind Kejriwal claimed that “Large-Scale” fraud in voter addition and deletions in the New Delhi Assembly seat is taking place.

In a post on X, Kejriwal cited a letter from Chief Minister Atishi sent to Delhi Chief Electoral Officer. “Large-scale fraud taking place in voter additions and deletions in the New Delhi assembly. Delhi CM Atishi ji writes this letter to CEC presenting evidence and seeking time to meet,” he said.

CM Atishi, in her letter to the Delhi CEO, said, “I am writing to urgently draw your attention towards a significant surge in voter addition and deletion applications in the New Delhi Assembly Constituency over the past few days. “She mentioned that from October 29, 2024, to January 2, 2025, a total of 13,276 Form-6 were received. “From October 29 to January 2, 6,166 Form-7 were received,” CM Atishi said.

“Total no of votes, as per draft electoral rolls published after summary revision on 29 October 2024, is 1,06,873. Number of votes sought to be deleted is 6,166, which is 5.77 per cent of total votes,” She added.

The Delhi CM, in her letter, said that as per various rules, if the number of deletions sought is more than 2 per cent of total votes, then the Election Registration Officer (ERO) will personally verify each deletion request.

In its counter-response, BJP Delhi president Virendraa Sachdeva accused Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Raghav Chadha and Sanjay Singh of threatening the election officer and called for action against them. This came after the New Delhi District Election Officer wrote a letter to Delhi’s Chief Electoral Officer on the issue of AAP leaders’ allegations related to voter deletion in the New Delhi Assembly Constituency area. Sachdeva further alleged that Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, Arvind Kejriwal, Sanjay Singh and Raghav Chadha are involved in the conspiracy to murder democracy. (ANI)

Kejriwal Trying To Influence Polls, Alleges BJP Delhi Chief Sachdeva

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Delhi unit Chief Virendraa Sachdeva alleged that Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Admi Party is attempting to “influence” the Delhi assembly polls, dates for which will be announced later in the day at a press conference scheduled to be held by the Election Commission.

“The people are also waiting to get the dates on which they would be free from this ‘AAPda’ government. It is time to bid farewell to the loot committed by the Delhi Government…,” Sachdeva told ANI.

On DEO’s letter regarding the AAP, the BJP leader said, “We have been saying this for the last 3 months that Arvind Kejriwal and his team have been trying to influence the elections. Raghav Chadha and Sanjay Singh threatened the elections officers on public holidays. This shows they have completely lost their ground…”

Ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, the New Delhi District Administration has requested police protection for the District Election Officer due to concerns about potential disruptions to the electoral process.

The Additional District Magistrate, Nishant Bodh, cited the frequent presence of political party representatives at the election office and the possibility of breach of peace and pressure on election officials.

In a letter sent to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi, the ADM wrote, “I am writing to bring to your attention the frequent presence of representatives of political parties in the office of District Election Office in light of the Delhi Vidhan Sabha elections, 2025. It is imperative to mention that under such circumstances, there is a possibility of breach of peace and pressures being imposed on the office functionaries including DEO in order to disturb the process of conduct of election.”

The request comes amid allegations of large-scale voter fraud in the New Delhi Assembly constituency.

Dynastic Politics & Daddy’s Business

Syria just saw the end of 50 years of rule by the Al-Asad family when President Bashar Al-Asad fled the country to seek asylum in Russia. His ouster was somewhat similar to that of Bangladesh’s Sheikh Hasina’s departure from Dhaka last August.

A trained eye surgeon, Bashar may or may not begin medical practice in Moscow. Hasina has been active on social media defying her opponents back home. Only a miracle could take her back to Dhaka like Napoleon returned to France. But her party stands a chance, with or without her or her son Sajib Joy Wajed as the leader.

The issue is wide open, and so is the one about Hasina’s chief rival Begum Khaleda Zia. The twice-prime minister is out of jail and political wilderness. Said to be ill, she may promote her son, Tareq Zia, with cases against him being quickly disposed of. That opens the way to his return from exile and to politics. The return of the Zia dynasty seems likely.

Is the rule by political dynasties growing or ending? The answer varies from nation to nation. But favouring family members remains in vogue — everywhere. Outgoing United States President Joe Biden has pardoned his son Hunter, convicted of serious offences and President-elect Donald Trump has announced the appointment of his daughter’s father-in-law as ambassador to France.

Last year’s elections saw the defeat of prominent political families who have ruled Sri Lanka since its independence. No more of Bandanaikes, Premdasas, Jayawardene and Rajapaksas. In Nepal, the Koirala family is no longer as powerful. Some other families remain in Nepal’s political life, but power is wielded by Marxists and Maoists.

Pakistan has witnessed two rival families, the Sharifs and the Bhutto-Zardaris, uniting to keep out Imran Khan who once said that he had no intention of perpetuating his family in power. Asif Ali Zardari is the President in the power-sharing arrangement while Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam is the chief minister of the most powerful Punjab province. The quasi-feudal society has numerous families wielding power.

Political dynasties are a prevalent form of transmission of political power in many democracies. Does dynastic rule impede development in a country? Much has been studied and written, for and against, on this in many countries. Much of it is political polemics, but a representative example of its impact on society is a 2016 study in Pakistan by academic Ayesha Ali.

The question was whether political dynasties hindered development. She examined the incentives of dynastic politicians to engage in local development in the aftermath of natural disasters. Using the large-scale floods that affected Pakistan in 2010, she studied data from the National Assembly elections, and on spending on development programs by elected politicians in their constituencies from 2008 to 2013. The results show that development expenditures are 10.9 per cent lower in flood-hit areas with dynastic politicians as compared to areas without floods and dynastic politicians. She says that this is suggestive of lower effort by dynastic politicians in a weak democratic system with entrenched political power.

In India, several families go in and out of power at the national and state levels. The Badals, the Abdullahs, the Chautalas, the Yadavs across UP and Bihar, the Karunanidhi family in Tamil Nadu, the Deve Gowda family in Karnataka and the Pawars, the Chavans, the Shindes and others in Maharashtra. It is an endless list.

The Nehru-Gandhi family has ruled for many years and the Bharatiya Janata Party selectively targets it for seeking to perpetuate vanshvaad. However, the ruling party has numerous leaders who followed their peers in political and public life.

The Nehru-Gandhis can be said to have consolidated their political presence with Priyanka just elected to the Lok Sabha. Now, just every Nehru-Gandhi, from Jawaharlal onwards has been a parliamentarian. That includes the late Sanjay Gandhi, his wife Maneka and his son Varun. However, the BJP has no problem with this branch of the family.

Is the wielding of power by families against democracy? Views differ. Many of the Western democracies that propagate, even dictate, their ideas of democratic rule for others to follow are either headed by hereditary royals or have dominant families. The relative difference is thanks, not to the choice of candidates, but to multi-party systems and regular elections.

Yet, four US political families — Adams, Harrison, Roosevelt and Bush — have each had two members who served as President of the United States. Like the Kennedys, there have been some 700 families in which two or more members have served in Congress, and they account for 1,700 of the 10,000 men and women who have been elected to the federal legislature since 1774.

If there are explanations for why certain families gravitate to political life, it is less clear why the voters choose members of the same families to represent them generation after generation. This is one type of voting behaviour that cannot be blamed on television. America’s political dynasties go back to the colonial period.

By a rough estimate, there are 43 sovereign states with a monarch as head of state, of which 41 are ruled by dynasties across the world. There are currently 26 sovereign dynasties. Prominent political families include Kim of North Korea, Lebanon’s Arslan family, the Hayotamas, called the ‘Kennedys’ of Japan, the Acquinos of the Philippines and the Soekarnos of Indonesia. In Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi has struggled to keep power despite being elected.

Political dynasties have long been present in democracies, raising concerns that inequality in the distribution of political power may reflect imperfections in democratic representation. This is the reality.

The larger reality is that it is a basic instinct for a parent or peer to encourage or inject younger family members into whatever trade or profession he/she is. Outside of politics, do we not see leaders of trade and industry, of which the cinema is a big example, launching their progenies? Nor is it remarkable that so many politicians marry the children of politicians. They move in the same social circles. Why, even spiritual power passing is hereditary.

The genetics of politics are strengthened by the tradition that widows of members are often appointed or elected to fill their husbands’ unexpired terms. The public sympathy factor rules succession.

Public life encourages cronyism and rule by oligarchy and the unstated law even in democratic organisations is that the leadership, once elected, would entrench itself in power, undermining the democratic principle of a level playing field.

No law bars it. It is not debated on television because there is mutual silence — teri bhi chup, meri bhi chup. It is universal and perhaps, not surprising that so many children of politicians go into politics. After all, it’s “daddy’s business”. Many doctors’ children go to medical school and so are lawyers, architects and the like passing on their practice. Ditto, the path to Parliament. So why complain?

AIIMS Covid-19

Two Suspected Cases Of HMPV Fetected In Nagpur

In Nagpur, two suspected HMPV patients have been identified. These patients are 13 and 7 years old, respectively. Shashikant Shambharkar, Deputy Director of Health, said that the records of both of these suspected patients are being sent to AIIMS Nagpur for examination.

According to Shashikant Shambharkar, Deputy Director of Health,” two suspected HMPV patients have been found in Nagpur. One of these patients is 7 years old and the other is 13 years old.”

Shambharkar further added, “The reports of both these patients have come back positive in a private hospital. Both these patients have been treated and discharged. The reports of both these suspected patients are being sent to AIIMS Nagpur for examination.”

In the wider context, India has already detected three cases of HMPV. Two of the cases were identified in Bengaluru, Karnataka, and another case was recorded in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) confirmed two cases of HMPV in Karnataka’s Bengaluru, and another case was reported in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad. These cases were detected as part of ongoing surveillance efforts to monitor respiratory illnesses across the country.

After three cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) were reported in India, Union Health Minister JP Nadda reassured the public on Monday, saying that there is no cause for alarm. He emphasised that the virus, first identified in 2001, poses no new threat.

Nadda reassured the public that health systems and surveillance networks are vigilant and ready to respond promptly to any health challenges.

In a video statement, the health minister said that there is no reason to worry and that the government is closely monitoring the situation.

“Health experts have clarified that HMPV is not a new virus. It was first identified in 2001… HMPV spreads through the air and can affect people of all age groups. The virus spreads more during the winter and early spring months,” Nadda said.

He also mentioned that the government is closely monitoring the situation, with the ICMR and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) keeping track of developments and ensuring the country’s preparedness to handle any emerging health challenges.

“The World Health Organisation (WHO) has taken cognisance of the situation and will share its report with us shortly. The country data for respiratory viruses available with ICMR and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program has also been reviewed, and no surge in any common respiratory viral pathogens has been observed in India. A joint monitoring group meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Director General for Health Services on January 4 to review the situation,” Nadda said.

“The health systems and surveillance networks of the country remain vigilant, ensuring the country is ready to respond promptly to any emerging health challenges. There is no reason to worry. We are closely monitoring the situation,” he added.

HMPV is a virus that has been associated with respiratory illnesses. However, there has been no unusual surge in cases in India. (ANI)

North Korea Confirms Testing Of Hypersonic Missile Under Kim Jong-un’s Supervision

North Korea announced on Tuesday that it had successfully test-fired a new intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) equipped with a hypersonic warhead, Yonhap News Agency reported, citing state media.

According to North Korea’s state media Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the missile travelled approximately 1,500 kilometres at a speed 12 times faster than sound during a test conducted the previous day under the supervision of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un via a monitoring system.

Kim stated that the development of the missile was intended to enhance North Korea’s nuclear deterrence by “making the weapon system to which no one can respond to the linchpin of strategic deterrence.”

“The hypersonic missile system will reliably contain any rivals in the Pacific region that can affect the security of our state. The system can deal a serious military strike to a rival while effectively breaking any dense defensive barrier,” Kim said, according to KCNA

The KCNA reported that the hypersonic glide vehicle atop the IRBM reached its first peak at an altitude of 99.8 kilometres and a second at 42.5 kilometres, successfully completing a 1,500-kilometre flight path and striking its designated target in the sea.

This missile test, North Korea’s first provocation in roughly two months, occurred less than two weeks before US President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20.

However, the South Korean military dismissed the North’s claim as a “deception,” saying there was no second peak.

“The flight range analysed by South Korea, the US and Japan was around 1,100 kilometre and (the missile) did not reach a second peak,” JCS spokesperson Col. Lee Sung-un told a regular press briefing, noting the North has a track record of “exaggerating,” Yonhap reported.

“North Korea probably intended to flex its muscle against the United States. As it said the latest launch was a test-firing, the weapons system does not appear to be completed, pointing to demand (to further develop) in terms of military technology,” an official at South Korea’s unification ministry told reporters.

Notably, North Korea fired a hypersonic missile into the East Sea on Monday. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported detecting the launch of a suspected intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) from the Pyongyang area around noon yesterday.

The missile travelled approximately 1,100 kilometres before landing in the sea, Yonhap reported.

Although the missile’s flight range was below the typical 3,000 to 5,500 kilometres covered by IRBMs, a JCS official had noted that it appeared to share features with North Korea’s intermediate-range hypersonic missiles tested in January and April last year. (ANI)

Allu Arjun Visits Hospital To Meet Injured Child Following Sandhya Theatre Incident

Actor Allu Arjun visited KIMS Hospital in Begumpet, Hyderabad, to meet Sri Teja, the child who was seriously injured during the tragic incident at Sandhya Theatre.

The incident, which occurred on December 4, 2024, during the premiere of ‘Pushpa 2: The Rule’, resulted in the death of a woman named Revathi and left her child, Sri Teja, in critical condition.

The visit comes amidst Allu Arjun’s ongoing legal proceedings related to the chaos that unfolded when the actor waved to the crowd from the sunroof of his car, during the ‘Pushpa 2’ premiere.

Allu Arjun expressed his concern for the injured child, who had been on a ventilator for several weeks following the incident.

As of December 24, 2024, there had been positive signs of recovery, with Sri Teja reportedly responding for the first time after being unresponsive for 20 days.

His father, Bhaskar, expressed gratitude for Allu Arjun’s support, saying, “The child responded after 20 days. He is responding today. Allu Arjun and the Telangana government are supporting us.”

In addition to his visit to Sri Teja, Allu Arjun has been fulfilling his legal obligations.

On January 5, 2025, Allu Arjun complied with the conditions set by the Nampally Court by visiting the Chikkadpally Police Station as part of the bail process.

The actor had been granted regular bail following the incident, but the court imposed certain conditions, including attendance at the police station.

This visit was a necessary part of the ongoing legal process stemming from the tragic events at Sandhya Theatre.

Earlier, on January 4, Allu Arjun appeared before the Metropolitan Criminal Court at Nampally, where he submitted the required sureties and executed a bond of Rs 50,000.

His arrival was met with heightened security, as police personnel escorted him through a crowd of media representatives.

After the court’s decision, his lawyer, Ashok Reddy, addressed the press and confirmed that the actor had been granted bail on the grounds that the incident was not deemed “culpable homicide not amounting to murder.”

Reddy further clarified, “The conditions have been imposed that he (Allu Arjun) has to attend the police station. Bail has been granted… The court was convinced that this was not a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Therefore, the court granted bail.”

He also mentioned that a quash petition is pending before the Telangana High Court, with the next hearing scheduled for January 21, 2025.

The tragic sequence of events began when a large crowd gathered outside Sandhya Theatre to catch a glimpse of the star during the ‘Pushpa 2’ premiere.

As Allu Arjun waved to fans from his car’s sunroof, the situation quickly spiralled out of control. During the chaos, Revathi tragically lost her life, and her son, Sri Teja, sustained serious injuries, leading to his hospitalization.

To support the victim, Allu Arjun also extended financial assistance to the bereaved family.

His father, film producer Allu Aravind, announced a contribution of Rs 2 crore to help the family of Revathi, who tragically passed away in the incident. (ANI)
