SC Grants Interim Protection To Allahabadia, Criticizes Remarks

The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted interim protection to Allahabadia from arrest in connection with the multiple FIRs lodged against him across India over his recent inappropriate comments during his guest appearance on a show ‘India’s Got Latent’. The Apex court granted interim protection to him subject to his cooperating fully with the probe.

The Supreme Court said no further FIR shall be registered against him on the basis of the episode aired on show India’s Got Latent. Supreme Court asked him to deposit his passport with police and he can’t leave country without permission of the court.

Earlier the Court expressed displeasure on the remarks of YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahabadia during his guest appearance on a show India’s Got Latent. The apex court asked the lawyer representing Allahabadia about the parameters of obscenity and vulgarity.

The Supreme Court was hearing the social media influence Ranveer Allahbadia’s plea against multiple FIRs. He had sought seeking consolidation of multiple FIRs filed against him in connection with his remarks on “India’s got Latent’

The Maharashtra Police’s cyber cell has asked Ranveer Allahbadia to join the investigation on February 24. The cyber cell is investigating Allahbadia and others after he triggered an uproar with his offensive remarks on the show ‘India’s Got Latent.’

Earlier, the Mumbai and Guwahati Police had said in a joint statement the Youtuber and podcaster Allahbadia was “continuously out of contact with the investigative agencies”.

He has been named in FIRs filed by Maharashtra Cyber Department, Guwahati Police, and Jaipur Police in the ‘India’s Got Latent’ case, the police said.

The Supreme Court in its hearing today said that such behaviour has to be condemned.

“Just because somebody thinks he becomes so popular and can speak any kind of words, can take entire society for granted? Is there anyone on earth who will like this language? There is something very dirty in his mind which has been vomited,” the apex court said. (ANI)

Delhi LG Chairs High Level Meet Regarding Summer Action Plan

The meeting, held at the LG Secretariat discussed the Summer Action Plan to be made for the people of Delhi so they do not face any water problems with the incoming increasing heat.

Elon Musk’s Tesla Kicks Off Hiring In India

Elon Musk owned Electric car maker Tesla Inc. has officially begun its hiring process in India, marking a significant step towards its long-anticipated entry into the domestic market.

On Monday, the electric vehicle (EV) giant posted a job listing on LinkedIn for the position of Consumer Engagement Manager in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The role is a full-time, on-site position, indicating Tesla’s commitment to building a direct presence in the country.

https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/4155877322

Tesla’s latest hiring activity aligns with its broader strategy to expand in India. The company has recently posted a total of 13 job openings, covering both customer-facing and operational roles.

This development follows a crucial meeting between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 14 in Washington DC.

The discussions between the two centered on strengthening India-US collaboration in innovation, space exploration, artificial intelligence, and sustainable development. The two also explored emerging technologies, entrepreneurship, and governance–areas that align with Tesla’s vision for India.

Tesla, a global leader in electric mobility and renewable energy, has had a limited presence in India but has been considering an expansion for years.

With the latest job postings, the company is taking concrete steps to establish itself in the world’s third-largest automobile market.

Industry experts believe Tesla’s hiring push could be a precursor to the company setting up sales and service operations, and eventually manufacturing in India.

The move aligns with the Indian government’s push for electric vehicle adoption and local manufacturing, supported by incentives under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.

While Tesla has not provided an official timeline for its India launch, its active hiring suggests that preparations are in full swing.

In December, Musk revealed that Starlink’s satellite internet services were non-operational in India following the confiscation of two of the company’s devices by authorities–one from an area affected by armed conflict and the other from a region linked to drug smuggling.

Additionally, Musk has been advocating for a reduction in tariffs on Tesla’s electric vehicles. He expressed willingness to export Tesla’s affordable EV models to India, contingent on the country lowering its import duties. (ANI)

Trump Unveils US Trade Policy With Reciprocal Tariffs

US President Donald Trump outlined a new trade policy focused on fairness and reciprocity and said that the US would implement reciprocal tariffs, charging other countries the same tariffs they impose on American goods.

Trump emphasised that this approach would address unfair trade practices, including non-monetary barriers, subsidies, and VAT systems, while encouraging foreign countries to either reduce or eliminate tariffs against the US.

Sharing a post on X on Monday (local time), Trump said, “On trade, I have decided, for purposes of fairness, that I will charge a reciprocal tariff, meaning, whatever countries charge the United States of America, we will charge them – No more, no less!”

The post added, “For purposes of this United States Policy, we will consider countries that use the VAT System, which is far more punitive than a tariff, to be similar to that of a tariff. Sending merchandise, product, or anything by any other name through another country, for purposes of unfairly harming America, will not be accepted. In addition, we will make provision for subsidies provided by countries in order to take economic advantage of the United States.”

Trump further said that provisions will also be made for Nonmonetary Tariffs and Trade Barriers.

The post said, “Likewise, provisions will be made for Nonmonetary Tariffs and Trade Barriers that some countries charge in order to keep our product out of their domain or, if they do not even let US businesses operate. We are able to accurately determine the cost of these Nonmonetary Trade Barriers. It is fair to all, no other country can complain and, in some cases, if a country feels that the United States would be getting too high a Tariff, all they have to do is reduce or terminate their Tariff against us. There are no tariffs if you manufacture or build your product in the United States.”

It added, “For many years, the US has been treated unfairly by other countries, both friend and foe. This system will immediately bring fairness and prosperity back into the previously complex and unfair System of Trade. America has helped many Countries throughout the years, at great financial cost. It is now time that these Countries remember this, and treat us fairly – a level playing field for American workers. I have instructed my Secretary of State, Secretary of Commerce, Secretary of the Treasury, and United States Trade Representative (USTR) to do all work necessary to deliver reciprocity to our system of trade.” (ANI)

CEC Appointment: Congress Slams BJP For ‘Destroying Electoral Process’

Congress MP KC Venugopal strongly criticized the appointment of the new Central Election Commissioner and said that the decision went against the spirit of the Constitution.

Taking to social media, X, the Congress MP wrote that such egregious behaviour only confirmed the doubts that the ruling regime was “destroying” the electoral process of the country.

“In a hasty midnight move, the Government has notified the appointment of the new Central Election Commissioner. This goes against the spirit of our Constitution, and what has been reiterated by the Supreme Court in many cases – for the electoral process to have sanctity, the CEC must be an impartial stakeholder,” the post read.

“Their decision to hastily hold the meeting today and appoint the new EC shows they are keen to circumvent the Supreme Court’s scrutiny and get the appointment done before a clear order kicks in.

“Such egregious behaviour only confirms the doubts that many have expressed about how the ruling regime is destroying the electoral process and bending the rules for its benefit. Be it fake voter lists, schedules favouring the BJP, or concerns around EVM hacking–the government and the CECs it appoints are subject to deep suspicion because of such incidents,” the post further read.

He further stated that as pointed by the LoP, the decision should have been kept aside until the Supreme Court decided the issue in line with the Constitution.

“As the LOP rightly pointed out, this decision should have been kept aside until the Supreme Court decides the issue in line with the Constitution,” the post further read.

This comes after the Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was appointed as the new CEC.

A notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice said that President Droupadi Murmu is pleased to appoint Gyanesh Kumar, Election Commissioner, as Chief Election Commissioner in the Election Commission of India, with effect from February 19, 2025.

Further, it said that the police had apprehended the accused and appealed to “Nepali students who have or plan to leave the campus to return and resume the classes.”

“There was an unfortunate incident which took place late in the evening yesterday on the KIIT campus. Immediately after the incident, police investigated the matter and apprehended the culprit.

“The KIIT administration has taken all-out efforts to restore normalcy in the campus and hostels to resume academic activities,” the University said in a statement today.

Prior to this, KIIT had issued a notice which reportedly said that the Odisha college was “closed sine die for all international students from Nepal” and there were directed to vacate the university campus.

“There was an allegation that this girl who belonged to Nepal was harassed by one student of KIIT University in third-year Mechanical engineering. We investigated the matter, and we got prima facie evidence that there was some sort of harassment which could have prompted the girl to commit suicide, so we arrested the accused person; we examined him, and today, he has been forwarded to judicial custody,” the Cuttack Police Commissioner said.

“Yesterday, there was a sentimental, emotional outburst so both students belonging to Nepal, as well as India, joined together in protest against the university authorities, demanding justice. We deployed a police force at KIIT University…they were convinced by morning and now the situation is peaceful.,” he said.

The Police Commissioner said that some personal belongings of the deceased girl have been seized by the police and they will sent to the forensic science laboratory for analysis to gather further evidence in this case…”

Students from Nepal were seen leaving their hostels following this announcement.

Students stated that they were visibly distressed and anxious as they don’t have necessary tickets to return home. Some even claimed that they were preparing for examinations which are set to start from the last week of February.

Rajan Gupta, a student from Nepal claimed that they were forced to vacate the hostel without clear information.

“We were protesting for the (deceased) girl. We don’t know what their intentions are, but we were forcibly made to vacate the hostel. There is no fixed train schedule, and I have no money. We haven’t even had food. We are helpless,” he said.

Gupta also said that college staff had entered the hostel, urging students to leave and even. “The staff members entered the hostel, made us vacate…, ” he said.

Anil Prasad Yadav, another student from Nepal, described the events leading up to their departure.

“A girl from Nepal was found dead yesterday (February 16). We went to the International Office to find out more details about this but we could not find anything. We were there overnight, sitting on a dharna. We were sent back to the hostel from there. We were finally told to pack up and leave within an hour. We have nothing with us. We don’t know how we will go. We have not even had food…We are trying to get a ticket,” Yadav said. (ANI)
