Putin: Russia-US Talks Inspire Hope On Restoring Ties

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Russia and the US are ready to step up cooperation.

Addressing the annual meeting of the Federal Security Service Board, Putin said that initial contacts with the Donald Trump administration have given rise to hope that issues like the Ukraine conflict can be resolved.

The Russian president also said that Russia and the US wanted to establish cooperation but that some Western elites were seeking to undermine their dialogue. He emphasized that “accumulated systemic and strategic problems in the global architecture” had provoked the Ukrainian and other regional crises at the time.

“We all see how rapidly the world is changing, the situation in the world. In this regard, I would like to note that the first contacts with the new US administration inspire certain hopes,” the Russian President was cited as saying by TASS.

“We understand that not everyone welcomes the resumption of Russian-US contacts. Certain Western elites remain committed to maintaining global instability,” Putin stated. He added that all available diplomatic and intelligence resources should be used to foil forces attempting to “derail or discredit the emerging dialogue” between Moscow and Washington.

Further, in his address to the FSB Board Meeting today, Putin said that Russia has never refused to resolve the Ukraine conflict by peaceful means.

Earlier today, diplomats from Russia and the United States held talks in Istanbul in Ankara. Delegations from both countries concluded more than six hours of talks, which were aimed at resolving disputes over the work of their embassies, Russian state news agency TASS said. The talks, it said, were held at the Istanbul residence of the US consul general.

The state news agency cited Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as saying that the negotiators at the closed-door format meeting were “high-level diplomats and experts.” Prior to today’s meeting, there were two preliminary “technical contacts between Moscow and Washington” on the issue.

Bilateral ties between Russia and the US had been strained under the Joe Biden administration, with US authorities shutting Russian visa centre offices in Washington and New York in June 2024.

Between February and March 2022, the United States declared 14 Russian diplomats, including members of Russia’s permanent mission to the United Nations, “personae non gratae.”

In retaliation, the Russian Foreign Ministry provided the US with a list of American diplomats to be expelled. In October 2023, Washington ordered two more Russian diplomats to leave the country, following Moscow’s expulsion of the first and second secretaries of the US Embassy.

Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump spoke over the phone on February 12, 23 days after Trump’s inauguration. According to Russian media, the discussion included the Ukrainian conflict, bilateral relations, and the exchange of citizens.

On February 18, high-level Russian and US delegations met in Riyadh, after which Lavrov said that both sides had reached an agreement on the speedy appointment of the Russian ambassador to the US and the US ambassador to Russia.

The US was represented by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, national security adviser Mike Waltz, and special envoy for the Middle East Steven Witkoff.

On Wednesday, the Kremlin spokesperson said that there is a mutual understanding that a personal meeting between the Russian and US presidents should take place, but no concrete date has been set.

Meawhile, Donald Trump said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be visiting Washington on Friday, during which Trump has said a US-Ukraine agreement on rare earth metals will be signed. (ANI)

Earlier on February 20, the Congress in Haryana had expelled seven party leaders from across the state for indulging in “anti-party activities” in the upcoming 2025 municipal corporation elections.

The seven leaders were suspended for six years in consultation with the state in-charge BK Hariprasad.

“We have demanded that elections be conducted using ballot papers instead of EVMs like in Uttarakhand… In every state election, EVMs are being questioned and cases have been registered due to doubts on its authenticity, so ballot papers should be used as permitted under the law,” he said

Gene Hackman,Betsy Arakawa Found Dead At Their Residence

Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy Arakawa and their dog were all found dead at their New Mexico home, authorities have confirmed.

The office of Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed their deaths to Variety. There is no immediate indication of foul play, per authorities, though the Sheriff’s office did not immediately provide a cause of death.

“All I can say is that we’re in the middle of a preliminary death investigation, waiting on approval of a search warrant,” the sheriff told the Santa Fe New Mexican. The statement came before authorities had positively identified the pair, per the publication. “I want to assure the community and neighborhood that there’s no immediate danger to anyone.”

One of the industry’s most honoured performers, Hackman, 95, was a five-time Oscar nominee who starred in dozens of films. He received two Oscar wins, for ‘The French Connection’ and ‘Unforgiven’. He had also won two BAFTA Awards and four Golden Globes.

Hackman always had a surprise hit up his sleeve, as in films like “The French Connection II,” “The Firm” and even “The Poseidon Adventure.”

Hackman delivered an impressive array of performances that have only grown in stature over time. His Harry Caul in Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Conversation” is every bit as strong and well delineated now, as when the film debuted in 1974. The same is true of his stoic promoter in the Michael Ritchie ski film “Downhill Racer.”

In 1990, around the time he and Arakawa made Santa Fe their home, Hackman underwent angioplasty due to congestive heart failure. He continued to work as a screen actor for 14 years, as per Variety.

Hackman also penned three novels with undersea archaeologist Daniel Lenihan: “Wake of the Perdido Star” (1999), “Justice for None” (2004) and “Escape From Andersonville” (2008). His 2011 work, “Payback at Morning Peak,” was a solo effort.

He was married twice and had three children. His first marriage to Faye Maltese lasted 30 years from 1956 to 86. Hackman married Arakawa in 1991. Arakawa was a classical pianist. (ANI)

So that such incidents are not repeated I give the responsibility to my brothers. You protect our sisters. Today men and women are practising together and they are at the grassroot level.

BJP Manipulating Voter List With Blessing Of EC: Mamata

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was manipulating the voters’ list with the blessing of the Election Commissioner.

She formed a committee on Thursday to check the irregularities in the voters’ list in every district of West Bengal.

She alleged that the BJP added fake voters in the voters’ list to manipulate elections in Maharashtra and Delhi and they were trying the same trick in West Bengal.

CM Mamata Banerjee said, “Sitting in the Election Commissioner’s office, they have created a fake voter’s list online, and in every district of West Bengal, fake voters have been added. Using this trick, they have won elections in Delhi and Maharashtra. The opposition in Maharashtra could not find out these facts. Most of the fake voters are from Haryana and Gujarat. BJP is manipulating voters list with the blessing of EC, Bengal’s culture gave rise to independence.”

She further appealed to the people of Bengal to check the voter list.

“Any day in the name of NRC and CAA the actual names can be removed. It has 2 main objectives. One is to defeat TMC and ti remove the names of persons in the list. This is being done with blessings of EC. Keep a watch on data operators. If anyone is at grassroots then it is TMC. iN 2026 Assembly polls we have to hit the ball more hard and this would start from voter’s list. This has to be done at booth level. District president would have to take care of this,” she said.

She further said that an IT Media cell, panchayat councillors, and a core committee will be formed to access the voters list.

“I need information after every 3 days. I am forming a committee, and 4 people would have to be present on a rotation basis. Birbhum would not be included in this assessment. The district president will have to form a booth committee and look into it. I don’t trust the BJP. They can implement One Nation One Election. They do not regard democracy. Only in the name of religion can they do unethical work,” she added. (ANI)

Grave of the Fireflies

My father had been killed, that I knew… My brother was dead. And to die or not die no longer had any significance for me. I only pitied my mama. She had instantly turned from a beauty into an old woman, very embittered by her lot. She couldn’t live without my papa.
“Why are you going to the war?” She asked.
“To avenge papa.”
“Papa wouldn’t stand seeing you with a rifle.”
My papa used to do my braids when I was little. Tied the ribbons. He liked beautiful clothes more than mama did….
The Unwomanly Face of War, Svetlana Alexievich

Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2015, Svetlana Alexievich has lived most of her life in Soviet Union, and Belarus now the neighbour of Ukraine, run by a ruthless dictator, a buddy of Vladimir Putin. This book is her tribute to the thousands of young girls, some still in school, daughters beloveds, mothers and sisters, who fought the Nazis in the front and at the barricades, many of them dead, many of them survivors and alive, their minds, bodies and souls, scarred, ravaged by the apocalyptic war.

Alexievich grew up surrounded by the tragic bravery of these women. And their memories, stated, unstated, suppressed, crushed.

Many women could never be able to love thereafter. Many never found love, because male machismo just could not reconcile with such incredible courage in women. Many suspected the purity of their character, once they returned from the battlefield, wounded in body and spirit. Indeed, some men can never change their spots.

The writer spent years creating an original non-fiction genre, documenting painstakingly the invisible stories of these remarkable Soviet women tank drivers, snipers, pilots, captains, soldiers, nurses, doctors. Many of them just could not speak. Their lips were sealed. Others found the anti-catharsis of an avalanche of angst, after pouring it all out, even relief and optimism. A certain lightness of the soul. Perhaps.

Among these women were amazingly brave young girls and women from all over Soviet Russia, including Ukraine. Their shared memories and nightmares remain etched in their consciousness. War separates, but also unites. This solidarity, amid daily death and dying, and the bestiality of men, could never be forgotten.

Six million Jews were murdered in the Nazi labour and concentration camps in the heart of Europe. More than 20 million Russians died to protect their motherland, and to liberate Berlin. The Nazis were not defeated by the Western allies. They were finally defeated by the Red Army of the Soviet Union, despite the endless siege of Leningrad and Stalingrad and  how can we forget the infinite resilience and sacrifices of the people of Soviet Russia, which included Ukraine?

Were they not the same people with intense bonds of passion shared for their country? Did they not read Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Alexander Pushkin, Anton Chekov, Nicolai Gogol? Were they not deeply moved by Maxim Gorky’s epic Mother? Did they not get transfixed by the exquisite movements of the Ballet, its sublime music crafted by great composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky of the Romantic era?

Can anyone ever forget the Swan Lake, after being totally captivated by its intense beauty in the darkness? Or, The Sleeping Beauty? Did they not watch, or aspire to watch, the magical opera at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, steeped in history, with its neo-classical columns? I have seen it in Moscow it was hypnotic.

Now, will Ukraine ban Tchaikovsky, as angry nationalism and anti-Russia hate overtakes the nation? Will they burn Tolstoy’s War and Peace? Will they disown Mother and Crime and Punishment?

Now, in this endless, meaningless, botched-up war, the children of the great fighters against fascism, have no choice but to kill each other. In tens of thousands no one knows the count of the dead in Russia and Ukraine. Russia had to hire mercenaries and recruit criminals from prisons, because so many of their young had died in this so-called ‘military operation’, while many others have chosen exile, escaping the brutality of this mindless war machine.

Putin seems unaffected, his face motionless, as if on steroids. Now, first time in the history of the post-war, Cold War world, America has aligned with Russia, even at the UN, something unprecedented. Donald Trump has called Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, a Western ally, a “dictator”. Now he wants the rich mineral resources of Ukraine, in lieu for all the arms pumped in by Joe Biden, in the same manner that he wants to convert a ravaged Gaza into a real estate Riviera, a kind of Trumpesque/Kafkasque La La Land  after forcibly evacuating 2 million Palestinians from their homeland.

In any case, Ukraine, a big producer of wheat and known as the ‘bread basket’ of Europe, has been integrated into the multinational agribusiness of corporates like Monsanto. Now, Trump might want the wheat too.

Besides, Trump has polarized Europe, again, for the first time. He seems to have dumped Western Europe for the time being to align with Putin, thereby pushing Ukraine and the EU to the brink. European powers, like Germany and France, are already calling for a big rise in defense budgets, knowing the fickle character of Trump.

In any case, Putin went to war because Ukraine was being roped into NATO, hence drastically disturbing the geo-political scenario in the region, and directly endangering the security of Russia. Surely, he could have chosen diplomacy and hard dialogue, instead of manslaughter on both sides of the border. Besides, it remains a mystery as to why Trump is so besotted by Putin, finds no trace of a dictator in him, even while miscellaneous conspiracy theories float in the grapevine.

ALSO READ: Putin Has Blood On His Face

In the end, even as Neo-Nazis and the extreme Right seem to be gaining ground in many parts of Europe, and one of them with his Heil Hitler salute is now the closest advisor to Trump in the US, there is bound to be a paradigm shift in the days to come. While war is always used by the West to boost a sinking economy, how far the arms industry will call the shots in the Trump era, will remain to be discovered.

However, let us not forget the tens of thousands butchered in Gaza, including young women, mothers and kids, in what seems to a deliberate strategy to stop a new generation to take birth in Palestine. Sounds like the Holocaust and Nazi genetics, is it?

Will the drumbeats of war ever end? Will the simmering pain ever become a faint memory? Will the vast ocean of loss and suffering inflicted by war ever be over in this world which claims to be civilised and modern?

I listen to Joan Baez, yet again. Because this song, too, will never die.

Where have all the young men gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the young men gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the young men gone?
They are all in uniform
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Gone to graveyards every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Gone with flowers every one
When will they ever learn?
