Trump Orders Treasury To Halt Penny Production To Cut Waste

United States President Donald Trump has announced that Washington DC will stop minting pennies, citing their high production cost, which exceeds their face value and termed the practice “wasteful.”

President Trump said Sunday that he has instructed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to “stop producing new pennies.”

Trump made his announcement on a Truth Social post after attending the first half of the Super Bowl.

In his post on ‘Truth Social’, Trump wrote, “For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents. This is so wasteful!.”

“I have instructed my Secretary of the US Treasury to stop producing new pennies. Let’s rip the waste out of our great nation’s budget, even if it’s a penny at a time,” he said.

On January 22, a post from the official Elon Musk led Department of Governmental Efficiency (DOGE) on social media platform X said, “the penny costs over 3 cents to make and cost US taxpayers over $179 million in FY2023. The Mint produced over 4.5 billion pennies in FY2023, around 40% of the 11.4 billion coins for circulation produced.”

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, Trump announced that new tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports into the country would be revealed on Monday.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to the NFL Super Bowl on Sunday Trump said that the tariffs from Monday will impose a 25 per cent charge on all steel imports entering the United States, as well as a 25 per cent tariff on aluminium imports.

In his statement, Trump addressed the rationale for these tariffs, saying, “Very simply, if you charge us, we charge them.”

“On steel and aluminium tariffs, I’m also going to be announcing steel tariffs on Monday. Any steel coming into the United States is going to have a 25 per cent tariff. Aluminum, too… Twenty-five per cent.”

Previously, Trump had threatened to slap a 10 per cent or 20 per cent universal tariff and asked his administration to review that possibility as part of a broader trade review due by April 1.

Trump, who announced that the tariffs would be applicable to every nation, added that the announcement would likely be made on “Monday or Tuesday,” Politico reported. (ANI)

Sonia: 14 Cr People Deprived Of NFSA Benefits

Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Monday said that the delay in the census has deprived 14 crore Indians of their rightful benefits under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), adding that food security is not a privilege but a fundamental right.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Sonia Gandhi highlighted the four-year delay in conducting the census and expressed concerns that it is unlikely to be conducted this year as well.

“The National Food Security Act (NFSA) introduced by the UPA government in September 2013 was a landmark initiative aimed at ensuring food and nutritional security to the country’s 140 crore population. This legislation plays a crucial role in protecting millions of vulnerable households, particularly during the Covid 19 crisis. It is this act that provides the basis for the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana,” the CPP Chairperson said.

She said that under the NFSA, 75 per cent of the rural population and 50 per cent of the urban population are entitled to subsidized food grains, but the beneficiary quota is still determined based on the outdated 2011 Census.

“For the first time in independent history, the decennial census has been delayed by more than four years. Originally scheduled for 2021, there is still no clarity as to when the census will be conducted. The Budget allocations reveal that the updated census is unlikely to be conducted this year as well. Around 14 crore eligible Indians are thus being deprived of their rightful benefit under the NFSA,” she added.

She urged the Centre to prioritise the completion of the census to ensure that deserving individuals receive their rightful benefits.

“It is imperative that the government prioritises the completion of the census as soon as possible and ensures that all the deserving individuals receive the benefits guaranteed to them under the NFSA. Food security is not a privilege it’s a fundamental right,” she said.

The Budget Session of Parliament began on January 31, with President Droupadi Murmu delivering the inaugural address.

The first part of the session will continue till February 13. The second part will reconvene on March 10 and conclude on April 4. (ANI)

Manish Tewari Moves Motion In Lok Sabha Over Treatment of Deported Indians

Congress MP Manish Tewari on Monday submitted an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha to discuss the treatment of Indian citizens deported from the United States and the Government of India’s response on the matter.

In his motion to the Lok Sabha Secretary-General, Tewari urged that the House suspend Zero Hour and the relevant rules pertaining to Question Hour and other scheduled business to deliberate on the deportation process and the conditions faced by Indian nationals.

The Congress MP claimed that, according to US estimates, approximately 7.25 lakh undocumented Indians reside in the United States, with 24,000 currently held in detention facilities.

“Of these, 487 individuals have been served final deportation orders, and 298 have been positively identified as Indian nationals,” he stated.

Tewari expressed concern over their deportation process and the conditions they face while being repatriated.

“Reports and visuals indicating that Indian deportees have been subjected to restrictive measures, including handcuffs, have caused deep distress and warrant careful examination. These individuals, who sought better opportunities abroad, deserve to be treated with dignity and in accordance with established human rights principles,” he claimed.

Citing the seriousness of the issue, he emphasized the need for the Union government to clarify whether due process under U.S. law was adhered to in these deportations and what diplomatic measures are being taken to ensure the rights and dignity of Indian citizens.

He further urged the central government to inform the House about the steps it has undertaken or intends to take to prevent any recurrence of such concerns.

“In light of these developments, I urge the Government to apprise the House of the steps it has undertaken or intends to undertake to prevent any recurrence of such concerns. This matter holds national significance as it pertains to the well-being and fair treatment of Indian citizens abroad,” he said.

“I seek the permission of the Chair to raise this matter,” Tewari added.

Notably, a US Air Force plane carrying Indian citizens who “illegally immigrated” to the U.S. arrived in Punjab’s Amritsar on Wednesday. A total of 104 Indian nationals were on board the aircraft that landed in Amritsar.

Following the event, opposition parties criticized the government inside and outside Parliament, alleging that the deported Indians had been brought back in an “inhuman manner” in a U.S. military plane and were “ill-treated and handcuffed.” (ANI)

Kejriwal to Visit Ram Mandir

Arvind Kejriwal To Meet Punjab AAP Leaders On Tuesday

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener, Arvind Kejriwal, is likely to hold a meeting with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, state ministers and MLAs in Delhi on February 11.

According to the sources, the meeting will discuss the Delhi election results and preparations for the upcoming Punjab elections in 2027.

This came after the AAP suffered a massive setback, securing only 22 seats–a huge drop from its previous tally of 62 in 2020 polls, while the BJP won a historic mandate on February 8, Saturday, returning to power in the national capital after 27 years by winning 48 seats in the 70-member Delhi assembly.

Earlier on Sunday, Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa claimed that over 30 AAP legislators in Punjab are in touch with the Congress and ready to switch sides.

He also targeted the AAP over Delhi election results and said that the party tasted a humiliating defeat in Delhi.

“With this defeat, a regime of deceitfulness, lies and hollow promises has ended. The AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal once said, “If I am corrupt, people wouldn’t vote for me.” Now he has lost his own seat. Does that mean that the people of Delhi consider him corrupt?” he said.

Bajwa continued his attack and said that the people of Punjab have also seen the real face of the so-called Kattar Imaandar party.

“Kejriwal and Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann made lofty promises in Punjab to befool Punjabis and garner their votes in 2022. The @AAP Punjab has yet to provide Rs 1000 pm to women. It failed to raise Rs 20,000 crore from mining,” he highlighted.

The Congress leader also mentioned that the Punjab government led by CM Bhagwant Mann remained inefficient in taking action against its corrupt ministers and leaders.

“The Mann government will meet the same fate in 2027. Delhi’s results point towards the beginning of AAP’s end,” Partap Singh Bajwa said. (ANI)

BJP Working To Weaken Constitution: Priyanka Gandhi

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government at the Centre, accusing it of “weakening” the Constitution and democracy.

The Wayanad MP was speaking at the United Democratic Front booth-level leadership meeting at Sullamussalam Science College here.

Priyanka Gandhi won the by-polls from Wayanad held in November, after Congress leader and her brother, Rahul Gandhi vacated the seat as he had also won from Rae Bareli in the Lok Sabha elections.

“It is probably the first time in the history of our nation that we have a government which is working to weaken the Constitution and democracy,” Priyanka Gandhi said.

She told UDF workers that they are fighting to save Constitution and the “very essence of India.”

“The fight that we are fighting. The fight that all of you are fighting is not just a fight for our own politics or our own ideas. It is a fight for the Constitution of India, for the essence of India, for everything that makes our nation what it is to do,” she said.

“So you’re not just soldiers and warriors for the UDF. You are soldiers and warriors for the soul of India. It is through you that the people will understand the truth about what is going on in our country. Through you the people will understand we are fighting for their rights for them to be stronger and for our Constitution “she added.

Meanwhile, Priyanka Gandhi told reporters that she will continue to raise the man-animal conflict in her constituency Wayanad.

“I have already raised it once, I will continue to raise it and I think it’s something that we need to look into and it’s a complex issue. It doesn’t have easy solutions, but I will definitely put as much pressure and raise it as much as I can,” she said.

She highlighted that more funding is needed to resolve the man-animal conflict.

“We also need more funding here. During my last trip here I had a meeting with the District Magistrate and all the forest officials and essentially there is difficulty with the funding both from the centre and state,” she said.

“So I will go and request that these issues be resolved because, with more funding, there’s better monitoring, better safety measures, and better protection even for forest guards, watchmen and everything. So we will work on it,” she added. (ANI)

Atishi Resigns As Delhi Chief Minister

Atishi tendered her resignation as Delhi Chief Minister on Sunday, following her party’s loss in the assembly elections.

The Aam Aadmi Party leader submitted her resignation to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena at the Raj Niwas on Sunday.

Atishi, 43, was serving as the Chief Minister of Delhi since September last year. Her elevation to the top post came after Kejriwal announced resignation from his post, days after resigning from the post.

She became the third woman chief minister of Delhi after Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit.

AAP suffered a massive setback in the Delhi assembly elections, as it could secure only 22 seats, a huge drop from its previous tally of 62.

The BJP won a historic mandate in Delhi polls on Saturday, returning to power in the national capital after 27 years by ousting AAP.

Atishi, however, retained the Kalkaji seat after a hard-fought contest and defeated BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri by a margin of 3,521 votes.

Acknowledging her individual victory, Atishi conceded AAP’s defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections and vowed to continue fighting against the BJP.

Atishi’s win in Kalkaji constituency stands out for AAP, especially as several of its top leaders, including former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and ex-Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, lost their constituencies.

BJP’s Parvesh Verma emerged as a giant-killer in the assembly election with a decisive win of over 4,000 votes over former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in New Delhi seat.

The Congress, which was hoping for its revival in the national capital, again failed to win any seat. (ANI)
