‘Was Kumbh Admin Waiting For A Stampede To Set Their House In Order?’

Gyan Prakash Sharma, a Prayagraj resident and a witness to the stampede at Maha Kumbh, says crowd mismanagement and lack of coordination claimed precious lives. His account:

I was resting in my tent, about 200 meters from the spot where the tragedy occurred, when I heard a commotion during the early hours of Amrit Snan day (January 29). I rushed out only to witness a flood of pilgrims rushing in all directions causing an uncontrollable stampede. The crowd was in such frenzy that it was literally impossible for the police and other security personnel to control them.

My question at that hour was how the Mela administration not foresee such a situation ahead of an auspicious day. Clearly, the poor crowd management was the reason behind this unfortunate incident that resulted in the loss of dozens of lives and many injured.

Though the administration has now woken up late and cancelled the VIP passes, my assumption is that the VIP culture was one of the main reasons behind the deaths of the pilgrims. Most of the routes heading towards the Sangam Nose had been restricted for the general public to ensure a smooth Snan for the Akharas and VIPs, on the auspicious day of Mauni Amawasya. Many pilgrims who reached the Nose well in advance to take bath on the Muhurat (2 am onwards) were sleeping under the skies and were among the first victims.

The Pontoon Bridge leading to the nose was also closed well in advance and the increasing pressure from behind forced the pilgrims to jump off and break the barricading. This caused a rush towards the Nose, and in the melee that ensued, many people sleeping there were crushed. As the handful of cops present there literally became helpless, the crowd was at its own mercy for the next couple of hours running in all possible directions for help and safety.

Although, cops and other enforcement teams were rushed from the entire Mela City to the spot, it took them another two-three hours to finally control the stampede. But by then the damage was done, leaving an ugly scar of the much hyped historic Hindu congregation.

I also came to know through some of my friends in the district administration that there was little or no communication between the Mela and the district administration officials. Seeing the inflow of countless numbers of pilgrims from all directions of the Mela city, it was clear that no effort was made by the district administration to stop people outside the Mela. It also appears that the city borders had also been left unchecked and vehicles kept pouring in until each and every possible road leading to the Mela city was choked to the brim.

Such was the rush in Prayagraj ahead of Mauni Amawasya that not just the city roads, but even by-lanes and every corner of the town were chock-a-block with no walking or breathing space. The district witnessed traffic jam for as long as over 50 km from the Sangam. But the administration was probably waiting for a tragedy to take place before waking up.

Now that the religious event is defaced, all your efforts – cancelling VIP passes, enhanced traffic & border management, increased forces, replacing officials, forming a judicial probe team, etc. – are merely face-saving tactics. And now when things are smoothly moving in and around the Mela city, I wonder why the same administration could not place such efforts before the tragedy. If therse measures had been put in place from day one, we could have saved precious lives and Mela reputation.

Step Up Fight Against Terrorism With Goal Of ‘Zero Infiltration’: Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday emphasised on the need to step up fight against terrorism with the goal of “zero infiltration,” while chairing the Jammu and Kashmir security review meet in the national capital.

Noting that sustained and coordinated efforts of the union government resulted in significantly weak terrorism ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir, Shah directed all security agencies to step up the fight against terrorism by aiming for the ‘zero infiltration’ goal.

Shah asked all security agencies to take “more stringent action on infiltration and acts of terror with a ruthless approach.”

In over two-hour long meet, the Minister said “it should be our goal to uproot the existence of terrorists.”

Shah mentioned that the narco network is providing support to infiltrators and terrorists to carry out their activities, stressing the need to take “prompt action against terror funding from the proceeds of the narcotics trade with alacrity and rigour.”

Shah directed agencies to make new appointments in the posts of Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in view of the timely implementation of the new criminal laws.

He emphasised the Modi government’s ‘policy of zero tolerance’ against terrorism to achieve the goal of a terrorism-free Jammu and Kashmir. The Minister also directed all security agencies to remain vigilant and continue to work in synergy to eliminate terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.

Chairing the high-level review meeting on the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir here in the national capital, Shah later appreciated the efforts of the security agencies for significant improvement in all parameters of the security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir.

The meeting was attended by the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Director of Intelligence Bureau Tapan Deka, the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Jammu and Kashmir, along with senior officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Jammu and Kashmir administration.

The Home Minister had also held an important review meeting on the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday. The meeting was attended by the Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, the Home Secretary and other senior officers of MHA and Army.

The discussion in today’s meet centered on counter-terrorism efforts and measures to maintain peace in the Union Territory, covering the prevailing security situation, ongoing counter-terrorism operations, and the future roadmap to curb the menace.

The meeting also emphasised the importance of coordination among security agencies in the ongoing fight against terrorism in the region. Recent security developments in the Valley, including any new challenges posed by terror groups and insurgent activities were also major issues of discussions.

This meeting follows a series of similar security reviews held in the past, where the Union Home Minister has emphasised strengthening intelligence networks, countering cross-border infiltration, and accelerating development initiatives in the region. In previous meetings, Shah has stressed a zero-tolerance policy against terrorism and called for enhanced coordination between central and state security agencies.

Over the past few years, the government has ramped up counter-terror measures, dismantled terror modules, and increased developmental outreach in Jammu and Kashmir. The security review is crucial in light of recent incidents, ongoing anti-terror operations, and the government’s efforts to ensure long-term peace in the region. (ANI)

Nepal Bans Solo Expedition Of 8000er’s Including Mt. Everest

Nepal has officially banned solo expeditions to all mountains above 8,000 meters, including Mount Everest, by amending its mountaineering regulations, according to the government publication, Nepal Gazette.

The Sixth amendment of the mountaineering regulation was released late on Tuesday evening after which climbers were banned from solo expedition in all the 8000ers peaks.

As per the new regulations, every two members of a mountaineering team must be accompanied by at least one altitude worker or mountain guide. This rule applies to all mountains above 8,000 meters, including Mount Everest.

“When climbing a mountain peak with an altitude of more than eight thousand meters, every two members of the mountaineering team must be accompanied by at least one altitude worker or mountain guide, and when climbing other mountains, the mountaineering team must take at least one mountain guide with them,” the lately introduced provision states.

This new provision now is applicable for all the mountains above 8000 meters including the Highest Peak- Mount Everest.

With new regulation in effect, solo climbing era on the peaks has formally ended with government determined to not let anyone regardless their experience to go solo to the mountain. This now will be applicable for alpine-style or the expedition-style climbers as well.

The lately adopted changes also has formally publicized the hike in royalty fee for the foreign climbers attempting to summit Mount Everest from the standard south route in spring to 15000 USD per person.

The spring season expedition which sees high influx of climbers in the Himalayan Nation from the month of March to May previously used to be 11,000 USD. The new regulation also has increased the climbing royalty for the autumn season, running from September to November to 7,500 USD from existing 5,500 USD.

Similarly, the Winter expedition which runs from December to February and monsoon from June to August also has been revised to 3,750 USD from existing 2,750 USD.

The updated provision also has incorporated the revised fees for other 8000ers. The royalty of spring expedition has increased by nearly two folds from 1800 to 3000 USD. The autumn fee now stands at 1500 USD from existing 900 USD while the winter and monsoon expedition has become dearer as it has been revised from 450 USD to 750 USD.

In regards to Nepali climbers, the royalty for normal route in spring season has doubled from Nrs. 75,000 to 150,000. Nepal in the year 2015 had revised the royalty fee by switching from a group-based system to a uniform fee of USD 11,000 per climber for Everest’s spring season via the normal route.

In regards to the slew changes that the Himalayan Nation has adopted lately, the family members of the climbers, guides and high-altitude base camp workers are also banned from the base camp. In case of prior approval from the tourism department, the family members can be exempted for a stay at the base camp not exceeding two days, the new regulation states.

In addition, the new regulatory measures also have assigned the high-altitude guides to “self-declare” their clients successful summit of the peak. To prove the successful summit, the expedition organizers and liaison officers has been mandated to submit original photo showing the climber’s face clearly.

In order to establish the authenticity of the successful summit, the photo must bear mountain ranges in the background, which is the new eligibility criteria to receive an Everest Climb certificate.

Apart from the climbers the revised regulatory provision has increased daily allowance for liaison officers, daily wages of high-altitude guides, and base camp workers paid by climbers. Liaison officers’ daily wages have increased from Rs500 to Rs1,600. Sirdars (lead Sherpas) will now receive Rs1,500 daily, up from Rs500.

In a similar vein, high-altitude guides’ wages have jumped from Rs 350 to Rs 1,200 per day. Base camp workers’ daily wages have increased from Rs300 to Rs1,000.

In an attempt to curb pollution in high mountains, the climbers from this year’s spring mandatorily have to bring their waste, including human waste, back to base camp for proper disposal. Climbers are required to carry biodegradable bags for waste collection in the upper reaches.

Nearly 8,900 people have summited the world’s highest peak from Nepal’s side since 1953.

The new provisions would come into effect from 1st of September this year with the start in the spring expedition. (ANI)

Plane Carrying Indians Who Allegedly Illegally Migrated To US Arrives In Amritsar

The US Air Force plane carrying Indian citizens who allegedly illegally migrated to the US arrived in Punjab’s Amritsar on Wednesday.

Earlier on Tuesday, a US Embassy spokesperson said that while specific details cannot be shared, the United States is vigorously enforcing its border and immigration laws. The spokesperson emphasised that the actions taken send a “clear message that illegal migration is not worth the risk.”

“I have received a number of inquiries on the report of a deportation flight to India. I can’t share any details on those inquiries, but I can share, on the record, that the United States is vigorously enforcing its border, tightening immigration laws, and removing illegal migrants. These actions send a clear message: illegal migration is not worth the risk,” a US Embassy spokesperson said.

On January 24, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had stated that it would facilitate the return of Indian nationals “overstaying” or residing without proper documentation in the United States or “anywhere in the world.”

While addressing a press briefing in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We are against illegal immigration, especially because it is linked to several forms of organised crime.”

He added, “For Indians not just in the United States, but anywhere in the world, if they are Indian nationals and they are overstaying, or they are in a particular country without proper documentation, we will take them back, provided documents are shared with us so that we can verify their nationality and that they are indeed Indians. If that happens to be the case, we will take things forward and facilitate their return to India.”

The deportation has already taken a political turn with the Congress claiming that the US was treating Indian citizens poorly.

“Shocking & shameful! The way the US is deporting Indians–chained like criminals–is inhumane & unacceptable. Why is PM Narendra Modi silent? Where is self-respect? Dr S Jaishankar what are you doing to stop this humiliation of our people? Speak up & act Now,” posted Congress MP Manickam Tagore.

Meanwhile, CBS News reported that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is releasing some migrant detainee. This as its detention system has exceeded maximum capacity amid a spike in arrests under President Trump. According to CBS News, space inside detention facilities was at 109% capacity, with the close to 42,000 migrant detainees. (ANI)

If there is a call time of 6:00 AM, she reaches the set at 5:30 AM. She always arrives early while I always come on time,” said Junaid Khan.

In response, Khushi shared her reason for reaching the set early.”I get tense even if I am only five seconds late. My hairstylist and makeup team always message me to not come before them. It’s a habit I developed from my childhood. I always come early. Sometimes, the generators start after I reach the set.”
