Delhi Assembly: AAP MLAs Say Not Allowed To Enter Premises, Stage Protest

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs on Thursday staged a protest outside the Delhi Assembly ahead of the commencement of proceedings of the third day of the new session under the Bharatiya Janata Party government.

Aam Aadmi Party MLA and Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Atishi and other party MLAs sat on a protest after being reportedly denied entry into the Assembly premises. AAP leaders claimed they were blocked from entering the Assembly today by the police on the orders of the Speaker and alleged that barricades were placed on the entry road to stop them.

Speaking to ANI, Atishi said, “Police officers are saying that we (AAP MLAs) are suspended from the assembly, so we will not even be allowed to enter the assembly premises. This is undemocratic and unconstitutional… To date, this has never happened in the history of the country… Even in Parliament, there are protests under the Gandhi statue even after being suspended… After all, how can we be stopped? We tried to talk to the Speaker but nothing is happening.”

In a post on X, LoP Atishi said, “AAP MLAs were suspended for three days for chanting ‘Jai Bhim.’ Today, they are not even being allowed to enter the Vidhan Sabha premises”

Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta had on February 25 extended the suspension of all 21 Aam Aadmi Party MLAs for three days, after they were marshaled out for raising slogans as they continued to protest against the ruling BJP for allegedly removing the photographs of Baba Saheb Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh from the Chief Minister’s office.

BJP’s MLA Mohan Singh Bisht today said that the attitude of the AAP was “wrong” further stating that the MLAs needed to bring a change in their behaviour.

Speaking to mediapersons Bisht said “Their attitude has been very wrong…if the LG is giving the speech, then they should listen to it… I have never seen such an attitude from anyone before… they should bring a change in their behaviour… it is the people that have chosen us… the party only gives us a symbol…they need to have knowledge on the decorum that needs to be maintained…”

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Satish Upadhyay said that the corruption exposed in the CAG report would be discussed in Delhi Assembly and alleged that the AAP party had benefitted its close relatives and caused a revenue loss of over Rs 2,000 crore to the national capital, while asserting that the “real face” of AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet would be exposed.

Speaking to ANI, Upadhyay said, “The kind of corruption that has been exposed in this CAG report, the way they (AAP) have benefited their close relatives, will be discussed today, and the real face of AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and his entire cabinet will also be exposed…” (ANI)

Push For Monolithic Hindi Identity Kills Ancient Mother Tongues: Stalin

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday strongly opposed the three-language policy in Tamil Nadu, saying that the push for a “monolithic Hindi identity” is what ‘killed’ the “ancient mother tongues”.

Taking to social media platform X, the CM wrote that Hindi had “swallowed” several Indian languages, including Bhojpuri, Awadhi, Braj, and Garhwali, which are now struggling to survive.

“My dear sisters and brothers from other states. Ever wondered how many Indian languages Hindi has swallowed? Bhojpuri, Maithili, Awadhi, Braj, Bundeli, Garhwali, Kumaoni, Magahi, Marwari, Malvi, Chhattisgarhi, Santhali, Angika, Ho, Kharia, Khortha, Kurmali, Kurukh, Mundari and many more are now gasping for survival. The push for a monolithic Hindi identity is what kills ancient mother tongues. UP and Bihar were never just ‘Hindi heartlands.’ Their real languages are now relics of the past. Tamil Nadu resists because we know where this ends,” the post read.

On Wednesday, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) President Selvaperunthagai announced protests against Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to Coimbatore on February 26, accusing him of pushing the three-language policy and the New Education Policy, as well as allegedly attacking former Law and Justice Minister Bhimrao Ambedkar in Parliament.

“Our Union Home Minister will visit Coimbatore. Democratically we are going to protest against him by showing black flags. He is continuously attacking Tamil Nadu and is against the state government’s proposals. Three language policy, the Prime Minister Education Scheme and the New Education Policy. He attacked Baba Saheb Ambedkar in the Parliament, so whenever he will come to the state, the Congress Committee has decided to protest against him by showing black flags,” TNCC chief Selvaperunthagai told reporters on Tuesday.

Tamil organisations and state parties have also announced protests against Amit Shah’s visit, stating that they will show black flags to the Union Home Minister. They have accused the central government of trying to impose Hindi on Tamil Nadu, though the Union government has maintained that it respects the Tamil language and is not forcing any other language on the state. Champions Trophy 2025: Afghanistan, Australia & South Africa Battle for Semi-Final Spot

Afghanistan’s win over England at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Wednesday has put the Hasmatullah Shahidi-led side in contention for the semi-final spot from Group B along with Australia and South Africa.

While India and New Zealand have been confirmed as semi-finalists from Group A, the hunt for a final-four spot in Group B is set to go right down to the wire.

In a must-win contest for both teams, Afghanistan edged out England by eight runs in Lahore. The result means Jos Buttler and co are now officially out of contention for a semi-final spot.

However, for Afghanistan, a ticket to the final four hasn’t been punched yet. They will join Australia and South Africa, who split points after a washout on Tuesday, in a final push for the knockouts.

We take a look at how each of the three teams can confirm a place in the semis:

Afghanistan:

Despite a win against England, Afghanistan sit third in Group B, lagging behind Australia and South Africa by a point. The Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side are at a crossroads with Australia as the two teams prepare for a virtual quarter-final on Friday in Lahore. A win for Afghanistan will be enough to seal a spot in the semi-finals.

Australia:

While a win will also confirm Australia’s qualification for the semi-finals, having a point in hand over Afghanistan means Steve Smith and co will go through even if the game doesn’t take place owing to a washout, as was the case for their fixture against South Africa.

South Africa:

A win against England in their final group-stage fixture will be enough to see the Proteas through.

South Africa can also progress if they lose against England and Australia defeat Afghanistan. However, if England win their final game and Afghanistan beat Australia, then the Proteas will be in a tight NRR contest with the Aussies, depending on their final results. (ANI)

‘Pity Some Gujaratis Back CAA In India, But Want To Settle In US By Any Means’

Swati Goswami, an Ahmedabad-based writer, shares her views on Gujarati hypocrisy and the anti-immigrant policy of Donald Trump. Her analysis:

Gujarati merchants have a long and rich history of migration, dating back to the 16th century. Contrary to popular belief, they probably weren’t the pioneers in exploring cross-border opportunities. While Gujaratis are renowned for their entrepreneurial spirit and skills, within India and their ‘second home’, the USA, other regions also have their stories to tell. Tamil merchants probably migrated first for gold trade, though their achievements often go unaccounted and underappreciated in northern and western India.

I can recall the friendly banter between Gujaratis and Bengalis following former JNU alumni and economist, Abhijit Banerjee’s Nobel Prize win in 2019. Bengalis proudly highlighted their pursuit of higher education beyond borders while Gujaratis boasted about their maritime trade endeavours much before them. The coastal locations of Gujarat, Bengal, and Tamil Nadu facilitated such pursuits, combining geographical advantages with resourcefulness and ambition.

Interestingly, the famous Moroccan explorer, Ibn Battuta, travelled to Gujarat via Delhi in the 14th century, visiting Khambhat, then known as Cambay, which became a hub for international trade with the Gulf and African countries. However, Khambhat faced communal violence in February 2020, alongside North Delhi. This highlights the extent to which a section of Gujaratis can go to earn money despite their equally infamous communal tendencies. We do see many of them leading successful lives in Muslim countries like Dubai, but, back home, for certain sections, the politics of hate wins.

It’s perplexing to observe the Gujarati obsession with America, both legally and illegally, and the irony in the anti-migrant sentiments prevalent in Gujarat and the US. Both regions pride themselves on their achievements — Gujarat as a resourceful state and America as a global superpower. However, their economies rely heavily on migrants. In Gujarat, workers from UP, Bihar, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh form a crucial part, not just in construction but also in skilled sectors like gardening, street food vending, and domestic work.

In the US, Democratic and Republican administrations have highlighted ‘outsiders’ in their campaigns, often overlooking the significant contributions of Asian or Indian immigrants, including Gujaratis, to their economy. It’s ironic that Gujaratis in America advocate for citizens’ rights while supporting policies like the CAA back in India.

Gujarat and America often blame migrants for crimes committed by their own people. In the US, most school shootings have reportedly been perpetrated by white individuals, not minorities. Similarly, the Gujarat pogrom in 2002 were instigated by locals, not migrants. I have often heard Gujaratis attribute crime to migrants from UP and Bihar, which is a dangerously misleading narrative.

As someone from UP, I find it less pretentious compared to Gujarat. UP, despite its communal tendencies, doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. Gujarat, with its wealth and global exposure, often prioritizes image over substance, as seen in projects like the Sabarmati Riverfront, which pushed slum dwellers to live next to the biggest landfill in Ahmedabad. During the Trump visit to Ahmedabad in 2020, the poor were hidden behind a big curtain.

It’s puzzling to see Gujarati NRIs become fervent patriots while rarely venturing beyond Gujarat. If India cannot provide them the life they desire, what do they feel so patriotic about? And if Gujarat is so enriching, why do they choose to leave?

ALSO READ: Dignity Deported

There has been a significant trend of high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) leaving India, especially since the pandemic. It’s striking that not only middle and upper-middle-income individuals, but a substantial number of HNIs have been emigrating since the pandemic. The US has seen a rise in wealthy Indians immigrating through investment visas, which offer benefits to entire families. These individuals not only contribute to the economy through investments, but also employ others. The question remains: who is accountable for this multi-dimensional loss to the Indian economy and employment generation?

It’s no different from how the government highlights school enrolment numbers, while ignoring the dropout rates. Similarly, we see misleading narratives on social media about people returning to India due to its supposed ease and opportunities, visible only to a select few. If India is really thriving, why are so many Indians eager to leave? And if Gujarat is so resourceful, why do Gujaratis make colonies in the US?

The way this world is functioning, it’s clear that we’re not learning any lessons. Illegal immigration may decrease temporarily, but, could resume later. Even Trump might become preoccupied with other issues. If more deportations occur, pressure on the Indian government, which has remained silent thus far, may finally build up. This could prompt Modi to at least pretend to discuss the issue with Trump, and the resulting photo opportunity might get more mainstream media attention than the actual stories of deportation.

It’s not surprising that I haven’t encountered in-person discussions about this issue here. Instead, I have only seen social media posts criticizing Modi’s silence on the inhumane treatment of illegal immigrants, many of whom are Gujaratis. The illegality surrounding migration is ingrained in certain aspects of the work culture here. Remember the tragic case of the Gujarati couple who froze to death in 2022 while attempting to enter the US illegally? One of the two individuals convicted for human smuggling in this case was a Gujarati too!

Beyond seeking work or residency in the US, agencies in Gujarat profit by sending students abroad using falsified paperwork, a practice so common that they even have a name for it – Kabootarbaazi. It’s a fact that certain Gujaratis have been involved in some of India’s largest financial scams. On a smaller scale, the state has a higher percentage of fraud involving cryptocurrency, misrepresentation, and impersonation. There are bizarre cases of individuals impersonating judges or traffic police for personal gain. This suggests a ‘cultural issue’ with the way people here approach ‘earning money’, characterized by greed, a fascination with shortcuts, and unprofessionalism.

The way certain Gujarati businessmen operate, and the support they receive from the government, has contributed to the state’s political stability for three decades. The symbiotic relationship between the government, bureaucrats, and corporations benefits all parties involved, fostering a culture of compromised work ethics.

Over 20k Illegal Migrants Held Since Trump’s First Month In Office: US Govt

More than 20,000 undocumented immigrants were arrested during Donald Trump’s first month as President, CNN reported, quoting the Department of Homeland Security.

The Trump administration launched an immigration crackdown in the moments after his inauguration and publicised daily arrest totals during his first couple of weeks in office, as per CNN.

The pace of at-large arrests — meaning those done in the community — exceeded the Biden administration. In the last fiscal year, under Biden, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted around 33,000 at-large arrests, CNN reported.

“President Trump and this Administration are saving lives every day because of the actions we are taking to secure the border and deport illegal alien criminals. Hundreds of thousands of criminals were let into this country illegally. We are sending them home, and they will never be allowed to return,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement Wednesday.

Senior Trump officials have expressed frustration with the pace of arrests, resulting in the removal of the acting ICE Director Caleb Vitello on February 22.

Despite denying publicly that he’s unhappy with the levels of deportations, President Donald Trump, who selected Vitello to fill the post, has complained privately about it to his top immigration aides, according to several people familiar with the matter.

Vitello, a career government official, is expected to be reassigned.

“The Acting Director of ICE is not being fired — he is no longer in an Administrative role, but is overseeing all field and enforcement operations: finding, arresting, and deporting illegal aliens, which is a major priority of the President and Secretary,” said Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin in a statement.

Earlier in the day, during his first Cabinet meeting, Trump said that his administration set a record on least number of illegal migrants entering the country in the last 50 years.

“We also having tremendous support from border patrol, from ICE agents- [they] have been unbelievable border patrol. Their leadership at border patrol has been incredible, and they’re working very well. Actually, we set records on the least number of illegal aliens and migrants coming into our country that we had that we’ve had in more than 50 years, and we did this all within a period of weeks because we took over a mess,” he said.

Trump recounted how the world was pouring inside the US, and how the US border czars prevented them.

“The world was pouring in and remember — they were coming in from jails and prisons and mental institutions and insane asylums and there were gang members and drug dealers. Anybody wanted to come, in they could and from not just South America — from all over the world. So it’s amazing what they’ve done, and Kristi Noem and Tom Homan — the job they’ve done has been absolutely amazing. We want people to come into our country by the way, but they have to come in legally,” he said. (ANI)

CBSE Draft Policy Hurts Every Punjabi: Harjot Singh Bains

Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains has objected to CBSE’s draft policy for Class 10 board exams in the 2025-26 academic session, criticising the exclusion of Punjabi from the list of main subjects and warning that CBSE certificates will be invalid in Punjab if the language is clubbed with foreign languages.

Speaking to ANI, Bains said, “CBSE published a draft policy for Class 10 for the academic session 2025-26, that the examinations would be held twice – in February and May… CBSE says that there will be 5 main subjects – Science, Math, Social Science, English and Hindi. The exams for these 5 subjects will be held as it is done at present. Besides these, they formed 2 sub-groups. One group has a regional language and a foreign language. The other group has vocational courses… The exam for regional and foreign languages will be held on the same day.”

Criticising the move, he added, “If you want to study Punjabi and Mandarin, exams for both will be held on the same day. You removed the state’s main language from the list of main subjects… The group of regional and foreign languages has Punjabi missing from it… BJP Punjab tweets from its official handle that there was a clerical mistake… Punjabi is the language of not just Punjab, it is spoken in J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, UP, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata… I have written a strong letter to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. I said that this was not a clerical mistake and we wanted action against the officer who did this. Every Punjabi is hurt by this.”

Bains further stated that the Punjab government has made it mandatory for all boards operating in the state to include Punjabi as a main subject in Class 10.

“Punjab Government has issued its own notification that all Boards in Punjab, if they want to impart education in Punjab, will have to have Punjabi as the main subject in Class 10… You can’t club it with any foreign language. Otherwise, your CBSE certificate will be null and void,” he warned.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Wednesday issued an addendum to the draft policy on conducting two board exams for Class 10, clarifying that all languages will continue to be offered in the 2025-26 academic session.

The national board stated that the list of languages in the draft was only indicative, implying that it was not final. CBSE confirmed that it would continue to offer all languages, including Punjabi, Russian, Nepali, Limboo, Lepcha, Sindhi, Malayalam, Odia, Assamese, Kannada, Kokborok, Telugu, Arabic, and Persian, in addition to those mentioned under the “Regional and Foreign languages” group.

On Tuesday, CBSE proposed an important reform in the Class 10 examination system, introducing two board exams from the 2025-26 academic session.

The move is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and aims to reduce academic pressure by allowing students to improve their scores. The proposal was discussed in a high-level meeting at the Ministry of Education, chaired by the Union Minister of Education.

A draft policy has been uploaded on the CBSE website, inviting feedback from schools, teachers, parents, and students until 9th March 2025. The NEP 2020 suggests holding Class 10 and 12 board exams twice a year to reduce student stress and provide more opportunities for improvement, focusing on competency-based assessment instead of rote learning. This approach allows students to retain their best score while making exams more flexible and student-friendly. (ANI)

Afghanistan Knock England Out of Champions Trophy In A Thriller

Afghanistan upsets England as they clinch victory by 8 runs. England needed 326 in their fifty overs but fell short, getting bowled out for 317 in 49.5 overs, resulting in their elimination from the ICC Champions Trophy.

Joe Root scored his first ODI century in six years. Chasing 326, Root’s brilliant 120 came off 111 deliveries, featuring 11 boundaries and one six, but it was not enough to secure victory.

Azmatullah Omarzai struck to dismiss well-settled England batter. This was Omarzai’s third wicket of the match.

Earlier, Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran scripted history with a sensational knock of 177 off 146 deliveries, the highest individual score in ICC Champions Trophy history, surpassing England’s Ben Duckett’s 165. His record-breaking innings helped Afghanistan post a formidable 325/7 in 50 overs against England in their Group B clash in Lahore on Wednesday.

Zadran not only became the first Afghan player to score a century in the ICC Champions Trophy, but also the first Afghan batter to score a century in any ICC event, marking a monumental moment for his nation in global cricket. (ANI)

Trump Gets Teary-Eyed Over Gulf Of America Map

US President Donald Trump got emotional while looking at a map of the newly renamed “Gulf of America” during an Oval Office media event on Tuesday (local time).

“I’m just looking at it–it’s beautiful, really beautiful. I’m getting teary-eyed, but don’t you dare say, ‘Trump broke down and cried,'” he humorously remarked, pointing to the map. This was posted on X by Margo Martin, Special Assistant to the President and Communications Advisor.

This moment comes after Trump’s controversial executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico, sparking both support and criticism. He signed a proclamation declaring February 9th as “Gulf of America Day” during a flight to New Orleans.

During a flight to New Orleans, he signed a proclamation officially declaring February 9th as “Gulf of America Day.” This declaration was part of his broader push to alter historical names and assert his administration’s stance on American identity.

The White House has been vocally supportive of the renaming despite backlash from numerous media outlets, particularly the Associated Press (AP), which continues to use the name “Gulf of Mexico” in its coverage.

The conflict between Trump and the AP escalated after the White House began systematically excluding the agency from key presidential events, including press briefings aboard Air Force One.

This exclusion led the AP to file a lawsuit, arguing that the actions of the administration violated the First and Fifth Amendments, specifically its right to freedom of the press and due process.

In response, a federal judge denied the AP’s request for an immediate injunction to restore its access, but a full hearing on the matter is scheduled for March.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the administration’s position, stating that the right to question the president is a “privilege, not a legal right,” emphasizing that the government has the authority to manage its interactions with the press as it sees fit.

This legal battle over media access and the renaming controversy has become a flashpoint in the ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and major news organizations. (ANI)
