3 Arrested Over Rape-Murder Of Dalit Woman In Ayodhya

Three people were arrested in connection with an alleged murder of a Dalit girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya, the police said.

Earlier, Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi condemned the brutal murder of a Dalit girl in Ayodhya and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Uttar Pradesh of being “anti-Bahujan,” adding that the “heinous atrocities” have been on the rise in the state.

Alleging that the administration didn’t pay heed to the victim girl’s family’s cry for help, Rahul questioned how many more families will have to suffer like this.

In a post on X, Rahul said, “The inhumanity and brutal murder of a Dalit daughter in Ayodhya is heart-breaking and very shameful. If the administration had paid heed to the cry for help of the girl’s family that had been echoing for three days, perhaps her life could have been saved.”

“Another daughter’s life ended due to this heinous crime. After all, how many more families will have to cry and suffer like this? Under the anti-Bahujan BJP rule, especially in Uttar Pradesh, the heinous atrocities, injustice and murders against Dalits are increasing rampantly.”

Furthermore, Gandhi appealed to the authorities to treat the victim’s family with dignity and not subject them to harassment, as he claimed had happened in similar cases in the past.

“The Uttar Pradesh government should immediately investigate this crime, ensure that the culprits are given the harshest punishment and take strict action against the responsible policemen. And please do not harass the victim’s family as usual. The daughters of the country and the entire Dalit community are looking towards you for justice,” he added.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad on Sunday broke down and wept at a press conference after the unclothed body of a Dalit girl was found in a village in Uttar Pradesh.

Addressing a press conference, he lashed out at the state government, terming it an “extremely sad and inhuman” crime. He further said that if justice is not served, he would resign from the Lok Sabha.

Earlier, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi also slammed the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government and stated that in the “BJP’s Jungle Raj,” no one listens to the “cries of Dalits, tribals, backward and poor.”

“The kind of barbarism that was meted out to a Dalit girl who had gone to listen to the Bhagwat Katha in Ayodhya would send shivers down the spine of any human being. Such cruel incidents shame all of humanity,” Priyanka Gandhi said in a post on X.

“The girl was missing for three days but the police did nothing. In the BJP’s Jungle Raj, no one is there to listen to the cries of Dalits, tribals, backward and poor. The UP government has become synonymous with atrocities on Dalits. I demand that strict action be taken against those guilty of atrocities as well as the responsible policemen and officers,” she added.

Meanwhile, Priyanka Maurya, member of UP Women Commission met victims’ families and assured them of justice in the incident.

Speaking to ANI after meeting the victim’s family, Maurya said, “It is a very sad incident. I came here to meet the family members of the victim. I assured their family that justice will be served. Whoever has committed this incident should understand that the Yogi government is in the state and the family will get justice.” (ANI)

Make In India Has Failed: Rahul

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday claimed that the Make in India initiative has failed.

Rahul Gandhi was speaking in the Lok Sabha during the Motion of Thanks (MoT) on the President’s address.

He stated that he did not find anything new in the Presidential address delivered at the inauguration of the Budget session.

“I heard the President’s address. I sat there with Kharge Ji, and I listened to it. I must say, I struggled through the President’s address to maintain my attention on what was being said because I had heard pretty much the same Presidential address last time, the time before that, and the time before that,” Rahul Gandhi said.

“It was the same list of things the government has done. ‘We’ve done this, we’ve done that’… 50 or 100 things the government has done,” he added.

“I was sitting there thinking, ‘Okay, I’m being critical of what is being said. I’m saying that this is not the type of address that should be delivered.’ Then a question came to my mind: What type of Presidential address should be delivered, and how would that address be different from what we heard?” he further suggested.

Rahul Gandhi emphasised the need to focus on the country’s production in his address, saying, “Today, I would lay out some dimensions of what an alternative address would look like, what the INDIA bloc would probably focus on, and where we would lay emphasis. The future of the country will be decided by the youth of the country.”

“So, I think anything we say has to address them. The first thing in front of us that the PM would accept, and everyone in this room would accept, is that we have grown fast; we are growing now, but we are still growing. A universal problem we have faced is that we have not been able to tackle the problem of unemployment,” he added.

“Neither the UPA government nor the NDA government has given a clear-cut answer to youth unemployment. I don’t think anybody will disagree with that,” Rahul Gandhi stated.

He pointed out that the share of production in the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) has decreased from 15.3 per cent in 2014 to 12.6 per cent in 2025.

“The PM proposed the Make in India program. I think it was a good idea; we saw the statue, we saw the logo, we saw the investment, and the result is right in front of you. Manufacturing fell from 15.3 per cent of GDP in 2014 to 12.6 per cent of GDP today. That is the lowest share of manufacturing in history,” he stated.

He said he would not blame this on the Prime Minister, as it would be unfair to say that the effort was lacking.

“Gandhi stated that ‘Make in India’ was a good idea, but it is pretty clear that it failed.”

“I would not blame this on the Prime Minister; it is unfair to say that he did not try. I think the Prime Minister tried, and I think conceptually, Make in India was a good idea, but it is pretty clear that it failed.”

“The first question the alternative vision would answer to the youth of our country is how to solve this problem of employment. Any country essentially organizes two things: you can organize consumption, and you can organize production,” he added.

“Pretty much every government since 1990 has done a decent job in consumption. But as a country, we have failed in organizing production,” Rahul Gandhi said.

“The record of the country in organizing production is dismal, and essentially what we have done is hand over the organization of production to China. Even though we say we make this phone in India, it’s not a fact. This phone is not made in India; it’s assembled in India,” the Leader of Opposition further added.

Holding up his phone in the Lok Sabha, he said, “All the components of this phone are made in China. The network that is produced is made in China. So whenever we use a phone or wear a Chinese t-shirt, or a Bangladeshi t-shirt, or wear a pair of Chinese sneakers, we are paying tax to China because some Chinese youngster is earning to make that product.”

“So the first message I would give in a Presidential address is to focus completely on production.”

He further stated that if we do not focus on production and only focus on consumption, we will find that we will run a huge deficit, increase inequality, and run into serious problems.

“I would like to tell all the youngsters of the country that there is an exciting revolution taking place. The heart of the changing world is that we are moving from the world of the internal combustion engine to electric motors. We are moving from petrol to batteries. We are moving to wind, solar, and potentially nuclear energy,” the Congress leader further said.

He highlighted that the then Congress government “rode” the computer revolution.

“The last time there was a revolution was called the computer revolution. The government of India had a clear focus; we looked at that revolution. It was a Congress government, and we decided we were going to focus on the development of software, and we rode that wave of that revolution. Today, you can see the result. I remember people laughing,” Gandhi stated.

He also referenced the Russia-Ukraine war, noting, “I said that the revolution is going to change everything. A war is going on in Ukraine. The actual war is between an internal combustion machine and the motor.”

“The electric motor is inside the drone, and the machine is in the tank. If you look at what’s going on in Ukraine, the tanks are dying by the thousands, while small drones are destroying the tanks and the entire artillery of Russia and Ukraine,” the Leader of the Opposition further added. (ANI)

One for the Hill—The 90-Hour Work Week Dilemma

Biswajit Bhattacharya, a writer abbatoir and ping ponger, who finds solace in theatres, takes a swipe at the ‘hottake’ by an eminent industrialist. In his own cryptic words:

Let me paraphrase a line from a popular Kendrick Lamar rap:

Bing-bop-boom-boom-boom-bop-bam
The type of shift I’m on, you wouldn’t understand

Wyrd Numbers: 70-90-100 hours of work, what’s this new SI unit of productivity? I knew success never came within the clutches of 9-5, but this seems beyond the ambit of a hustle mindset. Even motivational quotes from Google can’t rescue.

What’s interesting though are the addendums that come with it like ‘hustle harder’, ‘nation’s development’, ‘working on Sundays’, ‘changing the world’, yada yada. Amongst these emerged an emerald of a hottake by an eminent industrialist saying, “What do you do sitting at home? How long can you stare at your wife?”

Bruh! 10/10 ragebait.

It got me thinking though, about an absurdist’s magnum opus and how they don’t actually hate you when they see you rolling.

Here’s a rant:

Hades punished Sisyphus to keep the boulder rolling up the slopes of Tartarus for all eternity. Contextually speaking, going uphill has always been a beacon of ascent, of success. But capitalistic fever dreams have grossly overlooked scientific reasoning.

If I, Sisyphus, must roll upwards (and onwards), what kind of footwear do I have? What breakfast did I eat this morning? Why does the boulder feel heavier today? What training have I acquired to roll it better (and how much do the modules cost)? My clothes reek of perspiration, a mix of change and cleansing. Did I mention footwear? Yes, I can’t afford new ones on this pay. The weather has made the terrain even more cumbersome. Do stones rolling upwards gather moss?

But beyond the confines of questioning overwork, misogyny, ethics of capitalism, and work-life balance, I do feel like it’s wrong to keep going while letting myself wither in this piecemeal fashion. I do have well-defined KPIs (performance indicators) to prove my worth; I do have the temerity to point out this fatigued routine; I know my L&D is constant; I know when to stop.

I can simply let the boulder avalanche down.

Perhaps the modern Sisyphus can rise to be the modern Prometheus.

These are just a teaspoon of the questions and ramblings I indulge in on Sundays, staring at the wall—since my schedule is so abjectly preoccupied with the aforesaid notions that finding a spouse to stare at seems impossible.

But my liege lord, Hades, believes it’s in the nation’s best interests not to look down (upon thee?) and to keep moving upwards and onwards and upwards, because, as he says, “the struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a person’s heart.”

Ergo, one must imagine Sisyphus happy (or so they say).

Meanwhile, with the Delhi election less than a week away, political parties have intensified their campaigning.

On Sunday, launching a scathing attack on the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the “AAP-DA” (disaster) government has ruined Delhi over the past eleven years. He assured the people that if the BJP comes to power in Delhi, not a single slum would be demolished, nor would any welfare schemes be discontinued.

He asserted that the AAP government should not be given another chance, as it would waste another five years in Delhi.

The Delhi Assembly elections will take place on February 5 in a single phase, with the counting of votes scheduled for February 8.

The national capital is set to witness a triangular contest between the BJP, Congress, and AAP. (ANI)

Huma Qureshi launches her debut novel Zeba: An Accidental Superhero at Jaipur Literature Festival

Actress Huma Qureshi made her debut as an author by launching her novel ‘Zeba: An Accidental Superhero’ at the ongoing Jaipur Literature Festival on Sunday.

During an interaction with the media, Huma opened up about her journey of writing the book, sharing that the initial plan was to turn the story into a film before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted those plans.

“I started the book in 2019. After writing some 10-20 pages, I showed it to some people and everyone said it was a good idea. Honestly, when I started writing this, the idea was to make a film or any television show on it, so I did that thing in that sense. Then Covid came, so whatever plans were there, all were stalled.”

Huma continued, ” Then I started thinking of whether shall I write a script on it or turn it into a graphic novel. I delayed enough for me to write it myself. I asked many people to write but they all came back and said that you must write it because only you can write it. And then it took me about two years and whatever I felt at that point I was very much able to express that in the book very honestly so whatsoever I was around feeling I was able to pen it down.”

The actress, known for her work in Gangs of Wasseypur, described the writing process as a “cathartic” experience and recommended writing as a tool for managing anxiety.

“It was a cathartic process I think. So I recommend that anybody who is dealing with any kind of anxiety must write, it’s a great way to vomit anything on the page,” said Huma.

Huma also reflected on her career in Bollywood, noting how her experiences in the film industry helped shape the book.

“I think two things are very important in the life of any artist: success and failure. A person learns very little from success and learns a lot from failure. I think the last ten years of the film industry have been very important for me. I have grown up before you all (media). You guys have seen my success. Saw my good and bad days. Hit-flops and everything. These things help you in learning. I tried as hard as I could to put that thing in that book as well.”

Huma also revealed her plans to make a film based on the book. The actress is known for her work in ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur’, ‘Race 3’, ‘Jolly LLB 2’ and others. (ANI)

“Amrit Snan started on the Ghats by Naga Sadhus. With faith and devotion, the banks of Triveni are witnessing the ancient Indian culture and traditions,” the Maha Kumbh administration said in a post on X.

As of February 3, over 340 million (34 crore) devotees have participated in the sacred bathing ritual since the commencement of the Maha Kumbh Mela on January 13, according to the Uttar Pradesh Information Department.

The number of Kalpwasis–devotees observing month-long spiritual austerities–has exceeded 1 million, adding to the spiritual fervour.

Meanwhile, a large number of devotees gathered at Prayagraj to take a holy dip in the River Ganga and offer prayers to Maa Saraswati on the occasion of ‘Basant Panchami’ in the early hours of Monday.

A massive influx of devotees was witnessed at Prayagraj junction as the city gears up to host the sacred Amrit Snan on February 3, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Basant Panchami.

The event is part of the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, drawing pilgrims from across the country to take the holy dip in the Ganges.

The holy city saw devotees from different parts of the country, with many also performing charitable acts and rituals.

It is believed that Maa Saraswati was born on Basant Panchami, and taking a dip in the Ganga on this auspicious day holds great significance.

Speaking about the preparedness for the Amrit Snan today, Additional Mela Adhikari Vivek Chaturvedi said, “Today is the “Amrit Snan’ on the occasion of Basant Panchami and the procession of Mahanirvani Akhara and Shri Shambhu Panchayati Atal Akhara is heading towards the Sangam ghat. Police personnel also offered prayers as Saints and Nagas headed towards Triveni Sangam for the ‘Amrit Snan’ on the occasion of Basant Panchami.

The Hindu festival of Basant Panchami, also known as Vasant Panchami, Shri Panchami, and Saraswati Panchami, is celebrated on the first day of spring and falls on the fifth day of the month of Magha.

It also heralds the start of Holi preparations, which take place forty days following the feast. Maa Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of learning, music, and the arts, is honoured throughout the festival.

The Uttar Pradesh government has made elaborate arrangements in Prayagraj for the occasion, which have been praised by devotees. Many have commended the government’s efforts in ensuring a smooth and safe experience for pilgrims.

To ensure a smooth experience for devotees during the Amrit Snan on Basant Panchami, the Kumbh Command and Control Centre is overseeing all operations for the ongoing Maha Kumbh 2025.

The centre is monitoring 25 sectors, 30 pontoon bridges, and sensitive barricades, with over 3,000 CCTV cameras deployed to cover both the city and the Mela area.

The Maha Kumbh 2025, which commenced on January 13, will continue until February 26. The event has already attracted millions of devotees from across the country and around the world and is expected to set new records for attendance and participation. (ANI)

Canada Imposes 25% Retaliatory Tariffs On US Goods

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that his government will impose 25 per cent tariffs on American goods worth USD 155 billion in retaliation for tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

Trudeau urged people of his country to purchase local products and consider spending vacations in the country, according to the Canada-based media channel, Cable Public Affairs Channel (CPAC).

Addressing a press conference on Saturday (local time), Trudeau stressed that Canada’s response will be “far-reaching” and will include everyday items like American beer, wine, bourbon fruits and fruit juices.

“Tonight I am announcing Canada will be responding to the US trade action with 25 per cent tariffs against 155 billion worth of American goods. This will include immediate tariffs on USD 30 billion worth of goods as of Tuesday followed by further tariffs on USD 125 billion worth of American products in 21 days time to allow Canadian companies and Supply chains to seek to find alternatives,” he said.

“Like, the American tariffs our response will also be far-reaching and include everyday items such as American beer, wine and bourbon fruits and fruit juices, including orange juice along with vegetables perfume, clothing and shoes. It’ll include major consumer products like household appliances furniture and sports equipment and materials like lumber and Plastics along with much much more and as part of our response we are considering with the provinces and territories, several non-tariff measures including some relating to critical minerals energy procurement and other partnerships,” Trudeau added.

The Canadian PM assured people of his country that they are all in this together and it is “Team Canada” at its best, according to CPAC. He said, “We will stand strong for Canada. We will stand strong to ensure our countries continue to be the best neighbors in the world. With all that said, I also want to speak directly to Canadians in this moment, I’m sure many of you are anxious but I want you to know we are all in this together, the Canadian government, Canadian businesses, Canadian organized labour Canadian Civil Society, Canada’s Premier and tens of millions of Canadians from coast to coast to coast are aligned and united. This is Team Canada at its best.”

He also urged people to check labels at the supermarket and buy Canadian-made products and visiting national and provincial parks in Canada.

Calling on people to choose Canada, he said, “Now is also the time to choose Canada. There are many ways for you to do your part, it might mean checking the labels at the supermarket and picking Canadian-made products. It might mean opting for Canadian rye over Kentucky bourbon or for going Florida orange juice altogether. It might mean changing your summer vacation plans to stay here in Canada and explore the many national and provincial parks, historical sites and tourist destinations our great country has to offer. It might mean doing all of these things or finding your own way to stand up for Canada. In this moment we must pull together because we love this country we pride ourselves on braving the cold during the long winter months. We don’t like to beat our chests but we’re always out there waving the maple leaf loudly and proudly to celebrate an Olympic gold medal.”

He said that Canada has critical minerals, reliable and affortable energy, stable democratic institutions, shared values and the natural resources US needs, according to CPAC. He said that Canada has all the ingredients to build a “booming and secure partnership” for the North American economy.

Trudeau said, “As I’ve said before, if president Trump wants to usher in a new golden age for the United States, the better path is to partner with Canada, not to punish us. Canada has critical minerals reliable and affordable energy, stable democratic institutions, shared values and the natural resources you need. Canada has the ingredients necessary to build a booming and secure partnership for the North American economy and we stand at the ready to work together. Let’s take a moment to talk about our shared border.”

“Our border is already safe and secure but there’s always more work to do. Less than one per cent of fentanyl, less than one per cent of illegal crossings into the United States come from Canada but hearing concerns from both Canadians and Americans including the American president himself, we’re taking action we launched a USD 1.3 billion border plan that is already showing results because we too are devastated by the scourge that is fentanyl, a drug that has torn apart communities and caused so much pain and torment for countless families across Canada just like in the United States a drug that we too want to see wiped from the face of this Earth, a drug whose traffickers must be punished. As neighbours we must work collaboratively to fix this, unfortunately the actions taken today by the White House split us apart instead of bringing us together,” he said.

During the press conference, Trudeau noted that US and Canada have worked together to solve pretty challenging issues over the years and he looked forward to doing that again.

When asked about his relationship with Trump as US President is not speaking to him, Trudeau responded, “This is a time where we’ve all remarked on just how active president Trump has been in engaging with a wide range of topics in his first weeks in office. As you all know, I’ve had many many good and substantive conversations with President Trump over the past months, where we’ve highlighted the work that we can do. Our ministers and officials have been engaging in many cases like today, multiple times a day with their counterparts to talk through these issues to move forward on areas of mutual concern. We will continue to engage and I will continue to be there to work with President Trump as we’ve worked together in the past. We’ve worked together to solve some pretty challenging issues over the years, I look forward to doing that again.”

Trudeau’s decision to slap tariffs on American goods came after US President Donald Trump announced on his social media platform Truth Social that he had imposed a 25 per cent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, as well as a 10 per cent tariff on goods from China, citing concerns over illegal immigration and drug smuggling, including fentanyl.

The US President has taken action under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), emphasizing the need to protect Americans and fulfil a campaign promise. Trump stated that the tariffs were implemented to protect US citizens from the threats posed by illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

“Today, I have implemented a 25 per cent Tariff on Imports from Mexico and Canada (10% on Canadian Energy), and a 10 per cent additional Tariff on China. This was done through the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) because of the major threat of illegal aliens and deadly drugs killing our Citizens, including fentanyl. We need to protect Americans, and it is my duty as President to ensure the safety of all. I made a promise on my Campaign to stop the flood of illegal aliens and drugs from pouring across our Borders, and Americans overwhelmingly voted in favour of it,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. (ANI)

Earthquake Of Magnitude 4.1 Strikes Arunachal

Earthquake Of 4.2 Magnitude Jolts Tibet

An earthquake of 4.2 magnitude on Richter Scale jolted Tibet on Sunday, National Center of Seismology reported.

As per NCS, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10km, making it susceptible to aftershocks.

In a post on X, NCS said, “EQ of M: 4.2, On: 02/02/2025 12:47:20 IST, Lat: 28.33 N, Long: 87.52 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Tibet.”

The region has been experiencing aftershocks of a series of earthquakes.

On January 30, the region experienced an earthquake of magnitude 4.1 km on the Richter Scale. The details of losses are yet to be known.

“EQ of M: 4.1, On: 30/01/2025 09:57:58 IST, Lat: 34.30 N, Long: 89.35 E, Depth: 100 Km, Location: Tibet,” the NCS said in a post on X.

On January 27, an earthquake of 4.5 magnitude on Richter Scale jolted Tibet.

The earthquake that occurred at a depth of 5 km, at 29.10 N latitude and 87.66 E longitude.

“EQ of M: 4.5, On: 27/01/2025 15:03:35 IST, Lat: 29.10 N, Long: 87.66 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Tibet,” NCS said in a post on X.

Shallow earthquakes like this are generally more dangerous than deep earthquakes. This is because shallow earthquakes release more energy closer to the surface, causing more intense shaking and damage.

The region has been plagued by earthquakes and aftershocks recently, as another earthquake of magnitude 4.4 struck the region on January 24.

The details of the same were shared by the NCS on X, “EQ of M: 4.4, On: 24/01/2025 11:29:22 IST, Lat: 28.76 N, Long: 87.62 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Tibet.”

The Tibetan Plateau is prone to earthquakes because of colliding tectonic plates.

Tibet and Nepal lie on a major geological fault line where the Indian tectonic plate pushes up into the Eurasian plate, forming the Himalayas, and earthquakes are a regular occurrence. The region is seismically active, causing tectonic uplifts that can grow strong enough to change the heights of the Himalayas’ peaks, as per Al Jazeera. (ANI)
