Rahul Unfit To Make Sound Political Decisions: Sambit Patra

BJP MP Sambit Patra on Friday took a swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, saying he’s unfit for sound political decisions and is resorting to appeasement after Karnataka’s 4 per cent minority quota approval in contracts.

Addressing a press conference, Patra said, “Rahul Gandhi is unfit to make sound political decisions, which is why he’s resorting to appeasement to further his political ambitions. As the scion of the Congress party, he knows very well that he will not be able to deliver politically, that is reason why he is using the crutches of appeasement to further his ambition in politics.”

He also accused Rahul Gandhi and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of eating into OBC reservations by approving a 4 per cent minority quota for Muslims in contracts.

“On the advice and aid of Rahul Gandhi, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah has eaten into the reservation which was due for the OBCs. This is not only unconstitutional but also a misadventure. This is the height of appeasement,” Patra said.

He also claimed that the Congress-led government in Karnataka approved a 4 per cent minority quota in contracts by reducing the quota set for OBCs.

“The Karnataka assembly has passed a bill amending the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (KTPP) Act, reserving 4 per cent of government contracts for Muslim contractors. This means that from now on, 4 per cent of civil contracts worth up to Rs 2 crore and goods and services contracts worth up to Rs 1 crore will be reserved for Muslim contractors. The Siddaramaiah government in Karnataka has given this reservation to Muslims, allegedly at the behest of Rahul Gandhi, effectively cutting the quota set for OBCs,” Patra said.

According to the amended Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (KTPP) Act, 4 percent of civil contracts valued at up to Rs 2 crore and goods and services contracts worth up to Rs 1 crore will be reserved for Minority contractors. (ANI)

Musk slams NYT After Trump Calls It Discredited Media

Tech billionaire Elon Musk slammed the New York Times on Friday in a post on X, hours after US President Donald Trump too questioned them for spreading false information about Musk’s visit to the Pentagon.

In a post on X, Musk also highlighted that the people who are leaking “maliciously false information” to the New York Times will be found.

“The New York Times is pure propaganda. Also, I look forward to the prosecutions of those at the Pentagon who are leaking maliciously false information to NYT. They will be found”, he wrote.

New York Times reported that the US Department of Defence is set to brief Elon Musk on plans for a potential war with China.

The publication said that the access would be a major expansion of Elon Musk’s government role and highlight his conflicts of interest. It said that the billionaire chief executive of both SpaceX and Tesla is a leading supplier to the Pentagon and has extensive financial interests in China.

According to the NYT report, which cited sources, Musk, who heads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), will be briefed on Friday by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and top US generals about US plans for a war with China.

The top-secret briefing on the China war plan has about 20 to 30 slides and details the United States’ plans to fight China if a war-like situation comes up, NYT reported. It includes “various options on what Chinese targets to hit, over what time period.”

However, Pentagon officials and President Trump denied that the session would be about military plans involving China, calling the report “fake”. “China will not even be mentioned or discussed,” Trump said in a social media post.

“The Fake News is at it again, this time the Failing New York Times. They said, incorrectly, that Elon Musk is going to the Pentagon tomorrow to be briefed on any potential “war with China.” How ridiculous?” China will not even be mentioned or discussed. How disgraceful it is that the discredited media can make up such lies. Anyway, the story is completely untrue!!!” Trump said on Truth Social. (ANI)

Delhi Min Parvesh Inspects Drainage In Capital, Suspends PWD Executive Engineer

Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma on Friday suspended an executive engineer (XEN) of the said department while the former was carrying out inspections of drainages in the national capital.

“The cleaning of drains is the responsibility of the PWD department, which is not happening. This is why I have ordered that the XEN here be suspended. All officers have been clearly told that if they do not work properly, action will be taken. We can’t leave Delhi, our capital, like this,” Verma told reporters.

The minister said that the entire system of Delhi had “broken down” in the last 10 years while adding that strict instructions have been issued to government officials that negligence would not be tolerated. Verma asserted that the newly elected government was not shying away from hard work and was out on the streets.

“There are several issues. We, too, have decided that we will not shy away from working hard. We will make these officers work. The entire system of Delhi had broken down, and it was almost on the brink of collapse. Those who have not worked for the last 10 years, we will make all such officers work. Our government is out on the ground. We have instructed the officers that negligence will not be tolerated at all,” Verma said.

Assuring that such issues would be resolved, he added that the entire system in Delhi would have to be changed. He said that government officials who have become “thick-skinned” would be made to work on the ground.

“The existing system will have to be changed, and we will resolve all issues. We will leave no stone unturned…In the last 10 years, officers have become thick-skinned; we will get rid of this. We are making all of them work on the ground. I, too, am working on the ground,” he added. (ANI)

The Bollywood Khan-federacy

This is the year of the Khans of Bollywood. Three of them, Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan have dominated it for over three decades and as they all turn sixty, are still on the top.

If Aamir Khan is to be believed, older than the other two by eight months, he says: “We still feel we are 20.”

Aamir turned 60 on March 14 and he heralded this in style by introducing to the media his latest ‘partner’. This is after two marriages that lasted 16 years each and several rumoured alliances. All this feeds the social media frenzy. But this was in the passing, amidst plans of Sitare Zameen Par that he promises will carry his iconic Taare Zameen Par beyond the starry heights of creativity. There is obvious interest in his Lahore 1947 about the Partition that year. He has recovered from the loss of image and money, from Lal Singh Chadha, a remake of Forrest Gump.

If the much-married “Mr Perfectionist” arouses wide interest in his ‘reel’ and real life, so does the single-wife faithful Shah Rukh Khan, the Badshah of Bollywood – titles that are given and acknowledged in all seriousness. And then, there is the never-married Salman Khan. He has lost out on matrimony as, his writer-father Salim Khan laments, the heroines he promotes simply leave once they achieve name and fame.

With Shah Rukh and Salman, you have to witness the audience frenzy in Jawan and Pathan when ‘Bhai’ comes to SRK’s rescue during a free-for-all fight in a distant land. You have to see the crowds outside their Mumbai homes on their birthdays or Eid festivals, who wait for hours to have their glimpse as they wave from their balconies. A recent housebreak that seriously injured Saif Ali Khan, often referred to as “the fourth Khan” caused concern and anger against the police.

This is the longest collective success, and still counting, that Indian cinema has witnessed since Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor. They, along with Ashok Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Raaj Kumar and many others had longer run in the last century.

Millions ride on the Khans. Each one heading their own production, besides freelancing, announces or executes ambitious projects meant for home and global audiences. They are definitely ageing, but unlike their peers, maintain well-chiselled bodies, with six-packs developed and shed as and when required for their roles and leave behind ‘heroes’ half their age.

Though by no means to be solely blamed, their rise and resilient stay at the top has consolidated the ‘star’ system. They are the cause and the consequence, unlike in the past, of much talk of cronyism and of ‘pedigree’. There is much justification either way – take the side you want.

The ‘first superstar’ (Rajesh Khanna) and ‘Jubilee Kumar’ (Rajendra Kumar) belong to the last century. But children and grandchildren of many – even fifth generation in the case of the Kapoors – are part of the Bollywood discourse. This is not surprising in tradition-bound India where children are promoted by their parents. Those with pedigree and push fall if they are not talented enough. The key difference is in opportunities for trial and error.

And yet, more and more ‘outsiders’ strive and the lucky ones succeed. The advent of the OTT (over the top) cinema has brought about an avalanche of newcomers in all branches of film-making. As actor Pratik Gandhi, a small-town stage and TV actor who has succeeded, has said: “OTT has disrupted the film industry in a good way.” Indeed.

But rest assured, despite the many duds they have delivered – and this is true of many other A-listers like Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn – the ‘system’ places Khans well above the others, even their heroines. The gender bias continues, so does the age-dictated fade out for the latter. The ethos remains patriarchal.

Their heroines have remained in their 20s, though. It is but a minor change from the times the hero, whatever his age, ran around the tree with a teenage girl. A bit of ‘maturing’ in Bollywood.

The star system has its seamy side. It has perpetuated hangers-on who are integral to a star’s entourage. The producer bears the burden. Again, the Khans are not solely responsible.

A significant part of the budget goes to the PR to ensure success. Called “a better businessman” by his critics, Aamir is known to set a big amount for PR and personally gets involved. PR gives the necessary push, but does not guarantee success.

Much has changed in the last three decades. The Khans are the link between the era of ‘matinee’ shows and single-screen cinema theatres, old technology of shooting, editing and processing a film giving way to everything digital. Less sweat, but more competition as more and more films are made, year after year, and reach new audiences.

There is more money flowing in to make films for a global market that is Indian diaspora-plus. Mercifully, the money does not come from smugglers and underworld dons, as it once did. It is better organised and the corporate sector, even the multinational corporations.

Yet, the risk factor remains as high as ever with hundreds that do not get theatre release and find themselves on the OTT or simply, into oblivion. As its glamour and pull rise, so does the risk. Gain or loss could be in billions.

The “100-crore club” that started with the Khans has the moolah spreading to the better organised South, especially the Telugu cinema. This has also meant that after RRR and Bahubali, the Raos and Reddys and many with tongue-twisting names gain national and international fame. Also, the traditional North-South divide that accepted mainly a heroine from the South but the hero essentially from the North has begun to disappear.

Political risk has increased, ostensibly because of the Khans’ faith. There is awe and honour, but speaking up in public has become increasingly difficult for the Khans. They get targeted by politicians and conservatives. Salman, the unadulterated, if naïve ‘Bhai’ and a charity-disbursing do-gooder, enjoys dancing at Ganesh festivals (his mother was born a Hindu) but has avoided speaking.

Time was when SRK and Aamir used to vent their views openly. But the pushback was tremendous, even if temporary. Supporting the Narmada project oustees caused disruption of Aamir’s Fanaa. Complaining of insecurity felt by the religious minorities led to systematic targeting of SRK’s two films, Pathan and Jawan. However, both turned out to be big hits, minting millions. Nothing beyond tense public discourse and political jibes came out of SRK’s son being imprisoned for alleged possession of drugs.

Obviously, superstardom comes at a price.

This decision follows the meeting of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Political Affairs Committee (PAC) meeting which was conducted at residence of AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal.

The party witnessed a major reshuffle after it lost its bastion national capital Delhi to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Saurabh Bharadwaj has been appointed as the chief of the party’s Delhi unit and Mehraj Malik has been appointed as the chief of the party’s J&K unit,” he said.

Aam Aadmi Party lost the recently concluded Delhi Legislative Assembly elections to BJP. The BJP won a historic mandate in Delhi polls, returning to power in the national capital after 27 years by ousting AAP. It secured a two-thirds majority bagging 48 out of 70 seats, while AAP’s tally saw a massive drop at 22 from its previous tally of 62. (ANI)

K’taka BJP MLA Patil Demands HM Hand Over Honeytrap Case To CBI

BJP MLA Basanagouda R Patil on Friday said that he has urged Home Minister Dr Parameshwara to hand over the honeytrap case to Central Bureau of Investigation to ensure a “fair and impartial” investigation.

In a post on X, Basanagouda said, “I have written a letter to the Home Minister @DrParameshwara to handover the alleged honeytrap of elected representatives to the CBI to ensure a fair & impartial investigation.”

Chaos prevailed in the Karnataka Assembly on Friday after the revelation of Karnataka Cooperation Minister KN Rajanna alleging a honey trap attempt was made on him.

BJP legislators raised loud slogans “down, down” as some members held CDs in their hands claiming they had proof of the alleged honey trap. They then stormed into the well of the house even as CM Siddaramaiah was speaking.

R Ashoka, BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly said, “It is not the issue of one party, it’s the biggest conspiracy against legislators who are working for the people and some are doing this (honey trap) with clear hidden agenda.”

Speaking in the house Chief Minister Siddaramaiah defended his government and said there was no question of protecting anyone in the Honey trap issue.

The BJP leaders were demanding a judicial inquiry, but CM Siddaramiah said that G Parmeshwara had already responded to the allegations made by KN Rajanna, and has set up an enquiry.

“It is the government’s responsibility to protect anyone in the case. According to the law, the guilty should be punished. The Home Minister replied that if Rajanna complained, a high -level probe would be investigated. Rajanna did not name anyone, action could be taken if he had named someone. There is no question of protecting anyone in the case,” the CM said.

Karnataka Cooperation Minister KN Rajanna on Thursday alleged a honey trap attempt was made on him and called on the State Home Minister G Parameshwara to investigate the matter.

During the budget session discussion, Vijayapura MLA Basanagouda Patil raised the issue, saying that an attempt had been made to trap the Cooperation Minister in the state. “This is a bad culture. People’s representatives are being blackmailed,” Basanagouda said.

Since his name was mentioned, KN Rajanna responded, acknowledging the allegations. “Many people say Karnataka has become a CD and pen drive factory. This is a serious allegation. It is being said that an influential minister from Tumakuru has been caught in a honey trap. The ones from Tumakuru are G Parameshwara and me,” Rajanna said in the Legislative Assembly.

Rajanna further said, “I will file a complaint regarding this. The Home Minister must investigate this matter.”

Responding to this in the assembly, Home Minister G Parameshwara said that he will order a high-level investigation into the allegation.

“If we have to uphold the dignity of the House, this issue must be concluded appropriately. If Rajanna submits a written request, based on that, I will order a high-level investigation. The truth must come out,” he said in the Assembly. (ANI)

Misa Bharti Slams Nitish For Talking During National Anthem

After Bihar CM Nitish Kumar was seen purportedly “talking” during the national anthem at a function in Patna, Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Misa Bharti on Friday raised questions on his mental and physical health and said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah should think in whose hands Bihar is.

“During the national anthem, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar did not look physically and mentally well. I want to ask PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah whether you found his mental state to be fine… He keeps insulting women, children every day… PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah should think in whose hands Bihar is,” Bharti told ANI.

Meanwhile, RJD leader Mukesh Raushan protested against the CM in Patna and demanded an apology from him.

“The CM should offer an apology for insulting the national anthem. He should be removed from the CM post and President’s Rule should be imposed in the state. The CM is unwell and he should be removed from the post. A case of treason should be filed against him,” Raushan said.

Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav shared a video in which the Bihar Chief Minister was seen talking and gesturing while the national anthem was played out during an event.

“At least please do not insult the national anthem, Hon’ble Chief Minister. You insult youth, students, women and elderly people every day. Sometimes they clap on Mahatma Gandhi’s martyrdom day and mock his martyrdom, and sometimes they clap on the national anthem!” the RJD leader said attaching a video of Nitish Kumar.

He alleged that the Bihar CM was “not mentally or physically stable” and called his condition a matter of great concern for the State.

“PS: Let me remind you that you are the Chief Minister of a big state. You are not mentally and physically stable even for a few seconds and your being in this position in such an unconscious state is a matter of great concern for the state. Do not insult Bihar like this again and again,” he added in a post on X.

In the purported video shared by RJD leaders, Nitish Kumar was seen tapping an official on the shoulder, appearing to engage him in conversation. At one point, he was seen smiling and folding his hands in a namaskar toward somebody in the audience, while the anthem was being played.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav said that India will not tolerate the disrespect of the national anthem. “Disrespect of the national anthem, India will not tolerate this. People of Bihar, is there still anything left?” Lalu Yadav posted on X in Hindi.

Assembly elections in Bihar are due in October this year. The Election Commission of India has not yet announced the dates of the polls. (ANI)

Canadian PM To Call For Snap Elections This Sunday

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is likely to ask Governor General Mary Simon to dissolve the parliament and call for a federal election on Sunday, CBC News reported.

This comes within a week after Mark Carney was sworn in as the Prime Minister after Justin Trudeau stepped down from the post.

If that happens, then elections are expected to be held on either April 28 or May 4, with the campaign expected to last between 36 and 50 days, the CBC report stated, citing sources.

Carney is betting his chances to return to power with a stable government against the backdrop of public opinion polls that have placed his Liberal Party ahead in the contest.

Carney told reporters, when asked about the election timing, that Governor General Mary Simon will be the first person to know.

“What’s clear is that in this time of crisis is that the government needs a strong and clear mandate. We’re offering a positive vision for the country, a vision of action,” Carney said.

According to CBC’s Poll Tracker, the Liberals led by Carney are leading with 37.7 per cent, compared to Poilievre’s Conservatives who stand just below that, at 37.4 per cent support.

Carney took the oath as Canadian PM on March 14 amid the soaring tensions over US President Donald Trump’s tariffs and threats against Canada. He succeeded Trudeau after the latter suffered a polling slump for Liberal Party and an internal revolt in the cabinet.

In his first remark after taking the oath as PM, Carney said in a post on X,

“Today, we’re building a government that meets the moment. Canadians expect action — and that’s what this team will deliver. A smaller, experienced cabinet that moves faster, secures our economy, and protects Canada’s future,” Carney said in a post on X.

“Right now, we’re building a government that will deliver what our country needs most. We’re going to protect Canadians during this crisis and build a stronger economy for the future,” Carney said.

Carney has been an outspoken proponent of retaliatory tariffs against US and has also rejected Trump’s repeated suggestion for Canada to become the 51st US state – stating that “America is not Canada.” (ANI)
