Oppo MLAs Hold Protest Outside M’rashtra Assembly

Opposition MLAs of Maharashtra held a protest outside the state assembly on Monday, alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Mahayuti government has not provided funds for welfare schemes in the state in the budget.

Speaking to ANI, Congress leader Aslam Shaikh said, “There were no discussions on the promises made by the state government during elections in the Budget… But they talked about fish and mutton, that nobody is even forced to buy…”

A day earlier, Maharashtra Finance and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar presented the state budget for the financial year 2025-26.

Presenting the budget, Pawar stated that a total outlay of Rs 36,000 crore had been proposed for the Mukhya Mantri Majhi Ladki Bahini Yojana scheme and further stated that financial benefits were being provided to 2 crore and 53 lakh beneficiary women under the scheme.

“The grant received from this scheme has been used by some women’s groups as seed capital for economic activities, and a special scheme is under consideration to further encourage such groups,” he said.

Pawar further stated that the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and Maharashtra Maritime Board were jointly developing Vadhavan Port in Palghar district, with a total cost of Rs 76,220 crore and 26 percent government participation.

“Vadhavan Port will create an annual cargo handling capacity of about 300 million metric tons. This will be three times the current capacity of Jawaharlal Nehru Port. Cargo transport is expected to start from the new port by 2030. As this port will be included in the top 10 ports in the world in terms of container handling, the state of Maharashtra will emerge as a superpower in maritime communication in the future,” he said.

Additionally, the Deputy CM mentioned that a third airport had been proposed for Mumbai near the Wadhwa port. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train station connected to the Samruddhi highway would be located near this port.

Giving information about the upcoming airport policy in Maharashtra, Ajit Pawar said that the development work of Shirdi Airport, worth Rs 1,367 crore, had been approved, and work was underway.

Shirdi Airport was granted major airport status in 2021, and night landing facilities will also be introduced soon. Furthermore, work on Ratnagiri Airport, worth Rs 147 crore, is in progress.

Along with this, the work for Belora Airport in Amravati has been completed, and passenger services are planned to start from March 31, 2025. Survey and exploration work for a new airport in Gadchiroli is also underway.

Pawar mentioned that necessary funds would be made available for the expansion of Akola Airport.

Giving information about other developments, he said that a grand memorial would be built in Mumbai on the occasion of the birth centenary of the late Prime Minister of India, Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Ajit Pawar said in the budget speech, “For the overall development of the Scheduled Caste communities, schemes such as the Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj Scholarship Scheme, Student Hostels, Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Swadhar Scheme, and Sahitya Ratna Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe Urban Settlement Improvement Scheme, among others, are being implemented.”

Many schemes were also being carried out through the Mahatma Phule Backward Classes Development Corporation, Sahitya Ratna Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe Development Corporation, and the Sant Rohidas Leather Industries and Leather Workers Development Corporation.

The provision for the Scheduled Caste Deployment Scheme has been increased by 42 percent this year compared to last year, Pawar said. (ANI)

Trudeau Exits Parliament With Chair In Hand

After resigning as Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau was captured exiting Parliament in a playful style — carrying a chair and with his tongue sticking out.

As per convention Canadian lawmakers are allowed to take their chairs with them when they leave Parliament, Brian Lilley, Political columnist for the Toronto Sun noted in a post on X.

“When any MP leaves the Commons, they are allowed to take their chair, their seat with them. I find it a great tradition, one that I support. That said, this is a weird photo of Trudeau leaving with his. Also, perhaps another sign of a looming election”, he wrote on X.

Trudeau had in his remarks while stepping down highlighted the ‘achievements’ of the Liberal Party over the past decade while looking towards the future, hours ahead of the announcement of his successor as the leader of his party as per CBC News.

In his speech at the Liberal Leadership Convention, Trudeau said, “I am damn proud of what we’ve done over these past 10 years for the middle class and the people working hard to join it.”

As the Liberal Party enters a new era, Trudeau told the crowd that “there is a responsibility to ensure that Canada stays the best country on Earth! In one of his last speeches as Liberal leader and Canada’s PM, he urged his supporters to keep fighting for Canada as hard as they can.

Trudeau resigned on January 6 as both- the Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party amid widespread anger over his government’s handling of a housing crisis and rising costs of living.

Prime Minister-Designate of Canada, Mark Carney was elected on Sunday to lead Canada’s Liberal Party into the next federal elections later this year.

Carney stepped up in this role as Canada seeks to counter its looming trade war with US President Donald Trump.

In a post on X, he said, “Thank you. Now let’s build a stronger Canada, together,” adding, “We’re strongest when we are united.” (ANI)

Immigration, Foreigners Bill’25 Introduced In LS

The Immigration and Foreigners Bill 2025 was introduced in the Lok Sabha today by the Union Home Minister of State, Nityanand Rai. The bill aims to modernize and consolidate India’s immigration laws.

He presented the bill on behalf of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Union MoS Nityanand Rai said, “On behalf of Amit Shah, I propose that the requirement of passport or travel document be settled in respect of persons entering and exiting India, certain powers be granted to the Central Government and to regulate matters related to foreigners including requirement of visa and registration and permission be given to establish a bill dealing with matters connected or incidental to them.”

Congress MP Manish Tewari from Chandigarh opposed the bill, claiming that it violates the “multiple fundamental rights” under the Constitution of India.

He said, “Under 72(2) of the rules of business of the Lok Sabha, I rise to oppose the Immigration and Foreigners Bill. Rule 72(1) of the rules of procedure and conduct of business of the Lok Sabha contemplates two situations. One is opposition to a bill simplicities and second on opposition to a bill on the grounds of legislative incompetence. This is a violation of fundamental rights on multiple counts… It violates multiple fundamental rights under the Constitution of India.”

TMC MP Sougata Roy also opposed the Immigration and Foreigners Bill 2025. He said, “I beg to oppose the Immigration and Foreigners Bill. There are already 4 bills in the country for the entry and exit of foreigners…”

This Bill gives the Central government certain powers to provide for the requirement of passports or other travel documents in respect of persons entering into and exiting from India and for regulating matters related to foreigners, including the requirement of visa and registration and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

The second part of the budget session of Parliament began on Monday and will continue till April 4. (ANI)

DDLJ – The East Side Story!

The Empire Strikes Back! It has, on horseback and with guns, through trade, political protests and with migrants – legal or otherwise – swarming the land of their erstwhile masters. But on a railroad with romance and music?

British Railways, the world’s oldest rail network, is partnering Dilwale Dulhaniyan Le Jayenge – DDLJ for short – (Bravehearts Will Win the Bride). The 30-year-old Indian film is running uninterrupted for as many years, setting a world record for screening at a single cinema theatre.  Both are creating drama, literally, around it.

It’s double-nostalgia. Details later – first, the history.

Britain began laying rail tracks on their island in 1825, and within a decade, the East India Company began moving goods in 1835. The efforts to consolidate hold through commuting across its “Jewel in the Crown” began in 1853 at Bori Bunder with Asia’s oldest railway station. Named Victoria Terminus (VT) after then-Queen, it is now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, after the 17th century Maratha king. But ask an oldie – the name VT continues.

India’s rail journey began in Bombay. Coincidentally, 50 years later, it also screened Raja Harishchandra, becoming the birthplace of Indian Cinema. Now, Bombay-bred cinema is called Bollywood, to rhyme with Hollywood. Bombay is now Mumbai.

But like Bori Bunder and VT, the multiple changes in names do not matter. Like DDLJ, the ‘Bride’ is the same one that is pursued by the ‘Bravehearts’. As both explore the world market, Indian Railways are busy transporting a whopping 24 million commuters daily.

As they hark back two centuries of the rail, the British are courting the romance-on-the-rail with DDLJ, released in October 1995, still being screened at Maratha Mandir. This cinema theatre in the heart of Mumbai is a single screen (in this age of small multiplexes) with a 1,000 seat capacity. No long queues of wannabe spectators outside and tickets are not sold in ‘black’. That was the norm before the era of OTT (over-the-top) entertainment on home screens arrived. The sole yesteryear-style Matinee show continues to get dedicated DDLJ lovers, day after day.

What draws the viewers to DDLJ is the romance between Shah Rukh Khan (SRK), then 29, and a nubile Kajol, then all of 20. He has since earned the epitaph of King of Bollywood, and the lass, exuding raw, coltish charm, has become one of India’s finest actors.

In this jet-age when millions tour abroad, the DDLJ viewers are still stuck on this rail-and-road show traversing Europe that captures the scenic beauty of the Alps, Paris and more with the two prancing, singing and engaging in their respective first love – flirty but “within Indian limits”.

Mind you! They are two British-Indian kids who fall in love and decide not to rebel but get married only if their parents bless. That ‘Indian-ness’ would raise chuckles, even heckles, today! It may not happen among most Indian émigré families in the West, where the generation gap is wide. But it depicts an Indian ethos, however unrealistic it may sound in the present century. Arguably, though, the story in India remains unchanged for millions of young. You can say it is manipulated, but it is still the norm. The unstated sentiment was, and remains, that this is what they would like their children to be: well-educated but Indian to the core.

The significant thing is that audiences lapped up the mix of tradition and modernism dished out by Aditya Chopra, the debutante director.

DDLJ’s lead character Raj gave Shah Rukh the platform to leap into big-time showbiz, from a struggling actor to a one-man show. With his unconventional looks, nobody expected him to make such an impact on audiences as the romantic hero. It also launched Kajol, not conventionally good-looking either, into the big league.

ALSO READ: Bobby Remains Fascinating @ Fifty

DDLJ is a prime example of Indian cinema’s commercial success, also of its ‘soft’ diplomacy the government only backs, but unofficially. That makes it an entrepreneurial success.

In the hands of Aditya Chopra, who was all of 23 then, this very predictable plot was transformed into a first-rate entertainer. He is among the top ranking film-makers in Bollywood today.

Somewhere during the European gallivanting with Kajol comes SRK’s famous line to cheer up the girl who is upset at missing the train. “Bade bade deshon mein aisi chhoti chhoti baatein hoti rehti hain” (Such minor things happen in big countries). It was delivered by United States President Barack Obama during his 2015 India visit.

Obama should know since he was the one, albeit cinematically, a young couple, coincidentally, played by SRK and Kajol after much trouble, in another film, My Name is Khan (2012). SRK insists, “I am not a terrorist”. And Obama’s character cheerfully approves.

Incidentally, My Name is Khan was made by Karan Johar, who assisted Aditya Chopra in DDLJ and had a walk-on part as Shah Rukh’s buddy. One of the most sought-after directors in Bollywood, his blockbusters include Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kal Ho Naa Ho.

All this eludes an explanation on the ‘romance’ between the British Rail and DDLJ. Surely, this is not the only Indian film showing their train, nor are the Indians the only ones who have filmed their trains and stations. One is that the month-long European journey scenes and songs, besides being filmed in Saanen, Montbovon and Gstaad, begin and end in England at locations including Trafalgar Square, King’s Cross railway station and Angel Underground station.

This is not easy to explain – till it happens and is out for the people to see and savour.

What we know so far is that British Railway and Yash Raj Films have partnered for a UK-India cultural event. As part of the celebrations, YRF will bring ‘Come Fall in Love — the DDLJ musical’, a stage adaptation of the iconic film, to the UK.

The musical, just like the film, will be directed by Aditya Chopra. It will premiere at the Manchester Opera House on May 29 and go on till June 21, the British Railway and YRF announced the campaign as part of the Valentine’s Day celebrations.

Executive Director of Railway 200, Suzanne Donnelly, expressed delight about the association and said they were thrilled to collaborate with Yash Raj Films to celebrate the “enduring romance of train travel and the connections it fosters across the globe”.

The production will feature an original score, complete with 18 English songs. The core team of CFIL is truly an amalgamation of East Meets West! The music is by Vishal Dadlani and Sheykhar Ravjiani, and the book and lyrics are by Nell Benjamin (Mean Girls, Legally Blonde). The creative team also includes choreographer Rob Ashford (Disney’s Frozen), co-choreographer for Indian dances Shruti Merchant (Taj Express), scenic designer Derek McLane (Moulin Rouge! The Musical), and casting director David Grindrod for Grindrod Burton Casting.

“It is a true romantic comedy. The script is incredibly funny and full of heart and what l love most is how it shows two cultures, each staying true to their roots while embracing something bigger than themselves. The music has this unbelievable mix of musical theatre and Punjabi pop, something I’ve never seen done on stage,” Day says, adding: “The show is about family, love, empathy, and fighting for what truly matters. True honest love! Especially in today’s world, that message feels more relevant than ever.” The musical will conclude on June 21.

With apologies to Mr Mark Twain: Will the East and West meet here?

In the first-look motion poster of ‘Maa,’ Kajol’s character is seen holding her daughter in a protective hug. The actress’s face and hands were covered with cuts and wounds, as shown in the poster.

The background suggested a fight between good and evil.

While sharing the first-look poster and release date of the film, Kajol wrote,

Zelenskyy In Saudi Arabia For Peace Talks, US Meeting Follows

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah on Monday, holding discussions focused on securing a lasting peace in Ukraine and strengthening bilateral economic ties, Al Jazeera reported.

Following the meeting, Zelenskyy took to social media, expressing gratitude for the Crown Prince’s support and Saudi Arabia’s role in diplomatic efforts.

“I had a good meeting with Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman. I am grateful for his wise perspective on global affairs and support for Ukraine. It was especially important to hear words of confidence in Ukraine’s future,” Zelenskyy wrote on X (formerly Twitter). He emphasised that the discussions covered key bilateral issues as well as cooperation with international partners, acknowledging the Crown Prince’s efforts in facilitating peace.

Ukraine’s delegation remains in Jeddah, where they are set to meet with US officials on March 11.

According to Zelenskyy, the talks will be fully constructive, and Ukraine hopes for tangible progress. The Ukrainian president highlighted that his discussions with the Crown Prince included detailed conversations on the necessary steps to end the war and secure a reliable peace, with a particular focus on the release of prisoners and the return of Ukrainian children. He also underscored the importance of security guarantees in any future agreements.

Zelenskyy noted Saudi Arabia’s willingness to expand economic cooperation and invest in Ukraine, particularly in security, energy, and infrastructure sectors. “We share a common vision for economic development and interaction, particularly regarding Ukraine’s reconstruction,” he stated, adding that Saudi Arabia’s ambitious economic strategy presents opportunities for collaboration.

The visit comes as Ukraine faces mounting challenges on the battlefield. Russian forces have intensified their offensive in the Kursk region, applying pressure on Ukrainian troops who had initially made gains inside Russian territory last August. Ukrainian forces have been forced to pull back from some positions, with Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskii confirming reinforcements were being sent to stabilise the situation.

Meanwhile, tensions remain high between Kyiv and Washington following a heated Oval Office exchange between Zelenskyy and former US President Donald Trump on February 28. The fallout from that meeting led to the suspension of US military aid to Ukraine, adding further strain to Ukraine’s defence strategy.

US Secretary of State Mark Rubio arrived in Jeddah shortly after Zelenskyy, leading a high-level delegation that includes National Security Adviser Mike Waltz. Speaking to reporters before the meeting, Rubio emphasised that Washington expects Ukraine to demonstrate its commitment to achieving peace, while also making difficult decisions.

The Kremlin has closely monitored the developments, with Russian spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stating that Ukraine must decide whether it genuinely wants peace. “What is important here is what the United States expects. And at various levels, you and I have repeatedly heard statements that the United States is waiting for a demonstration of the Ukrainians’ desire for peace,” Peskov said. He stressed that the responsibility lies with Kyiv to show whether it is willing to engage in meaningful negotiations.

Back on the battlefield, Ukrainian troops are facing intensified Russian advances. Russian military bloggers claim that Russian forces have cleared significant territory in the Kursk region in just a few days, marking a dramatic shift in the conflict. Reports suggest Ukrainian forces have been forced into defensive positions, with concerns rising over the possibility of encirclement, Al Jazeera reported.

However, Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskii dismissed fears of entrapment, stating, “Currently, there is no threat of encirclement of our units in the Kursk region.” He acknowledged, however, that Ukrainian troops were repositioning to more defensible lines in response to mounting Russian pressure.

Ukraine’s military has continued to retaliate with drone strikes targeting Russian infrastructure, including oil refineries that supply Russian military operations. “The defence forces continue to take all measures to undermine the military-economic potential of the Russian occupiers and force the Russian Federation to stop its armed aggression against Ukraine,” the Ukrainian military said in a statement.

The Russian Defence Ministry, however, claimed its air defences intercepted two Ukrainian drones over the Belgorod and Kursk regions, reiterating Moscow’s position that Ukraine’s attacks do not significantly impact Russian military operations. (ANI)

Ranya Rao Gold Smuggling: K’taka CM Orders Probe Into IPS Officer

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered a probe into the allegations of ‘protocol violations’ at the Bengaluru International Airport and the alleged role of senior IPS officer Ramachandra Rao in the gold smuggling case linked to actress Ranya Rao.

Karnataka’s Additional Chief Secretary, Gaurav Gupta, has been appointed as the investigating officer in this case. The Chief Minister has instructed that the report be submitted within a week.

It is alleged that actress Ranya Rao misused her name and the courtesy services offered to her to “evade” checks at airports and conduct “illegal” activities.

The official order read, “As it has been reported in the media and newspapers for the past one week that the actress Mrs. Ranya Rao was illegally transporting gold bullion from Dubai to Bangalore when she was arrested by the officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence. Also, the etiquettes given to the top officials at the airports were given to their father by the Director General of Police of the State IPS Group, the Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation, Dr K Ramachandra Rao, IPS.”

“It is reported that Mrs Rao has misused her name and the courtesy services offered to her to evade checks at airports and conduct illegal activities. Therefore, the Government considers it necessary to investigate the facts and circumstances leading to the availment of courtesy facilities and the role of Shri Ramachandra Rao, IPS, Director General of Police, State IPS Squad, Managing Director, Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Corporation, in this case,” it said.

Investigating officer Gaurav Gupta will investigate the facts and circumstances leading to the availment of the courtesy facilities and the role of IPS Rao in this case.

The order read, “In view of the points outlined in the proposal, Mr. Gaurav Gupta, Bha.A.Se. Additional Chief Secretary to the Government, Government of Karnataka Bangalore has been appointed as the investigating officer to investigate the facts and circumstances leading to the availment of the courtesy facilities and the role of Director General of Police, State IPS Squad, Managing Director, Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Corporation Shri Ramachandra Rao, IPS in this case. Investigators will begin an investigation immediately, and file an investigation report.”

Actress Ranya Rao was arrested on March 3 by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at Kempegowda International Airport (KIAD) in Bengaluru for allegedly smuggling 14.8 kilograms of gold from Dubai.

Ranya, the stepdaughter of DGP K Ramachandra Rao, was produced before a special court judge on the evening of March 4 for financial offences.

On March 4, Ranya Rao was produced before a special court for financial offences and was remanded to judicial custody until March 18.

Prior to her transfer to custody, she underwent a medical examination at Bowring Hospital in Bengaluru. During her questioning, Rao claimed that her trip to Dubai was for business purposes. However, authorities suspect that her visit was linked to the illegal importation of gold.

Then she was remanded to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) custody until March 10.

The Economic Offences Court in Bengaluru allowed the actress to meet her advocate for half an hour each day during her 3-day DRI custody.

The court, presided over by Justice Vishwanath C Gowdar, directed the DRI to provide Rao with essentials like food and a bed during her custody and cautioned the DRI against harsh treatment during the investigation. (ANI)

‘Keeping all my options open’: Rohit Sharma On Playing 2027 ODI World Cup

Following his team’s ICC Champions Trophy win, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma said that he is keeping all his options open for his cricketing career in future and added that he cannot really commit to being a part of 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup squad, ICC Cricket reported.

After leading his team to two back-to-back white-ball titles, the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and this year’s ICC Champions Trophy, the Hitman could achieve everything in white-ball cricket after securing the next 50-over World Cup, which will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

After missing out on the tournament as a youngster in 2011, Rohit played the 50-over World Cup as a player in 2015 and as a vice-captain in the 2019 edition, achieving a semifinal finish in both despite his fine contributions with the bat, including chart-topping 648 runs with five centuries and a half-century six years back. While Rohit had his best chance to win the game’s ultimate prize in India as a captain, he had to face one of the most heartbreaking losses of his career, to Australia in the final at Ahmedabad after a dominant 10-match winning streak.

When the next tournament takes place in October-November 2027, Rohit will be 40 years of age. While it is likely that ageing and consequent drop in reflexes, form and reaction time could keep him out of the team, the 37-year-old has earned his right to decide his future and play one more World Cup both for his team and himself.

“It is very hard to say that right now,” he said on the prospect of taking part in the showcase in two years’ time as quoted by ICC,

“But I am keeping all my options open. I want to see how well I am playing. Right now, I am playing really, really well, and I am enjoying everything I’m doing with this team, and the team is enjoying my company as well, which is nice.”

“I cannot really say 2027, because it is too far, but I am keeping all my options open,” he concluded his point.

Having led India to victory in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 – and been named Player of the Match in the final – Rohit had told a press conference that rumours that he was planning to retire were unfounded.

He also elaborated on what it is about the current India squad that keeps him wanting to be part of it, despite his 38th birthday approaching next month.

“As long as I am enjoying the sport, I am enjoying playing the game, doing what I am doing for this team, I will continue to play,” he said.

“It is something that really makes me happy. There are a lot of things involved, there is so much pride, and the way this team is playing, I do not want to leave this team.”

“The way we are playing at this point in time, there is so much joy, so much fun to play with all of them,” he concluded.

Hitman finished the 2025 Champions Trophy with 180 runs in five matches at an average of 36.00 and a strike rate of 100.00, with the best score of 76. (ANI)
