Sports Ministry Lifts Ban On Wrestling Federation Of India

The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports lifted the suspension on the Wrestling Federation of India, restoring its recognition as a National Sports Federation (NSF) for the sport.

The Sports Ministry had suspended the WFI body after the newly elected WFI president Sanjay Singh announced the hosting of the U-15 and U-20 nationals at Nandini Nagar in the Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh in December 2023.

Starting from 2023, Several ace wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia spearheaded protests against WFI and its former president Brij Bhushan Singh, alleging him of sexual assault.

In August 2023, United World Wrestling (UWW) put a ban on WFI as it failed to organise elections within a stipulated time following accusations of sexual harassment and protests against ex-president Brij Bhushan Singh by top wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik. An ad hoc committee by the International Olympic Association (IOA) was put in place.

In late December 2023, elections were held and Sanjay Singh was elected as the new president of WFI. However, the wrestlers protested against his election, saying he was an aide of ex-president Brij Bhushan. Days after the elections, the Ministry suspended the federation again, a decision that came after Sanjay had announced the hosting of the U-15 and U-20 nationals at Nandini Nagar in the Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh by the end of the year. An ad-hoc committee of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) was put in place once again to handle the day-to-day affairs of the federation.

The ad-hoc committee was dissolved in March 2024 after IOA said that there was no need for the body following the lifting of the ban on the federation by United World Wrestling (UWW) and the successful completion of selection trials for future competitions. UWW lifted the ban on WFI in February last year with immediate effect. (ANI)

US Stocks Plunges, Bitcoin Stumble As Fear Grows Following Trump’s ‘Recession’ Remarks

US stocks tumbled, bitcoin plunged, and the Wall Street fear gauge reached its highest level as concerns regarding US President Donald Trump’s economic policy resulted in widespread market selloff on Monday, CNN reported.

The rout on Wall Street began early, with all three major indexes opening in the red. US stocks witnessed a drop throughout the day, and despite a brief afternoon rally, they closed in the red.

The Dow closed lower by 890 points, pulling back from a loss of over 1,100 points at one point. The broader S&P 500 also plunged, witnessing a drop of 2.7 per cent, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite reduced by 4 per cent.

The Nasdaq posted its biggest single-day drop since September 2022. In addition, the Dow and S&P 500 each posted their worst day of the year.

The rout extended a miserable month for markets, which have seen all three major indexes losing their gains since the US presidential election in November.

The widespread selloff was majorly triggered due to concerns regarding the effect of Trump’s tariff policy.

In an interview that aired on Sunday, Trump refused to rule out the possibility of a recession, and said that the US economy would see “a period of transition”. He made these remarks during an interview on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures With Maria Bartiromo”.

When asked whether he expected a recession this year, Trump responded, “I hate to predict things like that. There is a period of transition because what we’re doing is very big.”

Tech stocks led the selloff, which weighed on the S&P 500 and dragged the Nasdaq into correction territory. The S&P 500 closed down at 8.6 per cent from its record high on February 19. Tech stocks – Alphabet (GOOG), Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), Meta (META), Microsoft (MSFT), Nvidia (NVDA), and Tesla (TSLA) were all in the red on Monday.

Anthony Saglimbene, chief market strategist at Ameriprise, said, “President Trump’s comments not necessarily taking a recession off the table unnerved investors who were already unnerved.”

Meanwhile, the White House on Monday announced that Donald Trump was set to spark “historic” growth during his second term as US President. In a statement, White House spokesman Kush Desai said, “Since President Trump was elected, industry leaders have responded to President Trump’s America First economic agenda of tariffs, deregulation, and the unleashing of American energy with trillions in investment commitments that will create thousands of new jobs.”

Desai further said, “President Trump delivered historic job, wage, and investment growth in his first term, and is set to do so again in his second term.”

Tesla closed down 15.4 per cent on Monday. Shares of Tesla witnessed a rise following the US presidential election in November. However, Tesla’s stock is down almost 45 per cent this year. In the recent weeks, the shares of the company have been hit amid protests against Tesla CEO Elon Musk for his oversized role in the Trump administration, as well as reduced sales in Europe.

Shares of Nvidia witnessed a drop of five per cent, and Palantir (PLTR), another star of the artificial intelligence trade, reduced by 10 per cent. The VIX, Wall Street’s fear gauge, increased to its highest level this year. ” Bitcoin dropped to around USD 78,000 on Monday — its lowest level since November — amid a selloff of risky assets.

So far this month, stocks have been hit amid uncertainty around Trump’s tariff policy. The S&P 500 was reduced by 3.1 per cent last week, posting its worst week since September. Yardeni Research President Ed Yardeni said, “The stock market is losing its confidence in the Trump 2.0 policies.”

Trump had threatened to enact tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico. However, he later announced that the tariffs would come into effect in April. He doubled the tariff on all Chinese imports from 10 per cent to 20 per cent, and a 25 per cent tariff on all steel and aluminium imports is set to be implemented on March 12.

Furthermore, Trump threatened last week to impose 250 per cent tariff on Canadian dairy products and a “tremendously high” tariff on its lumber. Speaking to Fox News, he said that tariffs may still “go up as time goes by.”

The yield on the 10-year US Treasury fell to 4.225 per cent as investors snapped up government bonds, indicating concerns regarding uncertainty and the economy’s growth. Looking ahead this week, investors will be focused on monthly inflation data expected on Wednesday and Thursday to gauge whether inflation remained stubborn in February. A recession is commonly defined by two consecutive negative quarters of gross domestic product growth. (ANI)

Designers Shivan & Narresh Apologize For Gulmarg Event

Fashion designers Shivan and Narresh issued a public apology on Monday for hosting a fashion event in Gulmarg during the holy month of Ramzan.

The event sparked widespread criticism from Jammu and Kashmir political leaders, who condemned the show as a direct attack on the state’s culture.

In a statement on their X handle, Shivan and Narresh expressed deep regret for any harm their presentation caused.

“We deeply regret any hurt caused by our recent presentation in Gulmarg during the holy month of Ramadan. Our sole intention was to celebrate creativity and the ski & apres-ski lifestyle, without any desire to offend anyone or any religious sentiments,” they posted on X.

The designers acknowledged the community’s concerns and promised to be more mindful and respectful in the future.

They continued, “Respect for all cultures and traditions is at our heart, and we acknowledge the concerns raised. We sincerely apologize for any unintended discomfort and appreciate the feedback from our community. We remain committed to being more mindful and respectful.”

The controversy surrounding the fashion event has been widely condemned by Jammu & Kashmir politicians, including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who ordered an inquiry into the matter.

J-K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday condemned the Gulmarg fashion show, emphasising that it should not have been conducted, particularly during the month of Ramzan.

Speaking in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, Chief Minister Abdullah said, “A private party was organised, a fashion show was organized there. From what I saw, it should not have been organised at any time of the year, let alone the month of Ramzan.”

Abdullah clarified that the event was a private party organized without government permission and instructed authorities to take action if necessary.

“It was a private party and there was no government involvement, no permission was taken from us. Instructions have been given that if anything against the law has happened then action should be taken. If necessary, it should be handed over to the police, the police will investigate it,” Chief Minister Abdullah said.

Other politicians, including Jammu and Kashmir Awami Ittehad Party MLA Khurshid Ahmad Sheikh and National Conference MLA Tanvir Sadiq, also denounced the event as a direct attack on the state’s culture.

“During Ramzan time, organising such an event is shameful, this is a direct attack on our culture. We condemn this. We want CM to take the strictest action against this,” Ahmad Sheikh said.

Tanvir Sadiq, a Member of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), voiced his disapproval of the Gulmarg fashion show.

Speaking to ANI, Sadiq said, “It should not have happened. Jammu and Kashmir is a place of Sufi saints… even in normal circumstances, semi-nude shows should not take place in Jammu and Kashmir, this is not acceptable.”

Jammu and Kashmir Minister Sakina Itoo also condemned the Gulmarg fashion show, saying, what happened in Gulmarg is wrong and it should not have happened.

“What happened was not supposed to happen during Ramzan month. What happened in Gulmarg is wrong and it should not have happened,” Sakina Itoo said. (ANI)

MP: Cong Protests Over Farmers’ Issues, Police Use Water Cannons

Madhya Pradesh Congress workers staged a massive protest over issues related to farmers in state capital Bhopal on Monday.

State Congress President Jitu Patwari, Leader of Opposition (LoP) Umang Singhar, MLA Sachin Yadav and several other party workers participated in the protest, held at Rang Mahal square in the state capital. The crowd was heading to gheraoed the state assembly and the police used water cannons to disperse the crowd of the party workers.

Congress chief Patwari told reporters, “It is the responsibility of the Congress party to protest against the BJP who made promises to women, farmers and youth of the state. Today, we held this protest with a feeling that the state government should provide Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs 3100 a quintal for rice, Rs 2700 a quintal for wheat and Rs 6000 a quintal. The Union Agriculture Minister hails from the state but he does not talk about MSP.”

The Congress party has decided that if rice and wheat procurement is not done according to the promises made then, the party will reach each and every Mandi and hold protests with the farmers, he added.

The Congress further said, “State Congress’s farmers wing will continue this movement in every mandi where crop procurement takes place in the state for the next two months.”

LoP Umang Singhar said that the Congress party is with the farmers and the fight will last from road to the state assembly in the interest of the farmers.

“I would like to ask the Kisan Sangh (linked to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) who seek votes of farmers in favour of BJP during elections, but why the Kisan Sangh has not fulfilled the promise even after one year from their government. Kisan Sangh staged fake protests. But the Congress is with the farmers and will fight from the road to the house for them,” Singhar said.

Former state minister and Congress MLA Sachin Yadav said they have always worked to fight for the rights of the farmers.

“The BJP had promised in its Sankalp Patra that after the formation of the government, wheat will be procured at the rate of Rs 2700 a quintal and rice at Rs 3100 a quintal. But even after so long of government formation, the government has not fulfilled the promise it had made. Therefore, today we have staged a protest about the outrage of the farmers against the government. We have put forward our demands, but the government is so scared that it does not want to listen to us and the administration is using the police water cannons to suppress us,” Yadav said.

“If the Congress workers have to shed their blood for farmers then, the congressmen will not lag behind,” he added. (ANI)

Mahayuti Uddhav Thackeray

Nothing Special For Farmers: Uddhav Slams M’rashtra Budget

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Monday slammed the Maharashtra Budget presented by the government, calling it a “budget of jumla” (rhetoric).

Thackeray criticized the budget for lacking concrete benefits for farmers and failing to deliver on the promised Rs 2100 under the Ladki Behen Yojana. He alleged that the government’s promises were merely election gimmicks.

“The Budget presented by the Government today is a Budget of ‘jumla’. The budget is exactly like this government. It has nothing special for farmers, it doesn’t provide the Rs 2100 promised by the government under Ladki Behen Yojana. All promises of this government were just to win elections…,” Thackeray told reporters here.

Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar presented the 2025-26 Budget on Monday, keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resolve to make India a developed nation by 2047.

The Maharashtra government has announced a total expenditure of Rs 7.20 lakh crore for the 2025-26 fiscal year. The estimated revenue receipts stand at Rs 5,60,964 crore, while the revenue expenditure is projected at Rs 6,06,855 crore.

He also expressed gratitude for the 75 years of the Indian Constitution.

He also announced the “Maharashtra Tax, Interest, Penalty or Delayed Fee (Public Sector Companies) Debt Settlement Act, 2025,” which will be in effect until December 31, 2025, the release said.

Key Features of the Budget include: The fiscal deficit is maintained below 3 percent of the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), and the revenue deficit has remained below 1 percent of the GSDP. Efforts to increase the development rate through capital expenditures aim to stimulate the development cycle.

The target is to increase the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s economy to USD 300 billion by 2030 and USD 1.5 trillion by 2047. A new industrial policy will be formulated to attract investments through “Make in Maharashtra,” targeting Rs 40 lakh crore investment and creating 50 lakh jobs in the next 5 years.

The agriculture sector’s growth rate improved to 8.7 percent in 2024-25, and further steps will be taken to boost farmers’ income, increase agricultural production, and provide infrastructure like solar energy for irrigation and electricity.

The government will make special efforts to secure more central funds for the state through centrally sponsored schemes.

The state’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue is expected to grow by 12-14 per cent annually. Innovative measures such as public asset monetization, financing from international financial institutions, and project streamlining will be taken to ensure smooth fund availability for ambitious schemes.
