Nepal’s Ex-PM Accuses Former King Of Inciting Violence

Nepal’s former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has accused former King Gyanendra Shah of inciting violence on Friday, which claimed lives of two people. He urged government to take actions against the former monarchy.

Speaking exclusively to ANI, Dahal, who toured the vandalized office of the Socialist front on Saturday morning, called on the government to limit the freedom given to the former King.

“Now it has become crystal clear that Gyanendra Shah is behind all these acts. Gyanendra Shah’s intent is culpable. It was seen in the past as well as seen now. Now is the time that government take a strict action, investigation should be conducted to bring the criminals to justice and Gyanendra Shah now cannot be spared- given absolute freedom, it is unacceptable for the Nepali citizens and the government should

be serious on this issue,” Dahal told ANI.

Further adding, Dahal, also the chairman of the opposition CPN- Maoist Center, also accused government of falling short in preparations for the pro-monarch protest.

“First thing is lack of preparation from the Government and the Police. After reporting the start of attack it took about 45 minutes is paradoxical. It has been accepted by the security bodies on Friday itself have accepted that they hadn’t expected this level of violence but in the heart of the capital, in accessibility of the security at the required time, this kind of vandalism, criminally intended, indiscreet activity needs serious review from the government and should make preparations to avoid similar incidents in future,” Dahal told ANI.

Nepal’s Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak also inspected the violence hit areas on Saturday morning taking stock of the situation. Minister Lekhak denied to make any statement to media about the further actions that the government will be taking further against those involved in arson and vandalism on Friday.

Two people – one protestor and a media person lost their lives on Friday’s violent pro-monarch protest which by the end of the day resulted in imposition of curfew and deployment of the Nepal Army. The violent clash which started the ramming of vehicle breaking a barrage of Police by Durga Prasai, a pro-monarch businessman resulted in arson, stone pelting and firing of the bullets by police as it progressed. The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), a right-wing pro-monarchist, also the fifth largest party in parliament had supported the protest.

Former King Gyanendra Shah also had held interaction with Prasain within this week as the protest plans were announced. Sources say that the government might also indict Shah for his involvement in instigating the violence of Friday.

“My children’s are in state of terror; they’re searching for favorable environment to continue with their studies. They’re timely consoling each other over the call. We are in state of fear; how will we be able to attend the exams and are worried about it,” Nirmala Karki, one of the shopkeeper who operates a shop near the point of clash of Friday told ANI.

Karki further added, “Incidents as such should not be repeated. There should be a peaceful demonstration,

there should be understanding amongst all. These sort of situations aren’t good; things slowly are turning dangerous. It is the public who have to face the consequences, it is the lives of people which has been claimed, property of citizens has been damaged. They’re the one who are in the powerful positions and public aren’t subjected to face the hardships.”

On Friday, the police arrested 17 people including senior vice-chairman of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party Rabindra Mishra, General Secretary Dhawal Sumsher Rana, pro-monarchy activists like Swagat Nepal, Shepherd Limbu and Santosh Tamang as well some other leaders for instigating violence during Friday’s pro-monarchy demonstrations that led to deaths, vandalism of private properties and arson.

The police has also kept the chief coordinator of pro-royalist movement, Nawaraj Subedi, under house arrest. Meanwhile, security agencies have continued search for Durga Prasai, the ‘chief commander’ of the ongoing royalist movement.

A total of 51 people, including above-mentioned leaders and protestors, have been arrested on Friday, according to the home ministry. The government also decided to take all necessary steps to curb possible demonstrations and protests by pro-monarchy and pro-Hindu parties, a minister said.

Demanding the restoration of monarchy and a Hindu state, several pro-monarchy and Hindu groups have come together for Kathmandu-centric protests. On March 9, they welcomed former king Gyanendra Shah upon his return from Pokhara.

Besides the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, several pro-Hindu and pro-monarchy groups and organisations have formed an alliance led by Subedi, 86. In the 1980s, he served as the chairman of the Rastriya Panchayat, legislative body during the partyless Panchayat system.

Nepal in the year 2006 had abolished centuries old constitutional monarchy after then-King Gyanendra seized power and imposed emergency sending all the leaders under house arrest. The movement also referred as “People’s Movement II” witnessed a bloodshed with dozens killed in crackdown against protestors by the government.

After weeks of violent protest and increasing international pressure, Gyanendra gave up and reinstated the dissolved parliament, the dawn of new democracy is highlighted as Lokantantra (People’s Rule).

Formed in the 1990’s after lift of ban in formation of political parties by then monarchial system, the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) since then serves as the force always supporting the Kingship. It also has been taking part in periodic elections and presenting its demands forth.

In the year 2008 right after the overthrow of monarchy rule from Nepal, the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) had secured 8 seats in then Constituent Assembly out of the 575 seated strong parliament. In the 2013 election it was able to secure 13 seats while in the year 2017 it fell down to 1 seat while it bounced back in the election of 2022 with 14 seats.

Since its inception, the party has been supporting Hindu State and the Kingship as interdependent in the tiny nation buffered between two giants India and China. The Himalayan Nation of Nepal has a population of 30.55 million has a Hindu population of 81.19 per cent as per the census of 2022. (ANI)

Sanjay Raut said that just like Bharatiya Janata Party MP Kangana Ranaut was given protection following her “rift” with Shiv Sena, Kamra should be provided the same.

This is the third summon issued to Kamra in the case filed by Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel at the Khar police station. He has failed to appear before the police in the first two summons.

On Friday, the Madras High Court granted interim anticipatory bail to Kunal Kamra in connection with multiple FIRs lodged against him. Justice Sunder Mohan ordered interim anticipatory bail until April 7 with conditions.

Kunal Kamra had approached the Madras High Court to seek transit anticipatory bail, claiming he has been receiving many threats following his recent satirical comments.

Earlier on Thursday, Kunal Kamra criticised the mainstream media, accusing it of serving as a mouthpiece for the ruling party. Kamra labelled the media as “vultures” and expressed his disdain for the media’s role in perpetuating misinformation and distracting from pressing issues.

India Sends 40 Tonnes Of Aid To Myanmar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday stated that Indian Navy Ships INS Satpura and INS Savitri have headed to Yangon port in Myanmar carrying aid under Operation Brahma.

The ships are carrying 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid for earthquake-hit Myanmar.

In a post on X, Jaishankar said, “Operation Brahma Indian Navy ships INS Satpura & INS Savitri are carrying 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid and headed for the port of Yangon.”

Meanwhile, an aftershock of magnitude 4.7 on Richter Scale jolted the region, as per the National Center for Seismology.

“EQ of M: 4.7, On: 29/03/2025 14:50:55 IST, Lat: 19.94 N, Long: 95.96 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Myanmar,” NCS said in a post on X.

At least 1,000 people are dead after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Mandalay in Myanmar and rocked neighboring Thailand. The quake was the largest to hit Myanmar in more than a century. The US Geological Survey estimated that the death toll could top 10,000, CNN reported.

The quake triggered the collapse of buildings hundreds of miles away. At least 10 people have died in the Thai capital, with authorities racing to free more than 100 others believed to be trapped under the rubble of an under-construction high-rise.

The Thai king, Maha Vajiralongkorn, along with the country’s queen and prince, expressed their “deep sorrow and condolences” to the families of those killed in the quake. The royal family announced that they have instructed for all earthquake victims from across the country to be admitted as patients under their “royal patronage” in a statement on Saturday, as per CNN.

‘Reckless Remarks Against Rajput King Rana Sanga Are Politically Motivated’

Subodh Mishra, an Asst Professor of history, says people holding public office must refrain from making claims based on dubious knowledge repositories. His views:

Recently, some unwarranted comments about Rajput king Rana Sanga have sparked off a major controversy, resulting into violent protests on road and heated debates on pubic platforms. I believe one must have some basic knowledge about a historical subject or figure before making any superfluous claim or allegation – in this case, the revered Rajput warrior Rana Sanga. This self-restriction becomes all the more important if the speaker is holding a privileged office of power or a seat of influence.

If we search through documented historical facts, and not dubious repositories, with regards to the claim that Rana Sanga invited Babur to unseat Ibrahim Lodi, we find it a blatant fabrication of lies. It is amply clear that Sanga repeatedly defeated not only Lodi but also the armies of the Sultans of Gujarat and Malwa several times; on one occasion he defeated the combined army of the last two.

As per the historical records, Rana Sanga fought more than 100 battles in his lifetime and except the battle of Khanwa, he was defeated in none. Why would Sanga then need help from any outsider? Therefore, the irresponsible remarks made by a Samajwadi Party Elder are not only an insult to the Rajput braveheart but also to all the warriors and patriots who laid down their lives for their motherland.

To my limited knowledge, the disparaging comments against Sanga smack of political machinations of some kind, probably an attempt to appease a particular segment of the society. That is why instead of instead of admitting the truth, the claimant is trying to garner support within his party cadres and keeping their own supporters misinformed.

Media houses have also jumped in to cash in on this controversy. Instead of playing the role of a fact-checker, they have encouraged conflicting, often half-baked, information on the subject to increase their viewership. Social media too is rife with ignorant people presenting romanticised poetry as historical facts to peddle their agenda and followership.

The easy and free-of-cost availability of information on the Internet has also fuelled this online misinformation war. Unverified and unauthentic claims are uploaded on dubious websites, which are then quoted out of context by social media handles, and a vested narrative is set. Lack of guidelines or laws to prevent such dubious data or misinformation further encourage such activities.

For these reasons, the media by and large has lost the trust of people. But those trying to dig out information from social media are no better placed. Unreliable data is fed through various platform based on your search algorithm and the vicious circle continues.

Some fresh amendments to common laws pertaining to the regulation of social media are the need of the hour. Besides, wilful dissemination of misinformation must be penalised with enhanced surveillance of social media. Strict guidelines should be set in place to check, verify and substantiate the data before being used and shared.

A disclaimer should be made necessary before propagating any kind of data or sensitive information which may affect the social harmony of a community or society. News channels and similar platforms should also adopt a practice of verifying all kind of data that they are going to use on their programmes or the data that their guests are going to share on the platform.

Three More Cases Filed Against Kunal Kamra In Mumbai

Three separate cases have been filed against Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra at Khar police station over his alleged controversial remarks about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

One of the complaints was filed by the Mayor of Jalgaon city, while the other two complaints came from a hotelier and a businessman from Nashik, as per the Mumbai Police.

Khar police have called Kamra twice for questioning, but he has not yet appeared for the investigation.

Earlier, the Madras High Court on Friday granted interim anticipatory bail to Kunal Kamra in connection with multiple FIRs lodged against him. Justice Sunder Mohan ordered interim anticipatory bail until April 7 with conditions.

Kunal Kamra had approached the Madras High Court to seek transit anticipatory bail, claiming he has been receiving many threats following his recent satirical comments.

On March 27, the Mumbai police asked the comedian to appear on March 31 at Khar police station for further questioning in the case. This is the third summon issued to Kamra in the case filed by Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel at the Khar police station. He has failed to appear before the police in the first two summons.

Earlier on Thursday, Kunal Kamra criticised the mainstream media, accusing it of serving as a mouthpiece for the ruling party.

Kamra labeled the media as “vultures” and expressed his disdain for the media’s role in perpetuating misinformation and distracting from pressing issues.

“To all those hounding for a quote – “The mainstream media at this point is nothing but a miscommunication arm of the ruling party. They are vultures who report on issues that don’t matter to the people of this country. If they all shut shop from tomorrow till eternity, they will be doing a favour to the country, its people, and their own children,” Kamra posted on X.

Kamra sparked a row with his “gaddar” (traitor) joke allegedly aimed at Eknath Shinde. Several political leaders condemned his remarks during a stand-up show and demanded action against him.

Following the controversy, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena youth group, Yuva Sena, vandalised the Habitat comedy venue where the show was filmed. The comedian, who has had several run-ins with the BJP-led Centre, has refused to apologise for his remark against Shinde. However, he has said that he would cooperate with the police.

“An entertainment venue is merely a platform. A space for all sorts of shows. Habitat (or any other venue) is not responsible for my comedy, nor does it have any power or control over what I say or do. Neither does any political party. Attacking a venue for a comedian’s words is as senseless as overturning a lorry carrying tomatoes, because you didn’t like the butter chicken you were served”, Kunal Kamra’s statement read.

Kunal Kamra also replied to political leaders ‘threatening’ him to teach a lesson in his official statement. Kamra stated that the ‘inability to take a joke at the expense of a powerful public figure does not change’ the nature of his right. He added that it is not against the law as far as his knowledge.

“Our right to freedom of speech and expression is not only to be used to fawn over the powerful and rich even though today’s media would have us believe otherwise. Your inability to take a joke at the expense of a powerful public figure does not change the nature of my right. As far as I know, it is not against the law to poke fun at our leaders and the circus that is our political system”, Kunal Kamra’s statement added. (ANI)

India Clears Biggest Ever ₹62,000 Cr Deal For Buying 156 Light Combat Helicopters

The Cabinet Committee on Security on Friday gave its nod for the biggest ever deal to buy 156 Light Combat Helicopters worth over Rs 62,000 crore for the Indian Army and Air Force from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

This would be the biggest order for the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited so far, and the choppers would be built at their plants in Bengaluru and Tumkur in Karnataka.

The 156 choppers would be divided between the Indian Army (90) and the Indian Air Force for operations along the China and Pakistan borders and would be a major step towards creating jobs and expanding the aerospace ecosystem within the country,” defence sources told ANI.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) received the tender for 156 Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) in June last year.

The IAF is the lead agency for this joint procurement, they said.

The LCH, which is also known as the Prachand, is the world’s only attack helicopter that can land and take off at an altitude of 5,000 meters (16,400 ft), which makes it ideal to operate in the high-altitude areas of the Siachen glacier and Eastern Ladakh.

The Prachand is also capable of firing a range of air-to-ground and air-to-air missiles and can destroy the enemy’s air defence operations.

The government has been emphasising the intention to go for self-reliance in defence manufacturing through Make in India as part of Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. The government has placed the biggest order for indigenous defence systems including the 83 Light Combat Aircraft and is in the process of ordering 97 more for which the negotiations have been concluded.

The Cabinet Committee on Security recently cleared the deal for 307 ATAGS howitzers and the deal for it is scheduled to be signed on Wednesday this week. The Rs 7,000 crore deal is divided between two companies, including Bharat Forge and the Tata group. (ANI)
