Tigmanshu Remembers Making Tea For SRK

Indian actor, writer, and director Tigmanshu Dhulia recently shared an interesting memory when he served tea to Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan.

Best known for his role in ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, Dhulia recalled the moment from 1994 when he worked as an assistant to filmmaker Shekhar Kapur.

While speaking to ANI, Dhulia shared that at the time, Kapur was staying in Mumbai after completing ‘Bandit Queen’ and started working on several film projects, including ‘Maut Se Jo Darte Nahin’, featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Naseeruddin Shah, and Suniel Shetty, but many of them were never completed.

“Shekhar ji, during that time, after doing Bandit Queen, stayed in Mumbai for about one and a half to two years before moving on to international projects. Many films were started but later shelved. One of them was Maut Se Jo Darte Nahin with Shah Rukh, Nasser Bhai, and Sunil Shetty…”

Dhulia went on to describe how he ended up making tea for SRK during that time while they were working on the script at Kapur’s flat, where Khan had also visited.

“Toh humne script likhna shuru kiya. Shah Rukh Shekhar ji ke flat mein bhi aaye the. Mujhe yaad hai, maine Shah Rukh ko chai banake pilayi thi. Microwave mein banayi thi… mujhe aata bhi nahi tha ki microwave kaise chalta hai. Shekhar ji ne kaha, ‘Ja yaar, chai bana de.’ Pehli baar maine dekha tha ki microwave kaisa hota hai. Yeh main aapko 94 ki baat bata raha hoon. Phir bhi mujhe lagta hai ki maine Shah Rukh ko bohot ghatiya chai banake pilayi hogi,” he said.

On the work front, Tigmanshu Dhulia has garnered international recognition with the biographical film, ‘Paan Singh Tomar’, which premiered at the 2010 BFI London Film Festival and the thriller drama ‘Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster’. ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ eventually went on to win the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 2012. He is also well known for his role as Ramadhir Singh in Anurag Kashyap’s cult film ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’. (ANI)

India, Australia Mark Third Anniv Of ECTA

India and Australia have marked the third anniversary of the signing of Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (Ind-Aus ECTA), a landmark achievement that enhanced their economic partnership. After the agreement’s signing and implementation, total bilateral trade between the two nations reached USD 24 billion.

The partnership between India and Australia is poised for even greater growth. As the ECTA celebrates its third anniversary, the two nations reaffirmed their “commitment to deepening their economic ties, driving mutual prosperity, and contributing to a stronger and more resilient global economy”, according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry press release.

After the ECTA was signed, India and Australia have fostered new economic opportunities, underlining the complementary strengths of both economies. Since the agreement was signed on April 2, 2022, it has created pathways for robust trade, offering new avenues for businesses, entrepreneurs, and employment across both nations.

In a press release, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said, “Following the signing and implementation of the agreement, total bilateral trade reached USD 24 billion in 2023-24, marking an impressive 14 per cent growth in India’s exports to Australia as compared to 2022-23. This positive momentum continues in the current fiscal year, with India’s exports to Australia having increased by 4.4 per cent during April 2024-February 2025 as compared to the same period in April 2023-February 2024.”

The ECTA has brought tangible benefits in various sectors, notably textiles, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and agriculture. Imports of key raw materials, like metalliferous ores, cotton, wood and wood products have supported the growth of Indian industries, solidifying the mutually beneficial and complementary nature of the partnership.

In a press release, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry stated, “Exports on new lines, such as Calcined Petroleum Coke, High-Capacity Diesel Generating Sets, and Air Liquefaction Machinery, demonstrate the expanding trade opportunities facilitated by the agreement. Sectors like electronics and engineering hold significant potential for future exports, offering promising prospects for further growth and innovation.”

State Should Not Interfere With Religion: Sajad Gani Lone On Waqf Bill

Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference President and MLA from Handwara, Sajad Gani Lone, stated on Wednesday that the state should not interfere with religion and that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill is a matter of religion.

“The Waqf property is collectively owned by the Muslims of the country. It is the right of the Muslims to decide on these (properties) by using their institutions and systems. The state should not have any interference with the religion. We do not advocate with any religion and neither with our religion. It is gross interference. It is our matter,” Lone told ANI.

“It is a matter of our religion,” he asserted, adding “We do not know what are they (Central government) are up to? Who are they looking to appease?”

Meanwhile, introducing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, in Lok Sabha, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday questioned why Waqf properties haven’t been used for the development of the nation and Muslims.

Rijiju said that India has the highest number of Waqf properties in the world and questioned why they haven’t been used for the education, medical treatment, skill development, and income generation of poor Muslims.

“When our country has the largest Waqf property in the world, why hasn’t it been used for the education, medical treatment, skill development, and income generation of poor Muslims? Why has no progress been made in this regard so far?” Rijiju said in Lok Sabha.

Rijiju also questioned the Oppositions objections to the PM Modi-led government working for the betterment of Muslims

“If this government, under the leadership of PM Modi, is working for the betterment of poor Muslims, then why is there an objection?” Rijiju asked.

Rijiju also noted that the number of Waqf properties has doubled in the country, and their income has also increased.

“Today, the total Waqf property has increased from 4.9 lakh to 8.72 lakh in our country. If these 8.72 lakh Waqf properties were managed properly, it would not only improve the lives of Muslims but also transform the destiny of the entire country.” Rijiu said

“On our own WAMSI portal, we have reviewed the records. The Sachar Committee, which was formed in 2006 has also provided detailed information on this matter. In 2006, there were 4.9 lakh Waqf properties, and the total income from them was Rs 163 crore, and after making changes in 2013, the income has increased to Rs 166 crore,” he added.

Rijiju clarified that under the new amendment Waqf board will have a broader representation and women will be compulsory member of the board.

“Now Shia, Sunni, Bohra, backward Muslims, women, and expert Non-Muslims will also be there in Waqf Board. Let me elaborate in detail. I’ll give my own example. Suppose I am not a Muslim but I am Minority Affairs Minister. Then I become Chairman of the Central Waqf Council. Despite my position, there can be a maximum of’ four non-muslim members in the Council, and among them, two women members are compulsory” Rijiju said.

He said that under this amendment Waqf board will have a centralised database, no secrecy, and improved efficiency.

“We have worked to improve efficiency by utilising technology. A centralised database and a digital portal will be implemented, ensuring that no one can secretly create Waqf properties under the cover of darkness. Proper registration, tracking, monitoring, and compliance mechanisms have been established. There is also a provision to rectify manual errors. The bill includes measures to address bureaucratic delays, and finally, proper auditing is essential. We are entrusting the responsibility of auditing to the state governments,” Rijiju said.

Along with the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, Rijiju also moved the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2024, for consideration and passing in the Lok Sabha.

The bill was earlier presented in the Lok Sabha on August of last year and a Joint Parliamentary Committee, headed by BJP member Jagdambika Pal, examined it.

The bill seeks to amend Act of 1995. The Bill seeks to improve the administration and management of waqf properties in India. It aims to overcome the shortcomings of the previous act and enhance the efficiency of Waqf boards, improving the registration process, and increasing the role of technology in managing waqf records. Chilean Prez Gabriel Visits Taj Mahal During First Visit

Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font visited the Taj Mahal in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra on Wednesday.

Boric spent around one hour at the Taj Mahal, and the visuals showed an official explaining the monument to him.

Earlier in the day, Boric and his delegation arrived in Uttar Pradesh for his visit to the Taj Mahal. He and his delegation were warmly received at the airport.

Chilean President Boric is currently on a State visit to India. This is President Boric’s first state visit to India. He was warmly received in Delhi by Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita on Tuesday.

His first engagement of the day was a call-on by the External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar. This was followed by extensive bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Later in the evening, President Droupadi Murmu hosted a banquet in honour of Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday.

In her remarks at the banquet, President Murmu said Boric is an inspiration for all young leaders and expressed happiness to know about his political journey from student politics to presidency. She further said that India and Chile’s political and economic priorities are complementary.

She said, “I am delighted to welcome Chile President Gabriel Boric Font and his delegation on his first State visit to India. This maybe your first visit to India, but I have realised from meeting you that you have a deep understanding and interest in India. I hope you have had a very enjoyable time in India so far.”

“I remember excellency, a few years ago, when you were elected as President of Chile, many of us here in India appreciated such young leader taking on the responsibility of the highest position of this country. I was happy to know about your political journey, from student politics to the presidency. I believe that it is important for more and more youth to take interest in the active politics. President Boric, you are indeed an inspiration for all young leaders,” she added.

Meanwhile, Gabriel Boric Font praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s exceptional qualities, noting that PM Modi can talk to every leader in the world and is a “key geopolitical player nowadays.”

In his remarks at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, he said, “President Modi, you have the status nowadays that you can talk to every leader of the world. You’re supporting Trump, Zelenskyy, the European Union, and the Latin American leaders in Greece or Iran. That is something that no other leader can say now. So you’re a key player in the geopolitical atmosphere nowadays, he said.

He also expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome he received in India and stated, “I am here for the first time for a State visit… I want to thank you for the warm welcome that we have received here…for the past 16 years, no one from Chile has come here, and in that 16 years, India has changed a lot.” (ANI)

So, What Is Her Crime?

Is America under Donald Trump rapidly turning into a Police State dictatorship? Well, all the signs are out there, like an ill, apocalyptic omen, which was waiting to happen.

So what was the crime of Ozturk, 30, a talented Tufts University student? She wrote an opinion piece for the students’ magazine, co-authored with three other students, arguing that that the university should “acknowledge the Palestinian genocide” and “divest from companies with direct or indirect ties to Israel”. This has been the demand of thousands of students, peacefully protesting in America and Europe, since the beginning of the Genocide in Gaza.

So? What is her crime?

Indeed, it has been made out to be crime under the ‘new democracy’ hatched by Trump and his white supremacist, racist, Far-Right team, along with his billionaire buddy, who has a proven fascist past in South Africa, while his recent Nazi salute, celebrating the Trump victory, is the latest testimony.

Rümeysa was detained with no evidence or explanation, by masked men and women, allegedly cops without uniforms, badges or identity cards, in a Boston-area suburb, in front of her shocked neighbourhood, while the footage of this sinister act went viral. A Fulbright PhD scholar, with a legitimate visa, she is being threatened to be packed off to Turkey. Indeed, even her initial whereabouts were not known, not even to her lawyers and relatives.

If this is not like an underworld gang operation with no accountability, what is?

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has predictably accused her of supporting Hamas, with no evidence. So, just like being ‘red-under-the-bed’ was the phobia manufactured in the Cold War against dissidents and intellectuals, Hamas is the key word in the Trump-era. Even while top US officials negotiate with Hamas leaders in the comfort zone of Qatar, as Isreal continues to bomb camps, schools and hospitals in Gaza – despite the ceasefire.

There are no charges against Öztürk, her lawyers say. “This is a first step in getting Rümeysa released and back home to Boston so she can continue her studies. But we never should have gotten here in the first place: Rümeysa’s experience is shocking, cruel, and unconstitutional,” Mahsa Khanbabai, one of her attorneys, said. “Criticizing US foreign policy and human rights violations is neither illegal nor grounds for detention… The government must immediately release Rümeysa to continue her studies and rejoin her community.”

With the threat of deportation, in shackles and chains, looming large on campus activists, especially those who are not white, Indian scholar Ranjani Srinivisan, 37, doing her PhD in Columbia University, had a harrowing time — for no rhyme or reason! She had to flee for her life to Canada because her student visa was revoked unceremoniously for being a “terrorist sympathiser”. This was totally out-of-the-blue. She was not even political, it seems!

Talking to the New York Times, a former Fulbright scholar, she said the atmosphere was “dangerous’. “I’m fearful that even the most low-level political speech or just doing what we all do — like shout into the abyss that is social media — can turn into this dystopian nightmare where somebody is calling you a terrorist sympathizer and making you, literally, fear for your life and your safety,” she said.

The case of Mahmoud Khalil is well-known. Again, apparently unknown men entered his home, handcuffed him, and pushed him in a vehicle. His wife pleaded, where are you taking him, why, he has done no crime — but no one was listening. His crime? He was a student activist in Columbia University campaigning against the genocide in Gaza, and seeking an immediate ceasefire. So, he too, becomes a Hamas terrorist.

Said the powerful group, Jewish for Peace, who have orgainised massive protest marches under the banner, ‘March for Palestine’: “Ozturk’s abduction is another signal of the urgency of this moment: we must show the power and strength of our movement to defend student activists, to show the world that we aren’t afraid, and to continue to stand on the right side of history, in opposition to the US and Israeli-funded genocide. We will mobilize in HUGE NUMBERS on April 5 for a national march in Washington. This is not ‘just another demonstration’. This is a decisive moment in our movement for Palestine and in defense of civil liberties.”

Meanwhile, in a horrifying seven-second clip from Germany, a frail young girl was brutally picked up by an armed cop, and thrown on the ground, even as other women, old and young, came to defend her; they too were not spared, while all these men were big, burly male cops, openly attacking women.

Germany, one believes, claims to be a Western Democracy. So why is the government there so obsessively in love with the Israeli war machine — is it the guilt of the Holocaust, enacted like a nightmare now, unleashed on women protesters seeking justice in Palestine?

Meanwhile, words are being eliminated, banned, removed from public places in the US. So much like the Big Brother project in George Orwell’s 1984. If you remove language, can the mind think? Indeed, if you remove certain words, or burn books, as by the Nazis, does the bitter realism of the present and the past, cease to exist?

As this columnist wrote in the last column here (Donald’ Trumpet Plays Songs of Death), “Counterpunch says that the New York Times ran an article about words that are discouraged at Federal Agencies under the new Trumpist administration. A total of 172 words appeared printed in red: Native American. Women. Black. Immigrants. Disability. Gender. Advocacy. Mental health. And, of course, any phrases or expressions having to do with diversity, equity, and inclusion: diverse backgrounds, diverse communities, diverse groups, diversified, diversify, diversifying, enhancing diversity, increasing diversity, inclusiveness, inclusive leadership… These words are all to be purged from websites, grant proposals, class curricula, without delay.”

Trump has signed another executive order now targeting the prestigious Smithsonian Institution, and the 20 museums and research centres which it runs. As many as 35 million people come to these knowledge centers annually in Washington DC, Virginia and New York City. The order seeks to “eliminate improper, divisive, or anti-American ideology” — including, yes, from the National Zoo in Washington.

Typically, like the Orwellian ‘Reverse Double-Speak’, the order is called: ‘Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History’. It also alleges, hilariously indeed, that the American Women’s History Museum, plans to “recognize men as women”. Pray, how, and why, for God’s sake?

Earlier, another prestigious institution, John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC, was censored. Trump declared himself as its chairman. Actors and filmmakers condemned this absurd move. Now you can see how the Moral and Culture Police operates in what they claim to be an advanced capitalist democracy. Inspired by the Moral Police of Iran, is it?

Meanwhile, Columbia University’s interim president, Katrina Armstrong, has quit. Trump has targeted it by cancelling $400 million in federal funding; it has been claimed that the university did not do enough to combat ‘anti-semitism’ etc, while peaceful protests and mass encampments in the open rocked the campus, against the killings in Gaza.

Perhaps, taking a cue, Indian film censors have refused to allow the release of a much-acclaimed film, Santosh.  Written and directed by British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri, the film is set in north India and probes the murder of a young Dalit girl. It is also an apparent commentary on the police system.

The film has been praised across international platforms, including at Cannes. It was the UK’s official entry for the Oscars’ international feature category, was nominated for a Bafta for best debut feature, and has found fantastic film reviews in the mainline British Press. Shahana Goswami, playing the lead, has won the best actress award at the Asian film awards show.

Surely, the ‘acche din’ which so gloriously began in the ill-fated land of India in the summer of 2014, seems to be now spreading in the West. So who can now dare to say that India is not the Vishwaguru?

INDIA Alliance Stands Together To Oppose This Bill: Kanimozhi

DMK MP Kanimozhi on Wednesday reaffirmed that INDIA alliance stand together to oppose the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

“The DMK is opposing it. Our CM MK Stalin has passed a resolution in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. We will not give up on the minorities of this country. The INDIA alliance stands together to oppose this Bill,” Kanimozhi said.

AAP MP Sanjay Singh alleged that this is BJP’s initiation to “take possession” of Waqf properties and give it to their friends.

“The people of the country should beware now that BJP has made an initiation towards taking possession of Waqf properties and giving them to their own friends. They will do the same with properties belonging to gurudwaras, temples and churches,” Sanjay Singh said.

Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2024, for consideration and passing in the Lok Sabha.

Introducing the bill, Rijiju said that Joint Parliamentary Committee, which examined the legislation, held very extensive discussions and such wide consultations on the legislation had never been done in the parliamentary history of India.

“I want to say that the discussion that has taken place on the Waqf Amendment Bill in the Joint Committee of both the Houses has never been done in the parliamentary history of India till date. I thank and congratulate all the members of the Joint Committee…Till date, a total of 284 delegations….of different communities have presented their views and suggestions before the committee. Waqf boards of 25 state governments and union territories have also presented their submissions,” Rijiju said.

I Can’t Support AI’s Plagiarisation: Vishal Dadlani On Ghibli Trend

Studio Ghibli trend of creating images in the unique Japanese art form using AI is creating a buzz on the internet. Turning pictures into a unique art style of the popular studio, Studio Ghibli, may have been loved by many, but for singer Vishal Dadlani, it is nothing more than a mere example of “AI Plagirisation.”

Indian Idol judge and singer Vishal Dadlani slammed the ongoing Studio Ghibli trend and urged fans not to tag him in posts featuring his Ghibli-style avatar.

Through his Instagram story, Dadlani expressed his unhappiness with the plagiarism of an artist’s life work by an Artificial Intelligence tool. The singer also highlighted the environmental hazards due to the generation of Ghibli-style photos.

He wrote,

“Sorry, I’m not sharing any of the Studio Ghibli style images you guys have made of or for me. I just can’t bring myself to support Al’s plagiarisation of an artist’s life’s work. Not to mention, the environmental horror that those images are. Please do NOT make any more. Thank you.”

Vishal is best known for composing tracks for Om Shanti Om, Anjaana Anjaani, Dostana, I Hate Luv Storys, Bang Bang!, Sultan, Student of the Year, Befikre and War.
