Congress, RJD Discuss Strategy For Upcoming Bihar Elections

Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal have started their discussions for the upcoming Bihar elections, with RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav meeting Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and other party leaders in Delhi on Tuesday.

The meeting was attended by Congress’ Rahul Gandhi, party’s General Secretary (Organisation) K C Venugopal and others. On the RJD side, MP Manoj Jha, MP Sanjay Yadav and other leaders were present.

Early this morning, Tejashwi Yadav landed at Delhi airport for his official meeting with the Congress over the Bihar polls. After coming out of the airport, he said they would be discussing seat-sharing and poll strategy at Kharge’s residence.

Speaking to reporters, Yadav said, “Today is our official meeting. We will discuss the strategies for Bihar (elections). “

Speaking about the meeting, RJD leader and RS MP Manoj Jha told ANI, “This is a formal meeting. If we look at the Congress party’s allies, RJD has been the oldest ally as of now. In this formal meeting, the entire scenario will be discussed.”

Saying that the “entire context” of Bihar will be discussed, Jha added, “This meeting has been scheduled keeping in view the entire context of Bihar, and since the elections are now about 6-8 months away, it will be discussed.”

Notably, Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar has raised the issue of migration in Bihar, taking out the ‘Naukri do’ rally to urge the state government to stop migration and facilitate job creation for the youth. On April 7, Kumar was joined by Rahul Gandhi in Begusarai for the yatra.

Earlier on March 30, while sounding the poll bugle for the party in Bihar, Union Home Minister Amit Shah slammed former bihar CM Lalu Prasad Yadav of presiding over a “jungle raj” and corruption between 1990-2005.

“What did Lalu Yadav’s government do in Bihar from 1990 to 2005? Lalu Yadav’s government defamed Bihar in the country and the world by doing a fodder scam in the entire state. His government will always be known as ‘Jungle Raj’ in the history of Bihar,” the Home Minister said.

A high stakes battle is expected to take place in Bihar, with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA); consisting of Janata Dal (United) led by Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, and the Bharatiya Janata Party fighting against the Mahagathbandan; consisting of Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and left parties.

Mallikarjun Kharge is also expected to take out a rally in Bihar’s Buxar on April 20. (ANI)

Passenger Vehicle Sales Hit Record 43 Lakh Units In 2024-25

Passenger vehicle sales in India reached an all-time high of 4.3 million units in the financial year 2024-25, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

This marks a 2 per cent increase compared to the previous year, Utility Vehicles (UVs) remained the key growth driver in the passenger vehicle segment. Their share in overall sales rose to 65 per cent in FY 2024-25, up from around 60 per cent in the previous year.

SIAM said “Passenger Vehicles (PV) posted its highest ever sales in FY 2024-25 of 4.3 million units, with a growth of 2 per cent as compared to FY 2023-24”.

It also added that new model launches with modern designs and advanced features attracted more buyers. Additionally, attractive discounts and promotional offers helped keep up the demand.

As per data, passenger vehicles also saw their highest-ever exports during the year, reaching 0.77 million units.

This is a 14.6 per cent increase compared to FY 2023-24. The rise in exports was supported by demand for global models made in India, especially in Latin American and African markets. Some automakers even began exporting to developed countries.

Overall, the Indian automobile industry grew 7.3 per cent in domestic sales and saw a strong 19.2 per cent jump in exports.

SIAM credited this performance to strong customer demand, government support, infrastructure investments, and the growing focus on sustainable mobility. Positive economic policies and healthy market sentiment also helped sustain the growth.

Two-wheeler sales saw solid recovery, with 19.6 million units sold in FY 2024-25, showing a growth of 9.1 per cent. Improved rural demand and rising consumer confidence played a key role in this growth. The scooter segment led the way, thanks to better connectivity in rural and semi-urban areas and the launch of new models with better features.

Electric vehicles (EVs) also gained ground, with their share in total two-wheeler sales crossing 6 per cent during the year. Two-wheeler exports grew strongly by 21.4 per cent to reach 4.2 million units. This was due to new product launches and increased demand in Africa and Latin America.

Looking ahead, SIAM expects the auto sector to continue its growth in FY 2025-26. Stable economic conditions, proactive government policies, and infrastructure spending are likely to support this growth. A normal monsoon, as forecasted, is also expected to boost demand, especially in rural and semi-urban areas. (ANI)

MP CM Vows Strict Action In Neemuch Jain Monk Attack

Reacting over an incident of attack on Jain monks in Madhya Pradesh’s Neemuch district, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Monday said the state government would not tolerate any such incident and strict action would be taken against the accused.

“I got information about yesterday’s incident that some people misbehaved with our Jain monks after drinking alcohol. We immediately formed a police team and caught all the people. The government will not tolerate any such incident. With this, I have given a strong message, and strict action will be taken against the accused,” CM Yadav said while speaking to reporters in Indore.

CM Yadav reached Indore to pay tribute to Dr B R Ambedkar at his birthplace memorial in Mhow on his birth anniversary.

“Today, on the occasion of Baba Saheb Ambedkar’s birth anniversary, I paid tribute to him at his birthplace in Mhow, Indore. I am happy that just yesterday, Prime Minister Modi approved a new train from Mhow to Delhi; we inaugurated it as well. It is a big gift for Babasaheb’s birthplace. Two days ago, our government launched the Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar Kamdhenu Yojana, which is a big scheme for milk producers that would benefit the huge population of the state,” the CM said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Jagdish Devda also reacted to the Neemuch incident and said that the police took action, resulting in the arrest of six people. He further emphasised that the law would follow its course and the accused would be spared.

“Action has been taken by the police, and about six people have been arrested. The police and the state government will take strict action on the matter. The law will do its job. No such people will be spared,” Dy CM Devda said.

The attack on the Jain monks occurred in Kachhala village under the jurisdiction of the Singoli police station in Neemuch district on the intervening night of April 13. Following this, the police swung into action, formed a team and arrested all the accused involved in the incident.

“A few anti-social elements attacked three Jain monks in Kachhala village under Singoli police station limits on the intervening night of April 13. It was an unfortunate incident; we formed a police team in the night itself and rounded up all the accused. Strict action will be taken against them,” said Ankit Jaiswal, Superintendent of Police (SP, Neemuch).

Neemuch Collector Himanshu Chandra said that a case was registered against the accused under strong sections and the administration was committed that such incidents would not repeat in future. (ANI)

Russia-Ukraine War Is Biden’s War: Trump

US President Donald Trump on Monday blamed the Joe Biden administration for the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and claimed that the war would not have occurred if the 2020 election had not been “rigged.”

Sharing a post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote, “The war between Russia and Ukraine is Biden’s war, not mine. I just got here, and for four years during my term, I had no problem preventing it from happening. President Putin and everyone else respected your President! I had nothing to do with this war, but I am working diligently to get the death and destruction to stop. If the 2020 Presidential Election was not rigged, and it was, in so many ways, that horrible war would never have happened.”

He further criticised both former President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for their handling of the situation.

“President Zelenskyy and Crooked Joe Biden did an absolutely horrible job in allowing this travesty to begin. There were so many ways of preventing it from ever starting. But that is the past. Now we have to get it to stop and fast.”

Earlier in March, Trump had also criticised Biden’s handling of the Russia-Ukraine war, suggesting that under Biden, Russia attempted to take control of all of Ukraine.

“Under President Bush, Russia got Georgia. Under President Obama, they got a nice big submarine base, a nice big chunk of land where they have their submarines. Under President Trump, they got nothing and under President Biden, they tried to get the whole thing. They tried to get the whole of Ukraine. If I didn’t get in here, they would have gotten the whole thing,” Trump said.

Trump added, “I gave Russia nothing except grief. We have to make a deal because there are a lot of people being killed who shouldn’t be killed. But remember, Trump gave them nothing, and the other presidents gave them a lot. They gave him everything.”

Meanwhile, President Trump has said Russia’s deadly missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Sumy on Sunday was “a mistake,” calling it a “horrible thing” even as members of his administration went further with condemnation that served as a rare critique of Moscow while the White House is pushing for a ceasefire, the New York Times reported.

“I think it was terrible. And I was told they made a mistake. But I think it’s a horrible thing,” Trump said about the Sumy attack.

On Sunday morning, two ballistic missiles struck Sumy, resulting in the deaths of at least 34 individuals and leaving over 100 others injured. (ANI)

Amid the ongoing promotions for ‘Kesari 2’, Akshay Kumar, R Madhavan, and Ananya Panday on Monday offered prayers at the Golden Temple.

Sharing a picture from the sacred visit, Akshay took to Instagram and wrote, “Sir jhukaya, sukun paya (Head bowed, found peace),” Akshay captioned the post.

The image shows Akshay, Madhavan and Ananya could be seen expressing gratitude to God with folded hands.

Ananya, too, shared a picture with her ‘Kesari 2’ co-stars from the Golden Temple and captioned it, “Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh #KesariChapter2.”

Kesari Chapter 2 will focus on the untold story of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The lead star, Akshay Kumar, will play the legendary advocate C Sankaran Nair in the film, which will be released on April 18. It is directed by Karan Singh Tyagi and produced by Karan Johar

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre, which took place on April 13, 1919, remains one of the darkest chapters in India’s colonial history. According to the Ministry of Culture, the massacre marked a turning point in India’s freedom struggle and is remembered as a symbol of courage and resistance.

The massacre occurred in Amritsar, Punjab, where thousands had gathered at Jallianwala Bagh during the festival of Baisakhi.

The gathering was also meant to peacefully protest against the Rowlatt Act and demand the release of leaders Dr Satyapal and Dr Saifuddin Kitchlew.British officer Brigadier General Reginald Dyer, without issuing any warning, ordered his troops to fire on the unarmed crowd.

According to the Ministry of Culture, “1650 rounds were fired. The firing ceased only after the ammunition had ran out.” While official British records put the death toll at 291, Indian leaders like Madan Mohan Malviya estimated over 500 deaths.

Kesari 1, which was released in 2019, followed the events leading to the Battle of Saragarhi, a battle between 21 Sikh soldiers of the 36th Sikh Regiment of the British Indian Army and 10,000 Afridi and Orakzai Pashtun tribesmen in 1897. Parineeti Chopra played a pivotal role in the first chapter. (ANI)

Jairam Slams Punjab Govt For Action Against Bajwa

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh on Sunday accused the AAP government in Punjab of “resorting to intimidation, smear and threats” after Leader of Opposition in the state’s assembly Pratap Singh Bajwa’s “50 bombs” remark.

Lashing out at the government after a Punjab Police counter-intelligence team questioned Bajwa at his residence yesterday, Ramesh called Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann “a bundle of insecurity and incompetence” and said that the AAP “leadership is rattled.”

“Instead of taking the warning seriously, the Chief Minister of Punjab accused Mr. Bajwa – who has lost family to terrorism – of links with terrorist groups. A counter-intelligence team was sent to Mr. Bajwa’s residence, and cases have now been registered under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023,” Jairam Ramesh wrote on X.

“Clearly, the Punjab Chief Minister – a bundle of insecurity and incompetence- and the corrupt AAP leadership is rattled and is resorting to intimidation, smear and threats. It will not work,” he added.

Lashing out at AAP, Ramesh said that governance in Punjab has “completely collapsed” and added that “Congress will not be silenced.”

“Governance in Punjab has completely collapsed. The Indian National Congress will not be silenced and will continue to raise the concerns of the people forcefully,” Ramesh wrote on X.

Ramesh’s outrageous criticism of the Punjab government came after A team of Punjab Police’s Counterintelligence officers questioned Partap Singh Bajwa at his residence on the latter’s statement about grenades and bombs coming into the state.

Bajwa has come under fire for his remarks, where he said that 50 bombs have reached Punjab and 18 of them have already exploded, while the 32 bombs are yet to go off.

“I gave a statement to a TV channel that my sources have warned me that several bombs have come to Punjab. 18 bombs have exploded, and 30-32 bombs are to be used. My source told me that I am in an important position, so I should stay aware since my family has already been a victim of terrorism,” Bajwa told reporters (ANI)

Elections Must Be Held Under President’s Rule: WB LoP Suvendu Adhikari

West Bengal Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Monday demanded that elections be held under President’s Rule in areas where Hindus are in the minority, citing concerns over voting rights after the Murshidabad violence.

He also called for a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the violence, labeling it as “anti-national activities.”

Adhikari has petitioned the Calcutta High Court, seeking the deployment of central forces in Murshidabad due to escalating violence. The violence erupted over protests against the Waqf Amendment Act, resulting in three deaths and multiple injuries.

Speaking to ANI, he said, “I have this in my petition that after such explosions and firing incidents, the NIA should investigate (in Murshidabad) as these are anti-national activities… Wherever Hindus are in the minority, they don’t let Hindus vote, and hence, the Elections must be held under president rule for the sake of democracy…”

The BJP accuses the TMC government of inaction and appeasement, while the TMC accuses the BJP of stoking communal tension.

Earlier today, Union Minister and West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar launched a scathing attack on the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government and stated that once the BJP forms the government in the state, strict actions will be taken against the perpetrators of the Murshidabad violence.

“The situation has improved a bit (in Murshidabad) after the deployment of central forces, but the situation is still not such that Hindus can live freely with their heads held high. People who fled from the Murshidabad district and went to Malda as refugees are still not ready to return,” Majumdar said.

He further said that West Bengal has become a lighter version of “Bangladesh”.

“Hindus of Bengal have understood that Mamata Banerjee has succeeded in making West Bengal a light version of Bangladesh,” he said.

West Bengal Police have arrested 150 individuals in connection with the Murshidabad violence. According to a police statement, adequate police forces have been deployed in Samserganj, Dhuliyan, Suti, and other affected areas to maintain order.

BJP MP from Purulia Jyotirmay Singh Mahato has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging the imposition of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in Malda, Murshidabad, Nadia, and South 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal, citing a deteriorating security situation and alleging targeted violence against the Hindu community.

On Saturday, a special bench of the Calcutta High Court ordered the deployment of central forces “immediately” in Murshidabad in the wake of widespread violence in the district during the protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act that resulted in three deaths so far. (ANI)

I Am Willing To Join Politics: Robert Vadra

Businessman Robert Vadra, the husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, expressed his willingness to join politics, saying that if the Congress party feels he should take that step, he would do so with the blessings of his family.

Speaking to ANI in an exclusive interview on Monday, Vadra emphasised that his connection to politics has largely been due to his association with the Gandhi family. However, he stated that over the years, multiple political parties have tried to pull him into political discussions, often using his name as a distraction during elections or other issues.

“My association with politics is only because I am a member of the Gandhi family. But I will also say that in the last many years, many parties have used my name and always pulled me into politics by default because every time there’s an election, they remember my name. Every time they have an issue that they want to digress from, they remember my name,” Vadra said, adding that it has often felt like a political witch hunt and vendetta.

He noted that his family, particularly his wife, Priyanka and brother-in-law, Rahul Gandhi, has been a great source of learning, and they actively participate in Parliament.

“I always said that I would like Priyanka to be in Parliament first, and now she is, and she’s working very hard. I see how much I’ve learnt from her and from Rahul and everybody in the family,” he added.

Vadra emphasised that if the Congress party decides he should join politics, he would take that step, understanding the need for more voices in Parliament to fight divisive forces and work toward keeping the country secular.

“So I feel that, with the blessings of my family and if the Congress feels that I should be in politics, I will take that step. They know I have a lot of understanding of what’s happening on the ground and what change is required,” Vadra said.

In addition, Vadra also commented on the recent arrest of fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi in Belgium. He termed the arrest a “very big thing for the country” but stressed that while the arrest is important, the focus should now shift to recovering the stolen money and ensuring the people affected by the financial fraud are compensated.

“It is a very big thing for the country. Arresting is a different thing, but it is important that the money of the people who have been wronged should be recovered, and the government should think about it. Nirav Modi and other people should also be brought back, and the government should ensure that the losses of the people are taken care of,” Vadra said.

Mehul Choksi was arrested in Belgium on Saturday after local authorities confirmed his presence in the country. The 65-year-old fugitive diamond merchant who left India on January 2, 2018, is wanted by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for allegedly defrauding the PNB of Rs 13,850 crore. His nephew, Nirav Modi, was also involved with him in the fraud. (ANI)

Pakistan’s Non-Playing Captain

The convenient distancing from the 2008 Mumbai terror attack mastermind Tahawwur Husain Rana on the ground that his Pakistani citizenship had ‘lapsed’ once he became a Canadian national has nevertheless brought the focus back on terrorism.

Not the least, because on the same day, April 10, an attack launched on the Masroor base of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) in Karachi was foiled. Nine armed militants were arrested, a report in The News daily said.

The report officially announced details of ‘terrorists’ belonging to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ‘trespassing’ the Pak-Afghan border, “prepared to die” with plans to “take control” of the strategically vital air base. The attack had been planned for “close to 13 months”.

It said the militants’ commander “allegedly has a safe haven” in Afghanistan and gave by-now familiar reasons of the militants, incidentally Pakistani citizens, ‘trespassing’ the border and that their ‘financial requirements’ were taken care of by “intelligence agencies of enemy countries.”

The “planned terror attacks” by those “prepared to die” will ring a bell for those who recall the 2008 events, except that the Indians were caught napping and the ten youths who had arrived by boat from Pakistan played merry hell with Mumbai, killing 166 and damaging property estimated at $1.5 billion over three days.

Pakistan’s ‘establishment’ – the short-hand term for its powerful military and intelligence agencies – will feel relieved at the TTP’s failure at the air base. It may also congratulate itself that after 16 years’ efforts, all that the Indians, who had tried, convicted and hanged the sole terrorist Ajmal Kasab, have only got Rana, whom Pakistan can disown. On the other hand, their homegrown masterminds of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) are safe at home, in and out of jail as required to hoodwink the United Nations and the world community. Their nuisance value as ‘assets’, well-known by now, is curbed for fear of global sanctions. So far as Pakistan is concerned, the Mumbai story rests there, comfortably.

Rana is but a consolation prize for India, having only symbolic value. He was no more than a facilitator of Daud Coleman Hadley, the US’s double agent who, too, had only facilitated the LeT-executed operation. Rana will stand trial in an Indian court amidst much domestic brouhaha, and probably end up on the gallows.

But the chicken has come home to roost in Pakistan. Besides the TTP, more groups are actively challenging the state, especially along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), from the Khunjerab Pass in the north to the Gwadar port in the south.

Balochistan has become volatile. Last month, the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) militants ambushed an entire train carrying 440 passengers. By mid-March this year, Pakistan has seen a dramatic rise in terror attacks, with 179 incidents so far, 255 security force fatalities, surpassing the 2024 toll in the same period.

Like its midwife, the ‘establishment’, armed militancy has also become ingrained in Pakistan’s body politic. Although an Indian-eye-view of Pakistan, writing this is sad about a nation. Politicians – of course, with their legislatures functioning amidst a full display of power games – come and go. Witness the present, rather prolonged, phase of political instability and economic distress.

Two mainstream political parties have combined to keep the third one out. All three have hobnobbed with the establishment at one time or the other and owe their electoral victory, and ironically, also the defeat, to it. Only, the victor of the day denies it all when the loser(s) hurl accusations. In Pakistan’s scheme of things, hammam ke andar sab nungey hain (Everybody is naked in the bathroom) – and everyone knows it.

ALSO READ: Making Sense Of Pakistan Current Chaos

Creating new hope of preserving Lahore’s cultural heritage on one hand and giving a “political push” in Balochistan is Mian Nawaz Sharif. The country’s longest-serving prime minister, for nine years, has been ousted thrice. Each time, his dismissal, embellished by graft charges and followed by imprisonment, has been ‘managed’ or ‘engineered’ by the ‘establishment’, it is widely believed and written about. Under Pervez Musharraf’s leadership, it staged a coup and saw him out of the country for nine years. But Zulfiqar Bhutto, undoubtedly, is an earlier and a better example, since his hand-picked Army Chief, General Ziaul Haq, had him hanged. So also, daughter Benazir, assassinated under Musharraf’s watch.

Take the establishment’s current bête noire, Imran Khan. Like the Bhuttos and Sharifs at one time or the other, his political pitchfork happened when the establishment decided to use his name and fame as a handsome cricketing hero who remains among the most well-known Pakistanis outside the country. The idea was to cut down the Bhuttos and the Sharifs to size.

This was a cardinal mistake, it is loath to acknowledge. Khan made too many mistakes and showed himself as an unreliable maverick. In politics, he took himself rather seriously, more than the more seasoned Bhuttos and Sharifs would have, or do. A civilian messiah under the military is not on.

The establishment was not ready for a western-educated man, enjoying the charisma of a world-class cricketer and once married to a British heiress, also adapting to the ways of the conservative Muslim clergy with open empathy for the Taliban. Worse, a third wife with supposed spiritual powers. The ‘Kaptan’ cannot be easily slotted, and hence is difficult to politically slaughter.

Khan, despite his British connections, developed strong anti-West postures. Voted out of power – some credit it to the US for the ‘offence’ of meeting Russia’s Putin on the day the latter launched his Ukraine campaign – Khan turned a huge America-baiter. There was and there is no verifiable evidence to show. But he called the Americans names at public rallies, something none of his predecessors had done. His conciliatory denials from the jail do not appear to have cut much ice with Washington.

Khan’s supporters attacked key army offices in May 2023 when he was arrested. That included the destruction of a museum where war trophies won during the 1965 conflict with India. For Pakistan’s military, this was the last straw.

The establishment did not bargain for Khan’s charisma and popularity, especially among the rising and vocal middle classes who are seeking a change away from the older lot. To its chagrin, Khan retains much of it, adopting guerilla tactics from the jail, even ready to talk, but ‘his’ terms, with the current army chief whom he once targeted.

Despite being in jail for almost two years and slapped with multiple convictions, Khan supposedly retains his political constituency, plus support of the younger soldiers. His continued popularity despite curbs is by itself a testimony of the failure of the Bhuttos and the Sharifs who occupy top constitutional offices at the federal level, besides the chief ministership of the powerful Punjab province.

Khan has a strong lobby abroad. Now his supporters, projecting him as a prisoner of conscience, his human rights curbed, have nominated him for a Nobel Prize.

Keeping him in jail has not worked, and letting him out is risky.

How to solve a problem like Imran Khan that, as the political saying goes – and with ample justification – in a country that is governed by “Allah, Army and America” – not necessarily in that order?
