Trump Unveils USD 175 Billion ‘Golden Dome’ Missile Defence Plan For US

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (local time) announced new details about his administration’s USD 175 billion large-scale missile defence initiative, the “Golden Dome”, noting that it would be fully operational in under three years, as reported by The Hill.

According to The Hill, Trump, while speaking from the Oval Office, said that the US had finalised the system’s architecture, which will be overseen by Vice Chief of Space Operations General Michael Guetlein.

Trump claimed the defence shield would integrate seamlessly with existing capabilities and be completed before the end of his second term.

“This design for the Golden Dome will integrate with our existing defence capabilities and should be fully operational before the end of my term. So we’ll have it done in about three years,” Trump said, as quoted by The Hill.

“Once fully constructed, Golden Dome will be capable of intercepting missiles even if they are launched from other sides of the world and even if they are launched from space, and we will have the best system ever built,” he added.

Trump also noted that Canada has shown interest in joining the initiative and expressed openness to collaboration.

During the announcement, Trump was joined by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and GOP Senators Dan Sullivan, Jim Banks, and Kevin Cramer. They were flanked by posters showing a golden shield over the US and a quote, “This is a Very Dangerous World,” as reported by The Hill.

As per The Hill, the Golden Dome, initially announced in January, will receive a preliminary USD 25 billion allocation under a GOP-backed reconciliation bill. However, funding remains uncertain amid resistance from both conservative and moderate Republicans who are pushing for changes to the legislation.

Though Trump claimed the total cost would be USD 175 billion, the Congressional Budget Office has estimated that, due to its technological complexity, the full system could exceed USD 500 billion over the next two decades.

The system is expected to counter intercontinental threats from nations like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea.

Democrats have raised ethical concerns about the potential involvement of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, citing his advisory role in the Trump administration and possible conflicts of interest, The Hill reported.

Trump mentioned several states that are likely to participate in the programme, including Alaska, Florida, Georgia, and Indiana, each with defence or space infrastructure. Potential contractors could include Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and L3Harris Technologies.

Insisting the project would be entirely made in the US, Trump said it would be modelled after Israel’s Iron Dome, though scaled up to counter long-range threats.

While critics argue that the US already has strong missile defences, such as interceptors in Alaska and air defence systems like Terminal High Altitude Area Defence and NASAMS, Trump maintained that the Golden Dome would add a critical new layer of protection.

Trump also noted that the “Golden Dome” initiative was something that Ronald Reagan, the 40th US President and a Republican, would want. He further reiterated his campaign promise to the American people to build such a missile defence shield to protect against foreign threats.

“Ronald Reagan (40th US President) wanted it many years ago, but they didn’t have the technology. But it’s something we’re going to have. We’re going to have it at the highest level…In the campaign, I promised the American people that I would build a cutting-edge missile defence shield to protect our homeland from the threat of foreign missile attack. And that’s what we’re doing today,” Trump stated. (ANI)

‘Reminding Us Of Sridevi,’ Say Fans As They Hail Janhvi Kapoor’s Cannes Debut Look

That’s what Bollywood star Janhvi Kapoor literally meant with her Cannes debut.

On Tuesday night, Janhvi walked the iconic red carpet of the prestigious film festival with the team of her film, Homebound. She left no stone unturned to steal attention with her outfit.

Dressed in ace designer Tarun Tahiliani’s custom outfit, Janhvi looked like a vision in pink. She wore a long pleated skirt and corset crafted in tissue, specially woven in Benaras. Rhea Kapoor styled the ensemble. She elevated the attire with an integrated duppata-like drape that was attached to her sleek bun.

The surface of the outfit was “brought to life with a hand-crushed technique that lent depth and texture, while a signature TT drape added a touch of sculptural fluidity.”

Janhvi exuded princess vibes. Many fans even said that her look reminded them of her mother and late actress Sridevi.

“It’s giving Sridevi,” a fan wrote under the comment section of the pictures posted by Diet Sabya.

“Reminded me of Sridevi,” another one wrote.

“Really beautiful and elegant dress. And very beautifully worn as well,” a netizen wrote while hailing Janhvi’s Cannes look.

Janhvi accessorised her look with layered pearl necklaces and matching diamond studs. For the glam, she opted for dewy pink blush and a winged eyeliner.

With this customised outfit, Tarun Tahiliani perfectly blended modernity and tradition as it resembles a modern lehenga.

Several clips and pictures from the red carpet appearance of team ‘Homebound’ featuring director Neeraj Ghaywan, actors Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa and producer Karan Johar surfaced online.

In one of the clips, we can see Ishaan and Neeraj holding Janhvi’s hand as she descended the stairs.

Before hitting the red carpet, Janhvi was spotted greeting her fans in Cannes. For the day outing, Janhvi kept it casual yet stylish as she stepped out in the French city in a matching top and skirt by the Italian brand Miu Miu.

Janhvi’s boyfriend, Shikhar Pahariya, and sister, Khushi Kapoor, are also in Cannes to cheer for her at her Cannes debut. (ANI)

US May Consider New Sanctions On Russia If Peace Talks Stall

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday (local time) stated that Russia would be slammed with additional sanctions by Washington if Moscow fails to provide a formal proposal outlining its conditions for a ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as reported by Anadolu Agency.

Speaking before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Rubio said that such a delay from Russia would show Moscow’s real intent to negotiate on the matter.

“It’s our understanding that the Russians are going to write up terms for what they would require in order to reach a ceasefire that then would allow broader negotiations,” Rubio told the Senate Committee as quoted by Anadolu Agency.

“We await those terms, and then I’ll have a much better understanding about Mr. Putin’s calculation once we see what those terms look like,” he added.

When asked about the possibility of new sanctions, Rubio said such measures are likely if Russia appears unwilling to pursue peace and continues the war effort.

“If it is clear that the Russians are not interested in a peace deal and they just want to keep fighting a war, it may very well come to that point,” he noted, as quoted by Anadolu Agency.

However, Rubio emphasised that US President Donald Trump prefers not to threaten sanctions at this stage, fearing it could derail the diplomatic process.

“The president believes that right now, if you start threatening sanctions, the Russians will stop talking,” Rubio said as quoted by Anadolu Agency.

Rubio added that Trump is “very committed” to ending the conflict and wants to maintain the ability to influence both parties toward a peaceful resolution for as long as possible.

Earlier on Monday, US President Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine would “immediately” begin negotiations toward a ceasefire and a potential end to the ongoing war after his two-hour-long call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He disclosed that the Vatican, represented by newly elected Pope Leo XIV, has expressed interest in hosting the negotiations.

This proposal aligns with the Pope’s offer on May 16 to facilitate peace talks after the recent failure of ceasefire talks in Istanbul, despite the agreement to exchange prisoners between the two nations. (ANI)

US Intel Points To Possible Israeli Strike On Iran Nuclear Sites Amid Diplomatic Push

The United States has gathered new intelligence suggesting that Israel is actively preparing for a potential military strike against Iranian nuclear facilities, even as President Donald Trump’s administration continues its diplomatic efforts with Tehran, CNN reported, citing multiple US officials on Tuesday (local time).

While Israel appears not to have made a final decision, CNN, citing officials familiar with the intelligence, has reported that the likelihood of a strike has increased substantially in recent months.

They noted that whether Israel moves forward will largely hinge on the outcome of ongoing US-Iran negotiations regarding Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.

A source cited by CNN said that “the chance of an Israeli strike on an Iranian nuclear facility has gone up significantly,” particularly if Washington’s deal fails to curb Iran’s uranium enrichment fully.

The US assessment is based on both intercepted Israeli communications and visible military movements, including the repositioning of aerial munitions and the completion of a major Israeli air exercise, as reported by CNN.

However, officials also warned that these moves could be part of a broader Israeli effort to pressure Iran diplomatically, rather than a sign of imminent military action.

As per CNN, any such attack would mark a serious divergence from Trump’s current diplomacy strategy and could risk triggering wider conflict across the already-volatile Middle East. Since the outbreak of the Gaza war in 2023, the US has sought to avoid such escalation.

President Trump has threatened military action if talks with Iran fail, but has publicly committed to diplomacy in the short term.

According to CNN, in March, Trump sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, giving Tehran a 60-day deadline to reach a deal. That deadline has passed, and it has been over five weeks since the talks began.

Meanwhile, a senior Western diplomat told CNN that Trump, in a recent meeting, signalled he would allow only a few more weeks for the negotiations to succeed before considering military options.

Israel, meanwhile, is navigating difficult choices. As per CNN, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is under pressure to prevent a US-Iran deal he considers weak, without straining the country’s strategic alliance with Washington. (ANI)

‘100% Can’t Happen Without Paresh Rawal,’: Suniel Shetty On Hera Pheri 3

The OG trio of ‘Hera Pheri’ — Raju, Shyam, and Baburao Ganpatrao Apte, aka Babu Bhaiya — has been loved by fans across the globe for over two decades now.

When Paresh Rawal, who played the iconic Baburao Ganpatrao Apte in the film, recently confirmed he would not be a part of ‘Hera Pheri 3,’ fans weren’t the only ones heartbroken. Rawal’s sudden exit from the popular franchise was also a big blow to actor Suniel Shetty, who played the calm and collected Shyam in the classic comedy.

Suniel, while speaking to ANI, expressed his “shock” over Rawal’s exit. He said he was left “completely heartbroken” after hearing the news.

“I mean, it’s an absolute shock to me, and I’m here because I heard it yesterday, and then today, some more news came about. So, I need to call and find out, and I’m completely heartbroken because if there was one film that I was looking forward to, it was Hera Pheri, you know,” Shetty.

Suniel also made it clear that he feels a third instalment cannot happen without ‘Babu Bhaiya.’

“It cannot happen. 100 per cent cannot happen without Paresh Rawal. It can have 1 per cent chance without me and Akshay, but 100% can’t happen without Paresh ji. No, it doesn’t. Raju and Shyam, if they’re not hammered by Babu here, it doesn’t work,” he added.

Last week, Rawal posted a note on X (formerly Twitter) to confirm that he won’t be part of the third installment and clarify that his exit wasn’t due to any creative disagreement.

“I wish to put it on record that my decision to step away from Hera Pheri 3 was not due to creative differences,” he wrote on X, adding, “I REITERATE THAT THERE ARE NO CREATIVE DISAGREEMENTS WITH THE FILMMAKER. I hold immense love, respect, and faith in Mr. Priyadarshan, the film’s director,” Rawal wrote on X.

Directed by Priyadarshan, ‘Hera Pheri’ was released in 2000. It featured Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Paresh Rawal, and Tabu in the lead roles. The second part, which came out in 2006, was directed by the late Neeraj Vora. It featured Akshay, Paresh, Suniel, Bipasha Basu, Rajpal Yadav, and Rimi Sen in the lead roles. (ANI)
