Varun, Parineeti Urge Citizens To Stop Spreading Fake News Amid India-Pak Tension

Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, Bollywood celebrities Varun Dhawan and Parineeti Chopra urged citizens to rely on verified sources and not fall prey to fake news.

“Let’s spread correct information only,” Varun posted on Instagram Story.

Parineeti also took to Instagram Story and asked people to stop spreading fake news.

“The worst we can do right now is spread fake news and terrify the people who are watching. Let’s rely on official updates and nothing else. Report responsibly,” she wrote.

Actor Sonakshi Sinha criticised news channels for sensationalising the India-Pakistan conflict.

“”Our news channels are a joke! I’m so done with these over-dramatised visuals and sound effects, the screaming and shouting! What are you’ll doing? Just do your job, report facts as they are. Stop sensationalising WAR and creating panic in people who are anyway anxious, for God’s sake,” she posted.

India and Pakistan have been at loggerheads with each other after terrorist camps were destroyed at nine locations in the neighbouring country under Operation Sindoor, which was launched in response to the ghastly Pahalgam terrorist attack.

Indian Army during the intervening night of May 8 and May 9 has successfully repelled and responded to multiple drone attacks by Pakistan along the western border and the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Indian Army said, “Pakistan Armed Forces launched multiple attacks using drones and other munitions along the entire Western Border on the intervening night of 08 and 09 May 2025. Pak troops also resorted to numerous cease fire violations (CFVs) along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. The drone attacks were effectively repulsed and befitting reply was given to the CFVs.Indian Army remains committed to safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Nation. All nefarious designs will be responded to with force.

The indigenously developed Akash surface-to-air missile air defence system has played a crucial role in thwarting Pakistani drone attacks targeting Indian assets on Thursday, according to defence officials. Officials added that both the Indian Army and Air Force have deployed the missile system along the Pakistan border. (ANI)

Jai Hind Yatra: Cong Shows Solidarity With Armed Forces

ongress leader Sachin Pilot on Friday voiced his support for the central government and praised the courage of the armed forces, stating that the Indian Army’s valour knows no bounds and that the nation stands united, rising above political differences.

Speaking to ANI, Congress leader Sachin Pilot said, “The time has come when terrorism is uprooted. The killing of innocents in Pahalgam was an attack on India’s soul. There is no limit to the Indian Army’s valour and I am proud to be an Indian. We fully support the government. The forces are giving befitting reply to the illicit activities of Pakistan on Indian border.”

“Not only is this Jai Hind Yatra dedicated to the soldiers and their families. The entire country stands united beyond politics,” said Pilot.

Citing historical precedents of bipartisan support during wartime, Pilot recalled, “Sonia Gandhi supported Atal Bihari Vajpayee during the Kargil War, and Vajpayee had once described Indira Gandhi as ‘Durga’ for her leadership in war.”

Adding further, he said, “All the people of the border villages and cities are taking precautions, following the guidelines that the government and administration are providing. No one is afraid. Everyone’s morale is high.”

This comes after Congress party held a ‘Jai Hind Yatra’ in all Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) units on Friday to express solidarity with the armed forces amid India-Pakistan tensions in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor.

The Jai Hind Yatra, marked by slogans of unity and patriotic fervour, drew participation from various walks of life, sending a message of strength and solidarity in a time of national challenge.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary spoke about the yatra held by the party and said, “All the people of the country demanded immediate action in response to the cowardly attacks on the tourists in Pahalgam. Our Indian armed forces took revenge by destroying terror bases and all the people support it. We have expressed our support to the Prime Minister. All the Prime Ministers have always taken appropriate action for the security of the country, as is happening now.”

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari also voiced the sentiment of the party, expressing solidarity with the army and said, “In the all-party meeting, it was decided that strict action should be taken against those who killed innocent people in Pahalgam. We continue to support whatever decision the Indian Armed Forces take…The nation is standing in support of the Armed Forces.”

Every Indian citizen is against the attack that has been carried out at the spirit of our country. This tirangaa yatra is for boosting the morale of our forces.”

Congress MP Digvijay Singh also joined in with the party’s yatra in Bhopal and said, “There was no attack on any civilian property, all the terror bases were only targeted… We are proud of our armed forces… The way armed forces of Pakistan were present in the funeral ceremony of terror mastermind Masood Azhar’s family shows that they are in support of terrorism…”

Congress leader Mumtaz Patel who also participated in the yatra here in the national capital said, “We want to give the message that the nation is united and we are with the government and the armed forces.”

Similarly, Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee organised a Tiranga Yatra rally in Jaipur to show solidarity with the Indian armed forces amid India-Pakistan tensions.

On Thursday, the Centre called the all-party meeting over Operation Sindoor at the Parliament Annexe building. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh briefed political parties on India’s action on cross-border terrorism.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister JP Nadda, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi are among several other leaders who participated in the meeting.

Meanwhile, amid the rising tension between India and Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met a group of armed forces veterans on Friday and had an extensive interaction on various issues related to the current situation.

The group included former Air Force, Army, and Navy Chiefs and other veterans who have extensively served the country.Earlier today, the Central Government empowered the Chief of Army Staff to call out “every office and every enrolled person” of the Territorial Army on active duty amid escalating tensions with Pakistan.

This decision came under the power conferred Rule 33 of the Territorial Army Rule 1948.According to a notification from the Ministry of Defence, the government has sanctioned 14 out of the existing 32 Infantry Battalions of the Territorial Army for deployment in the areas of Southern Command, Eastern Command, Western Command, Central Command, Northern Command, South Western Command, Andaman and Nicobar Command, and the Army.

Pakistan on Thursday night launched a series of coordinated drone and missile attacks along India’s western border, targeting regions in Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan. According to Indian defense officials, the attacks were largely intercepted by India’s air defence systems, including the S-400 missile defense system, preventing significant damage.

This comes after India conducted Operation Sindoor earlier this week, which targeted terrorist camps in Pakistan following a deadly terrorist attack in Kashmir that killed 26 tourists on April 22.

The situation remains volatile, with international calls for restraint and diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation. (ANI)

Sitharaman Reviews Banking Sector Preparedness Amidst Borders Tension

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday convened a high-level meeting with the Managing Directors and CEOs of Public and Private sector banks and insurance companies amidst emerging security concerns arising from tensions at the western border.

Senior officials from the Department of Financial Services (Ministry of Finance), CERT-In, RBI, IRDAI and NPCI attended the meeting, which focused on reviewing the banking sector’s operational and cybersecurity preparedness, including digital public-facing applications such as internet banking and UPI, as per a statement from the Ministry of Finance.

The Managing Directors and CEOs of all the Banks and Insurance Companies apprised the Union Finance Minister about the measures they are undertaking, given the ongoing tensions at the border.

Bank MDs and CEOs informed that cybersecurity measures have been reinforced throughout the banking system.

Anti-DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) systems have been implemented by banks to protect against massive cyber-attacks.

To guarantee institutional readiness, mock drills have been held encompassing cybersecurity and disaster recovery scenarios at the highest levels.

They apprised that phishing attempts are being actively watched, and staff members have received several internal alerts to increase awareness.

Bank officials stated that their Security Operations Centre (SOC) and Network Operations Centres are fully operational and on high alert.

These centres are coordinating closely with CERT-In and the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC), facilitating real-time data sharing and threat monitoring.

During the meeting, the Finance Minister stressed the critical role of the banking and financial sector in ensuring economic stability during heightened geopolitical tensions and challenging times.

She directed all banks to remain fully alert and prepared to deal with any eventuality or crisis, ensuring uninterrupted access to banking and financial services for citizens and businesses across the country, especially in border areas.

She remarked that banking services, both physical and digital, must function without disruption and glitches.

The Union Finance Minister remarked that emergency protocols should be updated and tested to handle any arising contingencies.

The Finance Minister expressed deep concern about the safety of bank employees and their families working at branches around the border areas.

She directed banks to ensure their adequate safety by effectively coordinating with the security agencies.

She asked Banks to ensure that citizens and businesses do not suffer under any circumstances, and priority must be given to seamless cash availability at ATMs, uninterrupted UPI and internet banking services, and continued access to essential banking facilities.

Nirmala Sitharaman directed banks to conduct regular audits of their cybersecurity systems and data centres and ensure that all digital and core banking infrastructure is fully firewalled and monitored round the clock to prevent breaches or any hostile cyber activity.

The FM instructed banks to designate two dedicated senior officials identified at the headquarters, one for reporting all cyber-related matters and the other to ensure operational matters, including the functioning of bank branches and the availability of cash in ATMs. Both dedicated officers should report any incident to CERT-In / relevant agencies and DFS on a real-time basis.

In this regard, Banks were also asked to coordinate in real time with the Reserve Bank of India, CERT-In and relevant Government agencies to ensure robust and agile information exchange and response.

The Finance Minister also directed insurance companies to ensure timely claim settlements and uninterrupted customer service.

The Finance Minister mentioned that the Sponsor Banks should ensure that RRBs are well-supported during these times and hand-hold them for any issues that they are facing.

Nirmala Sitharaman reiterated that the Government is firmly committed to national security and economic stability, noting that the country’s banking and financial system remains robust and resilient. (ANI)

EU Teams Will Be In Delhi For FTA Negotiations Next Week: Envoy Delphin

Ambassador of the Delegation of the European Union to India, Herve Delphin, on Friday said that the negotiating teams from the bloc will be India next week.

“…The negotiation of a substantive free trade agreement represents a central plan in our relationship. Our leaders have directed the negotiating teams to conclude the negotiation by the end of the year. Both sides are fully committed to reaching this goal. It is a matter of necessity as much as urgency. Next week, the negotiating teams will meet here in Delhi and it is our sincere hope that it will represent a major milestone towards an agreement,” the EU envoy to India said, speaking at the Europe Day celebrations here in the national capital.

“The strength of EU and India economic and business ties cannot be understated. The EU is the largest trading partner of India…with this FTA it has the potential to grow exponentially,” Delphin added.

On 17 June 2022, the European Union relaunched negotiations with India for a Free Trade Agreement, and launched separate negotiations for an Investment Protection Agreement and an Agreement on Geographical Indications (GIs).

The EU is India’s largest trading partner, accounting for Euro 124 billion worth of trade in goods in 2023 or 12.2 per cent of total Indian trade. India is the EU’s 9th largest trading partner, accounting for 2.2 per cent of the EU’s total trade in goods in 2023. Trade in services between the EU and India reached Euro 59.7 billion in 2023, up from Euro 30.4 billion in 2020.

India and EU are commited to conclude an ambitious FTA by the end of 2025, India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry

said earlier this month.

This commitment builds on the strategic direction given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen during the landmark visit of the EU College of Commissioners to New Delhi in February 2025.

Both sides reiterated their aim to address pending issues in a spirit of mutual respect and pragmatism, including at the next round scheduled to be held from 12-16 May 2025 in New Delhi, the commerce ministry statement had said.

India emphasized that meaningful progress in trade negotiations requires equal focus on non-tariff barriers (NTBs) alongside tariff discussions and regulatory frameworks must be inclusive, proportionate, and avoid restricting trade. (ANI)

Meanwhile, in a major escalation along India’s western front, the Pakistani army carried out multiple airspace violations and drone intrusions on the night of May 7 and 8, targeting Indian military infrastructure.

Addressing a press briefing on Friday, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi revealed that 300 to 400 drones were deployed across 36 locations, with several being shot down by Indian forces using both kinetic and non-kinetic methods. Initial investigations suggest the drones were Turkish-made Asisguard Songar models.

Colonel Sofiya Qureshi said during the press briefing, “On the night of May 7 and 8, the Pakistani army violated Indian airspace several times over the entire western border to target military infrastructure. Not only this, the Pakistani army also fired heavy-calibre weapons along the Line of Control. Around 300 to 400 drones were used to attempt infiltration at 36 locations.”

She added, “The Indian armed forces shot down many of these drones using kinetic and non-kinetic means. The possible purpose of such large-scale aerial intrusions was to test air defence systems and collect intelligence. Forensic investigation of the wreckage of the drones is being done. Initial reports suggest that they are Turkish Asisguard Songar drones…”

Escalating its tensions with India, Pakistan targeted Jammu using Hamas-style missiles to target multiple areas on Thursday, defence sources had told ANI.

The sources said the attack resembled a Hamas-style operation in Israel, where multiple cheap rockets were used to target cities.

Pakistan’s attempted retaliation came in the wake of India’s Operation Sindoor, where the Indian armed forces targeted nine terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on Wednesday.

The operation was a direct response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

Earlier on Thursday, the Indian Army had shot down more than 50 Pakistani drones during a large-scale counter-drone operation along the LoC and International Borders (IB), sources told ANI.

The Indian Armed Forces also successfully neutralised Pakistan military’s attempts at a large-scale drone and missile attack on multiple Indian military installations across Northern and Western India during the night of May 7-8, and an Air Defence system at Lahore was neutralised. (ANI)

Why Khan Market Is Losing Business

The three Khans of Bollywood, who incidentally are of identical age soon to step into their sixties are no longer a guarantee of box office success. Featured in a number of successful films in terms of revenues and profits but only occasionally for cinematic excellence over many years, they to their mortification are finding, whatever their fan base, that the Khans being in lead roles will not ensure the cash register ringing.

Think of the kind of losses the financers will have to incur if a Khan film fails to draw the crowd to theatres, considering the enormity of budget. The bratty Salman Khan, who has made it a practice to take off his shirt at the slightest provocation on the screen and indulge in unworldly heroics, must be greatly distressed that his Eid release Sikander has failed to pull the public to the surviving single screen cinema halls and multiplexes, no longer confined to big cities.

Reviews of the film in English and regional language newspapers, one without exception were highly critical of everything about Sikander from the story to direction to acting. What a comedown from Salman’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015 release), which at well over ₹900 crore was among the highest all-time grossers of Bollywood films. But Salman is not alone in the hot spot. Aamir Khan, who is said to be very selective in choosing films and a perfectionist in whatever he does, had had a major disappointment with Thugs of Hindostan (2018) and Laal Singh Chadda the following year. The two films bombed at the box office putting an end to the myth that the large army of Aamir loyalists will ever underpin the success of any Aamir film outing.

He may be King Khan, arguably with a net worth well ahead of other Bollywood stars, but Shah Rukh Khan too had many occasions to bite the dust with a number of his films not finding favour with the public. Among the SRK films that bombed at the box office are Jab Harry Met Sejal, Zero, Dear Zindagi, Fan, Asoka, Guddu, English Babu Desi Mem and Swades. He will always look back with disappointment at the long list of his films rejected by the public.

The Khans are largely passe after dominating the screen for over three decades. To once again become relevant, they will have to rediscover themselves and do roles conforming to their age. Bollywood big stars, directors and producers will do themselves a service by recognising that the audience has matured and they want film stories relatable to their milieu. Not the Khans alone, the other big Bollywood stars had to eat humble pie more often than in recent years with their film releases meeting with poor box office collections, falling way short of production the cost.

There are occasions when thin turnout of viewers will force multiplexes to withdraw films within days of their release. Referring to the disappointing performance of the Hindi film industry, a spokesperson for Ormax Media says: “The industry experienced a 13 per cent fall in 2024 box office revenue to ₹4,679 crore from the previous year’s ₹5,380 crore.” This doesn’t tell the whole story of industry woes, for over 30 per cent of revenue came from successes of south Indian films dubbed in Hindi.

Indian films, particularly the ones in Hindi and South Indian languages earn decent revenues from their showing abroad. The Indian diaspora in the US being 5.2 million strong, the films made here have a thriving market in America. But revenues from Indian film exports to the US will be badly dented if President Trump slaps a 100 per cent tariff on foreign films. Pradeep Dwivedi of Eros International says: “The tariff effectively doubles the cost of importing Indian films to the US. A reduction in Indian film presence in the US theatres could reduce India’s soft power and cultural influence through cinema.” There is no love lost between Trump and Hollywood, which acutely surfaced during the Presidential election campaign.

Describing Hollywood film shooting outside the US a “national security threat,” Trump has set in motion the “process of instituting a 100 per cent tariff on any and all movies coming into our country that are produced in foreign lands.” What Trump is planning to mete out to foreign films, including American movies shot in overseas locations falls in line with his overall protectionist trade policy. Trump doesn’t care that he is universally ridiculed for abandoning free trade. “The movie industry in America is dying a very fast death. Other countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States.” To consider this “a national security threat” is ridiculous, notwithstanding the fact that film and television production in Los Angeles is down more than one-third over the past ten years. Trump has scores to settle with American production houses. But the proposed punishment will do a collateral damage to Indian film industry.

To return to the Khans from Bollywood’s existential crisis, Salman is miffed that the South Indians don’t patronise his films though there is goodwill for him in that part of the country. He is quoted as saying: “When my films releases in the South, the people there will greet me with ‘bhai, bhai,’ but they won’t go to theatres. Whereas here, we have embraced stars from the south and their films perform well because we watch them, be it Rajnikanth, Chiranjeevi Garu, Suriya or Ram Charan. But their fans don’t watch our films.”

It’s high time for the swaggering Salman to realise that not to talk of the South where the stars perform the on-screen heroics far better than their counterparts in Hindi films, in the North too the patronage of films like Sikander is fast shrinking. Except for a few (Hrithik Roshan, Tiger Shroff and Shahid Kapoor) Bollywood actors are no match for the dancing skills of southern stars such as Allu Arjun, Ram Charan, Jr. NTR and Prabhu Deva (described as Indian Michael Jackson). Considering all these factors, Bollywood has no justification to grudge the success of films made in the South. In fact, the Hindi adaptation of southern films has proved a booster for Bollywood, confirming that most of the Hindi releases are bereft of ideas and repetitive.

Aamir Khan and some others in the industry hold the poor footfall in theatres to films being released on OTT soon after making appearances on the big screen. Speaking at a session on ‘Studios of the Future,’ Aamir said: “The immediacy of an OTT release after a theatrical release often leaves the audience with an easy way out – why go to the theatre when the film will be streaming soon… You are telling the audience don’t come (to the theatre). That’s why they are not coming in.”

They can go on arguing about the faulty business model and perhaps the industry will soon set out to make needed reforms. But they may be rest assured that for the industry to pull back people to theatres, it will have to focus on content. Pick up good stories, commission scriptwriters who will do justice to the original while taking liberty for film adoption and then leave things to directors. Hey presto, we will see gems being delivered by Bollywood. That will be the only way to get the crowd back at theatres

“Ready to sacrifice myself; will go to Pakistan as suicide bomber”: K’taka Min BZ Ahmed

Asserting that he is ready to sacrifice his life for the country, Karnataka Minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan on Friday said that if the central government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi permit, he will go to Pakistan as a “suicide bomber.”

“I am ready to sacrifice myself for the country. If the central government and the Prime Minister permit, I will go to Pakistan as a suicide bomber… We (Indian muslims) have nothing to do with Pakistan, we hate it,” Karnataka Minister said.

Earlier today, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh conducted a review of the country’s current security situation at South Block, which houses the Ministry of Defence, in the national capital, in the aftermath of the foiled large-scale drone strike by Pakistan on Thursday.
