Gujarat: Gates Of Khambhada Dam Opened In Botad As Water Level Rises Following Downpour

The gates of the Khambhada Dam in Botad district of Gujarat were opened on Tuesday due to a significant rise in water levels following incessant rainfall, exacerbating severe waterlogging across the region.

The downpour has led to the closure of Gadgda Road near the Botad Circle and the flooding of urban and rural areas in Gadhada, prompting extensive rescue operations and the relocation of residents and their farm animals to safety.

The situation in Botad is part of a broader weather crisis affecting Gujarat, with Amreli district also experiencing severe impacts.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Barwala, Sanjay Chaudhari, said that the district received 7.5 inches of rainfall in the last 24 hours, leading to the evacuation of 40 people downstream to a shelter home, along with a few from Ranpur tehsil.

“In the last 24 hours, we have received 7.5 inches of rainfall. 40 people living downstream have been shifted to a shelter home. A few people from Ranpur tehsil have also been shifted. There have been no casualties until now. We are in constant touch with the public. Teams of doctors have been deployed for ailing people and pregnant women,” Chaudhari stated.

In Amreli, District Magistrate Ajay Dahiya highlighted the scale of the crisis, noting that rural areas are flooded due to heavy rainfall, prompting multiple rescue operations, including IAF helicopter and Coast Guard assistance.

He noted that three dams overflowed on Monday, which increased to five today, necessitating alerts and evacuation preparations.

“Amreli has received heavy rainfall, due to which rural areas are flooded. 2-3 major rescue operations were carried out, like a private bus with 6 people on board got stuck on the border of Amreli and Bhavnagar. I immediately informed the State Emergency Operations about the incident, and an IAF helicopter took off for rescue… All 6 people were rescued. Similarly, 24 labourers from a work site in Rajula were rescued with the help of the Indian Coast Guard. Apart from this, rescue operations have been carried out in eight different places… Yesterday 3 dams overflowed in Amreli and we immediately alerted the villages. 5 dams are overflowing today and if it increases, we will prepare for evacuation apart from the issuing alert in the downstream villages… We appeal to people to avoid driving in places where water is overflowing, even in walking in farm areas to prevent lightning strikes,” Dahiya said.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department today issued a red alert with extremely heavy rainfall (>20 cm) lashing across the state of Gujarat in the next 24 hours. (ANI)

We Doubt Their Intention To Fulfil This Promise Regarding Caste Census: Sachin Pilot

Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Tuesday questioned the intention of the BJP-led Union government over the caste census, accusing them of delaying the exercise earlier by citing COVID as an excuse.

On caste census, Congress leader Sachin Pilot told reporters, “BJP and PM Modi had earlier said that the demand for a caste census is being raised by ‘Urban Naxals’, and they even mentioned in parliament in writing that they do not want to conduct it. After pressure from the opposition, they suddenly accepted our demand. But the notification now says the census will be conducted in 2027.

He also questioned the budget allocation to start the exercise in 2027.

“Earlier, they delayed it using COVID as an excuse, and even now, we doubt their intention to fulfil this promise. Around Rs 8,000-10,000 crore is usually spent on the census, but this government has allocated only Rs 570 crore in the budget”

He stated that the caste census ensures that the government schemes’ benefits reach every beneficiary.

“The caste census is not just to know a person’s caste — it is to ensure that government schemes are reaching the people, to check whether they are benefiting from them, and to understand the employment rate…”

The notification to conduct the Census was published in the official Gazette on Monday, following a high-level meeting held in Delhi, where the Home Minister reviewed the plan along with the Union Home Secretary, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India (RG&CCI), and other senior officials.

The Population Census 2027 will begin with a reference date of March 1, 2027, for most parts of the country. The reference date for snow-bound and non-synchronous areas such as Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand will be October 1, 2026. (ANI)

Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi said on Tuesday that the DNA samples of 144 victims in the Air India plane crash has been successfully matched.

Muzaffar Ali Talks About Rekha’s Iconic Performance In ‘Umrao Jaan’

Celebrated filmmaker Muzaffar Ali recently opened up about the re-release of his cinematic masterpiece, ‘Umrao Jaan’, in theatres. Known for its poetic storytelling, soulful music, and cultural richness, Umrao Jaan continues to captivate audiences decades after its original release.

In a conversation with ANI, Ali responded with a philosophical insight when asked if films rooted in poetry, music, and history still have a place in today’s fast-paced world.

He said, “Art has to have the pace of the heart. It’s always going to be time-taking and intense if it’s meant to be far-reaching. You cannot blame the world and create poor art. True art has its own rhythm and will always resonate with those who seek it.”

Ali’s collaboration with the legendary Rekha, who portrayed the iconic role of Umrao Jaan, remains one of the highlights of the film.

Reflecting on his experience working with her, Ali described it as “working with a dream.”

He shared, “Rekha was dreaming alongside me. Before I could think of something, she would already be on it, living the character. She became Umrao beyond my expectations, embodying her pain and the cultural ethos of the time. It was more than just acting; it was a transformation.”

On what made Rekha’s portrayal of Umrao unforgettable, Ali explained, “The challenge was to understand the pain of Umrao, to understand what it meant to be a woman in that era. Rekha did not merely play the character; she became Umrao. The pain, the artistry, and the complexities of her role came to her naturally, and she internalized it deeply.”

Discussing the relevance of classic storytelling in modern cinema, Ali emphasised the importance of internalising the story before translating it to the screen.

“You have to forget it’s for cinema for a moment. You need to feel the story, its tactile and intangible dimensions. When you do that, the story will naturally find its cinematic form,” he said, adding, “The essence of the film comes from the people. It has a life of its own, passed down from one generation to another. This is why Umrao Jaan feels like it’s being born again.”

As the film prepares for its re-release, Ali expressed hope that the younger generation would connect with its timeless themes.

“This is a one-to-one film. The intensity of the individual scene will grow as people relate to it personally,” he said, adding, “The collective experience will stem from what they’ve heard, and then they’ll want to see it for themselves.”

In addition to the re-release, a Coffee Table book chronicling the film’s journey is set to be released.

Ali shared how the book came into being, calling it a “milestone.”

“We had the opportunity to work with Kamath Photo Flash, and the archives became valuable. We even grabbed frames from the restoration process, which is a rare privilege,” he said.

“The book is a visual treat. It’s for collectors, students, and lovers of cinema. It’s a deep dive into the story, the time, and the artistic elements that made the film what it is,” he added.

Ali also touched on the connection between Umrao Jaan and his fashion label, House of Kotwara.

“Umrao Jaan is a story told through textiles. These clothes have a legacy, they aren’t bought, they come from families, from places, from culture. As a painter, I could see the hues in the fabrics telling the story and conveying emotions,” he explained, adding, “The philosophy of House of Kotwara is about empowering women through craft, and that empowerment is embodied in the film as well.”

With its blend of history, art, and emotional depth, ‘Umrao Jaan’ remains a monumental piece of Indian cinema.

‘Umrao Jaan’ is a classic Indian period drama adapted into two film versions. The 1981 version, starring Rekha, is a cult classic and won four National Awards.

The 2006 version, starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, was not well received by the audience. Both films are based on Mirza Hadi Ruswa’s novel Umrao Jaan Ada. (ANI)

‘Kashmir Vande Bharat Is A Welcome Step; But Many More Miles To Go’

Irat Bhat, a student from J&K pursuing her post-graduate degree in Aligarh Muslim University, says the new Vande Bharat rail link has been met with enthusiasm from Kashmiris. Her views

Will the all-weather Katra-Srinagar rail link help the people of Jammu and Kashmir? Yes. Absolutely. The completion of the rail link is a monumental development for Jammu and Kashmir. This all-weather connectivity is poised to significantly reduce travel time between Katra and Srinagar, cutting it from over five hours to approximately three. This improvement is especially beneficial for students and low-income travelers who often resort to expensive air travel or endure long, arduous bus journeys due to the frequent closure of the Jammu-Srinagar highway caused by landslides and weather conditions.

From a personal standpoint, I had eagerly awaited the commencement of this train service. However, by the time it began operations, I had already returned home. The delay in its launch affected my travel plans, compelling me to reroute my journey. Nonetheless, I believe this rail link will bring much-needed relief to many, offering a safer, more affordable, and efficient mode of transportation.

The sentiment among Kashmiris regarding the rail link is generally positive. The introduction of the Vande Bharat Express on this route has been met with enthusiasm, as evidenced by the overwhelming demand, with all seats booked for the first ten days of its operation.

As a Kashmiri who has traveled extensively by train across India and within the Kashmir Valley, I can attest to the comfort and safety of train journeys. However, during periods of instability, such as the recent tension between India and Pakistan, many of my peers and I opted against train travel due to safety concerns. Instances of harassment and discrimination faced by Kashmiris during such times have made us cautious about our travel choices.

Whether I will travel on this train in the future largely depends on the prevailing political and security situation. In times of peace and stability, I look forward to utilizing this service.

The inauguration of the rail link was indeed a significant event, symbolizing progress and development. However, for many Kashmiris, the celebration of such milestones can feel disconnected from the realities on the ground. The region has faced numerous challenges, including restrictions on media freedom and the stigmatization of its people, especially students, in the aftermath of tragedies like the Pahalgam killings in which innocent tourists were killed by terrorists who escaped. Indeed, local citizens pitched in immediately and whole-heartedly to help the families, gave them shelter and food, and helped them reach their destinations safely.

While infrastructure development is essential, it is equally important to address the underlying issues of human rights, freedom of expression, and the well-being of the people. A balanced approach that considers both development and the restoration of rights would foster a more inclusive and harmonious environment in the entire state.

Public transportation in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in high-altitude regions like Ladakh and Kargil, has historically been a challenge. The difficult terrain, coupled with frequent road blockages due to landslides and snow, has made commuting arduous over the years.

I recall an instance when I was stranded for over six hours on the Jammu National Highway due to a landslide. What should have been a morning’s journey extended into an entire day’s ordeal.

However, there have been positive developments. For instance, the introduction of electric buses in Kargil aims to provide eco-friendly and reliable transportation options.  These initiatives are steps in the right direction, but there is still much to be done to ensure seamless connectivity across the region.

Akal Takht Head Granthi Say, ‘Nothing Wrong In Kanchan Kumari Murder Case

Akal Takht Sahib’s Head Granthi, Giani Malkit Singh, on Tuesday justified the recent murder of social media influencer Kanchan Kumari alias Kamal Kaur stating that “nothing wrong” in what happened and that such incidents were justified for people like her who allegedly defamed the Sikh religion

Addressing reporters here, Giani Malkit Singh said, “…Such a treatment should be meted out to people who defame the Sikh religion; Nothing wrong has happened…”

Kumari’s body was discovered in a car near Bathinda’s Adesh Hospital, days after she was reported missing.

According to Bathinda Superintendent of Police (SP) Narinder Singh, the social media influencer has been identified as Kanchan Kumari, alias Kamal Kaur. He said the police were informed of a “foul smell” emanating from a parked car in Adesh Hospital on June 12. Kumari’s body was found in the back of the seat of her car.

“Yesterday evening, we received a call that a car was parked in Adesh Hospital, and a foul smell was coming from it. A police team reached there – we found the body of a girl in the back seat of that car. In the preliminary investigation, the girl was identified as Kanchan Kumari, alias Kamal Kaur of Ludhiana,” Superintendent of Police Singh told ANI.

The police official further informed that the girl had left her home on June 9 to attend a promotional event. The police were investigating the matter, prioritising ascertaining the cause of her death and catching those responsible, the SP added. Singh asserted that Kumari’s body was dumped in the car after her demise.

“She left her home on June 9 by telling her mother that she would attend a promotional event. The investigation is on. Our priority is to know how her body reached there and who is responsible for her death, and soon, action will be taken against those responsible. It is not the death spot; her body was dumped in the car after death. The car that the girl left her home in belongs to her,” Bathinda SP said.. (ANI)
