‘Ajay Is Hands-on Producer’: Kajol Praises Hubby Role In Horror Movie ‘Maa’

Bollywood couple Kajol and Ajay Devgn have worked together in multiple projects such as ‘Ishq’, ‘Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha’, ‘Dil Kya Kare Kare’, and ‘Tanhaji’.

And now with the upcoming film ‘Maa’, the husband and wife are again all set to entertain the audience. This time, Kajol and Ajay did not share screen space but were deeply involved in making the film by serving the roles of an actor and producer on the mythological horror drama, respectively.

In an interview with ANI, Kajol opened up about collaborating with Ajay on Maa, describing him as “a hands-on producer”.

” He (Ajay) is a very hands-on producer. From script to music and VFX, he has given a lot of attention to every part of this film. I think VFX is a huge part of the film. And, as they say, shooting VFX is a different game…so he has given a lot of detail. He has been a very hands-on producer,” Kajol shared.

Directed by Vishal Furia, ‘Maa’ marks Kajol’s return to the big screen after a three-year hiatus. Her last theatrical release was ‘Salaam Venky’.

Excited about the film, Kajol said, “I am very excited. My film is releasing in theatres after a long time and I am extremely happy about it..Every actor has to reinvent himself/herself with time. I had never thought I would do a horror film, but here we are. I am extremely proud of this film. The script is quite good. I am a big mythological buff. I love our Indian mythology. We have so many stories. So, I think it was one of my favourite stories.”

“I am very grateful that I have done this film. I think we have made a very good film. Now audience will tell….But, Maa ki kasam, humne achi film banai hai,” Kajol laughed.

Presented by Jio Studios and Devgn Films, Maa is produced by Ajay Devgn and Jyoti Deshpande and co-produced by Kumar Mangat Pathak. It will hit the theatres on June 27. (ANI)

‘If Trolls Can Harass An MP Like Mahua Moitra, How Do Ordinary Women Survive?’

Bengaluru-based Aparna Tummalapalli says public gaze on Mahua Moita’s personal life shows how deeply patriarchy and moral policing are embedded in society. Her views:

Trinamool party MP Mahua Moitra has recently been the victim of vicious online trolling regarding her recent nuptials to Pinaki Misra of the BJD party. Several individuals have targeted her for choosing to remarry at a later stage in her life and have even been raising questions about her promiscuous attitudes. What do these online comments say about the mindset of our modern-day society? Is it the long-lasting impact of an established patriarchy, a cultural attitude itself that grant legitimacy to these comments?

To my mind this is a clash of patriarchy and modern-day feminist values. With the advent of modern-day feminism, it is much more acceptable for women to remarry or even have their first marriage later in life. However, India has been slow to adopt these values and has been resistant towards the 21st century liberal ideologies. We often see a clash between the two opposing systems, leading to women being victims of it.

Most individuals are disconcerted and are wary of losing their position of privilege in society as a result of the patriarchy. Hence as a result, project openly sexist behaviours in an attempt to suppress feminism and retain their position of power.

Remarrying in Indian culture: In Indian culture, women are judged based on their ‘purity’, It is often a make-or-break criterion when it comes to arranged marriages, in Indian culture women who are open to exploring their sexuality are often looked down upon or seen as loose. Moreover, marriage is viewed as an extremely sanctimonious institution, and choosing to remarry can be seen as a deliberate violation of that sanctity.

ALSO READ: ‘Chiranjeevi’s Comments Reflect Deep-Rooted Misogyny’

Most individuals would assume that the majority of the online trolls are men. However a quick inspection show a different story. In equal parts, men and women are trolling and subjecting her to sexist remarks. What does this say about women in India and their approach to feminism? Why is it that they are not standing up for a fellow woman who is being subjected to blatant chauvinism?

Misogyny is so ingrained in our society, that even women don’t spare their kin. Feminism is seen as an aggressive, uncompromising and, at times, illogical system of belief that portrays all men in a negative light.

However, this couldn’t be farther from the truth, real feminism is all about equally uplifting all sections in society and working in tandem to achieve unity, the small pockets of neo-feminism and tone-deaf opinions of extremist feminist figures are not to be taken as representation of an entire ideology.

Another vice in today’s age is ageism; people believe that our lives must follow a defined path that is dictated by age restrictions and social norms. Most people have a misplaced belief that at an older age one must have their entire life sorted, and must be “settled down” in order to ease through the final stages of life. However every individual is different, and every individual approaches their life differently, as a society we must accept that regardless of age people are free to make choices that satisfy them, be it following their passion or even pursuing marriage. These attacks also expose the deeper cultural fabric of society, as a culture that is extremely rigid in its ways.

The attacks against Moitra shows a reflection of a society that is still seeped in sexism, atheism and a rigidity to accept new age values. If women in power and influence are subject to such vitriol, then it is safe to hazard a guess about what common women are subject to. It’s perhaps a patriarchal tendency to keep women as muted, restrained and asexual.
The ascetic woman is what society wants!

Public performance of virtue, honour is what even the independent woman is expected to stand by.

A New House For Lord Jagannath!

For the Bengalis, the coastal town Puri in Odisha is a major travel destination. What draws them principally to the seaside temple city is to pay homage to Lord Jagannath at the shrine built in his honour centuries ago and also to make the best of the sea and the beach. In fact, next only to the Odias, the Bengalis constitute the overwhelmingly large percentage of visitors to Puri among all Indians. Take a walk along the Puri beach you will find signages of all shops and restaurants written in Bengali, Odia and English. All these establishments are patronised by the Bengalis.

The Odisha State Tourism Department will confirm the annual growth in tourist inflow from Bengal leaves every other region well behind and more and more well-heeled Bengalis have started visiting Puri. The place now boasts of some excellent hotels and resorts. In the circumstances when a new temple resembling the one at Puri was recently commissioned at West Bengal’s seaside town at Digha, many Bengalis may come to pay their obeisance at the new shrine instead of going to Puri. Since its opening on April 30, inflow of pilgrims and tourists has surged beyond expectation of Mamata Banerjee government and the temple administration.

Donations by the faithful are so high that the administration is installing more and more collection boxes at strategic points in the temple complex. Will a prospering Digha temple then not be at the cost of Puri? We will have the answer after some years. But the more important issue involved in commissioning a temple at Digha is whether a state government should dabble in religion, going to the extent of building a temple.

Religion as long as it remains confined to individuals and there is civilised tolerance of different faiths, peace prevails. But once it spills into public space and attempts are made to assert dominance of a particular religion as we are witnessing here and in some neighbouring countries, religion becomes the reason for strife among communities and also among nations. That then becomes the cause of untold miseries among people and derailing of economic progress.

Our first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru understood the importance of the public faces of the government from the President to ministers not to be involved in religious ceremonies such as inauguration of a temple. But as it would be the case, Nehru could not prevail upon President Rajendra Prasad not to attend the ceremony commissioning the rebuilt Somnath temple in 1951. (The temple in Gujarat was invaded, looted and destroyed more than once. But the most destructive attacks that befell Somnath temple were in 2025AD and then in the following year by Mahmud of Ghazni, a ruler from the Ghaznavid empire.)

At the time of inauguration of Somnath temple, the memories of communal riots and killings in Punjab and Bengal had not yet faded and perhaps the last thing that Nehru wanted was stoking of communal passion in any way. Last year, the three Congress leaders, namely the party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury “respectfully declined” the invitation to attend the much-trumpeted inauguration ceremony of Ram Mandir at Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, since RSS-BJP had made a “political project of the temple.”

Having already complained that the consecration of the idol of Lord Rama was to be done in haste even though the temple construction had remained incomplete for electoral benefits of BJP, the Congress presence in the ceremony was in any case not expected. Ram Mandir might have given the politically embattled Congress to shout the odds, but politicians in the country except for leftists would not spare a thought before using religion for solely electoral benefits. Rahul Gandhi would visit Hindu temples and Arvind Kejriwal recite Hanuman Chalisa.

From Muhammad Ali Jinnah to Shyama Prasad Mukherjee to many present-day BJP leaders, India unfortunately has a long tradition of politicians being cynical about using religion for political gains. Us standing today with communal passions running high in many parts of the country, Nehru had the foresight to say decades ago: “The spectacle of what is called religion, or at any rate organised religion, in India and elsewhere, has filled me with horror and I have frequently condemned it and wished to make a clean sweep of it. Almost always, it seemed to stand for blind belief and reaction, dogma and bigotry, superstition, exploitation and the preservation of vested interests.”

ALSO READ: ‘Mahabodhi Shrine Must Be Handed Over To Buddhists’

Long many years after Nehru made bold to refer to the corrosive influence of religion on acceptable human behaviour, thanks to the pursuit of Hindutva by the ruling regime at the centre and in majority of states, proneness of politicians to fall back on religion instead of scientific reasoning has assumed disturbing proportions.

BJP leaders will not tire of running down Nehru who spent his life in instilling a scientific temper among Indians irrespective of religion. Unfortunately, faith and dogma have triumphed over reason with the saffronites becoming increasingly raucous about promoting one particular religion. Resolutely secular, Nehru advocated and practised that the state should remain immune to religious influences in governance and policy-making. Basically, in matters of state, religion should not have a place. If the Nehruvian principles were followed, then the country would have been spared communal strife and people of different faith would have lived peacefully and prospered.

Why blame RSS-BJP combine alone for mixing religion with politics. Even West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee whose secular credentials have never been in doubt but always has to swat away accusations of favouring the Muslim community for its votes is now found to be pandering to the Hindus, in a balancing act. She is inviting criticism and rightly so for using at least Rs250 crore government fund to build a temple for Lord Jagannath and his siblings Lord Balabhadra and goddess Subhadra.

A replica of the 12th century Puri temple, the shrine at seaside at Digha over 20 acres of land is an architectural marvel. Built with red sandstone quarried from Bansi Paharpur in Rajasthan, the Digha temple being run by ISKON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) is open to people of all faiths unlike Puri temple where only the Hindus could give prayers. All that is fine. But the question that remains is whether India being a secular country should either the central or a state government be involved in building temples or any other places of worship. Whatever Banerjee may say, providing a skywalk at Dakshineswar temple or at Kalighat Kali temple is not the same as building a temple. Pilgrims in great numbers visit Dakshineswar and Kalighat round the year and the government is obliged to strengthen the infrastructure in the two places and also other centres of pilgrimage for the benefit of believers, religion being no factor.

Having built the temple at Digha drawing funds from the state exchequer, Banerjee no doubt was under some kind of pressure to do something major for the second largest religious community in West Bengal. Will not this explain why soon after the inauguration of Digha Jagannath temple, the state government made a major announcement of comprehensive development of 75 sq km Furfura Sharif region. The focus will be on promotion of pilgrimage to the major centre of worship by the Muslims while preserving historical places and structures in improved environmental surroundings. The upshot of all this is that the government should not dabble in religion, whatever the likelihood of electoral dividends. Nehru looks so relevant today.

Whatever be all the considerations to build a shrine for Jagannath at Digha, Banerjee didn’t expect the project would be embroiled in a controversy with Puri’s Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) taking objection to describing the new seaside temple in West Bengal as Digha Jagannath Dham. The chief servitor of Jagannath temple Daitapati Bhabani Das Mohapatra would quote from scriptures to say that the only four Dhams in the country are at Puri, Dwarka, Badrinath and Rameshwaram and “you can’t have a fifth or a sixth Dham.” Moreover, he complains that the West Bengal did not consult either Puri temple authorities or Puri king Gajapati Maharaja or the Orissa government before naming the Digha shrine.

So hurt are the sentiments of Odias that their chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi was constrained to urge his West Bengal counterpart to reconsider describing Digha temple as Dham. He writes: “The name ‘Jagannath Dham’ holds a unique and sacrosanct identity linked to Puri, and its usage in reference to any other temple or location hurts sentiments and emotions of millions of pilgrims besides diluting heritage of Shree Jagannath Dham, Puri.” This is not all. The Odisha government has started the process of securing trade mark rights for phrases like Jagannath Dham, Shree Mandira, Neelachal Dham, Bada Danda and Maha Prasad. The process is time-consuming. Hopefully, the two eastern states will be able to find a solution to the controversy surrounding Dham.

Karnataka Govt Plans To Merge Tumakaru Distt In Bengaluru City

The Karnataka government has begun its efforts to merge the Tumakuru district with Bengaluru city.

The state home minister, G Parameshwara, informed reporters about the development while speaking to them and stated that he had submitted a proposal for the same to the government.

While speaking to the reporters, G Parameshwara said that the government has made preparations to convert Tumakuru into Bengaluru North district.

He informed that Bengaluru’s rapid growth may expand to neighbouring cities such as Tumakuru, Ramanagara, Kolar, and Chikkaballapur.

“In such a situation, there is a difference between Tumkur district and ‘Bengaluru North district.’ For those in New York, ‘Bengaluru North’ is easy to understand. Tumakuru district is somewhere like this. That is why such an effort has been made, G Parameshwara explained.

“Bengaluru city has already grown beyond Nelamangala. Tumakuru can be reached by travelling 30 km from there. Therefore, it would be beneficial to expand the city area”, the Karnataka Home Minister added.

Furthermore, G Parameshwara informed that a proposal to include 14 gram panchayats has been prepared under the jurisdiction of Mahanagara Palike. He added that Tumakuru city will expand its authority in the coming days.

G Parameshwara also hailed state deputy CM DK Shivakumar and said that he has made a good proposal to make Ramanagara city a part of the Bengaluru South district.

“Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar made a good plan and made Ramanagara district the Bengaluru South district. The government has approved this plan and issued an order. As soon as it is called Bengaluru South, its nature changes. Similarly, he said that they will think about how to make Tumakuru district”, he said.

Meanwhile, on Monday, G Parameshwara said that he has requested Union Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to permit the construction of a ‘Welcome’ arch on the National Highway in Tumakuru.

Speaking to reporters at Sadashivanagar, Tumakuru District, the in-charge Minister said that Rs 5 crore has been provided from the Smart City project to build the Welcome arch on the National Highway in Tumakuru. (ANI)

Folks – Your New Test Captain! Gill Poses Before Cricket Series

India’s newly crowned Test captain, Shubman Gill’s photoshoot, took centre stage as the modern-day giants continue to bolster their preparations for the five high-stakes Tests in England, marking the commencement of a new dawn.

After batting wizards Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli bid adieu to Test cricket last month, India was left short on experience. With India bereft of its torchbearers, the management turned to youngsters to mark the beginning of a new era. After their decision, the captaincy baton was passed from Rohit to Gill.

“Folks – your Test captain, Shubman Gill,” BCCI wrote on X while sharing a few pictures of the 25-year-old.

Since arriving in England last week, Gill has been putting in the hard yards. He has faced the searing pace of Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah. Arshdeep Singh, one of the members of India’s fast bowling quartet, was quick to note that the Test captain appeared to be in “good touch”.

Days after his appointment, Gill revealed that he is “overwhelmed” by the emotions and said in a video posted by the BCCI, “As a young kid, when anyone starts playing cricket, they want to play for India, and not just play for India, but play test cricket for India for a very long time. To be able to get this opportunity is a great honour. And like you said, it is a big responsibility.”

The five-test tour of England, starting June 20 at Leeds and lasting until August 2025. With India lining up without its batting bigwigs Rohit and Virat following their retirement from the game’s longest format, the onus lies on the Shubman-led revamped side to prove itself away from home in testing and gruelling English conditions.

The series will be held from June to August 2025, with matches scheduled at Headingley in Leeds, Edgbaston in Birmingham, Lord’s and The Oval in London, and Old Trafford in Manchester.

India’s Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav. Axiom-4 Mission Delayed After Oxygen Leak Detected

SpaceX on Wednesday announced the postponement of the Falcon 9 launch of the Ax-4 mission to the International Space Station (ISS), citing the need for additional time to repair a liquid oxygen (LOx) leak.

“Standing down from tomorrow’s Falcon 9 launch of Ax-4 to the @Space_Station to allow additional time for SpaceX teams to repair the LOx leak identified during post static fire booster inspections. Once complete – and pending Range availability – we will share a new launch date,” the company said in a post on X.

Following the announcement, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) also confirmed the delay of the Axiom-4 mission, which was scheduled for launch on June 11, 2025, and was set to carry the first Indian Gaganyatri to the ISS.

In a statement, ISRO said: “Postponement of Axiom 04 mission slated for launch on 11th June 2025 for sending first Indian Gaganyatri to ISS. As part of launch vehicle preparation to validate the performance of booster stage of Falcon 9 launch vehicle, seven second of hot test was carried out on the launch pad. It is understood that LOX leakage was detected in the propulsion bay during the test. Based on the discussion on this topic by ISRO team with the experts of Axiom and SpaceX it has been decided to correct the leak and carry out necessary validation test before clearing for the launch. Hence the launch of Axiom 04 slated for 11th June 2025 for sending first Indian Gaganyatri to ISS is postponed. With regards, V. Narayanan, Secretary DOS/ Chairman ISRO and Chairman Space Commission.”

Despite the delay, the Axiom-4 mission remains significant. The Ax-4 crew includes members from India, Poland, and Hungary, marking each nation’s first mission to the space station in history and the second government-sponsored human spaceflight mission in over 40 years, according to Axiom Space. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla will be India’s second national astronaut to go to space since 1984.

Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is part of Axiom Space’s fourth private astronaut mission (Ax-4), marking a historic moment for India’s space collaboration with NASA.

Slawosz Uznanski, European Space Agency (ESA) project astronaut, will be the second Polish astronaut since 1978.

Tibor Kapu will be the second national Hungarian astronaut since 1980.

Peggy Whitson will command her second commercial human spaceflight mission, adding to her standing record for the longest cumulative time in space by an American astronaut.

According to Axiom Space, the Ax-4 mission will “realise the return” to human spaceflight for India, Poland, and Hungary, marking each nation’s first government-sponsored flight in more than 40 years.

While this is the second human spaceflight mission in history for these countries, it will be the first time all three will execute a mission aboard the International Space Station. This historic mission highlights how Axiom Space is redefining access to low-Earth orbit and elevating national space programs globally.

Ax-4 will be the second commercial spaceflight mission made up of government and ESA-sponsored national astronauts. The Ax-4 mission stands as a beacon of opportunity for India, Poland, and Hungary, each poised to leverage this mission to advance their national space programs.

The Ax-4 research complement includes around 60 scientific studies and activities representing 31 countries, including the US, India, Poland, Hungary, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Nigeria, UAE, and nations across Europe.

This will be the most research and science-related activities conducted on an Axiom Space mission aboard the International Space Station to date, underscoring the mission’s global significance and collaborative nature to advance microgravity research in low-Earth orbit (LEO), per Axiom Space.

The mission emphasises scientific portfolios led by the US, India, Poland (in partnership with ESA), and Hungary. It aims to boost participation in these countries by involving diverse stakeholders, showcasing the value of microgravity research, and fostering international collaboration.

The studies will enhance global knowledge in human research, Earth observation, and life, biological, and material sciences, demonstrating the space research capabilities of the crew’s home nations.

Describing the team with whom he is going on the mission, Group Captain Shukla said, “The team that I’m flying with on this mission, it is fantastic. I do feel that I have exceptional crewmates. I will have these crew members for this one flight. But post this mission, these are going to be my friends for life. It has been an amazing journey. These are moments that really tell you that you are getting to be a part of something that is much larger than yourself. I can only say how extremely fortunate I am to be a part of this. It is my sincere endeavor through my mission to inspire an entire generation back home in the country. I want to use this opportunity to ignite curiosity among kids. Even if this story, my story, is able to change one life, it would be a huge success for me. I’m Group Captain Subhanshu Shukla. and I am the mission pilot for Axiom 4 mission.” (ANI)

Pak Citizen Extradited to US For ISIS-Linked Terror Plot

Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a Pakistani citizen residing in Canada, has been extradited to the United States on charges of attempting to provide material support to ISIS and attempting to commit acts of terrorism, FBI Director Kash Patel announced in a post on social media platform ‘X’.

“Earlier this afternoon, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a Pakistani citizen residing in Canada, was extradited to the United States on charges of attempting to provide material support to ISIS and attempting to commit acts of terrorism.

In the fall of last year, Khan allegedly planned to travel from Canada to New York and carry out a mass shooting in support of ISIS at a Jewish Center in Brooklyn. Khan allegedly planned his attack to occur on October 7, 2024 — the one-year anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attack in Israel,” Patel stated.

“Thankfully, the great work of FBI teams and our partners exposed those plans and shut them down — and Khan was arrested by Canadian authorities on September 4, 2024. He has now arrived in the U.S. and will face American justice,” he said.

Calling the case a reminder of the “constant threat of terrorism facing every corner of the world,” Patel also warned about the “disturbing rise in threats against our Jewish communities.”

He acknowledged the efforts of multiple FBI field offices, saying: “@NewYorkFBI, @FBIChicago and @FBILosAngeles did great work in this case with our partners and we thank them.”

The investigation highlights ongoing global efforts to counter terrorism. (ANI)

‘Kuberaa’ is set to release in theatres on June 20. The film, a socio-drama, was shot in both Tamil and Telugu. (ANI)
