Flood, Landslides Kill 2 More in Assam, Toll 23 Now

Floods and landslides in Assam claimed two more lives on Saturday, raising the total death toll to 23 this year, officials said.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), this year, floods have claimed 17 lives, and six people have been killed in landslides in the state so far.

On Saturday, one person died in a landslide in Guwahati, while another drowned in floodwaters in the Chandrapur area of Kamrup (Metro) district.

The ASDMA flood report said that the flood situation in Assam is gradually improving, and the water level of the Brahmaputra River, Barak River and its tributaries in many places is decreasing.

Over 3.37 lakh people in 12 districts–Hailakandi, Nagaon, Kamrup, Morigaon, Cachar, Sribhumi, Goalpara, Darrang, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Kamrup (M), and Golaghat–are still affected by the first wave of deluge.

12,659.99 hectares of crop area and 999 villages are still under water. The ASDMA flood report stated that, 193244 people are affected alone in Sribhumi district followed by 73724 people in Hailakandi district, 56398 people in Cachar district.

1.47 lakh people are taking shelter in 201 relief camps and distribution centres set by the administration in flood hit districts. 19,1192 animals have also affected in the current wave of flood.

Earlier in the day, following a landslide triggered by continuous rainfall in Assam’s capital, Guwahati, NDRF teams launched a time-sensitive rescue operation in the Rupnagar locality as two houses were reduced to rubble.

Officials said they have pinpointed the location of one person trapped under the debris and are working to extract the victim within the next few hours.

Speaking to ANI, NDRF officer Pankaj K, speaking from the site of the operation, said, “The teams are deployed and working professionally. Dog squads have also been deployed. We know the exact location of the person stuck in the debris.”

He added that the rescue personnel are carefully working to remove heavy boulders obstructing access to the victim.

“There are big boulders; once they are removed, we can retrieve the victim. After the progress, 4-5 feet of debris is yet to be removed to reach the victim. We are trying to finish the operation in 1.5 hours or so.” (ANI)

Amit Shah Lauds Anti-Naxal Operations, To Meet Jawans Soon

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, on Saturday met and congratulated the officers responsible for the anti-Naxal operations in Chhattisgarh, which led to the killing of top Naxal leaders. Shah also said that he would be visiting Chhattisgarh soon to meet the soldiers who played a key role in the successful operations.

“Recently met the officers who played an important role in the operations conducted against Naxalism and congratulated them on the historic success of these operations. I am also eager to meet the soldiers who made these operations successful with their bravery and will soon visit Chhattisgarh and meet them,” Shah said in a post on X.

He further reiterated the resolve of the PM Modi-led government to free India from the “scourge of Naxalism.”

On June 6, Chief Minister Sai arrived in Delhi to brief Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the successful operations aimed at ending Naxalism, the way forward, and also to discuss the state’s development. During his visit, CM Sai also met with Home Minister Shah and the officers responsible for the operations.

In just over a month, two anti-Naxal operations have neutralised two top commanders of the banned CPI (Maoist).

On June 5, officials confirmed that the body of Sudhakar (alias Gautam), a top Naxal leader, was found.

On May 21, just over three weeks earlier, the body of Basava Raju was recovered. Raju was a Central Committee Politburo member and the General Secretary of the CPI (Maoist), widely known as the “backbone of the Naxal movement.”

According to officials, Gautam was a senior Maoist leader responsible for various violent incidents that resulted in the deaths of numerous innocent tribal civilians and of security personnel.

His death marks a major success for the security forces and is a significant blow to the Maoist leadership, particularly in the Dandakaranya region. His neutralisation is expected to cause a considerable setback to the already weakening strength of the banned and outlawed Maoist organisation.

Earlier, CM Sai saluted the jawans for their bravery in carrying out such operations.

“Operations are going on continuously, and we are achieving success. Yesterday, as well, we had a success. One Central Committee Member (CCM) was neutralised by our jawans yesterday. We salute their bravery,” he told reporters.

So far in 2025, 186 Maoist cadres have been killed in counter-insurgency operations across the Bastar Range. Between 2024 and 2025, more than 403 Maoist cadres have been neutralised and their bodies recovered in the Bastar Range, following multiple encounters between Maoists and security forces, according to officials. Passengers Hail Srinagar-Katra Train Experience As ‘Unmatched’

The inaugural ride of the Vande Bharat Express between Srinagar and Katra has drawn praise from passengers, many of whom described the new service as offering “unmatched convenience,” making travel “much easier”, “possible and comfortable,” while hailing it as a “great move by the government” to connect Kashmir with the rest of India.

Tourists and locals alike hailed the launch as a historic moment, saying it would not only cut down travel time but also boost tourism and make Kashmir more accessible.

Speaking to ANI, Ashok Kumar Khajanchi, a tourist from Bikaner in Rajasthan, shared his experience, “We came from Bikaner to Mumbai and then to Srinagar. We’ve visited places like Belgaum, Gulmarg, and Sonamarg. Many had tried to scare us into cancelling our trip, but we were determined. When we heard Vande Bharat was running, we cancelled our taxi to Jammu Tawi, even though we lost Rs 6,000. We booked Vande Bharat tickets at 7 PM and reached Srinagar by 8 PM. Due to my health problems, the train made travel much easier.”

Khajanchi, who is recovering from a foot fracture, added, “The convenience offered by Vande Bharat is unmatched. I had two fractures, so we had to cancel our earlier car and train bookings. But this train made the journey possible and comfortable.”

His wife, Manju Khajanchi, also expressed satisfaction with their Kashmir trip. “We’ve spent five days in Srinagar. The weather is lovely, and people are welcoming. Whatever you hear in the news is far from reality. It’s peaceful and beautiful–just like a paradise,” she said, standing at Srinagar railway station before boarding the train back to Katra.

Another traveller highlighted the new service’s time-saving aspect: “Earlier, travelling to Jammu meant taking a flight or a long taxi ride. Now, the Vande Bharat train will make the same journey in nearly the same time as a flight. It’s a great move by the government to connect Kashmir with the rest of India.”

He added, “This will benefit not just tourists but also officials and local commuters. Once extended to Jammu in two months, the journey will become even smoother. People from the South who earlier avoided long flights or multiple modes of transport can now come by train.”

With the commencement of this route, many believe Kashmir will witness a sharp rise in tourism, as Vande Bharat promises a fast, reliable, and scenic journey through the valley.

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Katra Railway Station, officially connecting the Jammu division with Kashmir via rail. This marks a major milestone in strengthening railway infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.

During his visit, PM Modi also inaugurated the world’s highest railway arch bridge over the Chenab River. Speaking on the occasion, he said the development projects will further boost Jammu and Kashmir’s growth journey.

‘Col Sofiya & Wg Cdr Vyomika Are New Role Models For Indian Girls’

Aanya Rao, a 12th pass-out from Noida, says the lady officers who briefed the world about Operation Sindoor have inspired Indian girls to don uniform. Her views:

The day I saw the images of Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh flashing across every Indian news channel, something inside me changed. I had always admired the uniform, the discipline, and the courage it represented — but until that moment, the dream of joining the Indian Armed Forces felt distant. That morning, however, my dream found a face, and a future.

As a 17-year-old girl from Noida, I’ve grown up in a fast-paced city full of ambition, but when it came to career choices for girls, most people still leaned towards medicine, engineering, or business. The Army? That was usually “too tough” or “meant only for boys.” But when I saw Col Sofiya leading a multinational medical team and Wg Cdr Vyomika commanding the skies, something clicked inside me. These weren’t just stories of success — they were milestones for every Indian girl with a fire in her heart and service in her soul.

Watching them stand tall in their uniforms, with confidence in their eyes and pride in their voice, I felt a connection. They looked like us — educated, ambitious, Indian women who chose courage over comfort. They didn’t just make headlines; they made history. They proved that women are not only part of the Armed Forces — they can lead, inspire, and protect with unmatched strength.

That morning, I remember sitting at the breakfast table, staring at the TV, my books still open in front of me. My parents noticed my silence. I looked at them and said, “I want to be like her.” At first, they were surprised — not because I had dreams, but because for the first time, they saw me believe in them so strongly. Col Sofiya and Wg Cdr Vyomika weren’t just in the news — they were in my heart, lighting the path I now wanted to walk.

Since then, I’ve started preparing seriously — jogging every morning in the park near my Sector-62 home, watching videos on SSB interviews, and reading about the life of officers. The NDA route is tough, and being a girl from a civilian background makes it more challenging, but I’m not afraid. If they could do it, so can I — and so can thousands of girls like me from cities like Noida and beyond.

These two women didn’t ask for special treatment. They earned their place with hard work and determination. That’s what makes them my heroes. They wore the uniform not for show, but with purpose. And that’s exactly how I want to wear mine — with pride, duty, and honour.

Yes, I’m just a 12th pass-out girl from Noida. But I’m also someone who saw two fearless women lead from the front — and from that moment on, I knew I wasn’t just chasing a dream anymore. That’s the magic of inspiration — it turns a quiet dream into a plan, and a plan into purpose.

Seemanth Kumar Singh has been named as the new Bengaluru Police Commissioner, hours after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah suspended top cop B Dayananda and other top officials in the wake of the stampede that killed 11 people.

Following the Bengaluru stampede that claimed 11 lives and left many injured, the Karnataka Government on Thursday suspended top police officials at the Cubbon Park Police Station and formed a one-man commission under a retired High Court Judge to probe the incident.

On the BJP asking for his resignation, Shivakumar said that they (BJP) are trying to do politics on dead bodies.

“Let them (BJP) demand (my resignation). They (BJP) are trying to do politics on the dead bodies. We don’t want to do politics,” the Karnataka DyCM said.
