ED Summons Rana Daggubati, Vijay Deverakonda Over Alleged Betting App Promotions

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned actors Rana Daggubati, Vijay Deverakonda and Prakash Raj for allegedly promoting illegal betting apps, sources said.

As per the sources, Rana Daggubati has been asked to appear for questioning on July 23, Prakash Raj on July 30 and Vijay Deverakonda on August 6.

Earlier in March, Telangana police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against 25 celebrities and influencers, including Rana Daggubati, Prakash Raj, Vijay Deverakonda, and Manchu Lakshmi, for allegedly promoting illegal betting and gambling apps through their social media platforms.

The FIR was filed at the Miyapur Police Station in Hyderabad following a petition by 32-year-old businessman PM Phanindra Sarma.

The complaint, lodged on March 19 this year, alleged a disturbing trend of celebrities and influencers promoting illegal gambling apps that violate the Public Gambling Act of 1867.

The complaint emphasized that these apps and platforms are causing widespread financial harm, particularly among lower and middle-class families who are being lured into the false promise of easy money. The apps often rely on celebrities to build credibility, leading vulnerable individuals to invest substantial amounts of money, only to face financial ruin.

After this news broke out in March, Deverakonda issued a clarification via a press statement.

Deverakonda’s team said in the statement that the actor entered into a contract with the company as a brand ambassador for skill-based games and endorsed the company in regions and territories where online skill-based games were legally permitted.

“This is to inform the public and all concerned parties that Vijay Deverakonda has officially entered into a contract with a company solely for the limited purpose of serving as a brand ambassador for skill-based games. His endorsement was strictly confined to regions and territories where online skill-based games are legally permitted,” the statement said. (ANI)

RajGuru of Bollywood Musicals

‘Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega woh gaana gayega,’ Raj Kapoor sang, linking love with music, in Sangam (1964). That year, his contemporary, Guru Dutt, died, like many characters he portrayed, a tortured soul, at just 39. Yet, the last film he produced, Baharein Phir Bhi Ayengi, released three years after his death, heralded many a hopeful spring.

Both, Raj and Guru, were born within a span of a few months. Observing their birth centenaries, it needs noting that nothing, and nobody, has recreated the musical aura that two of Hindi cinema’s most eminent filmmakers created. Their deep understanding of music and its place in cinema has ensured that their films remain watchable and their songs hummable. So, this is more about their music.

Their musical prowess was part of the cinematic cavalcade of giants who contributed to what is fondly called the “golden age”. That newly independent India under Jawaharlal Nehru, despite its many failures, was aspiring and inclusive. Cinema, not just in Hindi/Urdu, reached out to the world with its contemporary stories, even as it told the mythological and social ones.

Today, even if you find the proceedings slow, you wait for the next song, and the next. Recall the little song books costing a single anna (then currency), too shabby for a bookstall and sold only at a paan-cigarette shop? They carried up to a dozen ditties in a single movie.

That music overawed the theme. Its notes carried even a poorly written or enacted film. Every word and note carried meaning. Age-old Hindustani Classical or the Carnatic, went with the Western Rock ’n Roll and a vast array of folk songs from across the country, even mixed with the flavour from other lands.

Often derided as ‘plagiarised’ by the discerning, that musical fusion was unique to India, yet copied by others. They were edited out to reduce the length of the entries sent to international film festivals. But their demand at home never ebbed.

The fare had dollops of ‘dil’ and ‘pyar’, easily the most used words. Although no longer lip-synced by actors, they remain so even as contemporary India grapples with new challenges and sensibilities.

Raj and Guru, both romantics in real and reel lives, embellished their respective products differently. When not chasing or pining for his lady love, Raj sang of hope and nation-building, even mocking the Almighty. Guru’s urban angst against an exploitative and hypocritical society was stark, yet poetic. He criticised the many things that Raj’s songs tended to sugar-coat with socialist ideals, always hoping for a bright future. Vibrantly composed, Raj’s songs playfully helped depart from the terse, sarcasm-laden, in-your-face dialogues written by Khwaja Ahmed Abbas.

Unlike Abbas and their other teammates, neither Raj nor Guru was an activist of the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) or the Progressive Writers’ Association (PWA). These two leftist cultural bodies heavily influenced the art, literature and cinema of that “golden age”. Born of political street protests, they influenced storytelling through music.

The poor-versus-the-privileged theme was common. Raj’s “pop-socialism” helped lend a modern touch (“Mutthi mein hai taqdeer hamari, humne kismat ko bas mein kiya hai” (Boot Polish-1954). It helped erase the stereotype about India being the country of sadhus and snake-charmers.

Raj developed a global audience that hummed and danced to “Awaara hoon”. Nostalgia lingers in some societies even today. Compared to that instant bubbly, Guru’s music, like his films, depressed the viewers even while it entertained. It took time, like matured wine, for some of his films to be considered classics. If Raj was popular and very public, Guru’s songs sent the sensitive hearts brooding, privately, perhaps, more intensely.

Of the rich-poor theme, Raj’s song-and-dance with slum-dwellers participating lampooned the rich (Shree 420). Visualise him playing the dafli, spinning it over his head like Lord Krishna’s Sudarshan Chakra, and before the crescendo, bringing it down to remind us of life’s challenges.

By contrast, Guru gate-crashed the party of the rich or a college mushaira (Pyaasa-1957), asking, in Sahir Ludhianvi’s terse words, “Yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaye toh kya hai?”, and before being thrown out,  “Tumhari hai tum hi sambhalo yeh duniya”. Never again has protest fused with poetry so beautifully.

Guru’s rich music was a product of the poor, for the poor. There was a song for champiwala (Johnny Walker), and a street hooker (Waheeda Rahman). Kaifi Azmi lived in a commune to pursue politics and poetry. Sahir commanded more prestige than money.

Raj called Shailendra, a welder-turned-polyglot poet, “Kavi Raaj”, who said the most profound things in the simplest words possible. His struggling singer addressed as Mukesh Chand, was “meri rooh” — his soul.

Guru’s poetic protests, penned by Sahir, were set to music by S D Burman, a prince who had quit his royal riches. Together, they heralded without any musical support (Yeh mehlon yeh takhtonPyaasa), by Mohammed Rafi.

The best example, perhaps, was Kaagaz ke Phool (1959), Guru’s autobiographical opus. The chemistry between him, his singer-wife Geeta Dutt, S D Burman and Kaifi created immortal songs. Kaifi would lament that he rewrote some songs because Guru could not communicate what he wanted. That churning produced some of the best poetry sung in Indian cinema. For the first time, perhaps, it accorded the behind-the-scenes lyricist his rightful place in a glamour-sodden industry.

The overall impact of Kaagaz Ke Phool was overwhelming but depressing. Songs created an aching melancholia. The audience came to be entertained, left the cinema hall depressed, the women in tears. Technologically well ahead of its time, the film flopped, but became a classic of world cinema only later.

Guru’s classics blurred the lines between personal life and cinema. Though by no means comparable, Raj made the same mistake as Guru a decade later, by making Mera Naam Joker (1970). It bombed despite lovely performances and great music. He recovered only with Bobby (1973), but with music by Laxmikant Pyarelal. His two-decades-plus collaboration with Shankar Jaikishan had ended.

While Raj remained contemporary, Guru explored the decadent Bengal in author-backed Sahib, Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962), helped by Hemant Kumar’s immortal music. Songs of Ravi in Chaudhvin Ka Chand remain best savoured, say, in solitude and an unlit room.

Before he made ‘serious’ films, Guru was a pioneer of the Bombay Noir. Dark and gritty romantic thrillers; they explored crime and corruption in Bombay. Their hallmark was hummable songs, many composed by O P Nayyar. Since it is not possible to continue here about the musical contribution of Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt, one must end with either Guru’s lament “Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam”, or Raj-like philosophy of life: “Jeena isi ka naam hai.”

‘Framed In False Case,’ Says 2006 Mumbai Blasts Accused After Acquittal

The Bombay High Court on Monday acquitted 12 people of involvement in the 2006 Mumbai train blast case. One of the acquittees, Mohammed Sajid Ansari, said that he was being framed by Mumbai Police from the beginning and that he was “innocent”.

Ansari pointed out that the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) created a false narrative about the matter, and all the confessions were extracted by torturing them. He stated that 19 years of his life have been lost, due to which his family has suffered.

“I have been saying this from the beginning that I am innocent. Police have framed a false case against us. All 13 people who were arrested are innocent. ATS has circulated a false narrative. All our confessions were taken after torturing us. Today, the Bombay High Court has finally pronounced that we are innocent. 19 years of my life have been lost. My daughter and wife have gone through a lot,” Ansari told ANI.

Meanwhile, one of the brothers of the acquittees, Sarifur Rehman, said that his brother Zamir Ahmed has been acquitted after 19 years, and during this period, his family has faced a lot of hardships.

Rehman said that his brother is currently in Amravati jail, and following the High Court’s decision, there is happiness in his family.

“My brother Zamir Ahmad has been acquitted after 19 years. For the past 19 years, we have faced hardships in court. But today, by the grace of God, we received relief from the high court as my brother was honourably acquitted. We have been saying for 19 years that he is innocent and was falsely implicated. He is currently in Amravati Jail, and everyone at my house is very happy that my brother will be returning soon,” Rehman said.

On Monday, the Bombay High Court acquitted all 12 accused who had been convicted by the trial court for their alleged roles in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts.

This important verdict came after 19 years. A special bench of the Bombay High Court ruled that the evidence relied on by the prosecution was not conclusive to convict the accused persons. The court then ordered the immediate release of all the accused.

On the evening of July 11, 2006, bomb blasts took place at seven different places in the Mumbai local trains within just 11 minutes. In this incident, 189 people died, while more than 827 passengers were injured.

The bombs were placed in first-class compartments of trains from Churchgate. They exploded near the stations of Matunga Road, Mahim Junction, Bandra, Khar, Jogeshwari, Bhayandar and Borivali. A trial court in 2015 convicted 12 people in the blasts’ case. (ANI)

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai hits back congress

K’taka: Basavaraj Bommai Calls For Appropriate Action In Mass Burial Case

Former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP MP Basavaraja Bommai on Monday called on police to take appropriate action into the alleged mass burial of human bodies in Dharmasthala.

The Karnataka government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter.

Speaking to the media here on Monday, he said that the “locals and police personnel who have served in Dharmasthala for many years are well aware of the area. The complainant has claimed that they are under pressure. It must be investigated who exerted such pressure on the complainant. The police must take appropriate action regarding the incident that occurred.”

Dharmasthala is an ancient temple known for its spiritual significance and public trust, he observed. “No actions should be taken that erode the public’s faith in this temple.”

Spokesperson of Dharmasthala, K Parshwanath Jain, on Sunday welcomed the decision of the Karnataka government to constitute an SIT probe.

Jain stated that a case was recently registered at the Dharmasthala police station, which claimed that “several dead bodies were buried” in the region, which “sparked widespread debate, speculations, and confusion at the national level in recent days.”

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Sunday said that the Special Investigation Team will probe the Dharmasthala mass burial case as there is “public hue and cry” over the matter.

The development follows a letter from the Karnataka State Women’s Commission (KSWC).

“The government has constituted an SIT to look into the Dharmasthala issues. There has been a complaint. There has been a public hue and cry. The government has taken note of all this and then constituted an SIT to look into this entire thing. If somebody is thinking of creating some political issue out of this at this point in time, I don’t want to react to all that,” Parameshwara had earlier told reporters.

On July 16, a group of concerned public-interest lawyers met CM Siddaramaiah at the Chief Minister’s Residence “Krishna” to urgently request the constitution of an SIT to probe the alleged incidents of mass murder, mass rape, and mass burial at Dharmasthala. (ANI)

Udaipur Files: Centre Orders Six Changes, SC Extends Stay On Release Till July 24

The Central government’s committee, which was constituted as per the directions issued by the Delhi High Court on July 10, has recommended six modifications/changes to be incorporated in the film ‘Udaipur Files’ before its release for public or commercial viewing.

‘Udaipur Files’ is based on the 2022 murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Rajasthan. The film was scheduled to be released on July 11. On July 10, the Delhi High Court stayed the release till the Centre decides on pleas seeking a permanent ban over the film’s potential to “promote disharmony” in society.

The Centre has now recommended certain alterations to the film’s disclaimer and has asked the filmmakers to replace the original one with the revised one. The committee also advised removing credit frames that express gratitude to certain individuals.

A particular AI-generated scene resembling a Saudi Arabia-style execution is to be revised, as per the committee’s recommendation. Additionally, it has recommended that all instances in the film with respect to a character named “Nutan Sharma” are to be removed and replaced with a new name. Specific dialogues attributed to Nutan Sharma, including one with reference to religious texts, are to be deleted.

“Delete Nutan Sharma’s dialogue: ‘Maine toh wohi kaha hai jo unke dharma grantho mein likha hai’, the order released by the Central Ministry of Information and Broadcasting stated. Lastly, the Committee has recommended the removal of certain dialogues regarding the Baloch community.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi has continued the stay on the release of the film and scheduled the next hearing for July 24. (ANI)

Taking to Instagram on Monday, Karan penned a long note for the debutants, only to be tagged as the “nanny of nepo kids.”

In his post, Karan mentioned that he felt “immense joy” after watching ‘Saiyaara,’ further adding that the love story has conquered the silver screen and made the nation fall in love.

Hailing the director, he wrote, “Mohit Suri makes the best film of his career and am blown away by his storytelling , his craft and his magnificent use of music… the music is not just a pillar but a character in this film.”

The comment caught Karan’s attention and he gave a befitting response.

As the user commented, “A gaya nepo kid ka daijaan,” Karan Johar slammed him by replying, “Chup kar!!! Ghar baithe baithee negativity mat paal! Do bachon ka kaam dekh!! Aur khud kuch kaam kar!!!! (Shut up!!! Don’t spread negativity while sitting at home!! Watch the work by the two kids!! And do some work yourself!!!!)”

‘Saiyaara’ has recorded a massive opening at the Indian box office, crossing Rs 8 crore in the first weekend. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh, has described it as an “unimaginable and historic achievement” for the film. (ANI)
